Things that are second nature to me when using my AR’s, as an Army Veteran; SPORTS (what to do if you have a failure in shooting), ride the charging handle forward and lock it before hitting the bolt release to load it, always close the dust cover unless you are actively shooting (to prevent debris from entering the port), check your ammunition for serviceability and general cleanliness (using dirty ammo is how you end up with failure to fire and if you use your forward assist with gritty ammo, you can end up jamming the round in the chamber). BTW, the reason the M-16 had the forward assist was because of the ammunition that was produced at the time and it fouled the ammunition. The ammunition was later changed and has been improved since then and that’s why you see less failures and less use of the forward assist.
Same weapon, love it, had it about 6-7 years. Great AR that shoots well and is a blast at the range.😂. Clean it, store it properly, a dab oil and you’re good.
Very nicely done. I am a Vet and I trained with an M16. But that was in 1986, and I’ve forgotten a few things. Your video was a nice reminder of the similarities. For instance, I forgot the forward assist was called the forward assist. It’s interesting that you mentioned it’s rarely used with the AR15, whereas we were taught SPORTS. (Slap in the mag, Pull the charging handle, Observe the chamber, Release it, Tap - the forward assist, and Squeeze.) You are probably familiar with that. So I suppose with the AR15 it would be SPORS. Anyway, great video. I learned a lot.
A couple others have mentioned it, but I wanted to make it clear, the charging handle doesn't move with the bolt during normal operation. The charging handle remains forward. There is a latch on the charging handle to keep it in place. You release the latch with your thumb when you pull it rearward. To lock the bolt open, press the bolt latch with the thumb of your left hand, pull the charging handle back until the bolt latches, then push the charging handle forward until it latches. We are talking about two latches here: one for the bolt and one for the charging handle. You do not want the charging handle moving with the bolt when you release the bolt. When you release the bolt, slap the bolt release with the heel of your left hand. The release is more prominent for this reason. You can also chamber a round from the magazine while the bolt is forward. Hold the fore stock with your left hand and with the thumb and index finger on your right hand, pull the charging handle back and release it all in one move. Give the charging handle a push to make sure it latches.
The best way to learn the AR-15 for you young guys is to seriously consider enlisting in a Military branch of your choosing. Fabulous way to pick up on useful skills to bring back to civilian life and to serve our Country.
Rifles chambered in 5.56 can fire .223 but rifles chambered in .223 shouldn’t be used to fire 5.56 for chamber pressure differences. Also rifles chambered in .223 Wylde can fire both 5.56 and .223 .
Hey thank you for this video!!! I'm picking up my new AR-15 tomorrow from a Black Friday sale!!!! Have you made your breakdown video on how to clean yet? I'm looking forward to watching the other videos that you might have!!! Thanks again and have a great day!!!
A very good presentation on basic operation of an AR 15. Suggestions, get a rifle vise or build a simple stand to hold the rifle. Also if you are going to talk about the amo ... please clarify and be specific as to the caliber of amo that can be fired in an AR15, is based on the specific caliber the rifle is chambered to fire. Yes a rifle chambered in 5.56 it can safely fire 2.33 , but not the reverse safely. Let us not forget 9mm. This can't be an issue glanced over, in any presentation.that is not geared to the topic. Thanks
Well thanks for your contact. I’ve always wondered how to operate one of these. You never know I might find one on the ground someday in the future now on how to use it.
I have that magazine lock and it’s actually pretty spectacular if you can find where to buy one. Comes with two Abus keys and you can order new keys directly from Abus. I think I got mine from White Oak Armory a couple years ago. If you lost the keys, you can mill it out with tools. It’s not a permanent theft solution, but it makes it so that nobody can just grab your AR and some magazines and go on a shooting spree without spending at least a few hours in a garage with some tools to get the lock out of the magazine well. It also locks the upper onto the lower. The only improvement I could see to this is perhaps adding a metal loop that could be locked onto a cable to make it harder to steal from a vehicle. Apparently, the company that developed these also made them for Glock handguns, but those are impossible to find. If anyone knows of any just shoot me a response, please. Decent variant basic operations video. I didn’t need it, but was curious about what you had to say.
much tks brother for the video, the first one was very well explained , but was hard as you've said, to see the whole rifle. again tks for this video, keep up the good job.
The first step when you pick up a rifle is to pull the charging handle to the rear, lock it, visibly check the chamber, remove the magazine, and place the rifle on safe.

I too live in an "unfriendly state", possibly even more unfriendly that yours (ahem, CA), at least you can still have the "evil features" on your rifle. May be time to move 🤔 New sub here! Salute 🫡
I also live in what you would call an "unfriendly" state, and to be honest my own views on firearms would probably be considered "unfriendly" too. I do own a rifle inherited from my grandfather, who taught me target shooting on his property when I was very young. I cherish it and will continue to vote for the right of other people to have those same experiences, but I do not believe that civilians need (or are constitutionally guaranteed) access to the degree of firepower most of your viewers probably do. Frankly, I have no idea why this video came up in my recommendations. All this to say, even though we likely disagree, I wanted to comment on how professional and educational this video is. I particularly appreciated that you discussed proper safety precautions first, and then repeatedly throughout the video. I also valued the efficient explanation that covers the basics without assuming the viewer has any prior knowledge of use or terminology. You focused on the important info without editorializing, and alluded to your personal views without getting into politics. This is exactly the kind of video I would show someone I wanted to be more educated on the subject of gun control, so that they know what they're talking about before calling for bans on this or that. Decent function video for beginners. I'm wondering if anyone else cringes every time you lock the bolt to the rear and just leave that charging handle all the way out as well.

To increase shooting pleasure marksmanship training is desirable. The United States Army Marksmanship Unit delivers the best training. It’s called Small Arms Firing School, an annual 3 day event for civilians in late July at Camp Perry in Ohio. The training is conducted by Champion Military Shooters who demonstrate marksmanship with the US Service Rifle and these match conditioned rifles along with ammunition are issued to students for 200 yard shooting exercises. At the conclusion of training participants get certification to enter CMP/NRA ServiceRifle Competition which is the best inspiration to develop marksmanship. Also students may enter an Army authorized M16 Match at Camp Perry the day after their training completion and the top 10% of shooters get 4 points toward the 30 needed to earn the prestigious US Distinguished Rifleman Badge from good scores in Service Rifle Competition.
You mentioned unfriendly state. At least you’re allowed to keep your pistol grip and detachable magazine sans adjustable butt stock. In CA with our draconian gun laws, if you want to keep your AR pistol grip and a full adjustable butt stock you need to render your magazine fixed. Or if you prefer to have a fully detachable magazine then your AR cannot have those “evil features” like a normal pistol grip, instead a cockamamie “fin” grip and a fixed butt stock.
If the bolt is locked to the rear, it would still slam forward. The charging handle is basically just a device to pull the bolt back. If the bolt is locked to the rear, it doesn't matter where the charging handle is. The bolt will still slam forward. In fact, in the Army, when we did inspections, we woud lock the bolt to the rear, then slide the charging handle back forward to lock it. After inspection, we would just hit the bolt release.
Nice video. Had nothing better to do so was watching youtube. However you are wrong about the AR-15 being designed for the military. It was created in the late 50's but for civilian use first. Colt bought Armalite out and Stoner went to work for them and modified it for the military. But after advisors in Vietnam tested it out. I use my M&P15 22 to train because ammo is cheaper and it is the same style as my M&P 15.
Good that you explained Armalite rifle. But an AR is not an M-16. It only looks like it from the outside.
Thanks for watching!
great video ty
Thank you - glad it was helpful!
how close to your face does the bolt come?
Not too close to be an issue. Thx for watching!
Thank you and thanks for watching!

Did you know that there was a company called Duncan that manufactured parking meters?
That’s actually pretty cool I didn’t know that! Haha. Maybe I’ll make my logo a parking meter 😎
