Leopard killing Jackal pup

  • We were on our morning game drive when we spotted this female leopard walking through the bushes. We observed & followed her for almost an hour as she kept stopping and looking around for some prey. At one point, as she walked past our vehicle, she suddenly positioned herself in the stalking mode and sat down right next to our vehicle. This is when we realised that she'd seen (or probably heard) a Jackal pup behind our vehicle. This pup was from a litter of 3 pups which we'd spotted the previous evening in a den nearby, their mom was not seen anywhere nearby. This one pup seemed to have lost it's way outside the den this morning and happened to get spotted by this leopard who was in search of prey. The rest can be seen in the video below.

1:48. very interesting that it leaped prior to taking off. It's like shaving off a split second prior to the jackal noticing and reacting. It not only it shorten the distance that it must chase, the leap allowed it to hit the ground already accelerated and allowed to reach top sprint much quicker.

You have got a great shot and its rare sight. The leopard and the tiger are the only two big cats that removes the hair of animals before eating it. This has been captured very well. Continue the good work. We filmed two tigers fighting for a kill. The growls of the tigers were insane. Lucky to capture it for our channel. The video we filmed shows how ferocious these big cats are.

Leopards know humans are superior to animals? No, they don't at all. Infact, nearly all animals don't come to the conclusion that humans are superior to all animals because they aren't able to process it. The wildlife in general ignore the people because they're on a jeep. Jeeps emit the gas smell telling the animals that they aren't food, plus the fact that the jeep is big. If people were photographing lions on foot, the lions would come after them.

For some people in this comment section who don't know what they're talking about :
    1. Baby animals being eaten is very common thing. Even leopard cubs can meet the same fate as this jackal pup. We can't be sure if this jackal pup can survive even if the car's not there, considering the mom isn't around.
    2. In African safari you can ride on open safari vehicles safely even with predators around. As long as you remain on the vehicle, predators will ignore you. It's the big herbivore such as elephants and buffaloes that you should worry about, not the carnivores.

This is very close to the "action". If your vehicle just happened to be where it was when this occurred, fine. But I'm seeing a lot of footage that suggests some tour operators are taking people very close, invasively close to apex predators.
When you consider the immense damage people have done (and sadly still do) to lion, leopard and cheetah populations, it's crucial we do all we can to redress the balance. No killing is the first and major step. Severe punishment of those who do kill is also very important. Outside of direct harm is the preservation of their natural habitat.
I mentioned the big cats specifically here, but there are plenty of other species whose conservation status ranges from vulnerable to critically endangered. Our attitudes, individually and collectively, need to change with regard to the way we view wild animals. Part of that change has to come from the way these animals are presented to us in media. It's not something people think to discuss, but I've noticed a real issue in the packaging of zoological/natural history programs. It's a whole other comment, really, but in short, over-dramatizing 'content' with portentous underscoring and action movie trailer narration sells the 'product' short. Similarly, anthropomorphizing animals and the dynamics between animals actually serves, inadvertently, a negative purpose.
