    Amazing footage of leopard catching, playing with and then killing impala in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in South Africa
    The Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve shares a 50km unfenced border with the Kruger National Park this private reserve is second to none in terms of wildlife encounters. Due to the high degree of habituation the reserve offers outstanding photographic opportunities, particularly of the elusive leopard. The valuable water source supplied by the Sabie and Sand rivers ensure that this diverse land sustains one of the highest concentrations of animal species to be found anywhere in Africa.
    Wildlife highlights: Leopard, lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, antelope, avifauna

    We have a cat. The cat sometimes “hunts” bugs, moths, beetles. And the resemblance in the behavior of our cat and this leopard is truly uncanny! They do the same things: periodically tap the prey with the paw, let go and then catch, hold it by the paw and look around as if to make sure no one is going to take it from them, put the prey in the mouth and then let it go, except our cat fits the bugs in the mouth completely unlike the leopard. Clearly the behavior is “programmed “ in their genes.

    All cats have quick reflexes but I think the leopard is about as close to zero reaction time as a nonfiction creature can get. Even a baby gazelle is probably faster than you think but every time the little one here tries to move the leopard is there in an instant to block the escape.

      An impala would never EVER come back to save its baby from the jaws of death, they'll simply run away and leave their baby to either die or miraculously escape. An impala's body is built for speed, not fighting. A healthy, full-grown impala will never risk its own life even to save its baby. An elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, Zebra, or water buffalo would, but an impala, gazelle, or any other skinny, sleek-framed animal in the order "Artiodactyla" would not. The bigger ones that I mentioned before might try to save their baby IF they think it's worth it.

    What makes me sad is not the footage but the people in the comments blaming the leopard, as if it was evil or bad, and saying that they should kill it or whatever. Listen people, animals cannot be bad or evil. It is just the way it is so don’t anthropomorphize animals. The leopard has to eat just as the impala and has every right to live. This footage is just a very interesting behaviour, not an act of evil.

    • @NinjaKittyBonks
      @NinjaKittyBonks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@jorgesobrino_y ... you are 100% correct!
      .
      While it is difficult on human sensibilities to see such behavior, this is just nature playing itself out. The leopard behavior is not at ALL unlike that of my domestic house cat and most certainly where her instincts originate. There is an abundance of impala for the VERY specific reason of sustaining the leopard population. Should the nature of this balance stray too far in either direction, it will be corrected over time.
      .
      The leopard is definitely not evil, it is doing what nature intended it to do.... not only survive, but hone its skills to ensure that survival.

    • @NinjaKittyBonks
      @NinjaKittyBonks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@stickygrenade ... which is why the leopard is NOT evil... it is following its nature, just as the impala. The one fundamental difference humans have from pretty much ALL other species of life, is we will nearly _always_ adjust our surroundings, based on social influences. We have TV, music, technology and those who are famous creating influence and we go outside of our "nature". The leopard and impala have no such influence, except that which humans may force upon them (encroaching on their habitat and such). Both of these creatures are just doing what is 100% natural and we have no right to pass judgement on it being right or wrong.... it just "is".

    • @jorgesobrino_y
      @jorgesobrino_y 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stickygrenade yes, I agree with you, if it was a matter of life or death of a human being, even if I didn't know him or her, and I had a gun in my hands (which I wouldnt cause I hate guns) I would shoot the leopard because Im not a crazy animal advocate that would rather save an animal than a human. However, let me put another example. You find a non poisonous snake behind some boxes in your house. It bites you because you didn't know it was there. A lot of people would automatically feel like revenging and would kill the snake because it bit them. That's how people work. I personally wouldnt because I understand that the snake is not evil, it was just protecting itself. You get my point right?

      @@jorgesobrino_y ... well said!
      .
      It is funny.... we humans have ZERO issue killing certain critters, just for the most miniscule offenses. If a fly is buzzing around, I kill it without a moments hesitation, because it is "there". It is just flying around, but pestering the crap out of me, so I deem capital punishment is necessary. Now, if the fly was slow and non-evasive, I would catch it in a glass and let it go outside, because it is just doing what flies do! I will capture spiders in a glass and let them go outside, if it is convenient. If they are walking around in the shower pan, I get them wet and wash them down the drain, so I am not very consistent.
      .
      Where humans have the difficulty, generally, is if they can "relate" to the creature. We have dogs and cats as pets, but eat cows for food without hesitation. In Korea, I believe it is, dogs and or cats are often eaten just as we do cows and they are sacred in India. We in the USA are absolutely APPALLED by the thought of eating a cat or dog and get outraged at the consideration of it.
      .
      This all comes down to how a society views different creatures and over time, such views are subject to change.

    The reason why most cats, big and small, seem to play with their prey is because they don’t want to risk getting hurt or tired while the prey attempts to run or defend itself. They wear them down until they’re tired, which can be seen in the video where the impala calf gradually grows more exhausted. The only cat I can think of that doesn’t often play with its prey are lions, and that’s because they hunt in groups to easily bring down prey that would otherwise be exhausting for solitary hunters. We humans did the same thing, putting endurance over speed and tracking prey over the course of days until the animal is too exhausted from lack of rest and unable to fight back.

      @@TotallyNoCat predators as large as the big cats expend incredible amounts of energy as well as placing themselves at risk when taking on larger prey. There is also the need to balance daily caloric needs with exposing themselves to the risk of sustaining an injury that will no longer permit them to survive. They instinctively understand and are driven by those needs. Especially true with the Leopard since it lives and hunts alone unlike the other large terrestrial predators in Africa that will hunt and live in groups, packs, or prides. This isnt my discovery or my channeling the Leopards inner most thoughts. Its kind of well known due to hundreds of years of study and observation

    He's using the baby as bait to catch a larger meal and he ends up giving up and eating it instead. He captured it and he's displaying it to the other impalas. Then he's hoping that the fawn's parents intervene so he can pick one off.
    If you're wondering why the baby doesn't run away, it's in shock and exhausted from already trying.

      But I am sure my cat did love mice. Once I set both into the bath tube (because my cat always did hurt the mouse when catching it again) and my cat was so happy, in distance it turned on her back, just of joy. Then my cat friendly and carefully came closer to the mouse, but the mouse did attack my cat, when their headscame closer!
      What a pitty. I liked the mice very much, but also my cat.
