    He wasn’t acting. At the time of this recording his Dad was dying. He did do this in one take. His father ended up getting a kidney transplant and didn’t pass away. He is still well now. Oh and yes, that’s his father.

      They couldn't find a donor and because of the release of this song and video they found a donor. So this goodbye song saved his dad's life.

    Yes, it's his real father and luckily, he's still with us. I had the privilege to hear James live, when he came to our small town two month ago. What a concert. He is as great live as in his music videos. And it's not just sad songs, he also has happy and upbeat songs. :) What a great artist. Hope to see you reacting to more of his songs.

    This was a one-take, raw video that James refused to have it auto-tuned. His dad is the one at the end of the video. His dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 Kidney Disease. He had donated one of his kidneys years before & now was having a hard time finding a new kidney for himself. So James Blunt decided to write that for his dad while he was still alive. That video was also the first time his dad heard the song too. After the song was released, lots of fans offered their kidneys. But in the end, a distant cousin of the Blunts came forward & was a match. His dad received the kidney & is alive & well today. Finally, a funny story I heard James Blunt tell was after the video was finished, he said that him & the entire crew were crying. His dad looked at them all & said, "Why are you crying? I'm the one that's dying!"

    Real tears, real emotions. His dad was dying with kidney disease and needed a transplant which it didn't look like was going to happen. James and his Dad were both military men, and in true stereotypical British style, were not ones for sharing their emotions. I think that's what the "I'm not you're Son, You're not my Father, We're just 2 grown men saying goodbye" is about, it's easier to say goodbye to someone if the emotion of them being your father isn't there. That is his real Dad in the video. James said in an interview, that he's glad that his Dad agreed to do it - because now he has a video of his Dad. His Dad did end up getting a transplant and is still alive now. Oh it might also help to know - that his Dad had previously donated one of his kidneys to someone in the past. Wait until you see songs like "Carry You Home" and "The Girl Who Never Was" ......

    • @Prozak63
      @Prozak63 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, but there was a very strong emotional bond between them. With his father being a higher ranking officer than him, when they were being deployed, his father told him that he couldn't treat him differently than the others. They were just two men...

    • @AndrewJonesMcGuire
      @AndrewJonesMcGuire 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Prozak63 well of course, we all have strong emotional bonds - it's just that the British stereotype is that we internalise those emotions - rather than showing them - which is of course super healthy and doesn't cause us any mental health problems at all 😉

  • @tundiel
    @tundiel 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

    Very emotional song indeed. It's because James is so utterly real. It was the first time his father was hearing it, and James didn't want another take done because any imperfections (his voice cracking etc) were true to the moment. His father (a kidney donor) was in end stage kidney failure. The release of this song led to a donor being found.
    Both James and his father are military veterans. James has several heartbreaking songs (No Bravery is about his experience as a soldier), but he has upbeat stuff, too. A fantastic song writer, and in person a very funny guy. Yes please to more James Blunt!
    Cheers, Eddie!

    This song of James Blunt’s, “Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying..........From my understanding, shorty after this song, a distant relative who heard of his plight, donated a kidney and he is still doing well 😊

  • @ntracefan
    @ntracefan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    James’s dad donated a kidney several years ago and when this video was filmed his father was dying from stage 4 kidney disease. None of the immediate family was a match for a kidney transplant and the end was near for his dad. A distant cousin saw the video and was tested and was a match. The cousin donated a kidney and James’s dad is doing well now .

  • @johnstrickler2238

    So, piggybacking off what a lot of people have said, basically the story is that his father had donated a kidney many years before, and got diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. There were no known living relatives that were a match to be able to provide the kidney. James Blunt and his father were both military, and the "You're not my father, I'm not your son. We're just two grown men saying goodbye" was how they said goodbye whenever they deployed.
    It ends up that this song was how they found a *very* long lost side of the family, with one person who was a match, and was able to donate a kidney in time to save his father.

    James and his father were both military men. When he was being deployed, his father would say: "You're not my son, I'm not your father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye...". This song breaks me every time I hear it. The video was shot in one take, because James wanted the emotion to be raw and genuine. His father was suffering with stage 4 Kidney disease, he had donated a kidney previously and his one kidney was working at 11% which is really bad. His father received a kidney from a distant relative that was a match, he spent all of 2020 in isolation and is still doing well 👍🏻😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    Scrolled a bit and couldn't see it but you said about the emotion and tears, apparently the whole crew were in tears during filming and James' farther just piped up, what's wrong with everyone, I'm still here. I still have my dad here and it gets me every time, can't believe it's easier for those that have lost theirs.
    BTW, his real name is Blount, not sure if it was James himself or the record company that decided to drop the O but Blount sounded too posh or something.

    This song and the story behind it made a lot of people sign up to the donor register around the world and his father Colonol Charles Blunt was saved as were many other people around the world. So it literally chased the monsters away for all of them. All the proceeds from this song were donated to the Help the Heroes charity of great Britain which helps take care of our veterans and their families as both Colonol Charles Blunt and Captain James Blunt were both in the British army.
    The line saying i am not your not , your not my father we are just two grown men saying goodbye is something that they would say to each other before deployments.

    Both James and his Dad served in the Royal British Army. When James was being deployed to Kosovo, his Dad's goodbye to him was, "You're not my son. I'm not your father. We're just two grown men saying goodbye!" James flipped that in this tribute to his dad.
