I had to have a hysterectomy because of chronic iron deficiency from severe blood loss. Lack of iron has an enormous impact on the quality of life; at my worst I was unable to get out of bed without being completely out of breath. The fatigue, pallor and hair loss was unrelenting. They gave me two iron infusions right before the surgery, and I’m recovering right now. I ate plenty of iron-rich foods and took supplements, but it was never enough. I wish doctors took iron deficiency more seriously, in the past I’ve had a ferritin of 9 and was told ‘well you’re in range, so you’re fine’ those ranges must be UPDATED, too many doctors don’t go any further and aren’t concerned about optimal levels vs. ‘in range’
WOW your story is mine as well. Not needing to get a hysterectomy and iron infusions but I have been so very sick for 4 years with debilitating and chronic issues, all the same as yours! Chronic fatigue, hair loss, diagnosed “asthma” two years ago when I’ve never had asthma my entire life! I’ll be 44 in a couple months, so I know I’m also perimenopausal. My last cycle lasted two weeks! I have also started on USP progesterone and a liquid iron supplement called Floradix. Like you, I also was eating meat and grass fed beef liver from time to time. My Ferritin is also at a 9 and that is definitely NOT in range!! I don’t think they know what they’re talking about! They say it could take three months or more to come out of this hole. I hope to God so, because I have done nothing but suffer. No Dr has helped me and I have seen a ton! My husband and I spent 100k the last 3 1/2 years trying to figure out what is wrong with me. And to know that it could be something as simple as iron deficiency anemia which is totally reversible! 😒🤦🏻♀️ How are you now??
@@ccaselli7 I hadn’t heard that about the heme iron, just the fact that tannins interfere with absorption or iron. I just found out I have IDA. Started a supplement per my naturopath called Floradix about a weeks ago. Also taking Vit C for better absorption. Really trying to stay away from tannins and thought I was doing myself a favor by eating 3 eggs every morning! 😑 I did hear that if you give yourself a 2 hr window before or after your iron supplement it won’t be a problem. I hoping to come off the supplement after my levels normalize and then I’ll just get my iron from my diet.
As someone with hereditary hemochromatosis, would love a deeper exploration of iron overload and its genetic causes - there are a lot of us out there in the world with this diagnosis and it's wildly misunderstood and understudied.
My mother has hemochromatosis. Her father died from it. I was told I am anemic which is odd bc I thought that had to do with low iron in the blood, but I don’t know. I just know that I’m exhausted all the time. Do you have to do blood letting?
I recently was anemic and I'm on the rebound now. I can't believe how horrible it made me feel. And the most surprising thing is how much it affected my breathing.
@@0_fksgvn955 ah! I just ordered Floradix liquid iron. People gave said good things. My fed blood cell count is very low and I’m hoping it will help. I’m happy for you that you’re doing better. Good luck!
Wow same story here! I just started on my iron supplement a week ago. I was diagnosed with “asthma” a couple years ago at the age of 42, never had asthma my entire life. I couldn’t walk around without feeling like I was going to pass out cause I couldn’t breathe! I knew something wasn’t right! I got C 3 1/2 yrs ago and found out that also depletes your iron. So I’ve probably been anemic my whole life, only after C did my condition become chronic and debilitating! I hope you are so much better, and hope to be there myself one day soon!
I think most GP’s don’t fully understand interpreting the iron panel. It CAN be complex and without a full iron panel it can be difficult eg iron saturation in relation to ferritin and trans ferritin is important so lower ferritin and low saturation is different to lower ferritin plus high saturation. If you just do total blood count haemoglobin and ferritin you may miss a lot
What does good ferritin but low saturation mean, and what's the best way to resolve it? My saturation is bottom of the range while other iron markers are middle or upper middle
@@adhipmitra I needed 30 kgs less. I moved from 96 to 66. I had to increase my metabolism rate and detox my body. But I have lost a lot of muscle and can’t recover this because my exhaustion and iron deficiency
That is how I feel. Ever since I started doing longer fast and following Dr. Mindy, my period started once every 2 weeks, usually following a 30 or 36 hour fast. I feel like my iron is so low. I don’t have the energy to workout anymore. The exhaustion is on another level. I never eat red meat.
I was on Ppis for years and not a single doctor ever tested my iron. I had a blood clot and hematologist ran routine bloodwork and my hemoglobin tanked. She ran a iron panel and my ferritin was 3. I had terrible restless legs and arms but never tied to iron deficiency. After I got my iron infusion my restless legs and arms went away. Now I get my iron tested several times a year. I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy done and they were normal. And I got off Ppis. I still take pepsid but I wanted to stop PPIs
In the full AMA does Peter address what it means if you have HIGH iron saturation but LOW ferritin (normal total iron and iron binding capacity) on blood test?

@@Singer2911 I am taking a liquid supplement for the time being recommended by my naturopath called Floradix, twice daily on an empty stomach. Thanks Dr Attia, as always! My wife has breast cancer and just tested high for transferrin in the stool - a signal for colon cancer. But I guess anemic blood too? She's vegan and her blood has been weak ever since.
Can't raise ferritin (20s) without serum iron going into the red and ferritin not budging. Since I started testing years ago.??? Thinking it might be my mthfr status?
It did cover mines, I've done several times but you need to make a case, like complaining about fatigue, low energy and sleepiness, if you won't complain GP won't order the iron panel for you
Could you please talk about iron overload? All tissues need iron but are also damaged by too much if it. Since the body doesn't excrete iron, it's not difficult to end up in this situation. Could you also talk about the roles magnesium and copper play in regulating iron? Thank you.

It does for me too. It’s a know side effect and should be temporary. My readings go back down within a couple weeks of my last infusion. High bp isn’t significant unless it’s stays elevated for a long time.

There are a lot of substances that decrease iron absorption. Nuts, chocolate, wine, coffee and tea
Lets add grains, eggs...its so annoying. Tho if u take heme iron supplements it doesnt affect absorption.

Since I started intermittent fasting (3 years ago) my cholesterol increased a lot and my iron went down dramatically
