This unbelievable sighting was captured by 30-year-old, Wildlife photographer and owner of Escape Safari Co, Don Heyneke and by safari consultant Rustom Framjee, founder of Safarinut, while on safari in Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Masai Mara, Kenya.

Don tells LatestSightings.com the story: “A female giraffe gave birth to a baby calf. 30 minutes after being born, the giraffes are already able to walk with only minimal stumbling and, within 10 hours, they are able to run. Unfortunately for this young calf, a hungry lioness and hyena showed interest in the calf right after it was born.”
“The interested lioness and hyena were trailing the giraffe and her calf, but the hyenas quickly lost interest, leaving only the lioness who was almost herding the herd for over 6kms (4 miles). The newborn calf was knocked over several times by its mother while trying to escape the lioness.”
“After walking 6kms, the giraffe and her baby, who at this point had not even had a sip of milk in its life yet, reach a dead-end caused by a riverbed. The lioness creeps up to them, thinking this is the finale to an already intense series.”
“The mother tried to protect her calf from the lioness and panicked - accidentally bumping the new-born down a cliff. The new-born calf was now stuck in the riverbed, the mother went outside the riverbed and tried to coax the young calf out but it was too weak to climb the bank.”
“The calf lay down and at this point stood no chance against the apex predator who took the opportunity to grab the calf and carry it towards the water.”
“The mother did her best to protect her new-born calf and chased the lioness away multiple times and at this point, we thought the calf was 100% dead. To everyone’s surprise, it stood up but not for very long as the calf ended up finding safety in the river where it fell asleep from exhaustion. The baby giraffe, with a fight for survival like no one has ever seen before, drowned.”

Onlly less than one day old, it ran and walked 4 miles WITHOUT WATER OR MILK, survived lion bites to the neck, a drop down a cliff, and knew to have refuge in a river, having no knowledge of this new world and body it was in. He/she was highly intelligent and resilient, an alpha giraffe indeed. You wont be forgotten little girl/guy. RIP.

The fighting spirit of this baby is beyond words. Being born into this harsh world, having never even experienced the milk of her mother, quenching her thirst with some water, or having any food, this courageous animal gets up with it's legs shaking after a brutal attack by a lion, and continued to fight on for over 7 hours. What an absolute warrior.

The absolute tenacity of this baby giraffe is nothing but amazing. It survived a harsh lioness attack, afterwards manages to walk a long time with severe wounds and escape, only to survive for 7 more hours while in relatively deep water and holding on to all high strength AS A NEWBORN. Incredible.

One of the most emotional, sad and deep nature footage I have ever seen in my life... The baby getting unexpectingly back on his feet despite being badly wounded to the head due to the lioness bites, his willingness to hold on to his short life pictured by his irregular steps, then this final scene as tired, wounded, seemingly abandonned by his once protective mother, the baby began slowly to drown under a heavy rain. Even the weather played its part while at first the sun shined on a healthy, galloping calf surrounded by a protective herd before turning into rain while the baby's fate was sealed. This footage deserves to get an award...Masterpiece.

Wow I was shocked when the baby stood up and walked away after the lion attack, I'm just curious as to why the mother didn't help the baby once it got up and started stumbling around.
Mother knew it was too weak and that the baby wasn’t gonna last long .
She knew it was critically wounded by it's walking and knew it's time would be short, and it was.
Looks like the mother came back a few times to shoo the lion away....and then walked off again. @@williestarke
After the mothers adrenaline faded it recognised the baby was sick so abandoned it.
i I feel very sorry for the mother and baby. I'm sure she tried her best to protect her baby but she had just given birth and was probably very weak and wasn't able to do anything different. I would like to know what happened to the mother, if she lived or got attacked herself. I hope she made it safely and met a group of other giraffes to get with for her safety. If she survived, she will grieve the loss of her little one so, please don't talk bad about the mother.

So devastating and sad. I was hoping the little giraffe would be reunited with its mother instead of drowning like that. It tried to get out of the water. It tried so hard. My heart broke for this little creature.
They're natural prey animals. It's fine. Also sad for the lion. An animal expended energy and risked injury just to be able to feed itself and possibly its babies.
Giraffe are pretty useless as protectors. If the herd had stood with them, like elephants do, it would have survived.

That was one of the most heartbreaking, crestfallen, and melancholic ending experiences of predator and prey I’ve witnessed. To see the baby succumb to drowning simply hit so much harder then any other manner, much more so then the brutality we’re used to seeing. I was truly speechless at what I was seeing.
Just few hours being born without a taste of milk, food or opportunity, chased and attacked to bleed by a predator, later abandoned by its mother and about half a day worth of experiencing everything, the baby still wanted to feel life by constantly trying it's best to keep head high and breathe.
This is truly inspiring🙏🙏
Ironic...When it's a newborn animal we root for its survival. When it's a human baby, we defer to the mother and doctor to decide whether the baby gets to live or die. Certainly humankind is the most ferocious animal on the planet.

Cows kind shows the same behaviour in the milk industry when their calf is taking away from them after birth. Stress and grief. its a bit concerning thinking about it. I think it makes the thought difficult of drinking the milk myself

Sad footage indeed. Heartbreaking to see the giraffe struggle till the end. But dint quite understand as to why the mother giraffe deserted the baby after it got to its feet again...after protecting it so much.

It was too injured to be able to survive for much longer, so there was no point in defending it.

Why was the mother useless towards the end when her baby showed it wanted to live. The mother seriously gave up whilst the baby kept going even after the mother just abandoned it. That’s even more sad to me being abandoned like that by your own Kin.
Because I think in the wild when babies are hurt or have problems they can’t keep up with the mother no more and the mother abdomens them it’s honestly no point if the animal is in bad condition .

Mother Giraffes are the worst protectors. They stay too close to the calf when trying to intimidate the predators with bluff kicks and usually end up disabling the calf themselves, which in turn makes the calf easy prey for the predators.

Yeah the mother fought so hard and kept protecting the baby which seemed dead at first but then when the baby got back up the mom left it? Like okay?
Not just giraffes. There are many many video examples of gnus, zebras, buffalo etc that in their haste to protect their baby will trample, kick and even gouge the little one. And what is worse is the parent only adds to the pain and suffering of its baby when there is really no way, for example, a mother wildebeest is going to be able to protect its offspring from a full grown lion, or more lions. Nature is not pretty and is heartbreaking to watch, but then you need to look at it in context. One animal, young or old dies and the animals that eat it get to survive. As well as the a animals that were not attacked live longer to breed to make more of themselves and some will be food and on and on just like it has been for millennia.

Ran for miles, then ran with this mother, then fell into a ditch, dragged for a while then got up and hobbled to the water, stuck in the mud, using every ounce of energy it had left. The look on the calf's face was the picture of "spent" 6:02
Edit: I'm not one to interfere with nature, but I wish I could have picked it up and got it medical attention, food, sleep and love.

Incredible fight from the mom to protect the calf. Giraffes actually have one of the longest pregnancies at around 15 months so it’s a big investment to protect!

That’s one tough little guy and we can learn from him you are never out of the fight.
Cruel and heart-wrenching as it, this is all a part of nature. Only a percentage of any wild mammals offspring survives infancy. That includes the predators. In this case, the giraffe mother seems a little inexperienced in protecting her calf. It's hard to tell if the sequence of the film is in the right order but at one point they were amongst a herd but then got separated from it. Even if it managed to get out of the water and reunite with its mother, it was only a matter of time before the lion or hyenas got it. The mother will rear other offspring and will be wiser and more forceful for the experience. It all seems very harsh but it ultimately leads to the herd being stronger in the long run.
That's dedication on the filming of that shot. 👏 Through the storm and 7 hrs later still there with a camera getting the final minutes.

Hard to say, maybe she didn't give a shit. Elephants do a much better job to protect their kids, they are close to adults. Here multiple times she just left that calf and did barely anything.
It looked dead already before the lion got it. I couldn't see the ribs going up and down breathing

Just shows how resilient these animals have to be. Even though it ultimately drowned, likely due to sheer exhaustion and blood loss, it still survived the initial attack and got away into the water. I just hope something was able to eat the calf once it did die.

Well if it wasn't scavenged it'd be broken down by tiny animals and bacteria in the water, which all ultimately returns to the land and back into plants. Nothing goes to waste in nature.

The only thing I can think of is she left knowing her calf was a goner. She probably didn’t think her calf would get up. Why stay around, in case, then she will be attacked thinking possibly more lions are near by. Sad I know, but that is nature.

This was an epic tale! Both the mother and the lioness were so persistant. I was STUNNED when the baby got up and started walking again. So sad to see it passing out in the water....and the lion was still waiting...
