I hate it when these creators say "I've been using X product for months now" when you just KNOW the sponsor segment is the first time they ever actually used it in their life and after the video they just threw it away/sent it back to the company and never thought about it again
Even if they have used it for months. I know colleagues in tech alongside me who have used things their whole lives, and still don't know why/what/how.
And this is why I hate those fucking people, lying to their subscribers. They are horrible people, someone who's legit and care would never lie, even if it means to earn a paycheck.
Or they have an issue then talk about how great the customer service is. Of course you got white glove service, they need you to keep shilling the product.
the thing that sucks the most is that even if you did your due diligence and decided to avoid a honey sponsorship if the viewers installed it from someone else it might still steal your affiliate even if you had nothing to do with them. truly scummy behavior.
If they item didnt actually cost what you were paying. Then both sides were trying to scam the consumer. This is like the theif calling the burgler a crook. We dont make laws to protect sales people. So there is no wrong doing here. Not legally anyway.
thats the part im surprised nobody else said, its not even the fact that it scams the people who promoted it, it scams anyone with an affiliate program no matter what. like, you could make an affiliate link for a product you genuinely have interest in and tell anyone whos interested in it, they all agree to buy it. you wake up excited that you might finally get to pay this months rent, then you see you have 0$ in your bank account because they all used a malicious browser extension you didnt even know existed and it just robbed you of all your commissions. its actually terrifying that they got away with this for so long, i couldnt imagine the amount of gaslighting people did to themselves by saying "its just a bug" or "maybe i should refresh the page..?" and never getting it...
@@franktkalcevic5342 because people like Louise keep repeating this "it was actually ripping off the creators who were shilling it!" stuff, as if non-sponsored affiliate links were unaffected.
I was checking out my purchases on a website last night and Honey said it found the best deal for me which was nothing. None of their coupon codes worked. It took me 3 minutes on my own to find a coupon code for $15 off. Honey is a scam and I uninstalled it. Thanks for your video.
I got a similar speech from my dad when I was in my early teens, late 80's. I had got in trouble for some indiscretion I had committed at school, honestly can't remember what is was. Now I started my explanation as to why I had done what I had done by expressing "What's the point if the whole world is in such disarray and there so many other problems, political and environmental, that make my indiscretion look absolutely insignificant". He stopped me and said "You can't go around trying to clean up the backyards of the whole world when your own backyard look terrible, you need to clean your backyard first before you can even think of going out into the world and helping other people fix their backyards."
@@reshpeckIf that's a quote from that person in particular, then it could very easily be that their dad heard it and repeated it because it's a good analogy.
@@DarkForce2024 They were a pretty big sponsor several years ago. The Google Ads Transparency Center shows that "joinhoney" is still making Google Search ads, but not image or video ads.
I once tried honey to see if it could save me money with how hard people were shilling it. I tend to look up coupons codes or try to find deals, and I thought it'd be pretty cool to have some sort of extension that would already scrape the internet for these codes and give them to me. Turned out, 100% of the time it literally couldn't find a coupon or anything of value, even when I would use websites like Papajohns (SM25 for 25% off btw), which has insane amounts of coupon codes online - nothing. At that point I realized honey couldn't live up to any of its advertising and uninstalled it.
Many years ago I worked for my Uncle on the farm. A neighbor who had moved from the city asked him how to get the county to cut the grass along the road so nicely like the road past my uncle's farm. His answer provided all you need to know about him: "I have no idea. I do it myself as the county is busy doing things I can't do. Cutting the side of the road a couple times a month is simple, and as you say it looks so nice, plus it gives satisfaction and a sense of pride in my farm."
@ Affiliate revenue isn’t something anyone is owed, but it is something that partners and platforms agree upon as a fair exchange for driving business to their site. Sniping affiliate revenue undermines trust and damages the program for everyone involved.
@@thewhitefalcon8539 ??? Yes, they are owed affiliate revenue. If I say to you "If you do X for me, I will give you money," and then you do the thing.... you think it's okay for me to just say "nah, never mind. I don't owe you anything. Adapt or perish?"

I mean, he was right to be skeptical, even then. You really do have to always ask yourself "but what is the catch?" I'm glad I was brought up this way, my father would have said the same thing.
That story about your grandpa is really lovely, I'm glad it got to be shared with the world so a piece of him can be remembered. It's rare to see such a thoughtful response to a student asking about an industry they're interested in. Modern influencers sure do influence, but it's rarely in positive ways. It's good to be reminded sometimes that the impacts we make on our smaller circles of influence are sometimes the most impactful
@@FuturesPast1 Not the same company, but many of the people who originally developed Honey are developing Pie. I don't know for certain whether they are doing the same thing, but it certainly sounds similar and with their track record I think it would be wise to be cautious about them.
You sir are wise beyond your years! Your grandfather affected more than his little corner of the world by influencing you which has in turn influenced me! You are appreciated my friend!
I'm just a truck driver by day and XDA developer by night helping people with roms and kernels in 2024 for no money. Your channel is my favorite of al time. Merry Christmas Rossman!
the story about your grandfather hit me in the chest like a golf club against a window. it's genuinely a beautiful story, and one i wish to reflect with my own action in the coming new year. thank you for inspiring me, Mr.Rossmann. i really appreciate the effort you've put into your little corner of the world.
I lost so much respect for everyone that was sponsored by Established Titles. The only product I have gotten because a channel was sponsored is Displate.
Lots of people asked _"how would you know honey is a scam?"_ You don't need to examine browser cookies or click inspect element to do any of this. You only need to do one thing: Ask the person offering you thousands of dollars to promote a browser extension that provides you with free coupon codes how they are making the money to pay you. Anytime somebody offers me something that seems even remotely too good to be true, I ask them how they make their money. If they cannot provide me with a reasonable explanation, I tell them to go away. Nothing is free. And nobody's paying me without benefiting themselves.
Honey has always been in a kind of "grey area" where it was like "obviously a free browser extension has to be doing something shady under the hood, but maybe it's just selling your personal data - other than that, it seems semi-OK." No-one could have really known the depths of the scam until it was exposed, so I'm not really disappointed about creators who have taken Honey sponsorships (as long as they address the situation honestly). Established Titles, on the other hand, was fully known to be a scam from the very start. To the point where even minutes after the first video with Established Titles as its sponsor was posted, that creator's viewers rushed to the comments to call it out for how obviously a scam it was. So I also have zero respect for creators who ever took sponsorships from Established Titles, as all creators should have higher standards and not just care about their bottom line, even though there's only so much they can reasonably be expected to be aware of.
Your grandfather's (and your) attitude towards cleaning up your own little corner is so aspirational, Louis. It's how everyone should live their life, and sometimes we all just need that little push in the right direction to try and make a difference. I appreciate you. Merry Christmas!
@@solidhyrax That is fucking dystopian as shit. Digital money isn't already bad enough, now has to be strictly PayPal? This world has gone to shit. Not haven't, already has.
I deleted it a few years ago when I realized how scammy paypal was and froze a lot of people's money for no reason. They were always scammy. Now, you know it's a REAL scam company, and not just scammy.
I really liked that story, and I agree with your definition of "influencer". Funny enough, that's how you make societies better. Instead of clout and popularity concentrated to a small handful of "influencers" who are doing random shit for recognition, you have everyday people doing what they can to make "their corner of the world" a little bit better.
I got honey a long time ago. I deleted it the same day when I tested it on amazon and amazon ended up giving me better discounts than honey. Also other than amazon, Honey gave me very little to no coupons, and the very few ones I got were like only 3-5% off.
Same many years ago, gave it a shot, took no time at all to realise it was garbage that didn't work, uninstalled. Not surprised now to know it sucked for the same reason most things do now: for the sake of profit. All the more reason to block ads and sponsors, it's nearly all scams, no point wading through them
Honey makes more money on the commission if they offer you a 3% discount than a 30% discount. Store makes more and honey gets the same % on a bigger sale.
I can't stress how much I have grown to appreciate you and your channel over the years, thank you for everything you do and stand for - the world is lucky to have you in it!
People like your grandpa is one of the reasons I'm volunteering as much as I can, and I'll try to pass it on as much as I can too. And even if I suffer from several chronic conditions, I'll try to help clean up my little corner of the world, help other people, give others a smile or a hello regardless if it's a CEO or a homeless person. Thank you and merry Christmas.
You make such a great point about trauma and healing through repairing things. Personally, I found it to be the most healing to learn to repair and restore broken or unwanted things. It started from looking at doctors instagram pages overseas where surgeons would repair peoples limbs and they would restore their functionality. Some of the destruction on peoples limbs were so incredibly displacing it seemed hopeless to even try but their limbs healed and they were cared for so lovingly. After the surgeon phase I began to find things and restore them. To this day almost everything, every physical object I own, is acquired secondhand or from discards. I even make my own shoes. Not only does it bring you joy to repair and create things, it shows that we care about our world and we have respect for our lives and the lives of others. Thinking critically with an open mind can bring you everything you need with what you've already got, even if it's only your two hands and the thoughts of the potential to manifest particular necessities and/or conveniences. Great video.
I ve heard majority of vpn comes from ex israeli intelligence ,then becoming tech entrepreneurs ... I dont really trust anything is ''private'' ,never going to pay for more ''privacy'' just to get honey potted even more..
Exactly! To both @CZpersi and @Morpheus-pt3wq 🙂 The worst thing that bothers me, is - “secure” yourself when in public WiFi’s. Sure it helps to have a secure tunnel, but if you’re doing anything on a legitimate HTTPS website, the data is already secured by the nature of SSL. The fear mongering of security with their service is unbearable. It gets under my skin so much. Granted, I can see value in location spoofing if you want to get access to restricted content, but (and I do think this is just mainly because of my background and interest in software development, but I’d rather have my own VPN set up on a server that I control. Similar to what Louis has mentioned before with WireShark. If some other company is controlling the end nodes, who’s to say that VPN company isn’t selling your data right back to the people that they claim they’re “protecting” you from. Nah fam, I’m good 🙂
Most of them just advertise it as a way to watch foreign netflix now, it's funny. The average person isn't going to have good opsec even if you taught them how and what it is, they would mess it up. Even then, with vpns, the only two people should be using are mullvad and proton. Even then I'm not sure if proton have previously handed over data, I'm a bit behind myself... I know mullvad still tells nation states to gtfo though.
MKBHD is the disappointing one amongst these influencers. this brother rides on his due diligence and how he refuses 90% of the things that come to his inbox and somehow he doesn't catch this. LTT apparently found out and didn't inform anybody, they just stopped the sponsorship. You can't trust any of these people.
Isn't that the guy who was paid by Apple to do an "interview" with Tim Cook, which was the most obvious advertisement? Louis made an entire video pissed off when it happened.
the one of the biggest `tech influencer` for juveniles, Linus Tech Tips, dropped cooperation with Honey some time ago, because they find out it is a scam. And contracted another one, THAT WORKS THE BY THE SAME SCHEME 😂😂
Going into a corner of society and not just helping, but getting others to follow along as well is an excellent guiding purpose. I may just be a college student just starting out, but this principle is why I went into tech and is why I do what I do every day. Well said Louis, we need more people like your grandfather in this world.
Merry Christmas Mr Rossmann. I’m so happy that you have followed your Grandfather’s legacy and trying to cleanup your corner of the world. You are very right as to what an influencer should be.
Caring more about his values than making the most amount of money possible, and having the intestinal fortitude to use his platform of 2M+ subs to say the quiet part out loud, the part that's on the minds of way too many people who just push it out of the head to toe the line or make the most money.
That is true. He was not just an influencer, but a true leader that left a legacy behind for others to strive to have the same impact on other people's lives. Thank you for sharing this with the world.
Thanks for describing clearly how normal affiliate programs work. I've seen people cry bias for linking Amazon, B&H, or other general affiliate shops. But they don't understand that the linked product doesn't matter one way or the other.
Of course. I'd imagine the reason LTT only ended their contract and didn't make any video on this when they found out years ago is because it'd open them up to legal action.
It always rang my bells. But I couldn‘t tell exactly why - and as an IT guy myself (for whatever that‘s worth), I think they had a really advanced way of scamming their promoters. It appears just once more, when something is free, you’re the product (and in this case even worse, even ripping off their patrons). Thanks for raising more awareness. => And Merry Christmas !
TH-camrs are so spineless. They’d recommend shit on a stick if it paid enough. Any time a TH-camr is sponsored by some bullshit I immediately lose respect for them. They don’t care about their audience.
Depends on your TH-camr, if they rarely do sponsors and then they do one, you have a higher chance of them actually believing in that product. I wouldn’t paint everyone with the same brush
@@thewhitefalcon8539that’s not capitalism. It’s really sad how so many people have bought into the BS that gets labled as capitalism. At its core it’s the free market. It has been defiled as a concept by those who want a controlled economy, which is objectively worse.

Always wondered why internet celebrities were called influencers as opposed to just celebrities. It struck me as odd, Orwellian even. Wish we would just go back to calling them celebrities.
I agree. I always found "influencer" name to have negative connotation which struck me the wrong way. I always used words like TH-cam personality and such instead.
@@MaaZeus I think the negative connotation is exactly why we call them influencers. The negative connotation when I call a garbage channel like MKBHD or Linus Tech Tips influencers is very much intentional. I'm putting them down on purpose.
one of the most messed up thing about Honey is that small creators were disproportionately screwed over because sponsored ones at least got paid by their own screw up.
This is one of my favourite videos you've made. Loved hearing the story of a real influencer. Keep doing what you're doing as all the videos of yours that I've watched come across really genuine and heartfelt. 👍

I want to learn it, if only for modding Gameboys and stuff, but I just don't really know where to start...especially because I am visually impaired and thus almost blind. Videos would help me, cuz they're big. Not soldering under a microscope is probably never gonna be a thing for me lol. That aside, I am always happy to see others remember and live what "influencer" means and entails. It stems from "to influence". And we should influence for something we believe in.
Exactly. I've been thinking the job description "influencer" is the exact perfect description because it denotes authority AND responsibility. These people SHOULD feel the weight of their public facing job to change lives, and in that way, change society, when they are using their words to influence people. These people ARE influencing people, and I hope that responsibility crushes those that can't hack it and really strengthens those that can.
I couldn't agree less on the responsibility part and couldn't disagree more on the authority part. No one is forced to fall for them. Responsibility goes both ways. That's why It's *really* long overdue that people get taught media competence. Never understood this whole "Influencer" BS to be begin with tbh.
@1337Shockwav3 every person has a responsibility to seek truth and be diligent in what they present and represent to others. It's each of our responsibilities as members of a greater whole. If you willingly take on a public face, your responsibility is even greater because you have taken a mantle of informer, teacher, truth teller. Even the Bible says the public facing person in the church, the pastor, has more responsibly than the laity, and awaits a bigger punishment for messing with people in that capacity. This has always been true. It's why kings got assassinated by their people, and peasants only got beaten by other peasants when they did something wrong. (Not exclusively of course, but overall.) Influencers take on that mantle of informer, truth teller, "bringer of light," touchstone for all the people willingly, and they should consider that when they do. The very foundation of a low trust society is the idea of "I do what I want, it's your responsibility to make sure I'm not fucking with you, straight up lying, or purposefully trying to do you harm." Influencer is still the perfect title for their job. And I hope it CRUSHES those who can't hack it and strengthens those that can. Have a merry Christmas. I hope the reason for the season speaks light into all our hearts. Be blessed.

Yeah, same. Basically, if I can't see where the money is coming from, I don't touch it. With the amount of advertisements, it had to be very profitable. But why would any company pay Honey to help customers lower prices? That makes no sense. The app is free, so the customer doesn't pay. So... where's all the money coming from?

I lost so much respect for everyone that was sponsored by Established Titles. The only product I have gotten because a channel was sponsored is Displate.
Lots of people asked _"how would you know honey is a scam?"_
You don't need to examine browser cookies or click inspect element to do any of this.
@@rossmanngroup That's something Markiplier asked himself back in 2020 and went off on a 5 minute tangent in the middle of a random stream.

That's awesome. I'd love to see what type of shoes you made!

Apart from the honey scandal. I cannot stand the VPN ad sponsors; being a software developer, I hate how they bluntly lie about how it works 🙄
I ve heard majority of vpn comes from ex israeli intelligence ,then becoming tech entrepreneurs ... I dont really trust anything is ''private'' ,never going to pay for more ''privacy'' just to get honey potted even more..
Like "protect your privacy" by actually routing all of your internet traffic through our black-box serveru?😂
They also tend to lie about how "good" that exact VPN service is and make it look better, than it really is.
Exactly! To both @CZpersi and @Morpheus-pt3wq 🙂
The worst thing that bothers me, is - “secure” yourself when in public WiFi’s.

These people ARE influencing people, and I hope that responsibility crushes those that can't hack it and really strengthens those that can.

They probably had some non-disparagement clause in their contract that prevented Linus from speaking on this, or at least made it too risky from a business standpoint.
He have talked about building a moat towards other youtubers. This could be one
@Pepsiphopia This doesn't exclusively affect TH-camrs who promote Honey, it affects every content creator out there. It would've been in their own best financial interest to call it out unless there was something like a non-disparagement clause in the contract.
Hey, you're right. I always roll my eyes at the word "influencer", but I'm really just sick of our culture's conceptualization of that word. It's wrong.
He say's he's not good at talking into a camera but then proceeds to be someone i feel deserves the "real" definition of "Influancer".
Love you Louis, keep it up!
I started fixing old lighting that was being thrown away. They may be less efficient, but when it one to flicker to life, it feels amazing.
And Mr Jack still is influencing through you today 🎉. Thanks Louis for sharing this incredible story. I’m looking forward to the long version when you’re ready. 👍👍😎👍👍
I would triple like this video if I could! Very good story with a lot of meaning! Thank you! Respects to your grandfather Mr. Jack Rossmann! Keep on doing what you're doing. Merry Christmas!
Louis. Don’t Change. You’re awesome. The world needs more people like you. Your grandpa’s story is a good reminder to me to not give up, put my head down, and keep trying to make my corner of the world a better place. Thanks for sharing.
I almost joined that App years ago. Glad, I didn't... seemed a bit sketchy at best and a scam at worst.
@@amandajean7738 Me too. Sounded too good to be true...looking at other comments here it wasn't even that great anyway. Happy to have avoided it.
Yeah, same. Basically, if I can't see where the money is coming from, I don't touch it. With the amount of advertisements, it had to be very profitable. But why would any company pay Honey to help customers lower prices? That makes no sense. The app is free, so the customer doesn't pay. So... where's all the money coming from? Because no such a thing as free money.
You're an incredible person Louis. Hearing about your grandpa it is obvious why. Your grandpa may not have been able to directly alter the lives of all those kids, but his actions have clearly influenced who you are today, and now through this video he is still influencing us all these years later. If he could see you now I am certain he would be proud. Thank you for sharing his story

Just no words for the quality of this message. My already considerable esteem for you, and the quality of your character, continues to grow. Thank you.
I simply ignore anything that TH-camrs are "sponsored" by. I view it as something they are forced to do to make their videos financially viable and simply skip ahead to where the video continues. I would never actually consider using any of the garbage they advertise.
I love everything you said and it touched me emotionally. I am a migrant from Germany and have changed my job and will hopefully soon be a social worker. I now have so much respect for your grandfather that I would like to find out more. These are people who are actually genuine and authentic and who deeply touch other people who have had contact with them.
Thanks for this Louis!
And truly, thanks for all your efforts!
Never used Honey, but good to know they are worse than I thought.
Hearing about your grandfather brought tears to my eyes. He sounds like he was as an awesome guy.
Merry Christmas mate.
9:22 That is admirable and touching. He gave them some purpose and goal, and a good mentor. This very much needed nowadays. Wonderful man.
11:30 Clearly that is not the case nor outcome. You are the loudest voice of right to repair in our current society. Being aware of the problem is the frst step in finding a solution to that problem.
11:45 I bet those kids he influenced and inspired will never forget him and will be a story and inspiration for their children.
You have no idea how many people around the world you have helped. Around 9 years ago I started watching your videos, as they were quite entertaining, though I was not able to understand the repair itself as I was just a line cook. Now I'm a technician doing board lever repair with quite a few wrinkles on my otherwise smooth brain. Thanks Louis. Keep it up
Luis, you might be a complete mess in some aspects of your life, but you are a genuine, amazing person and I love your videos.
I can't fix anything with solder if my life depended on it, but your wake up shouts for all of us reached me all the way in Bosnia many years ago.
Thank you.
And on that note, here is a paraphrase of a propriate quote: There is no use to shout -it's dark! Just light a candle.
Merry Christmas Mr Rossmann. Your stories inspire many and it has given me a new perspective today that I am, now that I have it, very grateful for. Please do not ever change, I sincerely wish you all the best for your future and hope your ambitions come to fruition.
Remember NY in early 70's. Not being member of street gangs, I've got a pair of scars in Central Park.
That story about Mr.Jack was so heartwarming. Brilliantly written. This guy needs a statue of him in the area he helped.
That aside, your comment on the definition of what an Influencer should be was SPOT ON!
Ever since VPNs started I always had to laugh at people who thought VPNs are secure because it's encrypted. The VPN company holds the encryption key and so can sell off your info still. I know this and I'm not even a techie. Tis common sense.
Will be the last Christmas for me ( I cba with it anymore. It's not about celebration anymore, it's about money) but hope you have a Merry Christmas Louis and a GREAT new year! : ]
Merry Christmas Louis 🎉🎉
I long ago reached the point of assuming any product advertized on youtube is sub standard & overpriced at best, and too often outright malicious scams.
What happened to the frame rate on this video
It's almost as if the camera picked up on what he said at 16:00 and decided to trash the production quality of the video.
It may be an issue on TH-cams end, I've seen a few different videos from varied channels that have the same fps issues
this is insanely valuable. in my own mind, the definition of Influencer was also corrupted. you're right, your grandfather was a REAL influencer, and so are you. Thank you for everything that you do. You deserve more fame, I know that you would continue to do great things, but with a larger reach.
2:52 "...this is: Highly Fxxked-Up(tm)..."😹
Happy Christmas Rossmann
