    • @space1999

      The great intelligence was a classic Dr who baddie in 2 stories in the 60s with the 2nd doctor... both times it used the yeti (abominable snowmen) as its soldiers (they were robots) hence this story has "snowmen" as its soldiers... its set slightly before it met the 2nd doctor and this is alluded to with the London underground map highlighted in this story (the 2nd of the 60s stories was set in the London underground)... finally, around the time this story was being created there were rumours that someone discovered a copy of the second of the 60s stories (the underground one) in a long forgotten vault in Africa ( many old black and white stories were wiped by the bbc and so thought lost) and so there were rumours that the showrunner of new who, Steven moffat, knew it was soon going to be available and so commissioned this Xmas story to tie in with it.... ps, they did indeed find the lost show and its great!!

    "Jenna Louise" very briefly, she soon decided she preferred being Jenna! She's actually from my small-ish home town. Sadly I never met her before she moved away. Enjoy trying to solve the Clara mystery ahead of schedule - you've managed it to do it with pretty much every major plot thread so far!

    If I didn't know what an instant crush would look like, I do know now. It hit you hard. And even though I think Jenna plays an amazing Clara, it astounded me that, after knowing her for her role in Doctor Who, her role of Queen Victoria made me forget she actually played Clara. She's that good in it.
    Fun personal trivia, my daughter's husband's last name is Paternoster and when they have kids, they said they'll call themselves 'The Paternoster Gang' and I'm all for that.
    Another great reaction, good to see you recovered well from being under the weather.

    So lovely to hear Clara's theme again, it's been a while :') And hello Strax, everyone's favorite homicidal potato. This is a fun episode, much needed after the emotional rollercoaster last ep. The Tardis changing from the fun steampunky to the near sterile interior (still very cool!) to mirror the emptiness in the Doctor's heart(s) after saying goodbye to the Ponds left me feeling hollow too, and Clara's fiery energy definitely brought back the spirit in the show. 11 and Clara is a fun duo to watch, but for me 12 and Clara is even better.

    I totally agree that having the Victorian Clara as a companion would’ve been great. I believe the reason against it was that the companion is supposed to be our connection to the show/represent the viewer and so having a companion that needed contemporary things explained wouldn’t work. But I still think it would’ve been fun!

    • @AdamNisbett
      @AdamNisbett ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In the modern era that tends to be true, but in the Classic Who era there were multiple companions from past history, distant future, as well as non-humans so having a Victorian era companion would not be at all unprecedented.

      @JoyceReacts ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AdamNisbett for sure! If I remember correctly the need to have a contemporary companion was expressed by the show runners at the time, but think the interactions with non contemporary companions are top tier.

    Wanting Victorian Clara to be the full-time companion (12:21), and a Vastra/Jenny/Strax spinoff (14:56) are all fairly popular opinions in the Who fandom. At the parts of the fandom I've heard the most. Ditto for Jenna Coleman being incredibly adorable (4:10). But I generally agree!
    17:35 The Third Doctor was TARDIS-less and stuck in the 1970s for a while, but basing a modern Doctor in Victorian times would be very different. As you've seen on Patreon already, at least the outfit does stick around, albeit without the top hat.

    I love this episode! I still think A Christmas Carol is the best Christmas special, but this is probably the most fun one. There are lots of great moments but when Clara enters the Tardis and the "I Am the Doctor" theme kicks in it gives me chills. The chemistry between Matt and Jemma is fantastic, I really like the Victorian setting and the team of Vastra, Jenny and Strax are the icing on the cake. FYI - they are called the Paternoster Gang (as they live in Paternoster Row) and they have been a few audio series by Big Finish.

    @riverstardis8745 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Moffat has said that he did consider a spin off for the Paternoster Gang (Vastra, Jenny, and Strax) but decided against it because he was also writing Sherlock at the time so was pretty busy and the amount of prosthetics involved for Vastra and Strax would've made it quite expensive and given the actors very long days. Definitely check the audios out though!

    Knowing you're already ahead and safe from season 7 spoilers... Fun fact : Victorian!Clara was meant to be the companion (i can't remember in which interview Moffat said that seeing Jenna acting during 1st audition, he had that idea of echoes and asked her to try some of those characters ideas), that's why in the Bells of Saint John, it seems strange that Clara doesn't know about the internet and twitter... it'd have made so much more sense if the Victorian one didn't know about it.

    There's very few rules (lol) when it comes to making this show but one of them is that having a period-era Companion generally doesn't work. They found this out waaaay back in the 60's when the 1st Doctor picked up a very sweet girl from ancient Troy who then had to have every modern concept and norm explained to her by our dear Doctor. It gets tiring pretty quick and becomes a bit of a manic pixie dream girl situation even quicker....
    ... Which is a shame, because they're trying to avoid that (i think) with Clara but... She still _is_ kinda a manic pixie dream girl... But then, so are all the companions really (to various degrees.)
    It's just such a huge shame, because Jenna Coleman is a _stellar_ actor. She seems to be very sensible as a person (unlike Karen Gillian who was once described by Matt Smith as 'mad as a bag of cats.') At conventions she comes across as very put together; professional and stoic, and yet here in this show she is vastly different. Apparently at her audition Moffat et al were completely stunned, mouths agape watching this diminutive pocket rocket of a girl managing to keep up and even overrun Matt's frenetic pace. And her tiny little stature makes Matt suddenly seem like such an authority figure, just because of how imposing he has to be framed now lmao. With the Ponds they were all within a few inches of each other (I think Alex is the shortest.)
    But one of the upsides to this new framing of Matt's Doctor is 🤌that TARDIS scene.🤌I _love_ it. And weirdly, it's one of the scenes that really jumps out to me and reminds me that Matt 'is' the Doctor, even now so late in his run. It's a very old-fashioned TARDIS-meet-Companion-Companion-meet-TARDIS intro scene, and it's so great to see Matt get such a bombastic gravitas moment.
    And yes, there are some contrived moments here. And in fact imo, they continue with more frequency as we go on towards the end of certainly Matt's run, if not beyond. This is when BBC's Sherlock had become the juggernaut that it did, and so I think Moffat was stretched a bit thin and had quite burnt out by the time Sherlock finally wrapped up, if not before. But the first signs of his writing eeking out in quality due to time pressure and fatigue started on this show in this season.
    A huge shame, because although I personally don't really like a lot of what they did with the rest of Matt's run, Jenna's character, and the overall arc of how all of that plays out... They're playing with some really _really_ interesting concepts. I think there's just some holes in their working creative theory... It's frustrating because there's some really strong stuff here with some really strong performances, but when I watch it it makes my palms itch, just wanting to tweak a few moving pieces just 'here' and then 'there' to make it all come together into a more cohesive whole. Sometimes it almost seems like there were ideas, themes and motifs and resolutions that Moffat was getting close to, but would then have to abandon and turn away from in order to allow the show to continue. Knowing a bit about Classic Who, and knowing that _he_ knows even more about Classic Who, I can almost 'see' the ending he would have written for the show (and it's *amazing.)*
    And as for River Song, Moffat said really early on (I think when a fan asked him about her dating androids...) that she's a 51st Century woman. Her and a Doctor are kind of 'accidentally' monogamous at their best and completely avoidant of each other at their worst. Comes with the territory of being with someone who is in different stages of life from one day to the next, like a box of chocolates. 🤷Unless of course the Doctor didn't express any sentiment of 'hey i'm spoken for' for a _reason..._ But of course that's a discussion for a different event horizon...

    A Victorian companion would've been fun, but I think what would actually happen is once the time travel and space bit had been established, prior historical context gets way less relevant and all you're left with is a character who's harder to write dialogue for and slightly less relatable. It's not that the idea's bad, just that the current show's format wouldn't showcase it very satisfyingly. I'm not even sure Victorian Clara was written any different to Modern Clara either, we'd have just had her be as unsurprised and unflappable as she is later. "Smaller on the outside!"

    FILMBuFF welcome to my favourite era of New Who Clara Who.
    Clara is my favourite companion next to Rose.
    when I watched doctor who I never thought there could be an equal to Rose and then first episode of Jenna Colman, Clara is still my favourite companion (side by side with Rose) to this day.
    I think a lot of the viewers liked Victoria Clara better because she came first and because everyone thought that this was the Clara that was going to travel with the doctor.
    Modern Clara takes a little longer to get use to because she's like a blank canvas ready for the pant (emotions and personalities) to be panted upon however I do prefer modern Clara because her character blinds up as this series goes on were as Oswin/Victoria Clara there personality's are just given to the viewer straight away which is nice for a one off episode but when your blinding a character if you make them perfect to begin with there is no room for improvement.
    super duper excited for your next weeks reaction and happy that you like Clara already.

    It's one of those episodes that improves with a second look, but it is still a bit confused. I think its major problem is that the space taken up with foreshadowing detracts from the plot: The world ending menace of the Great Intelligence. It's quite hard to care about the fate of the world when the Doctor seems sidetracked by Clara and is barely responsible for foiling the plan. Probably would have been better as a two-parter, not a Christmas special, which would have also allowed a better paced progression from comedy to tragedy.
