  • Anemia Hair Loss and Iron Deficiency Hair Loss. How does it happen? What can you do to fix it?
Iron deficiency and hair loss or anemia and hair loss. This is one of those items that I feel as though in the hair loss world, people just straight up overlook the vast majority of the time. There are so many cases that I've run into that somebody has tried everything. They've tried minoxidil, they've tried Propecia, they've tried PRP or vitamins or whatnot and nothing worked and essentially they end up in my office and I do our very standard blood test, ferritin, vitamin D3, blood type and it comes back that their ferritin is low and their ferritin is their iron storage protein. If that's low and what I mean by low is essentially less than optimal, that can be a massive influence in the loss of hair and essentially prevent you from growing hair back. When you're looking at everything, people think of just iron, but they have to think of ferritin because ferritin is your iron storage protein.
To get a little bit more involved in this, iron is a vital substance for our body. Without it we cannot live. It is 70% of what actually makes up hemoglobin, which is our red blood cells. It transports oxygen throughout the entire body and collectively we have to have a pretty substantial amount of iron in our diet to keep our bodies working properly. When we are looking at this scenario for hair loss, we have two major blood tests that we look for to understand how iron or ferritin is influencing your hair.
When you're going to get a blood test, oftentimes your standard blood test is simply not going to give you the information you need to know if ferritin or iron is influencing your hair. You must get a serum iron blood test and a ferritin blood test to know exactly where you're at. You might have some additional symptoms that would allow you to key into that. If your iron is very low, you're also going to have symptoms like bruising easily, fatigue, lightheadedness, you're also going to run into potentially heart palpitations, but if your ferritin is low, you might not have any of those or any of those physical symptoms, you might just have hair loss. Again, that's why you need to get both of those blood tests.
Each individual is going to have a little bit of a different daily requirement of iron-based on their lifestyle factors, but some key demographics that are going to have more demands for iron would be a menstruating female. As soon as a woman obviously begins to menstruate, losing a very large amount of blood on a monthly basis becomes a key factor, an overwhelming need for iron because when you lose that blood, you're actually going to end up pulling from your ferritin stores to rebuild all of those red blood cells that you just lost. If that's happening over and over and over again, it can easily diminish ferritin. Most of the females that I see in their teens, they're actually losing hair due to ferritin or iron issues.
Iron and hair Loss and Ferritin and Hair Loss. Today, we are going to be discussing iron deficiency and hair loss-- or anemia and hair loss-- specifically, the effects and what you can do about the problem. Many people have tried everything under the sun to correct this problem from certain over-the-counter drugs to daily vitamins and yet, nothing worked. Essentially, they ended up in my office taking Vitamin D 3 tests which have led to the answer they were looking for. Watch this video to learn what the cause of iron deficiency and hair loss may be for you and how to overcome it!

I've tested numerous things. The only things that really worked in my case: A nutritious diet, decent sleeping timings, moving your body atleast for 25 mins, eating right, using good shampoo and oil. I use only liiitlleextra coconinon hydrating shampoo and hair oil for this reason plus it does the work. The hairfall got under control with it.

I started using lityleextra reactivate hair growth serum which has rosemary because my hair was swiftly falling out due to stress and other factors. I was actually only looking for anything to try, and this turned out to be suggested, therefore I decided for it. Within a few days, I myself noticed significantly less hair loss when I brush my hair. I also noticed the area where I started getting patches of loss, there had been new growth. It actually irritate my skin a bit right on the forehead hairline, thus I use a band to avoid it from running down as also keeping the head tilted back during application. The irritation vanished and did not returned, so if your skin is sensitive or simply to be careful, I advice a hairband to prevent it from running down to your skin. In general, I'm so pleased with this serum and will keep on to use.

For someone that has dealt with hair loss, finding this serum came as a pleasant discovery. I tried everything-oils, shampoos, you name it, but nothing appeared to be effective. It only when a friend recommended Reactivate hair serum I decided to try it a try. Initially, I was skeptical and almost quit after inconsistent use. However, after seeing new hair growth, I ensured to using it regularly for the past 50 days. Initially, my hair loss ceased, and now my bald spots are starting to fill in. Other people have even noticed baby hairs growing on my head. It's been a journey of patience along with consistency, and yet the results are beginning to appear.

One of the most underdiagnosed reasons for hair loss no question. A most recent blood test showed I had a low Ferritin and Iron level but was within their 'reference range'. At first glance, it looks on the low side but fine until my NP doctor saw the numbers and said you're anemic! I opted for iron weekly iron injections and my hair is no longer falling out and my energy is through the roof! No question regrowth will happen. This company also happens to have some great hair growth products check them out.

Hi. I’ve lost about 70% of my hair. It is very noticeable at the crown of my head. July 2020 my ferritin level was less than 8 and vitamin d was 33. My Dr. recommended iron ( 4 months 45mg) and vitamin d3(2000 iu) supplements. In January 2021 ferritin level and vitamin d went up to 41. My hair still sheds though not as bad but now it is very thin at the top. Should I supplement with iron and include ferritin supplements until my numbers are closer to 70? If so for how long before I recheck my levels again? Thank you.

I lost 80% of my hair due to iron deficiency. My latest ferritin is at 21, even after taking 112mg of iron for so long. I had an iron infusion (3x), and that made everything worse after. Derm diagnosed me with TE due to the iron infusion. I tracked my hair loss, and after I got the infusion, I went downhill. I never thought I would be going bald because of this. I have done so much to improve, from eating well, supplements, etc. Doctors have been no help.
If you haven't already incorporate heme iron supplements or red meat. I'm surprised you were not prescribed iron supplements. 45mg is low, especially with your ferritin levels.

So glad I found this video! I am suffering from TE, 4.5 months in 😞 and it took me a couple of months to even figure out it was TE then another couple of months to find out my ferritin is at an 8! I started iron supplements from my doctor 2 weeks ago, hoping I see my shedding completely stop soon. My thick hair is now so thin, not bald but thin enough my scalp can me seen lightly when I wear my hair up (my temples got hit hard). My density is just awful and I have oily hair because of this. I subscribed! Thank you for this video!
Update: 8/5/23 - Unfortunately my hair is still shedding like wildfire 😔 I do now believe and at this point honestly, I *know* the Pfizer vaccine caused my TE. It started in June 2021, quite literally right after my first shot. Not even 2 weeks after because when I got my second dose my hair began to fall out *more* 😒.

It’s kind of demoralising how I, as a 16 year old male, consulted a dermatologists who intuitively just diagnosed androgenetic alopecia, and prescribed minoxidil. After conducting a blood test I realised my ferritin was at 20…

      @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

From William’s Assistant Trichologist MJ: Hi Philipp! If you have family history of hair loss, nutritional deficiencies can quickly expedite the miniaturization process. It's very possible to have both nutritional and hormonal hair loss at the same time but minoxidil isn't the right product for either type of hair loss unfortunately. You definitely need to work on increasing your ferritin level as the number 1 goal.

@@WilliamGaunitzTrichologist What would you recommend? My temples are becoming increasingly visible, but it seems to be some sort of diffuse hair loss, as Im losing hair primarily on the sides of my head, not the crown or much of the temples. Im afraid to consume finasteride due to potential impotence and sexual effects (as 16-year old I still want to have children). The only things Im doing right now is topical minoxidil 5 percent, taking supplements with biotin, B12, zinc, horsetail extract etc (viviscal and neofollics), microneedling at the temples and massages. I received an iron infusion of 200 mg 1 week ago and am taking iron supplement (29 mg) with vitamin C (Blood builder).

I had problems for years feeling exhausted and having episodes of feeling dizzy and winded. I was always put on antidepressants and given anxiety medication and told there was nothing wrong with me. I noticed that I was having trouble completing my normal run during my period. I had thought maybe it was an iron issue because of that, but my doctor always said my blood work was fine.
Then I started having horrible heart palpitations, that would last for days or even a week at a time. At the time I was also eating ice non stop. I would go to the gas station near my house and get a large cup of ice two to three times a day. I went to the ER with the heart palpitations and was sent to a cardiologist. I was told it was just pvc’s and totally normal and again, there is nothing wrong with me.
Then I started waking up at night with restless leg and feeling winded. I was sent to have a sleep study done and again told there was nothing wrong with me. Basically, was told I’m crazy.
It wasn’t until I went to an urgent care office asking for anxiety medication that I found a doctor that actually tested my iron levels. My ferritin was at 5 and iron binding was at 500 and something. I’m forever grateful for that doctor. I had suffered for probably close to ten years with these symptoms that would come and go.
Recently, I also was diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis after I had an MRI done for back pain and a grapefruit sized mass was found on my left ovary. That was another years long battle with numerous doctors. If there had been a doctor that listened to me I may have gotten the help I needed and not suffered for so long with all the symptoms. I was told my heavy painful periods were normal by every doctor.

I've bought the dht blocking supplement and one month in I've noticed less hair fall for sure. I'm looking to by the serum topical solution too. I once briefly used an acid reflux medication and a big chuck of my hair on my front left side literally wiped away one morning and has stayed thin ever since. I stopped straight after. I also weight train pretty hard 2-3 times a week. My job involves about 7-1/2hrs of lifting moderate to heavy objects. I've instinctively though iron keels might be the reason I've thinned over the years, that and DHT. I feel there is hope now, I'm a very healthy person overall. I meditate, relax, breathe and pray. I throw in some affirmations for good measure too.

You wanna look at your hemoglobin in this reference and your MCV on a CBC. That could be related to anemia of inflammation, and may have more health repercussions. A hematologist could help you in that regard. There's also something called hemachromatosis that may require you to give blood to get the ferritin down. the serum number should come up so that your hair can function normally

Hi doctor , I used minoxidil 5% but unfortunately my hair texture changed from silky to wavy and very dry is there any solution for this ?

    • @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist
      @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Minoxidil is an effective treatment for hair loss, but it can sometimes cause changes in hair texture, such as dryness and waviness. Here are some steps you can take to address these issues:
      1. Hydration and Moisturizing
Deep Conditioning: Use deep conditioning treatments or hair masks once or twice a week to restore moisture to your hair.
Leave-In Conditioner: Apply a leave-in conditioner daily to help keep your hair hydrated and manageable.
Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner: Choose products specifically designed for dry or damaged hair to improve moisture levels.
      2. Gentle Hair Care
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Minimize the use of hair products that contain sulfates, alcohol, and other drying agents.
Limit Heat Styling: Reduce the use of heat styling tools like blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons, which can further dry out your hair.
Gentle Handling: Be gentle when brushing and styling your hair to avoid breakage and further damage.
      3. Oils and Serums
Natural Oils: Apply natural oils such as argan oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil to your hair. These oils can help lock in moisture and improve texture.
Silicone-Based Serums: Consider using silicone-based serums that can provide a protective barrier and add shine, making your hair appear smoother and less frizzy.
      4. Adjusting Minoxidil Application
Avoid Overuse: Ensure you are using the recommended amount of Minoxidil. Overuse can exacerbate dryness.
Scalp Focus: Focus on applying Minoxidil to the scalp rather than the hair to minimize contact with your hair strands.
      5. Alternative Formulations
Foam vs. Liquid: If you are using a liquid formulation, consider switching to the foam version of Minoxidil, which may be less likely to cause dryness and textural changes.
Lower Concentration: Consult with your dermatologist about possibly using a lower concentration of Minoxidil to see if it alleviates the textural changes without compromising effectiveness.
      6. Consult a Dermatologist or Trichologist
Professional Advice: If the changes in hair texture are severe or persistent, seek advice from a healthcare professional. They can provide tailored recommendations and check for any other underlying issues contributing to the dryness and texture changes.
While Minoxidil can sometimes cause changes in hair texture, adopting a moisturizing and gentle hair care routine, using natural oils, and considering alternative formulations of Minoxidil can help mitigate these effects. If the problem persists, consulting with a professional is the best course of action.

I'm at a 25. My doctor says it's within a normal range. Meanwhile my hair is still falling out and my low vitamin D count isn't a big deal according to him either. I don't think I can convince him to help me.

    • @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist

It's frustrating when you're experiencing hair loss and your concerns don't seem to be addressed adequately. Even if your vitamin D level is within the normal range, other factors might be contributing to your hair loss. Here are some steps you can take:
      1. Seek a Second Opinion:
Dermatologist/Trichologist: Consult a specialist who focuses on hair and scalp health.
Endocrinologist: Consider seeing a hormone specialist to rule out any underlying hormonal issues.
      2. Comprehensive Blood Work:
Request a detailed blood test to check for other potential deficiencies or imbalances, such as:
      Iron levels (ferritin)
      Thyroid function (TSH, T3, T4)
      Zinc and B12 levels
      3. Diet and Lifestyle:
Balanced Diet: Ensure you're getting enough nutrients from a varied diet. Include foods rich in iron, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Stress Management: Stress can exacerbate hair loss. Practice relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises.
      4. Hair Care Practices:
Gentle Products: Use mild shampoos and avoid harsh chemicals or excessive heat styling.
Scalp Massage: Regular scalp massages can stimulate blood flow and promote hair growth.
      5. Supplements:
FoliGrowth Tablets: Our FoliGrowth Ultra Hair Vitamin contains a blend of vitamins, minerals, and herbs designed to support hair health and growth.
Vitamin D: Despite your levels being normal, you might benefit from a higher intake of vitamin D, especially if you have limited sun exposure. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting new supplements.
      6. Track Your Progress:
Keep a journal of your hair care routine, diet, and any supplements you take. Note any changes in your hair condition over time.
Addressing hair loss often requires a multifaceted approach. By exploring these suggestions and possibly seeking another professional opinion, you might find a more effective solution to your hair loss concerns.

I have low ferritin and iron, and now am i taking doctor prescribed supplements to address this. My question is whether there is also a benefit to using minoxidil to speed up thr hair regrowth? And if so, will it be safe to stop taking it once my hair has regrown and my iron and ferritin levels are good?

    • @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist
      @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist  หลายเดือนก่อน

Addressing low ferritin and iron levels is crucial for hair regrowth, as iron is essential for healthy hair follicle function and growth. Taking prescribed supplements will help replenish your iron stores, which can lead to improved hair growth over time.
Using Minoxidil: Minoxidil can indeed speed up hair regrowth by increasing blood flow to the scalp and stimulating hair follicles. It can be particularly helpful if you're looking for quicker results while your iron and ferritin levels are being corrected. However, it's important to note that Minoxidil works as long as you continue using it. Once you stop, any hair that grew due to its application may gradually shed, especially if the underlying cause (like iron deficiency) hasn’t been fully resolved or if other factors contribute to hair loss.
Stopping Minoxidil: Once your iron and ferritin levels are stabilized and you see satisfactory hair regrowth, you may consider tapering off Minoxidil. However, this should be done gradually to monitor how your hair responds. It’s possible that if your iron levels are optimal and there are no other hair loss triggers, your hair may maintain its regrowth without Minoxidil. But keep in mind, stopping Minoxidil suddenly can lead to shedding.
In summary, using Minoxidil alongside your iron supplements could be beneficial for faster regrowth, but consult with your doctor or a trichologist before making any decisions about stopping Minoxidil to ensure you maintain your hair health.

Is iron supplementation safe if only ferritin is low?
Ferritin is at 30 and have had hair loss for 10 years, but iron levels are normal.

    • @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist
      @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

When dealing with low ferritin levels, which is a marker of iron storage in the body, it's important to consider supplementation, especially if you've experienced chronic hair loss. Ferritin levels are crucial for hair health because low stores can lead to decreased hair growth and increased shedding.
Even if your serum iron levels are normal, low ferritin alone can impact hair health. Typically, ferritin levels for optimal hair growth are suggested to be at least 50-70 ng/mL, higher than the often lower "normal" range established in lab tests.
However, iron supplementation should be approached cautiously. Excess iron can lead to toxicity and other health complications, such as heart and liver problems. It's crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, particularly iron. They might recommend a specific dosage based on your needs or suggest other ways to improve iron storage, such as dietary changes or addressing potential absorption issues.
If you're considering iron supplements due to low ferritin levels and ongoing hair loss, it's wise to get a tailored recommendation from a healthcare professional to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Given your hemoglobin (Hb) level is 12.5 and serum ferritin is 17, it seems you might be dealing with iron deficiency, which can indeed contribute to hair loss. Iron is crucial for producing hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to your body's cells, including those that stimulate hair growth. Low ferritin, a protein that stores iron, indicates your body's iron reserves are low, potentially affecting your hair health.
For managing hair loss associated with low ferritin, consider dietary changes or supplements to increase iron levels, ideally under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Additionally, ensure you're getting adequate intake of other hair health-supporting nutrients like vitamin D, zinc, and biotin. Regularly monitoring your iron levels and consulting with a healthcare provider can provide personalized advice tailored to your needs.

"Doctors" I went who studied in europe, north america, south america, you name it all told me my body was attacking itself which I always found as a really stupid explanation and hard to believe. So my body now thinks my hair is a foreign agent and its attacking itself? Yea right. I was sold every expensive treatment in the book. Nothing worked. Obviously because cause was never identified and eliminated. Thank God for TH-cam and for showing me Dr. William. Turns out I was anemic this whole time (4 years!). Smh. Been on D3 and ferronil for 3 days and already noticing huge improvement. Unbelievable. I am low key glad but also super annoyed and lost so much faith on "Doctors". Thank you sir.

👏👏👏😭This is incredible information (tears) THANK YOU SO MUCH DOCTOR !!! I am 41 female with hairloss & lives in the UK 🇬🇧 and my GP (ignored my low levels) has never looked into low Ferritin or low Vitamin D of which I am Chronically low in both (I have watched your video on low Vitamin D as well ). He did the other routine blood tests for hair loss which didn’t show anything. I am now on 210mg Ferrous Femurate & 4000IU Vitamin D, self prescribed over the counter meds. I have only started. It looks like I will have to change from ferrous femurate to the ones you recommend in video....THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR GIVING ME HOPE ❤️ PS: I have assessed & excluded all other types of hairloss

My ferritin levels were 6 and serum iron 20 and haemoglobin 9 points and after 1.5 months of taking iron supplements of 100mg per day my iron levels increased to 63 and haemoglobin 13.7 and now doctor told to stop taking iron pills anymore but my hair loss is still the same so should i stop taking iron pills now or should i continue it till the level increases to 70 or 80 as I'm scared that taking more iron will make haemoglobin levels too high now ??

    • @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist
      @WilliamGaunitzTrichologist  หลายเดือนก่อน

Your improvement in ferritin, serum iron, and hemoglobin levels is a positive sign, but I understand your concern about continuing iron supplementation, especially since your hair loss hasn’t improved yet.
      Key Points to Consider:
Ferritin and Hair Growth: Ferritin levels are crucial for hair growth, and many experts recommend that ferritin levels be at least 70-80 ng/mL to support healthy hair growth. Even though your other iron-related levels have improved, if your ferritin is still low, it might explain why your hair loss hasn't improved.
Iron Supplementation: While your hemoglobin has reached a healthy level, you can continue taking a lower dose of iron or consider iron-rich foods to gradually raise your ferritin without excessively increasing hemoglobin. It's important to balance this and avoid iron overload, which can have its own risks.
Consult Your Doctor: Before making any changes to your supplementation, it’s essential to consult with your doctor. They can guide you on whether you should continue with a lower dose of iron or switch to monitoring your levels more closely with regular blood tests.
Other Factors: Hair loss can be influenced by many factors beyond iron levels, including stress, hormones, or other nutrient deficiencies. It may be worth exploring these with your healthcare provider or a trichologist.
      What You Can Do:
Discuss with Your Doctor: Consider asking about the option of continuing a lower iron dose or getting your ferritin level checked again soon to see if it has reached the target range.
Dietary Iron: Incorporate iron-rich foods like lean meats, spinach, and legumes into your diet to help maintain iron levels naturally.
Monitor Symptoms: Watch for any symptoms of iron overload (like joint pain, fatigue, or unexplained weakness), and if you notice any, contact your doctor.
Maintaining the right balance is key, so keep open communication with your healthcare provider.

Also my b12 levels were 104 which was too low so i had 5 injections and my level reached 500 approx then since I'm a vegetarian my levels again dropped to 206 after 6 months and now I'm on supplements again for that and vitamin d is 32 so can b12 be the reason for hairloss ?

This may be the dumbest question I’ll ask this year … 😂
So , last year I found out I was suffering from severe iron deficiency. Not familiar with what the numbers mean, but when mine was first checked the level was 3 .. doctor didn’t explain anything at all to me, just prescribed me iron, told me to take it and in 3 months come back for recheck. When I had it rechecked it had gone up to 7 .. then up again to 13 . I’m still taking iron supplements, but .. my question is this .. if someone has iron deficiency anemia , does that mean the ferritin level is also low?

I had low ferritin and was a hair loss patient with one of the leading physicians in research - well in advance of a plant based diet. Gut health can play a role not just low iron/ferritin as can having GI bleeding, etc. It is not ideal to just take a supplement without knowing the cause. Fortunately I have good doctors and they confirmed not eating meat had nothing to do with it and advised further workups, while commending me for a healthy plant based diet which reduces other health issues. I am regrowing hair now and I will never change my diet or take supplements unnecessarily as they often have fillers that can compromise the gut.

Low B12 levels can contribute to hair loss, as this vitamin is essential for healthy hair growth and overall scalp health. Here are steps to manage low B12 levels and its impact on hair fall:
B12 Supplements: Taking B12 supplements can help restore your levels. These are available in various forms, including tablets, injections, and sublingual drops. Consult with your doctor to determine the best option for you.
Dietary Changes: Incorporate B12-rich foods into your diet. These include:
      Meat, especially liver and beef
Fish and shellfish, such as salmon, trout, and clams
Dairy products, like milk, cheese, and yogurt
      Eggs
Fortified cereals and plant-based milk alternatives
Regular Monitoring: Keep track of your B12 levels with regular blood tests to ensure they are within a healthy range.
Addressing Absorption Issues: If you have conditions that affect B12 absorption, such as pernicious anemia or gastrointestinal disorders, work with your healthcare provider to manage these conditions effectively.
Holistic Hair Care: Continue following good hair care practices, such as using gentle hair products, avoiding excessive heat styling, and maintaining a healthy scalp.
Stress Management: Since stress can exacerbate hair loss, practice stress-relief techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and exercise.
Consult a Trichologist: For personalized advice and treatment plans, consider consulting a trichologist who can address both your hair loss and nutritional needs.
