The AR 15 and ammunition design for it requires a 20 inch barrel this is per Eugene Stoner. Hey 16 inch barrel would be the bare minimum to obtain the velocity is needed for the projectile to actually perform the way it was intended to. I own both. Between several AR’s. I also have found that the mid length gas system on the 16 1/2 inch barrel worked very well. Almost making them last as long as the rifle length gas system on the 20 inch barrel. 5.56 mm is barrel length sensitive. The magic number is 2200 ft./s. Below that speed it’s basically a handgun rounds. That speed in above is where it was intended to function and it does that very very well at the higher speeds. I was clearing buildings from the top down and I ride with a 20 inch barrel M16A2/ A3. Combat military police. So it can be done. And as you well know the Marines have been doing it for quite a while with a 20 inch barrel even going back to the 20 inch barrel. Because, that little short piece of crap barrel just wasn’t good enough for the Marines. Damn right. They needed a real rifle. HOOAH!!! 108th MPCO, Ft. Bragg, NC
I remember reading in an American Rifleman article that there was a study during Vietnam War on 223/556 barrel length. It showed that 11.5 was the shortest it could be and still achieve effective velocity. Granted ammo has changes a lot since then, but still a valid consideration.
I received a 7.5" 5.56 as partial payment for a job. Dude tells me it doesn't have to be registered as a pistol because he bought the lower as a 'multi-caliber.' I'm thinking, "did I miss a law change?" Anyway. Went boating today and lost it overboard
20 inch. It works. Cleared a lot of rooms with it back in the day, never had a problem. Don’t ever let someone tell you can’t CQB with a longer rifle. We did for years and won 🙂👍🇺🇸🦅 Follow up Shots faster as well. Less muzzle rise. The round was designed for it as well. 👍
I just built my first AR. 20 inch with a 1x-6x variable power scope and fixed stock. Basically my "M16A5" and it just feels like such a solid weapon. CQB can definitely be accomplished with it, and I pity the fool who eats 5.56 point blank at max velocity out of that barrel.
14.5 , 18, 8.5 .300/silenced, 11.5/ silenced, 16. And maybe 20 for nostalgic reasons from basic one day. And 10.3 for the block 2 mk18 clone. Man, I need 3 more guns now that I think about it.
5.56n 12.5" . Perfect for 300 yards and in . It also still compact for CQB.. 6.5G 12.5" . Perfect for taking deer or hogs out to 300 yards . Also still Super sonic out to 800 yards. If you could only afford 1 rig . This might be the best choice . CQB , Hunting and Long range all in 1 setup.. 300 BLACKOUT 9" . Wouldn't use this without a Can . 6mm ARC 16" . Still a very new cartridge . It's unknown what the best barrel length is or isn't. Hornady states the 6ARC Looses 30FPS per inch lost of barrel . I'm also trying out 13.5" 6ARC. If it performs well it might be my do all be all.. If I could only have 1 rig . It would be 12.5" 6.5G Pistol with SBA3 , PLX 1-8 GRIFFIN MIL ACSS , and YHM R2 Resonator K Suppressor.
A 10-in with a law tactical folder brings OAL to 26, put a blade on, and a foregrip, classifying it as a firearm. Perfect mix of compactness and ability for any cqb or medium range situations... Long-range situations are generally never needed outside of warfare and an AR should not be your go-to gun for long range anyway
9mm 9.5", 5.56 11.8", 7.62x51 14.5". Then you go longer for farther in 7.62 and larger PWS is the best AR Platform on the market. Our Opinion due to Piston System. Even in the 6.5 CM GOD BLESS AMERICA 🇺🇸
Traditionally, yes. However, at that point some landings are losing velocity and energy due to the type and burn rate of the powder so it’s important to find ammo with slow enough burn rates to utilize that big boi barrel.
*12.5* , slightly less velocity than the 14.5, a nice bump from 11.5, and short enough to move around pretty well. Now they just need to optimize a gas system somewhere between carbine and mid length. Me personally I went with carbine and will throw a k can on it, can't be _too_ much harsher with the dwell time.
Ive had multiple length barrels but the one i prefer the most is the 10.5 inch. Solid to 300 yards and super efficient when forced with a CQB situation.
I'd say 14.5 is the best "do it all", but I honestly rock the 8.5 because I can run a suppressor and still have a great truck gun that can hit out to 300y and had lethal speeds at 100y.
What do you think about a 13.7 inch barrel as an all around, for both cqb, vcqb and open field shooting? Would you recommend another length? Ps I live in Italy and we don’t have atf or any rifle, sbr or pistol classification for barrels
Learned on a 20" A1 back in 78. Built a bunch over the years of different lengths. My favorite is a 16" pencil barrel with mid length gas. Sort of an A1.5.....😀 🍻🍕 in case I ever make it down to N.C.
I forgot what the number is, but Guns&Gadgets has a video with what's goin on with Q. There is a bill being presented to Congress to remove SBRs from the NFA.
@@johndoe-so2ef Very unlikely, yes. But wouldn't say never. Also have you read or understand the reasoning why? Plus this is an election year. If the right people get elected and enough people give them hell. We can get the support moving to get things rolling.
There is a large bump in velocity at 16” from 14.5”….a disproportionate amount compared to most velocity gains….100-150 FPS depending on ammo from only a 1.5” change…..after that, slowly diminishing returns. Also legal rifle length. Get mid length gas barrel and call it good.
With everything being equal the returns will be diminished to scale as the barrel gets longer. Nothing magic happens between 14.5" and 16". Go look at BBTI and see for yourself. The same barrel is cut down inch by inch and tested over a chronograph with various ammo. Using different guns is not going to give you a clear picture since different barrels and chambers can have varying dimensions due to wear and manufacturing tolerances.
@@harrypeterson9287 I have, I have read and tested myself many different configurations and the spike in velocity is there at 16-16.5” (what most 16” barrels actually register at). To each their own, buy what you like, but the gains do not diminish just because the barrel is getting longer as you state. they DO start diminishing at a certain point after the gas expansion/acceleration spike, but not until after 20” with average ammo in a 5.56/.223…on average….so loads and rifles yes, but the majority do better the longer they are up to 20”. There are very consistent random gains at certain barrel lengths for all calibers as the gas continues to expand behind the bullet, the bullet is continuing to ACCELERATE, and the peak of that acceleration is between 14.5” and 17” with most ammo in a 5.56 again everything based on averages. If you’re shooting less than that length, you are leaving a lot of energy on the table…nothing wrong with it, I myself have a 14.5” M4A1 replica of my duty weapon a long time ago and I love it. It’s my go to other than my Mk 12.
I'll point something out with 300 blk. With a 16" barrel the 220 grain sub sonic rounds travel right at super sonic. A 14" brings them down to sub sonic speeds like they were designed for. The standard grain rounds travel right around the 2200 fps range which is the threshold for ballistics to change from temporary cavities to permanent ones. If you're slower you might as well run a pistol or a big a projectile as possible like 458 or 50. I run a 18" 223 wyld barrel btw. I would have run 20" but I couldn't find a guard longer than 17". In my opinion is near perfect.
The best length is an IWI Tavor with a 16-in barrel and an overall length of just over 26 in 😁 My truck gun is a 10.5-in AR pistol and I would not go any shorter than that for 5.56, And even at 10.5 in I'm using soft points because 55 right FMJ probably won't fragment properly
The DD mk18’s made from mid 2017 and on are no longer over gassed. They have the correct crane spec .070” gas port and run beeeaaaautifully. Better than most full size carbines out there let alone other shorties. You should send yours back to DD and tell them it runs like shit and they will give you a new barrel that isn’t blown TF out
@@jameskiser7791 yeah most commercial 11.5’s have bigger gas ports than the crane spec 10.3’s. It’s kinda funny most people think 11.5 means softer and more consistent gas pulse. But realistically a crane spec 10.3 has a softer albeit shorter gas impulse.
I have a much better answer: The Answer is VELOCITY. The 556/223 round is essentially a varmint round and not the right projectile to take down larger game like T-Rexes (joke) People forget it's just a high-pressure 22 round. So what is it really for? Well, no one is really hunting with it even though you could from boars and smaller. It's just a semi-auto is not as accurate as a bolt-action. (less moving parts) Therefore, if we can deduct that we're using this for self-defense against other people then what is essential is the effect this caliber has on human flesh. Federal Ammo explains that there is no pistol caliber that can travel fast enough to cause temporary wound cavities or air pockets that expand beyond the elasticity threshold of human flesh. Therefore, Wounds created by pistol rounds ranging from 32auto to 44 magnums will look like bullet wounds. (don't ask me about cassull, I don't know, look it up yourself) Alternatively, the 556/223 out of your standard 18-inch rifle that travels around 3200 fps will tear flesh apart, so if you google image 556 round wounds you'll find its victims torn or exploded. Federal Ammo also explains that in order to achieve this you need a minimum of 2300 FPS. Which explains why a slower larger round such as the 762 or 300 blackouts can still achieve the same results within 50 yards. In summary: I think the purpose of firing an AR rifle or pistol is to effectively tear up humans. Nevermind the shock output from being hit by a rifle, Your victim will simply be shredded. (without armor) (So it's not going to look like Al Pacino at the end of scarface where he's shot but still intact.) Therefore, the correct barrel length is whatever your reasonable distance is while maintaining a minimum of 2300 fps. Otherwise, just stick with some sort of PCC or Lever action rifle that shares the same ammo as your sidearm. So if you have one of those shooting chronographs. Just make sure your barrel length Plus suppressor setup is firing at over 2300 FPS.
Best length for overall use would likely be the shortest without needing a tax stamp. Without any legal restrictions, 11.5 or 12.5 SBR and a can. 12.5 for the new guys, but I’d say that I’m not alone with all the other guys wanting to say that one inch doesn’t make a whole lot of difference lol, that and because rails for 11.5s are much more plentiful while the barrel itself being more prevalent while being slightly more ergonomic without a big hit in velocity. The 12.5s are the new hotness with it having more offerings on a mid length at the expense of less dwell time.
!3.7 with a long muzzle device pinned & welded is what everyone seems to be doing around here. But i dont know why really. My pinned 14.5 is the same length as a pinned 13.7. Its getting ridiculous , lol. A 16'' rifle will run just great for most of us non door kickers.
I have 11.5, 16, 20 inch, and my favorite is 11.5 because u have good veloicy and still can reach out, just personal preference if i had to shoot past 300 yards i will grab my 20 inch, but for personal protection and carry i prefer the 11.5.. I love taking my 16 deer hunting and don't say it's under power done killed a 6 pointer..but my hunting spots r mostly 70 yards and closer...
You didn't mention another reason to go 14.5 inch - 14.7 inch is because you can pin and weld a permanent muzzle device to bring the overall length to >=16 inches to meet legal requirements for a rifle.
I prefer a 12.5" if its a 5.56 but i also have a 14.5" i like and even a 20" i really like. I even like the 12" in the grendel too. but tend to lean towards the 18" when it comes to the grendel. 300 blackout 8.5"-10.5" is plenty. i really dont like going any less than 11.5" on the 5.56 or over 18".
@@19stump65 for sure I’d you are trying to get every bit of performance from the Grendel that long barrel would definitely be best but for what I do with mine 18” is plenty for shooting out to distance and the 12” is definitely enough for defense and hunting out to 300yds or more. 14.5 is also about as short as you can go before you need to rework all the armory racks and vehicle mounts. Logistical nightmare trying to outfit units with the racks to secure and transport just to tinker with barrel length.
I often see on yutube videos of weapons that we in Italy with our restrictions only dream of (even having HP ammo can lead to years in prison) but I wonder why you use the 5.56 with 7-14inc barrels and 2-6x optics on a range of 25-50yards isn't a 9-40 / 45 and a red dot better?
I’m gonna side with Stoner on this one and say the 20” is the best “do all” rifle since that’s the original design. Stoner wouldn’t have and other barrel length for that gas DI system. He didn’t mind going shorter for the stoner 63 or the AR18 since they were piston driven.
This is a loosely connected questions to the topic of the video, but hoping you can provide some insight. The question is with the growth in popularity of AR Pistols and the fact that the 5.56 round needs a longer barrel to be effective, why can't 5.56 rounds be loaded with faster burning powder similar to what is used with 300 Blackout rounds so 10" and smaller barrels can still be effective? I am assuming that they pressure required to launch the 5.56 bullet from the round casing would not change so you would just achieve that pressure faster and therefore get the same velocity out of say a 10" barrel that you get from a 16" barrel.
If you're watching this now and are looking for an answer, here it is: The best "do all" barrel length is a 14.5, a negligible amount of velocity difference between it and a 16" to save yourself weight and maneuverability, next I recommend a shorter barrel if you meet the age requirement, specifically a 11.5" inch barrel, then grab yourself a recce type rifle for distance, 18" is a great choice with an LPVO, but you can always go up to a 20" if you really want the max potential. Remember, a 20" barrel turns training ammo into duty ammo. EDIT: Always run suppressed if possible, if you don't have a silencer on one or more, you're doing something wrong.
I can’t decide if I want the 14.5 or 16 inch Geissele upper I’m not the biggest fan of the huxwrx muzzle device they use now at least with the 16 inch I can replace it although huxwrx came out with a adapter To run different types of suppressors on there muzzle device
wasn't the caliber made with a 20" barrel in mind? I know it's unwieldy, but 20" seems like a good length for velocity, burning off all the powder, etc.
@@explodojones so then if you can’t mount a bayonet or a 40 mike Mike it’s not a perfect barrel length. Assuming perfect means good for ALL occasions, but excellent at none
Thanks. You just saved 13 minutes of my life. On the other hand, I love my 16.5" barrel IWI Tavor X95 bullpup, which has an OAL of just the magic 26" (since I installed the aftermarket curved buttstock), and therefore is NOT an SBR.
I'm gonna say that unless you have a gain twist rifling barrel, anything under 16" should be just for putting holes in paper or hitting steel, the loss of velocity with the shorter barrels really cuts down on the damage a 5.56 can deal, without the speed the bullet won't even tumble and then your just poking .22 caliber holes in people and not having the wanted effect. I've read stuff about our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan shooting people multiple times and them just running away, they've captured enemies that had a dozen bullet wounds that had all healed up and went back to fighting, I read that General Petreous was accidental shot through the chest during training and only spent 2 days in the hospital even though he was shot through the right lung, he dropped down and did a hundred push ups to prove to the doctors he was fine, there's a video here on youtube of an incident I believe in Cleveland where a guy was shot 16 times by an AR pistol and he lived, the video wasn't actually about that part of it but about how the ambulance refused to come pick the kid up due to some jurisdiction bullshit and the cops had to take him to the hospital themselves.

Anyway. Went boating today and lost it overboard
Damn lol rip
In my experience, for 62 grain 5.56, 16 inches seems to be the best do it all length for a general shtf rifle.
20 inch barrels are significantly quieter than a 16 inch. The other firearms with 10 or so inch barrel is very loud even with muffs.
20 inch. It works. Cleared a lot of rooms with it back in the day, never had a problem. Don’t ever let someone tell you can’t CQB with a longer rifle. We did for years and won 🙂👍🇺🇸🦅 Follow up
Shots faster as well. Less muzzle rise. The round was designed for it as well. 👍
Trained and shot with the 20" barrel as well. With a fixed stock.
@@jimdozer999 me too
I don't disagree, but I definitely prefer my 14.5" for indoors work. It's just easier to maneuver with.
20 inch is definitely doable indoors if you can employ low and high compression effectively.
That's a nice setup
A 10-in with a law tactical folder brings OAL to 26, put a blade on, and a foregrip, classifying it as a firearm. Perfect mix of compactness and ability for any cqb or medium range situations... Long-range situations are generally never needed outside of warfare and an AR should not be your go-to gun for long range anyway
AR's are fine for long range. What are you talking about?
12.5 is a great one. Still retains decent velocity while being pretty compact.
11.5 is the lowest I’d go and still feel comfortable. But 12.5 is a great size too.
Everything from 10.5 to 18 has been called "do all rifle".
Literally.
12.5’’ does it all

I genuinely believe 16" barrel is the perfect length. Short but still shoots out at a high velocity
If you are hunting Coyote I find 20" or even 22" is best. Higher velocity, more energy. Add a bipod and a real scope. :)
Traditionally, yes. However, at that point some landings are losing velocity and energy due to the type and burn rate of the powder so it’s important to find ammo with slow enough burn rates to utilize that big boi barrel.
@@Swamprowdy 😆
*12.5* , slightly less velocity than the 14.5, a nice bump from 11.5, and short enough to move around pretty well.
Now they just need to optimize a gas system somewhere between carbine and mid length. Me personally I went with carbine and will throw a k can on it, can't be _too_ much harsher with the dwell time.
Ive had multiple length barrels but the one i prefer the most is the 10.5 inch. Solid to 300 yards and super efficient when forced with a CQB situation.
All CQB rifles should be bullpup and All ARs should have long barrels.

you're like me 12.5 my 10.5 is special but 12.5 is best
any length ar is better than no ar!
What about 24" for hunting coyotes, varmints, and deer?
I forgot what the number is, but Guns&Gadgets has a video with what's goin on with Q. There is a bill being presented to Congress to remove SBRs from the NFA.

14.5 with a mini suppressor same length as 12.5 will full length suppressor but with more velocity.
13.7-14.5” 1-7 twist with an aimpoint t2 for cqb
18 or 20”, 1-8 twist rifle length gas system with a vortex razor lpvo
This is the way
A video about twist rate and bullet weights versus barrel length would be beneficial for determining the right tool for the task.
Barrel length doesn't have anything to do with twist rate or bullet weight.
A lot to be said for that approach. Especially with a mid length pencil barrel.

Real world is use whatever you are most comfortable/accurate with. An inch or so won’t make that much of a difference (all Michael Scott jokes aside).
Twist rate to barrel length to round
I wonder how many sbr's aren't registered in America... *replace the brace, boys*
The DD mk18’s made from mid 2017 and on are no longer over gassed. They have the correct crane spec .070” gas port and run beeeaaaautifully. Better than most full size carbines out there let alone other shorties. You should send yours back to DD and tell them it runs like shit and they will give you a new barrel that isn’t blown TF out
This is true, I got one a couple years ago and it’s perfectly gassed!
I have a much better answer:
The Answer is VELOCITY.
(less moving parts)
Therefore, if we can deduct that we're using this for self-defense against other people then what is essential is the effect this caliber has on human flesh.
(don't ask me about cassull, I don't know, look it up yourself)
Alternatively, the 556/223 out of your standard 18-inch rifle that travels around 3200 fps will tear flesh apart, so if you google image 556 round wounds you'll find its victims torn or exploded.
Federal Ammo also explains that in order to achieve this you need a minimum of 2300 FPS. Which explains why a slower larger round such as the 762 or 300 blackouts can still achieve the same results within 50 yards.
In summary:
I think the purpose of firing an AR rifle or pistol is to effectively tear up humans. Nevermind the shock output from being hit by a rifle, Your victim will simply be shredded. (without armor)
(So it's not going to look like Al Pacino at the end of scarface where he's shot but still intact.)
Therefore, the correct barrel length is whatever your reasonable distance is while maintaining a minimum of 2300 fps.
Otherwise, just stick with some sort of PCC or Lever action rifle that shares the same ammo as your sidearm.
So if you have one of those shooting chronographs. Just make sure your barrel length Plus suppressor setup is firing at over 2300 FPS.

Or a 13.7 pinned to make it a 16 inch
I really don't think suppressors are that important. They're nice, but not really necessary
