    I had to have a hysterectomy because of chronic iron deficiency from severe blood loss. Lack of iron has an enormous impact on the quality of life; at my worst I was unable to get out of bed without being completely out of breath. The fatigue, pallor and hair loss was unrelenting. They gave me two iron infusions right before the surgery, and I’m recovering right now. I ate plenty of iron-rich foods and took supplements, but it was never enough.
    I wish doctors took iron deficiency more seriously, in the past I’ve had a ferritin of 9 and was told ‘well you’re in range, so you’re fine’ those ranges must be UPDATED, too many doctors don’t go any further and aren’t concerned about optimal levels vs. ‘in range’

    As someone with hereditary hemochromatosis, would love a deeper exploration of iron overload and its genetic causes - there are a lot of us out there in the world with this diagnosis and it's wildly misunderstood and understudied.

      My mother has hemochromatosis. Her father died from it. I was told I am anemic which is odd bc I thought that had to do with low iron in the blood, but I don’t know. I just know that I’m exhausted all the time. Do you have to do blood letting?

    There are a lot of substances that decrease iron absorption. Nuts, chocolate, wine, coffee and tea

      Lets add grains, eggs...its so annoying. Tho if u take heme iron supplements it doesnt affect absorption.

    I think most GP’s don’t fully understand interpreting the iron panel. It CAN be complex and without a full iron panel it can be difficult eg iron saturation in relation to ferritin and trans ferritin is important so lower ferritin and low saturation is different to lower ferritin plus high saturation. If you just do total blood count haemoglobin and ferritin you may miss a lot

    • @nickmpower
      @nickmpower 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What does good ferritin but low saturation mean, and what's the best way to resolve it? My saturation is bottom of the range while other iron markers are middle or upper middle

    I was on Ppis for years and not a single doctor ever tested my iron. I had a blood clot and hematologist ran routine bloodwork and my hemoglobin tanked. She ran a iron panel and my ferritin was 3. I had terrible restless legs and arms but never tied to iron deficiency. After I got my iron infusion my restless legs and arms went away. Now I get my iron tested several times a year. I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy done and they were normal. And I got off Ppis. I still take pepsid but I wanted to stop PPIs

    I recently was anemic and I'm on the rebound now. I can't believe how horrible it made me feel. And the most surprising thing is how much it affected my breathing.

      Why was intermittent fasting done. ? You fit into the category of LMHR ( lean mass hyperesponders) iron deficiency however is a revelation for me.

      That is how I feel. Ever since I started doing longer fast and following Dr. Mindy, my period started once every 2 weeks, usually following a 30 or 36 hour fast. I feel like my iron is so low. I don’t have the energy to workout anymore. The exhaustion is on another level. I never eat red meat.

    Could you please talk about iron overload? All tissues need iron but are also damaged by too much if it. Since the body doesn't excrete iron, it's not difficult to end up in this situation.
    Could you also talk about the roles magnesium and copper play in regulating iron?
    Thank you.
