Fun fact: when they filmed the speech scene, they had lots of visitors coming in to the BBC to look at all the different productions going on. Including the American ambassador! When he ended the scene, they all applauded him on set.

“On the day I remember it was very, because you do it all daylong, it’s quite challenging. Also, it was the day when the American Ambassador visited! [Laughs] For some reason there was so many visitors on set and they’re all gathered around a monitor to watch this. It was really sweet because I then heard a huge round of applause going up and it was all them they weren’t use to the workdays of a television set and didn’t realise it wasn’t a theatre. [Laughs] They were very sweet, they were very nice visitors.”
There's a reason that you can say "the speech" in reference to Capaldi's time as the Doctor, and everyone knows you mean this one. It's the finest performance anyone's ever given as the Doctor, and the greatest encapsulation of the character the show has ever given us. This is who the Doctor is at his core. The moment youve chosen for the still image for your discussion at the end - you can see all two thousand years of the character's life, his weariness, his unending compassion, all of it. A phenomenal piece of acting and ferociously relevant dialogue creating a truly extraordinary scene.

I prefer a later speech, personally. I think that scene is the definitive moment for the show as a whole. You probably know which one I mean.

The close up of Capaldi's face at 7:58 is possibly my favourite close up of any face ever. He tells the entire story with a single expression.

Heaven Sent when he looks at the portrait near the beginning is even better, imo. Such fantastic subtle face acting.
One of the best speeches in all of who. In one of the few times I don’t mind telling over showing. Capaldi is Brilliant.
That's the thing, it's more of a 'show' than it first appears because it relies on the actor carrying the speech. It relies on their capabilities to express everything with one expression and boy did Capaldi deliver.
When Mr Capaldi, does the speech and says ' I mean that most sincerely folks ' it goes back to a 70s talent show host from I T V television named Hughie Green , from his show Opportunity Knocks, it was his catch phrase, Mr Capaldi does an impression of Hughie Green,. Great reaction
And Hughie Green was Canadian. But understandably people think he's doing an American accent.
I think about Capaldi's speech in this episode all the time, even years later.
The truest mark of a transcendent moment of fiction.
There are a lot of great speeches in Doctor Who, but this one is just on a different level. I don't think any actor could have done this better. There are just no words to describe it.
One of the greatest speeches in not just Who, but television history. And Peter’s acting and delivery… it’s perfection. I still remember when this aired so clearly. “SIT DOWN AND TALK!” was the exact moment he became my Doctor. Capaldi just brings it in a way that otherwise cannot be brought.
12's speech here is quite possibly the most epic and beautiful speech in all of Doctor Who, and that's saying something. I get chills every time.
Something that took me several re-watches to notice is that the Doctor said he was going to fix Osgood's glasses. You think he's going to sonically weld them together or something, but all he did was put tape on it!

The speech is incredible, Capaldi absoloutly kills it. and as you said Jenna Colemen was outstanding in this too. Its hard not to be fully convinced that there's 2 seperate actors for Bonnie and Clara.

One of the best speeches of all time from the show. You feel the emotion from Capaldi's performance, his facial expression during the whole speech is incredible.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard he did the whole speech in one take. That show's the caliber of Capaldi as an actor, he's no doubt the best actor to play The Doctor.

this is STILL a favourite of mine and 12th is among my top 5 favourite doctors. But what makes this so remarkable is Capaldi did this in ONE take, word perfect first time. Not even my beloved 4th could do this. He's not old enough. This is called THE speech for a reason, one of the greatest speeches, not only in dr who, but television history!!
there aren't enough words to accurately describe how good of a performance this was, from Capaldi and From Coleman. The interplay between 12 and Nigella was so good. And it can be used to showcase a microcosm of war, which 12 does very well to describe. It still hits home even aftger all these years, it still feels so intense and you can see he's desperately trying to stop soemthing terrible from happening, all the while knowing the boxes were infact, empty.
All in all, this is one of my favourite speeches and episodes.
Yeah this has one of the best and most iconic moments in the whole show for sure, and it's not an uncommon thing to say he's the best actor to play the Doctor after seeing this which I totally agree with (and it is a hard contest, they're all "wonderful chaps" as Brig said). Also Jenna Coleman is one of the best companion actors too, so the both of them together bring such strong performances that just pull you in and demand your attention and they work so well together. A great speech, always relevant but particularly relevant with what's happening right now (though obviously it would be naive to think such a thing can be settled with a speech, but the line "until everybody does what they were all gonna have to do from the very beginning: sit down and talk" is very poignant and something you just wish people would realise).
And that speech is when i went from 90% sure he the best doctor to 100% sure.
this is peak doctor right here. you get everything that makes the doctor who he is: exasperation of the stupidity of those around him, the endless hope that people can change, the mercilessness of his anger, the gentleness of his compassion, his understanding that war is nesscary at times and how utterly foolish it is at others, the pain of having done horrible things in war and his desire to see that no one has to do what he did.
this moment and a ep coming up make 12 my all time favorite doctor.

The entire speech felt more like intimate theatre than normal Doctor Who blaring soundtrack space opera. We were so lucky that Capaldi was cast as the Doctor.

We as fans of Doctor Who should be so appreciative of the actors we have gotten to play the Doctor, we are SO lucky to have truly never had a terrible performance. But Capaldi is on another level, he makes me truly believe he is 2000 years old, and has had all these other faces. Doctor Who is so lucky to have had him.
Capaldi is freaking incredible. This speech never ceases to make me cry, give me chills, and shake me to my core. It's absolutely unbelievable. One of the best scenes in anything ever.

The line where the Doctor says "I did this on a very important day for me" is always glossed over as so insignificant.....it means more than people realise. He still marks that day....The Doctor, in the old barn house....with a big red button
I still remember watching this moment, so good, so many chills .... and suddenly my then-14 year old daughter said: "Move over Tennant, Capaldi is now 'my' Doctor" and me and her older sisters felt so proud.
And he did it all in one take! Peter and David Tennant are both my Doctors although my first Doctor was THE first Doctor, William Hartnell and then, like many of my generation, he became Tom Baker. But this is beyond anything that went before or came after, perhaps because, as you say, Peter has the gravitas and seniority of experience. I don't think it would have sounded the same from a young Doctor. Good, yes, but not as great. And to think he didn't win an award for it! Just like "Heaven Sent".

Really one of the best speeches in all of television! Definitely the best speech in doctor who.
I agree Peter is the best actor to have portrayed the Doctor. I would add that Jenna Coleman is the best actress to have played a companion. I could have watched 20 seasons of them acting and bouncing off each other.
Honestly, whatever we think of some of the scripts, Capaldi and Coleman are a fantastic acting duo. There is so much expression in their delivery and interactions. That 10min scene i feel like I'm in a theatre watching a great actor make me feel the whole crux and emotional heart of a story through sheer speech.
Youre absolutely right I told the exact same thing to a friend of mine you can have youre favourite doctor and that is different for everybody but the best actor is capaldi I totally agree with you every doctor was a great actor but this was different😍 it was this moment that made him my favourite doctor and it is not even my favourite capaldi episode but the speech is crazy and the acting behind it is just mindblowing
I've said it to others but the speech is on par with Anton Walbrook's speech in the Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (one of Martin Scorsese's most cherished films). It's on TH-cam.
I've always found the speech to be a bit of a reflection of one of Shakespeare's soliloquies. Perhaps Marc Antony in Julius Caesar. Except instead of "Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war!", the Doctor is calling for forgiveness.
I was also a little let down by part one. But part two… oh my. That speech. Incredible. I agree with everything you said about it. And I don’t think any of the other doctors could have done this as well as Capaldi. It’s just amazing. I absolutely agree that Capaldi is the best actor to play the doctor. And we’ve had some excellent ones.
And for the record I’m much older than you. Tom Baker was my first doctor.
This episode, Peter Capaldi became my favorite Doctor Who.
One of the greatest speeches in Who. Perhaps even the greatest, and so magnificently delivered. It's something I feel that even people who haven't watched DW could see and be moved by. Completely agree with what you say about Capaldi. It's in his portrayal of this character who has lived so long, shaped so many events and the massive complexities that come with it all, is one which I truly feel embodies the growth of the character into who the Doctor is today. And while part of the credit goes to the writing, it's Capaldi who makes the magic happen. His performance just has its way of holding your attention...and it's going to keep happening right down to the very end 😭 I won't be surprised if you give him a standing ovation upon his exit (but let's not get there now...)

I usually prefer the first of the two parters as well. But this one sticks the landing. Until recently I had only watched Capaldi’s era once, when it first aired. I rewatched it recently with fresh eyes and I really get what you say here. Capaldi is now my Doctor ❤ And Jenna is amazing with Capaldi. Their on-screen chemistry is perfect. It shines out of them and it’s a joy to watch.
Clara only THOUGHT it was just 5 minutes. With all of the memory wiping that went on before they hot it right, it was probably a month.
everytime i watch this, i’m reminded that this is the best lead cast of the entire show. peter capaldi and jenna coleman. obviously capaldi steals the show and has one of the best performances of the show, but jenna’s facial performance is also incredible. we got lucky with these two together.

Capaldi is the GOAT.
It's not my favourite episode or even my favourite moment, but it's certainly hard to imagine anyone other than Capaldi delivering that speech with the same intensity, weight of history, or depth of emotion. And that's not a dig at the other Doctors, just to say that this particular speech goes with that particular visage extremely well.
It's also extremely risky to hinge the denouement entire two parter on one very stage-y speech. If we compare and contrast with both the Pertwee and Smith Silurian stories, which are also about ending conflict and sharing territory, I'd argue this places far greater emphasis on the lead's ability to pull off a monologue, without relying on cutting to other characters and action.

I don't think people understand just how dark the line

We are talking about a war between two species for the control of a planet and the Doctor calls it a "funny little thing"

The 5 minutes felt like a month for the Doctor. It was too much for him thats what he meant
Matt Smith gets a bunch of great speeches. Capaldi gets THE great speech.
Pretty sure he said a month because he was also wiping her mind until he got the best ending
10:19 I think the Doctor just meant that the 5 minutes of thinking Clara was dead _felt_ like a month to him. It wasn't any deeper than that.
Minor spoiler: 9:14 "Clara Oswald [is] in my head. She doesn't leave" feels very different after the end of this season.
Decent speech, didn't like the game-show host parts they didn't work for me, but Capaldi is great nonetheless. Very weak story though, speech would have been more effective in a much stronger story
