This song and the reason behind it made a lot of people sign up to the donor register. It literally saved his father who had already donated a kidney himself many years before and the one he had left was failing his father found a donor who was a distant cousin in Australia and many others were saved too so it literally chased the monsters away for so many families. All the proceeds from the song were gifted to the British charity Help the heroes as both captain james and his father Colonol Blunt were in the British army. Truly beautiful all round.

I can add, it was a one take, live shot and the entire crew was in tears and his father asked why are you crying, I'm still here. Both James and Charles (father) served in the British Army and the line "I'm not your son, you're not my father" is something they said every time they got deployed

Heard this for the first time when a young man Iam Tongi sang this during his first American Idol audition, after his father died not long before that. I cried such a lot, couldn't see out of my eyes for a while. Iam Tongi was born in Hawaii, moved to America. He won idols last year. At one time he sang this with James himself and started crying, so did the judges and needless to say I sobbed. Great lyrics. Greetings from South Africa

Yeah, you should check it out. It’s definitely why he won the show because of his audition and it’s actually better than James version.. I think of the semifinal James came out to see it with him, but there was some sort of screwup miscommunication somewhere, but it was still good.

James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. If this song doesn't get to you emotionally, there is something wrong with you. This song resonates with me as I was my dad's caregiver for 5 years until he passed away 4 years ago.

His dad, who was himself a kidney donor, was dying with stage 4 kidney disease. No one in the immediate family was a match for a transplant. A distant cousin saw the video and turned out to be a match. Today, with the transplant, dad is doing well.

Thank you so very much for your heartfelt and very truthful comments. I could see this one affected you as it has affected so many who had the privilege of seeing this. Saeed, your wisdom is beyond your years ( this coming from a 70 y.o. who has seen many family members pass, both young and elderly). It comes from your heart, and you are spot on with your comments, which are spoken so eloquently. I am my mother's caregiver, who is in the early stages of dementia. I lost my dad and father-in-law to cancer within a few months of each other, and my mother-in-law is in the late stages of dementia and doesn't recognize her family anymore. It's very difficult to watch them deteriorate, and you literally do have to chase the monsters away. Saeed, never lose your humbleness, and always stay close to your family ❤️

This song made me cry when I first heard it. It so weird because the first thing that I thought of when my sisters and I, when we were kids would tell each other about monsters under the bed and in the closet. Today I still have to make sure my closets are shut. I also don't put anything under my bed. MONSTERS! Such a beautiful song!

Such an amazing artist I saw him live once. He’s unreal. He’s such an amazing person. I don’t know all of the background of him but he might have gone to Oxford for a little while but anyway, he has performed there and he was in the English army a very high rank I believe in special forces, I’ve read that a lot of people Even giving him credit for possibly stopping World War III. I see them talk about it on the talkshow. I also saw an interview with him about this song where there was no for him except for cousin family, who basically came through the 11th hour to save his dad. But he used to sing for his mates of the military, and they said how amazing he was which he is. He has such a unique sound. Idk how you held it together on this one! You came close. Have you cried on camera yet? Wow man the first time I heard this I had to pull over I cried so hard. My dad’s still here but not for much longer. He’s the best dad any person a kid could ask for. So maybe that’s why . . I think if you saw Iam Tongi first you might have cracked. His dad passed 8 months before he sang that at his audition on American idol last year and how he made it to the last 2 words without breaking was like divine intervention. You gotta watch the entire clip. It’s probably 7 minutes. It’s something else. Also, that’s amazing how you pegged that at the very start as a bedtime story. You’re good man. I was like holy crap. Has he seen this already?

    Sharing last week ...
So often I find value is given to the reality of what a relationship IS by HOW the other person approaches it ...
It defines it for me .
In life I had so little in common with my dad . ( Him : military vet / sports / hunting / conservative politics )
We didn't live close physically and didn't have a close relationship as some father / sons do.
I last saw my dad in person at my sisters funeral in 2016 when he was still fully himself .
After my dad's wife died of cancer , he mentally deteriorated to where living alone was becoming dangerous , so
Three years ago I visited the Alzheimer's home where he was placed by his caregiver ; my step sister .
Placing ME into a visiting room the nurse went off to fetch him and bring him in .
As he had broken his hip a year or so previous he walked in very small steps back and forth ....
miniscule steps slowly trodding forward ... till he got to the table where I was sitting ...
He looked at me / recognized me and made a surprised burst of emotion . so glad to see me ...
At that moment I got a sense that he didn't imagine he would ever see me again . ~ As I live on the other side of the country .
That visit I imagined it would be the last time I saw him
as few to several years would pass between visits and he was over 80 yeas old
More recently he had broken his hip for the second time and it was not surgically fixable . So strong pain meds were given ; which often causes rapid deterioration in older men . He developed pneumonia . and hospice care was soon initiated .
That's when my step sister messaged me that I may want to visit as it wasn't looking good.
The day I arrived he was very frail ; his body reminded me of an artistic drawing of a cadaver.
That's how close to death he was.
Nurse got him to consciousness and to open his squinting eyes ; she said :" for you " to me ...
I walked over into his line of sight and said ": Hi dad " ...
and I saw that slight glimmer of delighted recognition he gave me three years ago .
THIS was all I wanted . For him to know I was there .
The next morning when we arrived his body was forcibly breathing fast ; I noted his cheeks were even rosy red
deceivingly healthy looking compared to his pallor the day before
It was actually from his body overworking / unable to get oxygen to his lungs ... he was in the end stages
He took less frequent breaths ... for about an hour
    until absolute stillness and quiet
    I said to my stepsister
    " I think he's in the light now "
I'll treasure that time with him forever.
Our commonality was now me being with him as he faced death without fear .
Can't get closer than that .

If James had not released this his Father would have been gone in weeks. His Father agreed so James would have it. The recoding company were not happy because James would only do one take with no auto tune. James is a prolific song writer with an amazing voice and it isn’t easy to keep singing when you really cry. Both James and his Dad are really good men and you cannot watch this without feeling it. I watched a newer video of this song after they knew his Dad would be okay. It has nowhere near the impact because the fear and sadness is gone.

And I had to nurse him for 11 months. Watching him fade little by little every day. We reconciled before the end. It's been 8 and a half years. I miss him every day. My father and I had just talked intensely about our wrongs and rights after a long difficult relationship when he got a heartattack. I screamed NOOOO, not now! We have so much to catch up with each other! Luckily he survived after a 9 days coma and for 13 more years we had such a good time together. This video pictures it well, in the end when his father is sitting next to him. They also got extra time. I always listen with teary eyes and a grateful heart.

I have been watching your reactions. With gladnes. But, by your lack of reaction to this. Like, no emotion. I read you to be a narc. Maybe worse. So, I am off.

We don't know what story is behind people when We see them or why they show particular emotions or behaviours. If you would know me, and what i have been through in life, maybe you would understand or at the very least show respect. And i found none of that in your comment, so would i now have to judge you by this? I will not, so i will only wish you all the best.
