- Join me on an eye-opening journey as we venture to the summit of Doi Suthep mountain to witness the current state of the Burning Season in Chiang Mai 2024! Unfortunately, things have taken a challenging turn over the last couple of weeks, and the smoky season has unmistakably settled in. 😷 The Air Quality Index (AQI) levels hit the red zone just before March 2024, and it's time to explore the impact on this beautiful city.
From the top of Doi Suthep the reality really hits of the burning season and pollution in Thailand 2024.

I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley before leaded gasoline was banned and there were smog alerts so bad they'd shut down recess. The smog was so thick you couldn't see across a football field. Your eyes watered and your lungs stung. Now I'm in Northern California where moderate smoke from recent fires got people in hysterics. Didn't really bother me, it wasn't bad at all. I'm in good health and I'd seen so much worse. This smoke doesn't look so bad that it would prevent me from retiring in Chiang Mai. See you soon Wayne, soon enough..
I also grew up in the sgv and now I’ve moved to chiang mai. It’s a similar kind of smog. Not intolerable at all.
I am presently in Louisiana they burn cane here mid winter after harvest, it truly is toxic!!
Me too, I grew up in Duarte, California back in the 70's. You couldn't see that mountain behind the city during smoggy days. I had constant nosebleeds as a child, courtesy of that smog. Having lived in Chiang Mai for nearly a year (2019/2020), it wasn't pleasant but I got out of town before it got bad. More depressing and dismal looking than anything most of the time...and a good rain washes it away. I'll be retiring to Chiang Mai in a few years, no matter what.
This city is still the place for me. I've lived through most burning seasons. It's not great, but like you said, I can live through it.
La Verne in the 70's checking in! Lived in the shadow of Mt. Baldy (10,000ft/3,000m) and couldn't see it most summer days. When the Santa Ana winds kicked in and blew the smog out to Catalina it was amazing.
Ohh, feeling the tug on my heartstrings while watching this vid. My family and I were frequent flyers to Doi Suthep and surrounding area over the years and I'm missing it so! I remember looking out at the city below and struggling to see anything through the smoke, You hit the nail on the head though, coming to Chiang Mai at any time is special, smoke, rain or clear skies. Your vids keep me motivated to fight the good fight and get back to Thailand and Chiang Mai in particular! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Jen 😉😊
Yes Jen, Chiang Mai is a special place, even with the smoke. No other place like Chiang Mai.
Thanks for the update Wayne. Wat Suthep looking nice as well 👍🏼😃
Cheers mate. Suthep still looks a Bobby Dazzler mate.
Your vids are the best and most current on the air quality situation. I subscribed.
Thank you 👌
Thumbs up 👍 Wayne
Thanks mate 👍
Thanks Wayne for the video! Very helpful as I am planning my short tripto Chiang Mai end of April. Would you think the air conditions would be better by then?
Good on ya mate.
👌👌👌
Awesome video Wayne! We get really bad smoke every summer in the Okanagan area of British Columbia Canada
Thanks ! I always wanted to go Canada.
thx for a great vid
Thanks 👍
Good honest update mate - it is what it is , not ideal for everyone but making people aware that may not be familiar - Thanks WW 😎👋👍🙏
Yes mate, it is what it is. Some people don't mind it. Cheers Ant.
Wayne, all you can do is protect yourself as much as possible and remain positive...
It's been wet, cold and miserable in Ireland since I met you in November......
Head south to the Islands for a change of scenery. What I wouldn't give for that about now 😊
Hope all is well Denis, it's really hot here now mate. The smoke isn't great, gotten worse in the last few days. I've got another trip up my sleeve mate 👍
Wayne look after number one and get out of there for a few weeks. Just checked the AQ for Cairns. Comes in at a whopping 10. Chiang
Mai is 16 times more polluted than my home town. It's around 54 in the part of HCMC where I'm staying now.
Hey Wayne cheers for the great info on Chiang Mai I can’t wait to get there and take a “walk-about “ I arrive the 22 April do you think the smoke will still be bad then?
Nobody knows What it will be like in April, but I think it will be getting a lot better by then. Thanks
Does look great up there 😮
Not the best of days mate.
@@WalkAboutWayne shame 😳
I did a vlog from there 6 days ago and the smoke was starting to come in. It's weird I had never been to Doi Suthep, and now watching your video, I'm like, yep I know where he is, oh yeah I remember that area LOL. I am trying to organise to go to Pattaya in the second week of March.
Nice one Paul, have a good trip mate.
imagine the uproar if we charged foreigners more to get in places in the uk 😂😂. a thai woman said to me you are foreigner make more money pay more money. we went to a waterfall one day Thais its free as soon as he saw me he smiled going farang and said 200 baht. another time we went to a zoo for Thais 200 baht for foreigner 800 baht. i love thailand but the stigma of farangs being loaded and them just assuming we should pay more is annoying at times.
Don't get me started on dual pricing haha. I hear you Craig, I'm not the biggest fan of it either.
Thanks for the update mate. I just flew into Bangkok yesterday and my plan was after a couple days head up to Chiang Mai. But if you think its wise to stay south I think I will change my plans.
No worries mate, I'm just saying what I think and my opinion. It's up to you buddy.
@@WalkAboutWayne oh definitely mate, we all appreciate it to.
@@gungy9544 Have a great time buddy!
Great vid mate I must say you being single in Thailand is good choice since I stayed single there never been happier 👍👍
Thank mate. Yes, single is the way to go in Thailand. 👍👍
Yes I remember some days I would turn around & just go back into our condo as it was that bad. When thinking long term it is hard not to believe it is not doing our lungs long term damage or worse that it is cancerous. We don't miss it. Take Care Wayne!
Yes, best to stay in on the worst days. Little better today. Cheers Mike.
How far south do they do the burning do you know wayne?
i assume chiang rai is similar with burning?what about Pai and Ma hong song??
i want to find a northern area that isn't smoggy to live if possible
that time of yr again... seemed like yesterday when you said you were getting tired of addressing 😜 > that said & in your defense (not that you need anyone to do so) ...kinda hard to ignore when touching down at Ground 0 as You are.
Thanks Wayne for portraying things as they are 👍
The people want the updates , so that's what the people will get. A lot of worried people in my messages 👍
@@WalkAboutWayne > makes ya wonder... especially for those residing there & showing concern/worry ....wonder how many are being proactive with OTC detoxing holistics like glutathione + all the other things that are known to help with both detoxing & boosting immunity 🤔
Carry on Sir 🫡
I was in Phnom Penh and Pattaya May/June of 2023 and it was devastating. I got very sick. Can you tell me when it will clear up this year? Thanks
They freely advertise that FOREIGNER pay 40 baht whilst Thai pay nothing. Only peanuts but its the principle of it. Lovely view from the lookout though and can imagine even better outside of the burning season. Maybe they should discount down to 20 baht due to the diminished view 😂 A few more months yet of burn off I'd say. Nice video mate 🤩
Don't get me started on dual pricing mate haha. I didn't moan about it to much today, but we all know my views on it. It's a great view up there normally yes mate. Another month and half is my reckoning, mid April. Cheers mate.
I think its great tax payers get to enjoy certain things they pay for with their labour free of charge, excellent idea. They should just make it across the board for foreigners who are working and paying tax also
Advertising charging only foreigners for certain attractions and doubling prices on other things is straight up discrimination. It's a really good way to keep potential visitors from choosing Thailand for their next vacation. @@WalkAboutWayne
Im going there this may. and i want to go to mae kampong village. So will it be so bad there?
My wife and I were planning to retire in CM, but the crap air was the deal breaker. The problem's been going on for far too long - and getting worse every year - to think the gov't cares to solve it. Shame really.
Yep, it's just something we all live with in Chiang Mai. The pros outway the cons and we just leave for a couple months each year. I'm not sure it gets worse every year, but it is a problem that doesn't look like it is getting solved. Thanks
@@WalkAboutWayne Thanks for your msg Wayne. The only thing gov'ts understand is money, or lack thereof. If enough tourists stayed away and enough expats left CM, the smog would be dealt with immediately. Money talks. But we know neither of those scenarios are gonna happen.
Hola! Can’t you go south? I could not deal with the smoke. Spoke with my friend this am, she is overwhelmed and is planning a trip to Hua Hin….blessings dear…stay safe!
Hua Hin has been awful too, I think it's getting better down there now though. Thanks.
Finally some pollution! I was getting tired of waking up to that blue sky and the Sun blinding me every morning 😭
Happy Days are here again 🔥
We are breathing fresh clean air in Danang Vietnam and won't be returning to Chiang Mai until May. Air pollution is the biggest killer. Our Doctor at Ram hospital told us not to stay in CM during the smokey season and we have been following his advice for the last 10 years!
I really like Da Nang, I was there last year. The Air in Da Nang can get bad sometimes though, and they burn a lot of plastic. It's a lot better than Chiang Mai now though.,👍
@@WalkAboutWayne have to disagree been coming here for last 7 years and never had bad air in Danang. It's bad in the North and South of Vietnam though - keep up the good work 👍
@tWhyWhenWhere No worries, we'll agree to disagree. Hope all is well in and thanks for watching. 🙏
Reminds me of a typical smoggy day in Los Angeles
I've heard about LA, sounds really bad at times.
@@WalkAboutWayneThat’s one reason we moved to Texas over 30 years ago.
Air quality here in North Texas today is 28.
Absolute Hell
Rural Sukothai , Rice fields that have NOT been baled for hay , are being burned right now , where I am ,
Obviously the government regulations are ignored
Peter
A cold grey & windy day in the UK or a warm hazy day in Chiang Mai?
Mmm, now let me think about that...
Yes, I have spent a few burning seasons there 😊
🤣 When you put it like that Hmmmm. I choose CM too 😂
Is the smoke worse or better in the mountains. The skies look very blue at your altitude and makes me wonder.
It seems to get trapped in the city, it's shaped like a valley and the smoke just sits in a bowl.
Similar conditions in Darwin in the dry season. The bush fires here leave burnt grass all over the vehicles everywhere. Strong smell as well. Some of it is accidental and some deliberate but always makes eyes water and causes sneezing. Probably the same in ChaingMai ?
It has got a little bit better in the last couple days, but it will be like you described soon.
What do you think April is going to be like? Booked a month there.
Nobody knows, but I will stick my neck out and say, smokey.
Is it worse now than 3 weeks ago when you posted the video?
I'm.not there at the minute buddy
What is the condition right now? Thank you for the video
Not so good.
😢 thank you!
Hii - planning to come from 3/10-13. Is it recommended that I reroute?
I can't answer that for you, sorry. It's not been so bad in the last couple days but nobody knows what each day will be like.
@@WalkAboutWayne ty!
I arrived in Chiang Mai on February 26, 2022 and left on April 10th, and the air wasn't nearly this bad during that entire period!😳 I will definitely not be visiting again during the spring.
It's not pleasant at the minute.
Hi, would the burning season be over by end of April?
Nobody knows, but probably by the end of April.
Last year wasn't bad. The years before was bad as during February. This year nothing. I'm near Fang north of Chiang Mai and past 2 days was low smog. But other then that, blue sky's and sunny.
Good thing for my breathing but. Happy it's clear so far here.
Last year was really bad, one of the worst in a while for the records, I do believe..it must have been different in Fang. The ones before that was good, during COVID. Glad to hear it's all good in Fang though. 👍
Im guessing you are going to Penang or KL Malaysia, 😉
Could be Jeff,
I was up Doi Suthep on Saturday Wayne I thought the pollution was bad, time to leave the area😏
Yes mate, it's well and truly arrived now 😦
What is it like now
I've been away for a while. I've heard it has been bad.
Maybe burning season is a great time for you to do your little trips ❤keep it in mind
👌 All will be revealed soon Beverly 😉
Hows pai this days?
I would say Pai is similar pollution.
I was here mid February to the end of March last year and it was exactly like it is now. By mid March you'll smell the smoke in the city everyday. Didn't stop me from moving here to live though. The smoke season is when two industries clash, the Agriculture and Tourism, by mid March its like switch has been turned off the tourists will be gone. Sad for tour operators because their income is suddenly cut off when there's still a good 3 months until the wet season.
Yes, mid March will probably be the worst. A lot more people I know are leaving in the next few days.
@@WalkAboutWayne I can't believe people get so upset by it
@brentonlett3417 Upset? You mean moaning about the smoke or leaving?
I remember my first 400+ day in CM. Holy moly was it bad.
Yes, not good. It goes a lot higher than that too.
Yeah, it looks bad. Does it actually smell burnt? Do you find it wears you out faster when you're walking or doing sports? Do old people avoid CM because of this?
When I lived there, it smelled like a forest fire....which makes sense right? Burning grass and vegetation.
It's pretty bad the last few days. I find that I can smell it in the early mornings. The conditions have slowed me down in previous years, yes. I can never comment on other people mate, I just share my own views . I would say though, for sure people avoid it.
We popped down to Chiang Mai day before yesterday to visit friends and found the air quality a bit worse than at home in Chiang Rai. I really missed my air filters at night and didn't sleep very well. It is what it is but at home I can at least control the air quality inside the house. Complaining about the smoke doesn't do any good, just like complaining about the weather is a waste of time.
It has been a little better today, I didn't notice it to much while out and about. Yep, nope not worth complaining but us westerners love a good burning season moan.
It's interesting the burning season is worse now because of the sugarcane being made into biofuel doesn't sound very green to me
Yes, lot's of factors behind the burning.
I'm writing from Chiang Mai and the air is not bad. I have breathed much, much worse during the No. California wild fires. Hot here though !
It did get better some days after. I wouldn't say good but it was alot better. It looks good in CM today though 👍
At which part is he talking about the weather? Thanks before!
I don't know, just skip forward
Honestly medieval farming practice that is burning off......it's affecting us down here next to the ocean...
There have been many News Reports of Big Out of Control Hill Fires near Chiang Mai. The helicopters trying to release water on them have not had much effect. So this is Not just the Usual Burning in the region
I've not seen or heard the Helicopter this year yet. It's nice to know it's out there with the water though. Let's hope is improves mate.
Man that sucks (terrible Pun) Farq that - straight down to H/H or lower, allegedly Gov talk to stop the Smog is all "Smoke and Mirrors" to get the Tourists in. Pack the bags and the Lower Coast is very Enticing, allegedly nice Ladies down that way.
It started off well but it was bad on this day. Today was a little better. I've always got a plan up my sleeve buddy.
Wow, that’s super bad man
It's getting there mate 😦
Chiang Mai is cupped / locked in ! between Myanmar and Laos burning seasonal farmed fires.... it will take years to change...all that! some Thai fires and no wind doesn't help too...
I wonder how that expat American family is doing now that burning season has arrived. It's bad enough that Thai children have to endure the pollution but to put very young children through this unnecessarily is bordering on child abuse. I love Chiang Mai but I would never chose to live there with young children. It has been estimated that burning season is the equivalent of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. Take care.
the Thai PM said today that he will not declare Chiang Mai a state of emergency since it would scare the tourist. he must be joking, the horse is out of the barn
Yes, that's not good to hear.
Life expectancy UK: 82,31 years. Life expectancy Thailand: 79,91 years. Average life expetancy all countries: 73.4 years. Data taken from Worldometer.
Nice, very similar 👍
Nice place to see but too many tourists... got to hit some smaller places. Chock a block with foreigners on trips is no good.
That's Chiang Mai life, tourists city. Easy to get away from tourists in the North 👍
Why does the Thai gov not step in and put a stop to it. Seeing it effects everyone's health
Not so easy...growing food (one is corn) wanting more than 1 harvest, so they burn all leftovers and grow more..long list of people wanting to earn more..would ve good if they could sort it out. Each year same thing.
Liki sissi mentioned, it's not so easy, years and years of tradition . Hopefully one day they can sort it.
It appears farmers need new equipment to get rid of the corn and sugarcane stubs without burning them...and no government program for purchasing new machinery !
I was looking at the burn map for Thailand. There were so many fires made me think Thai people were trying to make a fool out of the new prime minister by ignoring his concerns about smoke pollution. Reminds me of "Let's go Brandon" in America.
🤣 Yes, the burn map is going crazy at the minute.
Doesn’t the driving licence get you in free mate?
I didn't try it today mate. It didn't enter my head for 30 Baht. It felt ok today, and i was happy with it. That's rare for me aswell 🤣
Looks pretty bad. As you allude to, if you're just on a short holiday i doubt there's a serious health impact, but if you are staying long term it adds up.
It was really bad on this day, it did improver a lot in the last few days though.
Get out of there wayne ... save ya lungs dude
Something up my sleeve buddy 👍
The burning season is literally taking yrs off your life, but even having resources to leave for 3 months, you STAY there????
Who knows , maybe I won't 😉. Not everyone can leave buddy.
It's no way as bad as your making out.. at a distance it might look bad but in actual fact it's sunny with blue sky down in CM.. 😊
It's pretty bad, still going to get worse. Just because you can see some blue sky walking around the city, don't mean it's great . Cheers 🍻
it gets worse every year excerbated by more car ownership
It's not been too bad over the covid years. Last year was bad.
