    Right to repair should include a solution for the very common scenario where you have a two year old Android phone that isn't supported anymore but can't flash custom software onto it to speed it up because the bootloader is locked. There is no warranty, the phone is discontinued and no longer in production, and there is no contractual obligation to a carrier when you purchase it. Why is the bootloader locked? And even on brand new phones. It's my phone. I own the hardware. Why am I being forced to have a carrier's bloatware on my phone? I paid for the device in full directly from the OEM, but the cell carrier told the OEM to lock the bootloader before they sell it to me.
    This should be illegal. If some computer company enacted a software lock that prevents you from downgrading Windows or installing a different OS there would be riots in the streets. So why are we allowing wireless carriers in the US to do it with our phones? It's ridiculous. And citing their "free software EULA" is not an appropriate response to this issue because I wouldn't need to abide by your EULA and deal with your bloatware if you didn't force me to do so by literally locking the phone onto your specific software and not letting me flash a different OS. The software is supposed to be open source, yet I'm unable to modify it in these devices because of carrier software locks that are applied to the hardware I paid for in full that persist even beyond the point where the carrier no longer supports the device. It's ridiculous. And it's not just Android phones either. Good luck trying to downgrade your iPhone. At least with an iPhone there's the valid argument that IOS is not open source and ios and the iPhone are sold together as one package. That doesn't hold true for Android phones. Wireless carriers are just being greedy.

      Completely agree, no one is forcing Devs at gunpoint to include older phones into newer software suite, we just want the ability to use what we bought however we like. My windows omouter doesn't force me at gunpoint so that I won't download a virus by mistake, who the hell do these companies think they are to do the same

      You're aware that Google owns Android, hence you have no choice but log into Chrome just to get set up.
      Also funnelled into getting apps from Play Store.

    • @MeowThingy
      @MeowThingy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @@KOZMOuvBORG That isn't true at all. There are other app stores you can get your applications from, such as the Amazon app store, and you can sideload them whenever you want. Chrome is also not required to set up your phone and never has been. You can skip every single setup step on an Android phone if you wanted to and Chrome has never been one of them. This also has nothing to do with the bootloader being locked. There are other operating systems you can install on your phone, such as Lineage, that aren't Android if your bootloader wasn't locked. Lineage is Android-based but it isn't Android in the sense that IPadOS isn't iOS.

    • @RegularCupOfJoe
      @RegularCupOfJoe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That isn't necessarily true. Replaceable rechargeable batteries require an energy intensive process to properly disassemble and dispose of when they are worn out. And whether the device has a "glued in" battery or a replaceable doesn't matter-- the battery still must be disassembled before disposal. Ideally, devices wouldn't use batteries. And if they didn't they would be considerably more environmentally friendly. Of course, that's absurd-- devices need batteries. So, in my opinion, the best solution is to keep improving battery technology. Or find a way to power devices without batteries but without losing the mobility that batteries provide.

      We could never afford a computer but it was all that I wanted. So one year I received a non-working PC that was going to become corporate waste. If it wasn't for the ability to buy used parts or get hand downs from businesses (today they would be sent back since most companies lease PC's from the manufacturers) then I never could have had my own blazing fast 386 🤯🥳.
      The ability to find parts and figure out how to fix and build electronics all started with that little boys RIGHT TO REPAIR back in the '80s.
      True story-
      Back then you called the manufacturers of components and they answered the phone and GOT A HUGE KICK OUT OF GUIDING A 10yr. OLD through the inside of his PC case.

      @@jmk1727 I started using computers in 1st grade, back in 1981, at school. The school had BOTH Apple IIe's and IBM PC's.
      When we finally got a family computer in the early '90s it too was a 386SX by Tandy.
      The last computer I didnt build myself was in 1995, and even then it was custom components put together by a friend, whom owned a computer shop.
      I ended up working for a local computer store, 1999, that was also a Mac authorized sales and service location. Back them we had the schematics for fixing all the Mac products and had no problem getting components.
      Then the iMac came out and suddenly repairs were "send it back" instead of fixing on site. Eventually we found out the iMacs used lesser standards and the boards were DESIGNED, on purpose, to be replaced instead of fixed because of the components used on them.
      That was the beginning of the "disposable" generation of electronics devices in general. Electronics started to become "necessities" instead of luxuries.
      These companies also realized that their new customers were less educated, and less informed, so they didnt get upset when having to buy a new product, because it was cheaper than repairing the old one. These customer never questioned why and didnt know it was because they were being suckered.
      Lobbying against right to repair is 100% about greed for these companies that want the gravy train of building flaws into their products that cause them to fail sooner, to continue.

The battery should have a lifespan of up to 20 years, but once Sony shut the clock server down and that battery dies your PS4 has no way to verify the date and time, so it prevents you from launching games. It's a measure Sony probably put in place to combat piracy, but ironically hacked consoles can get around it so it actually only affects normal users.
      The reason this came up recently is that Sony were planning to shut down the PSN servers for PS3, and that console has a similar issue with its CMOS. With PS3 it only affects digital games though, you can still play disc based games on PS3 offline with a dead CMOS. Apparently on PS4 you can't play anything.

      When the online servers for PS4 die, and your battery also dies, your physical games will be unplayable, because you need to connect to the online servers to sync the date and time, EVEN if you replace the battery with a new one because the server is unreachable the console becomes a brick basically.
