    In combat, my M-4 carbine had the PEQ-2 laser, ACOG, extra magazine pouch on the stock, and flashlight. I took the lame gangster grip off. It would get hung up on everything. And a three point sling. I carried that in Afghanistan and Iraq. Worked out just fine. 🇺🇸

    One explanation I heard from T.REX was holo+mag for a short range gun that you might want to reach out at distance, and an LPVO for a longer range gun you might want to engage up close.

    With the rate of how things are escalating in this country I am slowly turning my go to AR from a red dot home defense setup into a do it all setup. In training having an lpvo and a offset is truly the best way to run an AR for tyrant fighting lol.

    Light, Good Red Dot or Holo Sight, back up irons.
    That will do everything you need it to do out to 300 yards unless you're trying to punch single holes in things. In that case, get a different rifle. Not that an AR 15 can't do that, but it would drift so far outside of it's lightweight and handy purpose as to be nearly unrecognizable.

    Biggest perk to running dot/magnifier is having the same weapon NV capable. I can kick my magnifier to the side and drop my NODs and go to work in the dark.
    If you're not planning on running night vision, LPVOs are probably the superior option.

  • @tomcurrie2427
    @tomcurrie2427 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have to agree with almost everything you said, and some of what you didn't say, BUT....
    I will comment that there are good reasons to avoid using "strobe" on those lights that have this "feature" -- strobe sounds like a great feature when you read the ads about how it will "disorient" the bad guy. And it even seems like it might work, when you play around with it in the daytime. The problem comes when you try using it in the dark, especially in a home defense situation. You're right that even a bright light won't blind the user when used properly even in a room with white ceiling and walls, and yes the strobe will partially disorient someone you shine it on, but it will also disorient YOU. One particular problem with strobe in any LE or HD scenario is that it changes your perception of any movement and can make you think there was movement even when there wasn't.
    By the way, also on the topic of whether or not your weapon-mounted light is going to blind you _and_ the complaints about aiming a gun where you have not decided to shoot yet, both are solved by using the light and gun correctly. Entering a room in the dark, the gun and light should be pointed upward enough that the gun is pointed over the likely height of anyone in the room and the light is splashed off the ceiling. With any decent light, in the dark you should be able to easily illuminate an entire room splashing light off the ceiling with the gun in something very close to a high ready position. This works equally well with a pistol, carbine, or shotgun. Of course, like everything else in life, it works better with at least some practice.

    Biggest thing I see people forget. Surrounding area. Examples of what I mean, people shooting pistols in the plains of Oklahoma, and 20" barrels in places you can't shoot past 100 yards. In the Ozark mountains I'm running Radian lower (i am left-handed) and a SOL 13.7 upper with a Superlative Arms piston system with Surefire Closed CTN flash hider pinned and welded giving a legal 16.1, Strike Eagle 1-6x24. It's the plinker, coyote blaster, and premises inspector. Streamlight Protac HL(havent had good luck with the Surefire personally, could be just mine but seems to drain batteries faster) for the dark, IMI 77 grain Razor Core to lay them hard. I'm shooting no more than 200 yards around here, and coyotes are within 75 yards the way our holler is.

    I'm a 6mm ARC fan but since it's still so new . My do all be all AR15 is ...
    Criterion 12.5" Hybrid Nitride 6.5G PISTOL WITH SBA3 , FCD / C4 11.5" Quad Rail , PLX 1-8× GRIFFIN MIL ACSS , Offset 509T , Modlite OKW , M84 AMBI Large Charging Handle , YHM Resonator K with Kurz Kit , AERO Gen 2 Ambi Controls Lower , Geissele SD3G Trigger , and HSP D3 Sling . I favor BCM Grips , Colt H2 Buffer and Springco Spring.
    I choose to go with 6.5G because it's good for CQC and shooting out to 700 yards. Using Black 123g BTHP is pretty devastating 700 yards and in . Once I get the 6ARC finalized and tested. I'm more than likely gonna go with 13.9" with Pinned Warcomp and SF SOCOM 762 MINI II as my do all be all AR15 for 1k yards and in The more and more I shoot 6.5g and 6ARC. The less I even bother with 556N .
    Magnifier and red dot still do have a purpose. Just something I will never use ..
    You are 110% correct . Sell what you don't need . At one point I had 15 ARs. Now I have 7 super rock solid setup with extra parts . Just remember in your SHTF situation . Your only gonna be able to bring 1 Long Gun and PISTOL with you if your bugging out . Obviously variables for arming other family members..

    Bought my first gun in october 2021. Last gun I just got is a budget ar15 lower and upper in 5.56 and a couple duramags. Cost $420 exactly all said and done. Put a cheap scope on it I had layin around for now. Got two .22 rimfire rifles. Savage 62f (3-9x40 AO scope w/see thru rings) and a Henry lever action h001. Ruger wrangler revolver with checkered rosewood grips. Shield plus OR with tritium sights that I put a cheap red dot and streamlight light/laser on. I'm supposed to inherit a bunch of beautiful shotguns and rifles from my deceased grandfather and likely never will due to greedy family.

    Disagree that LVPOs make magnifiers obsolete. A red dot or holo is definitely superior for 1x application to an LVPO and a 3x magnifier (or even a 6x magnifier like Vortex makes) allows you to ID a target pretty much up to the 556’s effective range.

    (Budget set up) Bushnell red dot, around $65 and it’s a very solid red dot. Magpul gen 2 flip up sights, around $87 for the pair. A riser mount to co-witness and you’re good to go as far as sights. I would maybe add a flashlight but for the everyday man who owns an ar for range shooting and self defense this is all you need. You know they make scope mounts with picitinny rails on top so you can also mount a micro red dot over any LPVO such as the Burris Optics P.E.P.R. Tactical Scope Mount. You can also simply use a 45 degree mount for a micro dot sight with an LPVO just like you did with your ACOG. If you get a bullet proof LPVO, I see no advantage an ACOG has over an LPVO. For the price of an ACOG, there are plenty of LPVO's that could stand up to some real punishment. If you're stuck on Trijicon, even they offer an LPVO for less than their ACOG fixed power optic. The Trijicon AccuPoint 1-6x24 it the one I've seen. I also prefer a 30mm tube for a magnified optic so I'd probably look elsewhere for an LPVO, but that's just my personal preference.

    So, my basic build is for the fight and its my SHTF/Minute Man Infantry build. I want a tool I'm not about building. I want my gun to work and reliable. I want it built to work. This isn't a competition or a fun gun while it can do those as well. Its my amazing jack of all trades but master of none.
    Upper is BCM Mk2 14.5 MCMR Enhanced Lightweight Rail with standard weight barrel and a SureFire WarComp Flash Hider. BCM BCG and have the BCM ambidextrous 3x3 charging handle. I have BCM MLOK QD attached as well on the Rail and a BCM MLOK short vertical grip. I also use BCM's MLOK SureFire Scout Mount out front on my rail.
    The Lower is also a BCM complete lower but I upgraded the trigger to a Geissele SSA-E. I have the BCM ambidextrous safety selector. I use Lancer Smoke Translucent L5AWM magazines and a Lancer Coupler as well. Yet this only works for the first reload. I use 2 types of Ammo 77 Gr Open Tip Match Black Hills for Defense for the fight small amount for practice and 62 Gr USA White Box range/practice time . This is the ammo I use with all ARs and 5.56x45mm systems.
    Sight set up is a little outdated but works for my do it all Rifle. I use Troy HK style tritium back up flip up sights. My main sight is an EOTECH EXPS3-4 with G33 magnifier. I have a PEQ15 but only on it if It is needed.

      My brand new FN 15 tactical 2 DMR (18 inch barrel and timney trigger setup) weighs too much for me and I haven’t even stuck sights on it. I’m thoroughly convinced that if I have to carry it around a sling, I may be able to carry it , and when I can’t or when I need to move fast, you can lay a gun down with that safety , whereas a pistol should stay on the person for emergency access - I won’t worry too much about weight , but it’s something to keep in mind. Everyone wants a lightning fast setup, but for real world matters, we’re not going to be lugging it for 30 miles like the military does- were using it to protect our own area within 200 yards or more.

    If I could only have one 'do all' It'd be a 14.5 or 13.7 with a fixed magnification prism optic and canted mrds/irons, 2 point sling, and a solid weapon light, and a vfg.
    For 99.99% of engagements joe schmoe is going to get into, your max distance will be like 20 yds so a 10.3 or 11.5, rds, 2 point sling, and a ~500 lumen light is all you'd ever really need.

      That’s how I’m thinking of setting up my first AR. I have many pistols and shoot comp, but I want to get an offset red dot , and offset irons at the 45 degree mark. Seems easier to turn the gun and shoot, then it does to put your secondary hand up to change the sight to 1x, or move the magnifier out of the way. Garand thumb recommends an offset setup and I agree with anything he says when it comes to operator stuff. Dude is the real deal and has actual operator time in. He has a great video on how to setup an AR and I used that as a guide for setting myself up and trying what I like to see what’s the best.

      Jon Duncan I’m running an offset dot with a 1x4 power lpvo typically set to 4 power and room clearing is a little uncomfortable over time. I often end up backing my lpvo back down to 1x and dealing with the eye box. I also don’t like the blind spot that is created by my lpvo when I’m using my offset dot. Absolutely requires a decent amount of training to figure out how the setup works for you. All boils down to what the guns for I suppose.

      Why so? I'm about to get me a vortex magnifier to match my vortex strikefire 2 red dot sight. Does it make it work better when it's further away from the red dot, or is it just the eye relief?

    • @johnphillips222
      @johnphillips222 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is like you mentioned, purely eye relief. The magnifiers have such a small eye relief that the mafnifiers have to be mounted at the furthest rear position.
      The marketing photos and TH-cam videos from pretend experts have the magnifiers mounted way too far forward. It is easy to spot, because they have a flip up rear sight behind the magnifier.
      Don't believe any "internet" or "TH-cam" expert, just because. Before you go to the range to sight in the red dot and magnifier, see for yourself. What position gives you the best field of view and proper eye relief with the magnifier?
      Mounting the magnifier all the way back on the AR will be the best location, but see for yourself what happens when the magnifier is mounted forward enough to use a flip up rear sight. That is where people negatively comment that the eye relief is too short for the magnifiers. If a magnifier is used, the flip up rear sight has to be removed.
      That may require 45 degree offset sights, a MI flip up rear sight in front of the red dot with the large hole, or ditching a backup sight.
      Thanks for asking the good question, why.

    My opinion for perfect setup would have a 15" handguard. The setup would have a simple red dot, a set of Mbus Pro iron sights, and a USGI sling with QD attachments. It is important to keep the weight down and thus I would not put anything more on the rifle if I can avoid it. The 300 AAC in a 16" barrel is a good start point for short to medium range. An 18" barrel with a Wylde chamber is a good start point if you use the 5.56x45.

    All of the arguments against flashlights are from dudes who don't use guns for work.
    1. I've pointed my gun at lots of people that I ended up not shooting.
    2. If your light is bright enough, the only thing the other guy sees is a wall of light.
    3. Don't blind yourself. That's dumb. Don't do that.

    • @jonduncansakurawallknifegarden
      @jonduncansakurawallknifegarden 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I want them to see a wall of light and now know where to shoot, and I want to control the light in a bad situation. I want to be the light controller at that point. If I don’t like it - there is a switch to turn it off. Guys who say this in my area, are guys that can’t afford any extra gear , and want to justify it to THEMSELVES - and they usually seem to also be the same guys who don’t see “why anyone would ever need a fancy sight on an AR when the iron sights work just fine!” And they are pretty much running a giant polymer hand guard from the 80’s, don’t believe in mLok or keymod, and don’t watch anything on the gun channels (or they’d see tons of people running lights and red dots and even lasers... oh my gosh lasers?!?!?!!) lol. They don’t like change , because they can’t afford it, and that’s not their fault or even a problem , however they try to emulate their own shooting style as the right way, and they tend to disagree with anyone who has anything that they can’t afford or can’t run on their guns because their wife will divorce them if they buy anymore Gun gear (to preface this I should have added that I live in the Bay Area- most liberal of the liberal places on earth and if you say the word gun in public you can get locked up as a threat to society for even thinking about gun models or parts. If we try to get ammo, it’s illegal unless we pay extra money to the state each time at a dollar amount. Don’t worry Ca, I’m writing this from a free state , and I wouldn’t dare talk about guns in Ca (wink ).

    LPVOs are great but not always better than red dot/magnifier or acog. Those fixed optics with be a hell of a lot clearer and faster than LPVOs.
    I like both setups but there’s different scenarios for each. LPVOs might but the best all around but jack of all trades master of none. Good at everything but great at nothing. Acog or EO Tech and magnifier definitely are great at what they are designed for.
    Granted I do like LPVOs are going in the right direct. Like larger tube diameters, 34mm, on the vortex 1-10. It allow more light in and makes a clearer image and more generous eye box. I would like to see a LPVO in an elcan optic size and shape.

    I don't think there's any one "best" setup for an AR, but the fewest accessories that will give the most versatility are as follows.
    Start with a 16 inch barrel, make sure it's reliable, and then a 1-6 LPVO, a white light, and an inexpensive IR laser unit, and the rifle can do anything from 5yd out to 500 during the day, and out to 300~ish at night with either white light or NV if you wanna be sneaky beaky.

    • @Kross8761
      @Kross8761 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mail-qh2qc I'm not concerned about adding too much extra weight, I just don't see the need for hanging 8lbs of accessories that I don't need on my rifle. And batteries, the only things I listed that require batteries are the light and IR laser, the LPVO can likely accept a battery for use in low light, but it is not a requirement.
      I would rather have the weight that I save from not having 42 different attachments/accessories be used to carry extra ammo, especially in a shtf situation, no one has ever said "crap! I brought too much ammo!" In a gunfight. Besides, aside from what I listed there's nothing else I need on my rifle, some type of grip on the rail can be a nice addition, but isn't a necessity. Quality light, IR Laser, and optic, back-up irons are not an accessory, they are critical (in my opinion mandatory) on a fighting rifle, as is a quality sling.
      Not really trying to argue per se, just explaining my thought process behind building a well-rounded duty rifle.
