This episode aired the weekend before the 2015 Paris Attacks, so this speech was bounded around the internet like fire in the week after.
The Doctor's speech is very potent and has been one of my favorite pieces in the series!

Capaldi was such a slow burn of a Doctor, one that snuck up on you until you suddenly realise how much you utterly adore him.
and how much he embodies the powerful timelord he is.
Clara being "dead" for 5 minutes felt like a month for him. Imagine how long it would feel if she stayed dead for like 4 billion years or something.
That was uncalled for and very very mean, but hilarious nonetheless

Ah I'd argue not that long because he kept creating new versions of himself that died over and over so this version only had to deal with the very last bit of it.

ALWAYS then" which for me means him remembering all the loops - because it's way more tragic that way so my head canon goes there (I like the Doctor suffering that way, let's not analyse what it must mean about me xd) . But the option of him remembering only the original and the latest loops works too so your argument stands.

I'm one of those people who think her character is undervalued. Sure, people get annoyed by the fact that she is once more "the most important girl in all of history" and all of that but unlike Donna or Amy she became this important due to her own actions not because something happened to her. Donna became important because she was somehow chosen to become Doctor-Donna or something, and Amy just happened to grew up next to the crack. Clara became special because she jumped into the Doctor's timestream on her own. And just like Rose she became very important to the Doctor, to help him understand who he is, to find back to the man he was before the Time War, because Capaldi wasn't sure about it anymore, just as Eccleston and Tennant had their doubts about themselves, something Smith never really had.

Kate Stewart's "Five rounds rapid" line is a callback to one of the most famous lines from her dad, the Brigadier, in the Classic Series.
...so famous that Nicholas Courtney, who played the Brigadier, used it as the title of his autobiography.
Did you spot another reference, the 'Sullivan gas'?. Undoubtedly a callback to Harry Sullivan, played by Ian Marter in the very first Zygon story in 1974, Terror of the Zygons.

Ah, it's finally here. *The* speech. This will always be the very best speech of the entire show. Capaldi is just incredible in this role.
Edit: Just to clear up, I personally love the The Doctor Falls speech even more. That one is my favourite, and is a big reason why it's my favourite story of all time along with World Enough and Time. I just feel that this speech is more iconic and will be remembered more, which is a kinda sad but it's true.

George Linford i think World enough and time is sometimes forgotten about how good it was because it precedes the doctor falls, somebody watching that without knowing Simm is about to reappear would have the most fun time
What makes the “speech” so emotional to me is the moment when the Doctor turns away and has to gather himself for a second. Very emotional moment.
You take that speech and drop it into The West Wing and people would throw Emmys at Capaldi. Really a bummer that he wasn’t recognized for this.
Personally, I think that's one hell of a monolog...

It’s what i love about this scene is that even though the doctor Saved Gallifrey the time war still happened and he fought in that war and that will never changed

Capaldi has two amazing speeches during his run, that not only defined his doctor, but the character as a whole.
I would say he has more than that, I can think of two from this season and two from next season. Heck three from next season actually.
The Doctor's speech about war and mindless violence in general was really fitting for the time it aired, I remember when this episode came out it was a few days after the Paris terrorist attacks. It made it a really potent speech for me

Correction: it was broadcast a few days BEFORE the attacks. If anything, I think that makes the speech even more poignant (also it was the day before Remembrance Sunday)

Shout out for Jenna Coleman's performance, 12's speech needed a great partner and her acting in the dual roles helped to elevate it into the stratosphere.

This isn't Capaldi's best episode by any measurement, its a great one but not the best. But for that speech alone it is the greatest moment in his tenure. Capaldi well and truly cemented himself as a legendary Doctor with this performance and I think in years to come people will look back on him as one of the most underappreciated periods of the show for performances like this

The Sound Disciples heaven sent, world enough and time, the doctor falls. God Capaldi was unfortunate to have some pretty dull episodes but when he caught a good one he made a classic
@@keirlamont2806 yeah, when his episodes were bad they were *really* bad (Kill the Moon, Sleep No More), but when they were great, they were phenomenal.
Exactly- the two parter itself is mediocre at best, but the anti-war speech is what saves it and elevates it to the point of rewatchability.
IO TG this two parter frustrated me. It had so many promising elements and ideas and I don’t think it ever managed to get them all working together
I think the best part about the Doctor's speech was the dull humming in the background. No epic music, no sad tune, just an ongoing, dull hum. It really amplifies what the Doctor is saying, giving you a sense that this is serious. There's no room for music to take the spotlight, because his words are something that everyone needs to hear, words you can afford to get distracted from. That's why I love that scene.
Damn, there will never ever be another Doctor better than this one.

That monologue man... I’ve watched it so many times; I was straight up mouthing along to the lines while I was watching this. What I would give to be able to act like Peter Capaldi... apparently after the director cut the whole studio burst into applause - some people were even crying! He will forever be my greatest inspiration and the best Doctor x
At that moment Capaldi was every doctor from his past. Every single one. He is considered one of the best Doctors

this one scene cemented capaldi as one of the greatest doctors of all time, up there with tennet, smith, baker and Mccoy. it encompasses everything that makes him who he is: his willingness to protect the innocent, his endless wrath, his infinite compassion, his sense of humor and the pain of war. 12 may have had a rough start but right here, he truly became the doctor.
In any other season, this would be the highlight, in this season not even close.

That speech gives me so many chills and makes my cry every single time. As much as I love all of the other speeches this one is by far the best in the entire show.

Watching this randomly I just realized that the boxes look like the box he had to activate to end the Time War and destroy Gallifrey. The Doctor gave humanity a version of "his mistake" and has "tested" them several times to see what they would do. Ironically, the hopefull note (despite all of it) at the end of the day, is that he says that every time, he managed to help humanity not press the button. Every time, he's fixed a little bit of his own mistake (or what he's thought to be a mistake for a very long time), and maybe one day, he'll have saved as many people as the ones who died on Gallifrey.
This episode made 12 my favourite Doctor. That speech man!!
This may be the Doctor’s best, most characteristicly telling speech of the entire (including Classic Who) show.
Hi FW34, the Dr.`s impersonation of a game-show host, was of a real person in the U.K.. His name was Hughie Green, he had duel nationality, British & Canadian. He was most well-known for what was I think, the 1st talent show over here, called Opportunity Knocks. His catchphrase mentioned by the Dr., was "I mean that most Sincerely, folks" I remember watching his show & several future stars succeeded on it. The mention of the gas, was a callback to the Classic Who story, as the inventor named was a companion involved in it.
Little known fact but Capaldi has won an Oscar, not for acting but for writing, but still. Shows how good of an artist he is.
He actually won it for directing. His short film " Franz Kafka's It's a wonderful life" won the oscar for the best short film.

Also, Peter himself has said that he won it for "directing" a short film, and he's always referred to as an oscar winning director.

However, it used to be producers for the first 5 decades it was awarded. However, in situations where the director, the producer and the writer of the film are all seperate, traditionally the producer and the director get nominated because they have a more crucial role in actually bringing the whole thing together.
If you look at the people who get nominated for best films, you'll find that very rarely does a writer who is not also the director or the producer of the film, get nominated.

One of the best speeches in the entire show
That speech was what 150% made him grow on me as one of my favorites.
Took us all a while, but I feel like we all ended up loving Peter's representation of The Doctor, after that episode.
I’d dropped off of DW somewhere in his first season. I didn’t dislike him, just kinda fell off in general from watching. Cut to years later and I see that speech in a clip…he is easily my favorite Doctor now. (Nothing against any others of course)
5 rounds rapid... didn't realise it the first time, but that's actually a Classic Who reference to the Brigadier, AND is also a tv trope apparently; in reference to the uselessness of small firearms against aliens/monsters/whatever else.

This is one of my hands-down favorite episodes. That monologue was absolute top tier. And as great as it was, it's arguably not even the most emotionally powerful moment of the season. I mean, holy cow the writing in Season 9 is incomprehensibly good.
For sure, i'm suprised how many people dislike Series 9
And mad props to Gibbzee, this was one of the best editing jobs on a DW reaction I can remember. The different Claras, "This is a Mug", etc.

The speech in this episode really struck a chord with me, especially the bit about "hold onto the pain, hold it tight until it burns and tell yourself no-one else has to feel like this!" That is such a philosophy I have in my own life because of having been hurt so many times by other people.
I first saw this episode a couple of days after bombs went off in Brussels Airport, about 20-25 miles from where I live, and that monologue really helped me past the anger and the fear. It was, in fact, the very first time I truly accepted Capaldi as the Doctor, and I will always treasure this episode because of it.

Without a doubt the best speech, there are some really, really great ones in this show, but this one just hits so hard, not just because of Capaldi's passionate delivery, but especially with how the world is like in these times. Every time a new shitty, hateful thing happens, my mind flashes immediately to this speech, because it rings true, every single time.

That was indeed a very epic speech, and I remember being absolutely punched in the feels when I first watched this episode. Peter Capaldi just nailed it. Still gets me emotional.
The Doctor keeps calling Bonnie Zygella, it’s a reference to Nigella. A famous chef here in the UK who doesn’t really do much other than whisk suggestively and make innuendos for all the middle aged fathers at home
Or as Dara O'Briain puts it - "Somethin' fer the dads!"

This two parter is what I recommend someone to watch if they have never seen any Dr. Who previously. Peter Capaldi doing some of his finest work.
One more thing. Even when his tonge fails, in just a couple of moments, it`s still perfect. I have to thank the editors for keeping those moments. They gave it more realism...

I love how, just after they escaped the plane, the Doctor says he'll fix Osgood's glasses. All he did was wrap the middle with tape!

For me, this was the episode where 12 became the doctor, like I fully accepted and began to love him. Such an incredible episode!

The story I heard on this is that monologue was done in one take only. He nailed it the first time. I don't know for certain if that's true, but I hope so. He's incredible.
Kate's comment about how she dealt with the "sheriff" in Truth or Consequences, was a call back to Classic Who's the Daemons. In it, there was a stone gargoyle that was being controlled by the Master, which could vaporize people. The Brigadier ordered one of his men to fire upon it with the line, "Chap with wings, five rounds rapid," considered one of the best lines in Classic Who, due in no small part to the delivery given by the late Nicholas Courtney.
Capaldi's speeches is my most favorite speech and it's what put him as my favorite doctor

I'm not a huge fan of the writing of the speech itself but damn Peter's acting in this speech is probably one of the best pieces of TV out there. I truly can't think of other monologues that made me cry on its own without precipitating events. Capaldi is sooo legendary

Except that never happened, but there are still more screams than he is able to count. He did not destroy Gallifrey but he still fought the timewar for a very long time.
I come back to that speech frequently. It's a defining moment in Capaldi's run, and possibly the best speech ever made on the show. This is also one of the reasons 12 is my favorite.

This Peter Capaldi speech is even more powerful without the backing music, and that version exists if you look for it on TH-cam.
That was a masterclass from Peter Capaldi (who became MY Doctor...). When he says "...When I close my eyes!..." you can feel the pain (I read that the actres who played Osgood couldn`t do nothing but cry her eyes off there in the back). But all the story was great.
....And not forgetting he did that speech in one take too!
