"You have to forgive them for yourself". I forgave my father in his last few months. took him into my home and cared for him, along with my wifes help. i sat and held his hand one night when he was doing particularly bad. at some point i dozed off and when i awoke at dawn he had passed away. i'm so glad i was able to do that for him. whether he deserved it or not i deserved it. i didnt do it because he was a good man, i did it because i am.

This song and the story behind it made a lot of people sign up to the donor register around the world and his father Colonol Charles Blunt was saved as were many other people around the world. All the proceeds from this song were donated to the Help the Heroes charity of great Britain which helps take care of our veterans and their families as both Colonol Charles Blunt and Captain James Blunt were both in the British army. The line i am not your son, your not father we are just two grown men saying goodbye is something that they would say to each other before deployments.
Please watch Iam Tongi sing this for the judges on American Idol it is a absolutely rendition of this song. Truly beautiful ❤

They said there was not a dry eye in the room except for Charles Blount when this video was done. He asked why is everyone crying? I am still here! I have seen this more times than I can say but still tear up every time. You can see on the first time he says we are just two grown men saying goodbye, the expression changes. I could tell "while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud". That line gets to me everytime!
This is beautiful but heartbreaking 💔

James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. If this song doesn't get to you emotionally, there is something wrong with you. This song resonates with me as I was my dad's caregiver for 5 years until he passed away 2 years ago.

Never heard this before. Wish I could have said good bye to my mom. She died of a massive stroke 2 yrs ago. Never had high blood pressure or any kind of warning or illness to suspect it was a possibility. As a nurse, when you're saving people from such things and can't save your own, it's even harder. I'm blubbering like a fool here. What a beautiful song and message. Thx Travis😎

James dad was actually dying from kidney failure & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney from a distant relative who reached out after this song came out & is doing okay now, this was the first time James played the song to his dad , the crew and James himself was crying and his dad said ‘why is everyone crying I am not dead yet’ , the record company wanted to auto tune the song but James said no because he wanted it to be real

A great reaction, thankyou! This song is the great leveller. In all the reaction videos to this you see all the "showbiz" stripped away from the TH-camr. All thats left is the real person behind the bluster. Whats revealed isnt always pretty but its (almost) always real. You showed yourself to be a fine man. A fine human being. And those were some wise words.

This song gets to me because it is about the kind of relationship that I wish that I could have had with my father. My father experienced a lot of childhood trauma that was his monster. He never beat his demons, so he beat us instead and passed down that childhood trauma to me and my siblings. I got in trouble and almost lost my kids because I didn't know how to not pass that trauma down on to them. I was able to get the help that I needed and, now, it's my turn to chase the monsters away...

One of the best reactions to this song on youtube. You knew right away , what James was telling us about. Empathy and connection is what you allowed us all to experience. Thank you. By the way , when this was recorded they had run out of time and had no match . ( his dad had donated a kidney years ago ) This video was what a distant relative saw and turned out to be a match/donor, also named Charles, I believe.

What makes this so very powerful is that both James and his father come from the best traditions of the British armed services, the full "stiff upper lip". James served as a British Army Captain in the Kosovo Intervention. (And may have stopped World War III by preventing a rather too gung-ho American general from attacking the Russians at an airport.)
Although I'm a leftie, I have a soft spot for the old-fashioned British aristocracy. They realise that high position gives responsibilities as well as privilege, and a surprising number still serve in our armed forces. James's family is actually spelt 'Blount' - same pronunciation - and I think they've fought for our country since at least the 1300s!

My father moved in with me in 2002. In march of 2009 he found out he had colon cancer and that it had moved into his spinal cord, several other organs and more than likely his brain. He started chemotherapy and another treatment. My great aunt was driving him to his appointments with other family. Around June 15 I took FMLA because he was going down hill. He was admitted but after a week he wanted to come back home at least for a little while. I was his power of attorney so his doctors said it was up to me but it was not going to be easy. I brought him home for a little over a week. We had planted 2 acres of purple hull peas, pintos, butter beans, corn, potatoes and corn earlier in the year so I was able to drive him around and show him our greatest garden we ever had. After I took him back the had to put him in a coma around July 23rd. He just had so much pain. I took the night shift from the first moment when he went to the hospital the first time and his brothers and sisters would take the day shift. I would show up at 3 so I could visit with the doctors. On August first he woke up at 1:30am, I had been holding his hand and he opened his eyes and smiled at me. He had no pain. I was all teary eyed and told him I loved him. It seemed like it lasted 4 or 5 minutes but I don’t know. I was there at night to scare his monsters away, he wouldn’t know where he was at and he wouldn’t remember he had the morphine button he could push and I would always get the nurse to give him an injection as well. I miss my father and this video so much reminds me of those 6 weeks.

Travis...my husband just lost his Dad on the 4th and they buried him yesterday. They had been at odds for over 5 years and had only reconciled one week before he passed. He thanks God for those few days they had together. Thank you for reacting to this.

I lost my mother last year and I am very glad that we have been very close for the past six months. It was difficult and painful, but we were able to say goodbye with great love and peace. Of course, this experience makes me feel this song in a completely different way. That goes pretty deep.
Mom's last words to me were that she loves me and that she apologizes for not being able to say anything comforting. I told her she was a great mom and I was all grown up now and she didn't have to worry about me. She may go in peace. I will never forget Mother's smile at my words.

So sorry for your loss, we lost our beloved mom 1year ago. Yes, it is very painful, every minute of everyday. But we know mom, is in heaven, with all of the dearly departed. They tell me time will heal my heartache. RIP - MOM, LOVE YOU.

I aimed for my own birth mothers forgiveness for giving up, me, my twin and my brother. Even though she smashed me and my twin against a wall, punched in the face and burnt with an iron. I was 2lb as a baby and my twin was smaller. My mum couldn't cope, but took it out on us. My father is an absolute hero. He's been batteling muscular dystrophy for years, his 2 brothers died at 50 (the age your suppose to die with that disease) but my dad took no medication, he's the oldest man alive with that condition. Fuckin hero!!!!

Feel the hurt within you, this song hits me in a different way having to say goodbye to my wife of 25 yrs before her 50th birthday(Cancer), she was so worried to leave her 2 young boys and I had to tell her on her death bed that she could let go now and that I'd still be there for them " to chase their monsters away"

Lost both of my parents in 2022 at the age of 30, while trying to graduate from university. I miss them both so much.
