Merriam Style I discovered you channel just a week ago and I really like your videos. I would love it if you could put together a set of little black dress images for each Kibbe type. It would be so useful to have a visual reference like this and clearly see the the difference in silhouette between different types.
AMAZING VIDEO IDEA: What if you did a video showing how more "Yin" body types (Romantics, Soft Gamine, Theatrical Romantics) can obtain edgier "dark" looks and how more "Yang" body types can obtain daintier "cute" looks without compromising their lines. Basically, what you did with Lolita/Soft Dramatic but expanded to different body types. Personally, as a Romantic I always disliked the stereotypical look. I enjoy edgier sophisticated styles.
I just have the exact question! I'm soft classic so I look better in minimal and symetric styles with slightly romantic (Ying) lines. I like the misterious and endgy kinda look too, but I don't know how to achive it.
Here's a question I ALWAYS think about when I watch Kibbe videos: why do celebrities so often wear the "wrong" lines or styles that don't flatter their body types, when they have professional stylists who are supposed to be experts? Why do so many stylists make these mistakes and misguide these celebrities? (Not that they don't ever pick out their outfits themselves, but they're usually guided by people who manage their public image!)

Yay! Another Kibbe video! 🙌🙏👏 I love the Kibbe system! People started to tell me how beautiful I am and how young I look. I never felt beautiful before, but now I do! I threw away all other clothes now 😀 I can't believe I dressed for another body type my whole life! 😓

When I first did the kibbe test on Aly’s Channel, I thought I was Theatrical Romantic but your videos made me doubt that result. Your emphasis on the bone structure and not on the individual features made me reconsider the results of the test. I took the test again and one more time seems leaning towards theatrical romantic or classic but I was not still convinced. I focused on going to a store and try different outfits. I also observed that my hands and feet are large, sharp compared to my body and my shoulders are blunt and wider than my hips so I thought soft natural?... I am 5’ 2” but I realize that I was made to be taller (I was a very sick child and that may have affected my growth). I tried Soft Natural lines and EUREKA!...I look so much more sophisticated!. I like to mix theatrical romantic lines (because I have some curves) but now I know that if I pair them with soft natural lines, I look more put together. You’re awesome, Merriam!💞
My best friend is in the same boat as you and she too was confused for a long time...she’s 5’2 with longer arms, slightly broad squarish hands and feet, medium to large bone structure for her height. She’s very pear shaped though, wide and fleshy on the waist, hips and thighs, not very fleshy elsewhere but she has pretty good muscle tone. Narrower shoulders. Due to her narrower shoulders and pear shape, she thought she was romantic at first, but those lines looked frumpy on her. Waist emphasis with belts only cut her in half and made her look wider. Then she tried Soft Natural, and looks really great with softer waist emphasis and slightly elongated lines, some drape and flow. I think the width of the frame (whether the width is coming from shoulders or hips) is important to consider.
Could you please do more videos on breaking Kibbe’s rules? You have done one on dramatic and soft dramatic some time ago and I thought the topic was so interesting! I would love to see you extend it and include the rest of the body types as well.

That was a great video as usual! A clear demonstration of what works and what does not. Other subscribers already mentioned that since the examples are typically of fancy clothes on the red carpet. The reason for this is obvious - these are celebrities, they are constantly under a "photo attack" and it helps to look for the same person in different outfits rather than search thousands of stock photos and not find the same person twice. Yet, I would be interested in a specialization series for a casual style and a business look. I wonder if looking at the outfits of famous politicians might help with the latter, for example.
Id love to see a Lolita style for all the body types video one day!! As a flamboyant gamine I always felt like the dresses looked a little awkward on me but I don’t know why .-.
I feel like a cute tomboy lolita style would look great on a gamine. Like a kind of old fashioned overalls with chocolate and cookies design with high socks etc and maybe a little cap would look so cute
I'm flamboyant gamine and all my best coords make me look cute but imposing. I've seen online where flamboyant gamines are described like miniature dramatics and it's never more evident than when I wear lolita coords that suit me.
My daughter and I just went through this exercise and we exchanged SO MANY pieces that looked good on the other. I think sometimes we get bored of our usual styles and try others and that’s where the mistake lies. Kibbe has helped us revamp our wardrobe so so much
I like what you are saying about how things look on you. Flamboyant natural models wear these loose, "relaxed" shirts. When I, as a Theatrical Romantic, put on such a shirt, it can look not "relaxed," but "poofy!"
Elektra you know, as a SN certain relaxed shirts look bad, and some look perfect. You may want to try different fabrics, sizes and neck lines to be sure.
Hi Merriam! If you'd make a video about interesting outfits for a classic Kibbe type, that would be great! As a classic, I really struggle with finding clothes that not only fit my body, but also don't resemble 'typical teacher's style'. I'm 24, tall, quite slim and feel a bit dissapointed with classic outfit options that I find...like is there really nothing more interesting? Search on pinterest for Kibbe classic-you’ll find some really inspiring boards with lots of casual styles. This has really helped pick and choose classic (I’m a soft) styles more authoritatively when shopping.

I would love to see you expand to a series on alternative style with Kibbe types. As an example I personally wear Retro 40's and 50's Styles and would love to see how I could best compliment my lines (I think I am Soft Dramatic) while maintaining my vintage style. But expanding on Lolita and looking at styles like Goth, Punk etc. would also be of interest. I understand that if you "know your lines" you should be able to do this on your own, but it is nice to see examples and an outside perspective.

kaidawisteria yes exactly! It’s really difficult to tell the difference between these two types...Sometimes I think I am one or the other. Also I have the impression that the clothes suggested in Pinterest for soft classics tend to be a bit old fashioned and I cannot find good examples for soft classics which are more modern. For soft naturals there are better examples in Pinterest because the casual looks are more trendy and go well with the natural family. So it’s difficult to compare these two types as I don’t find good examples for soft classics.
It would be amazing if you could do anything about flamboyant natural, it's so hard to find anything about them as it seems to be a very uncommon bodytype! :))
I wonder if a style like Atelier Boz would look like on a dramatic? The shapes are so big and defined. Or Aterlier Pierrot style for Soft dramatic. Or Sheglit. Innocent world style has big shapes as well. Sometimes prints are more graphic so that could compliment a dramatic yang bone structure. It would be nice if someone made a kibbe video or post with photo references. Don't forget about shoes. They can be almost pointy like victorian style boots, be round like tea parties, or almond shaped that are round but taper a little at the toe.
6:47 Rihanna looks visually stunning in TR lines (her body), but the dress looks restrictive and uncomfortable on her, like it doesn’t complement her spunky personality or her high energy presence. The SN/N/FN style may look a wee bit oversized but it suits her personality I feel, shows off her long legs, hair looks great...and she looks happy, vibrant and free compared to the pic in TR outfit (where she looks uncomfortable...also the pale colors of the dress and make-up look wrong on her...much too restrained and too soft). Wonder if I’m the only one who thinks this.

I'm thinking of Audrey Hepburn's famous Breakfast at Tiffany's wardrobe (over the top, glamorous, feminine), and it has a lot of flamboyant gamine elements. The high necklines, made even higher with oversized necklaces that sat tight on the throat up. Dramaticly oversized sunglasses and hats. Oversized geometric earrings. Her orange coat visually cut her arms halfway between wrist and elbow, and formed a geometric rather than long or curvy line, but she had a tight dress under it, it looked very glam. All her dresses sort of cut her arms off at the shoulder so there wasn't a flowing neck-shoulder line but clearly delineated body parts. Even her dress made of a bedsheet cuts a geometric figure and is relatively high-necked for a one-shoulder situation. Bright rich colors like the orange coat and pink party dress. Cigarette pants with a big fluffy sweatshirt as a casual look, and tiny cropped fringe. Her big updos were essentially large geometric shapes with awkward little baby fringe. Seems like these ideas could travel into modern fashion without being quite so prim as Audrey (even though she was playing a call girl, but whatever). This may be the first time anyone has compared Kelly Osborne with Audrey Hepburn in any way but... she does a lot of the same things with her clothes in more modern ways.
St. Rhinocéros Thanks I love these tips! I tend to fake a waist with very large oversized unique belts. I also enjoy wearing form fitting mini or midi dresses with very long coats and jackets to break things up a bit and I never say no to bright colors 🤗 Now I’m definitely going to purchase some chunky necklaces and capes so I can use these tips. Unfortunately as much as I love oversized sunglasses they always just look too overwhelming on me. Thanks again for the ideas ❤️
I love tailored (not super short) shorts in a heavier fabric for an elegant or classy look for FG. I wear them in a slightly lighter weight fabric in the summer and in tweed/leather in the winter with wool or patterned black tights and ankle booties and a knee length coat. I definitely agree with looking at Audrey Hepburn’s photos. I also like mixing textures and patterns in an outfit and keeping the outfit monochrome/tonal for a more elegant but feminine look. Also, having the top and shoes be slightly more chunky/oversized (not FN oversized, just very slightly slouchy) and then the bottom be more fitted or the inverse (top and shoes more fitted, bottom slightly oversized or flowy) will make the outfit more modern and elegant. Natural fabrics and higher quality fabric will drape better so it is less likely to come across as cutesy. Make sure your clothes are tailored to you but not tight or uncomfortable, I buy most of my clothes used and then spend money on tailoring to make sure they fit well. Audrey Coyne and Dearly Bethany on TH-cam are both gamines I think and they’re both super feminine and elegant.
I'm a dramatic with a few elements of natural. Why are belts never recommended? Only if I wear a long top over a long skirt, I usually belt the outfit, to give a bit more finished look..especially now that fall's here. Looks great under a jacket. What do you think?
The main problem with lolita fashion on western bodies is not kibbe type, it's that the clothes are made for 5'1" bodies with smaller breasts and in general just very thin and the dresses are one-size-fits-all, no sizes. I speak from experience as a 5'7" soft dramatic that the clothes are just too short and the bodices don't have much curve to them and in the west we are on average much larger of frame than the japanese market for which they are made. When you compared the two white girls (the second set of pics), the one on the right that was "better" is just thinner and shorter so the dress fits. I know the exact dress she is wearing from Angelic Pretty and for it to fit her like that she isn't very tall. She also doesn't have big boobs so she doesn't turn the bodice into "boob loaf" as we in lolita community call it when your boobs fill up a whole bodice in an awkward way because it was cut too flat for your shape. I appreciate what you did here but there aren't that many companies that make lolita dresses and you can't just go get a soft-dramatic friendly one. The dresses also only come in one size so you can't pick the size. Basically we all know we don't look fabulous but we wear it for ourselves, not for if we objectively look our best. Every single girl you said looks better is just shorter. Especially the japanese girls, they have strict model standards and none of them are taller than 5'3"
I'm finding it hard to connect my kibbe (romantic) with my essence or style which is natural (natural colors, minimalist clothing with natural sometimes tribal essence colorful jewelry and I don't look good with scarves. I have a short neck and very full bust. I love Jean's and tshirts and don't like heels, so it's hard to look dainty like a romantic especially now that I'm older and not as slim. It's hard to find cropped pants these days that tapper around my calves or ankles without being to wide...making my already extra skinny calves and ankles look ridiculous next to my full thighs.
Do you consider Hilary duff and Kat Dennings soft natural or romantic? They both look very womanly and have lush body. But they also look slightly wide and not too delicate.
Merriam, I absolutely love your videos, and I think your amazing! I also have a question for you. I'm a romantic, i'm short, rounded, tiny shoulders, wider bones, short arms and legs, very delicate facial features, etc. But my style is very very different from the romantic lines that David Kibbe recomends, even though I "technically" might look my best in them, it's just not me. I like long draped clothing, long shapeless dresses, long wide pants, big sweaters, sharp edges, etc- kind of the opposite of the romantic lines. My style icons are Liv Tyler (natural) and Emma Stone (classic), I love their kind of relaxed, chic look. And in my own opinion, I look kind of good in that type of clothing (natural/soft natural lines). But i'm not sure... So I guess my question is; how do I wear/can I wear for example more natural lines as a romantic? How can I incorporate that type of style, without looking like i'm wearing... a bag and while still looking good? you should watch my video called 'break kibbe's rules' (which isn't a good title!) but it's about how dramatic and soft dramatic can wear different lines to achieve a different look.
Jade Sham more separates tops and pants. If you still want to work the romantic angle, pants and jeans should be fitted and high-waisted and tops should be fitted. Replace the fitted tops for tucked in tees and sneakers. As a Romantic (with ingenue/gamine or the youthful/high-spirited aspects), wearing a tee with something seen as masculine ( menswear color or comic-book related) gives me a tomboy look with jeans. It also gets me mistaken for being much younger than I am! Baggy clothes also makes you look boyish. Be careful with this though. Too baggy could make you look like a slob
Ooh ooh I want to try! If I were to imagine a generic T-shirt, jeans, sneakers and ponytail look (which seems "tomboy" to me, I guess), here's how I would alter it to flatter a romantic: open the neckline of the T-shirt to be more rounded and crop it (or messily tuck it) to high natural waist level. Make the material either thin and flowy cotton such as worn vintage tees, or thick and stretchy (not skin-tight but closely fitted). Some sort of tie-dye or ombre could soften the look without making it specifically feminine-soft. Sleeves closer to cap length, elbow or 3/4 to be proportional to small romantic skeleton. Jeans high-waisted, cropped or cuffed high on the ankle. You could do one of those retro 50s dungarees looks, cuffed boyfriend style as long as it doesn't sit lower on the hips, mom jeans. Sneakers not super ginormous. But maybe with a thicker sole for height. Or go for keds type thin sneakers that are closer to ballerina flats in proportion. Ponytail not neat and slicked back, but rather so baby hairs make a halo or do a messy bun so the hair is soft around the face. Or whatever the analogous look would be for your hair. Also fitted shorter blazer type jackets. Blazers forever! You could do an edgy leather jacket but it would need to end higher up so it hits at or slightly above your natural waist. Otherwise it'll drag you down.

I don't think she's a dramatic classic, either. She has a very different vibe from the icons of this type, such as Jackie O, Sela Ward, Demi Moore, Marcia Cross, Kristin Scott, etc. Nina doesn't look good in very unconstructed garments - I agree - but she does look good in layering, soft cardigans, floppy hats and long, flowy waves which are probably the worst possible hairstyle for a DC. In my opinion, she has too much yin to be a dramatic classic.
I clicked because I am into lolita style and I am annoyed by the woman asking about her daughter... Geez, she should mind her own business. By the way, I appreciate your intention drawing those pictures, but they don't quite fit into the lolita style. However, I liked your analysis about those girls you showed. You should join the daily lolita groups in social media so you could get real examples of actual outfits instead of just googling them, because those outfits you shared weren't the best. I think I am a soft classic and even though I didn't know the kibbe types until the last few months, I unconsciously mixed some elements of my kibbe type with my personal aesthetic while wearing lolita. The reason for this is obvious - these are celebrities, they are constantly under a "photo attack" and it helps to look for the same person in different outfits rather than search thousands of stock photos and not find the same person twice. Yet, I would be interested in a specialization series for a casual style and a business look. I wonder if looking at the outfits of famous politicians might help with the latter, for example.
Most actors play rolls that usually don't attend red carpet events all the time. One could look for those pictures instead.

I like what you are saying about how things look on you. Flamboyant natural models wear these loose, "relaxed" shirts. When I, as a Theatrical Romantic, put on such a shirt, it can look not "relaxed," but "poofy!"

Elektra you know, as a SN certain relaxed shirts look bad, and some look perfect. You may want to try different fabrics, sizes and neck lines to be sure.

As a classic, I really struggle with finding clothes that not only fit my body, but also don't resemble 'typical teacher's style'. Search on pinterest for Kibbe classic-you’ll find some really inspiring boards with lots of casual styles. This has really helped pick and choose classic (I’m a soft) styles more authoritatively when shopping.

I would love to see you expand to a series on alternative style with Kibbe types. As an example I personally wear Retro 40's and 50's Styles and would love to see how I could best compliment my lines (I think I am Soft Dramatic) while maintaining my vintage style. But expanding on Lolita and looking at styles like Goth, Punk etc. would also be of interest. I understand that if you "know your lines" you should be able to do this on your own, but it is nice to see examples and an outside perspective.

kaidawisteria yes exactly! It’s really difficult to tell the difference between these two types...Sometimes I think I am one or the other. Also I have the impression that the clothes suggested in Pinterest for soft classics tend to be a bit old fashioned and I cannot find good examples for soft classics which are more modern. For soft naturals there are better examples in Pinterest because the casual looks are more trendy and go well with the natural family. So it’s difficult to compare these two types as I don’t find good examples for soft classics.

I wonder if a style like Atelier Boz would look like on a dramatic? The shapes are so big and defined. Or Aterlier Pierrot style for Soft dramatic. Or Sheglit. Innocent world style has big shapes as well. Sometimes prints are more graphic so that could compliment a dramatic yang bone structure. It would be nice if someone made a kibbe video or post with photo references. Don't forget about shoes. They can be almost pointy like victorian style boots, be round like tea parties, or almond shaped that are round but taper a little at the toe.
6:47 Rihanna looks visually stunning in TR lines (her body), but the dress looks restrictive and uncomfortable on her, like it doesn’t complement her spunky personality or her high energy presence. The SN/N/FN style may look a wee bit oversized but it suits her personality I feel, shows off her long legs, hair looks great...and she looks happy, vibrant and free compared to the pic in TR outfit (where she looks uncomfortable...also the pale colors of the dress and make-up look wrong on her...much too restrained and too soft). Wonder if I’m the only one who thinks this.

I'm thinking of Audrey Hepburn's famous Breakfast at Tiffany's wardrobe (over the top, glamorous, feminine), and it has a lot of flamboyant gamine elements. The high necklines, made even higher with oversized necklaces that sat tight on the throat up. Dramaticly oversized sunglasses and hats. Oversized geometric earrings. Her orange coat visually cut her arms halfway between wrist and elbow, and formed a geometric rather than long or curvy line, but she had a tight dress under it, it looked very glam. All her dresses sort of cut her arms off at the shoulder so there wasn't a flowing neck-shoulder line but clearly delineated body parts. Even her dress made of a bedsheet cuts a geometric figure and is relatively high-necked for a one-shoulder situation. Bright rich colors like the orange coat and pink party dress. Cigarette pants with a big fluffy sweatshirt as a casual look, and tiny cropped fringe. Her big updos were essentially large geometric shapes with awkward little baby fringe. Seems like these ideas could travel into modern fashion without being quite so prim as Audrey (even though she was playing a call girl, but whatever). This may be the first time anyone has compared Kelly Osborne with Audrey Hepburn in any way but... she does a lot of the same things with her clothes in more modern ways.
St. Rhinocéros Thanks I love these tips! I tend to fake a waist with very large oversized unique belts. I also enjoy wearing form fitting mini or midi dresses with very long coats and jackets to break things up a bit and I never say no to bright colors 🤗 Now I’m definitely going to purchase some chunky necklaces and capes so I can use these tips. I love tailored (not super short) shorts in a heavier fabric for an elegant or classy look for FG. I wear them in a slightly lighter weight fabric in the summer and in tweed/leather in the winter with wool or patterned black tights and ankle booties and a knee length coat. I definitely agree with looking at Audrey Hepburn’s photos. I also like mixing textures and patterns in an outfit and keeping the outfit monochrome/tonal for a more elegant but feminine look. Also, having the top and shoes be slightly more chunky/oversized (not FN oversized, just very slightly slouchy) and then the bottom be more fitted or the inverse (top and shoes more fitted, bottom slightly oversized or flowy) will make the outfit more modern and elegant.
Natural fabrics and higher quality fabric will drape better so it is less likely to come across as cutesy. Make sure your clothes are tailored to you but not tight or uncomfortable, I buy most of my clothes used and then spend money on tailoring to make sure they fit well.
Audrey Coyne and Dearly Bethany on TH-cam are both gamines I think and they’re both super feminine and elegant.
I'm a dramatic with a few elements of natural. Why are belts never recommended? Only if I wear a long top over a long skirt, I usually belt the outfit, to give a bit more finished look..especially now that fall's here. Looks great under a jacket. What do you think?

The main problem with lolita fashion on western bodies is not kibbe type, it's that the clothes are made for 5'1" bodies with smaller breasts and in general just very thin and the dresses are one-size-fits-all, no sizes. I speak from experience as a 5'7" soft dramatic that the clothes are just too short and the bodices don't have much curve to them and in the west we are on average much larger of frame than the japanese market for which they are made. When you compared the two white girls (the second set of pics), the one on the right that was "better" is just thinner and shorter so the dress fits. I know the exact dress she is wearing from Angelic Pretty and for it to fit her like that she isn't very tall. She also doesn't have big boobs so she doesn't turn the bodice into "boob loaf" as we in lolita community call it when your boobs fill up a whole bodice in an awkward way because it was cut too flat for your shape. I appreciate what you did here but there aren't that many companies that make lolita dresses and you can't just go get a soft-dramatic friendly one. The dresses also only come in one size so you can't pick the size. Basically we all know we don't look fabulous but we wear it for ourselves, not for if we objectively look our best. Every single girl you said looks better is just shorter. Especially the japanese girls, they have strict model standards and none of them are taller than 5'3"
I'm finding it hard to connect my kibbe (romantic) with my essence or style which is natural (natural colors, minimalist clothing with natural sometimes tribal essence colorful jewelry and I don't look good with scarves. I have a short neck and very full bust. I love Jean's and tshirts and don't like heels, so it's hard to look dainty like a romantic especially now that I'm older and not as slim. It's hard to find cropped pants these days that tapper around my calves or ankles without being to wide...making my already extra skinny calves and ankles look ridiculous next to my full thighs.
Do you consider Hilary duff and Kat Dennings soft natural or romantic? They both look very womanly and have lush body. But they also look slightly wide and not too delicate.

I also have a question for you. I'm a romantic, i'm short, rounded, tiny shoulders, wider bones, short arms and legs, very delicate facial features, etc. But my style is very very different from the romantic lines that David Kibbe recomends, even though I "technically" might look my best in them, it's just not me. I like long draped clothing, long shapeless dresses, long wide pants, big sweaters, sharp edges, etc- kind of the opposite of the romantic lines. My style icons are Liv Tyler (natural) and Emma Stone (classic), I love their kind of relaxed, chic look. And in my own opinion, I look kind of good in that type of clothing (natural/soft natural lines). But i'm not sure...
So I guess my question is; how do I wear/can I wear for example more natural lines as a romantic? How can I incorporate that type of style, without looking like i'm wearing... a bag and while still looking good? Because sometimes I feel like it looks good, but the kibbe-system is telling me different.

Jade Sham more separates tops and pants. If you still want to work the romantic angle, pants and jeans should be fitted and high-waisted and tops should be fitted. Replace the fitted tops for tucked in tees and sneakers.
As a Romantic (with ingenue/gamine or the youthful/high-spirited aspects), wearing a tee with something seen as masculine ( menswear color or comic-book related) gives me a tomboy look with jeans. It also gets me mistaken for being much younger than I am! Baggy clothes also makes you look boyish. Be careful with this though. Too baggy could make you look like a slob
Ooh ooh I want to try! If I were to imagine a generic T-shirt, jeans, sneakers and ponytail look (which seems "tomboy" to me, I guess), here's how I would alter it to flatter a romantic: open the neckline of the T-shirt to be more rounded and crop it (or messily tuck it) to high natural waist level. Make the material either thin and flowy cotton such as worn vintage tees, or thick and stretchy (not skin-tight but closely fitted). Some sort of tie-dye or ombre could soften the look without making it specifically feminine-soft. Sleeves closer to cap length, elbow or 3/4 to be proportional to small romantic skeleton.
Jeans high-waisted, cropped or cuffed high on the ankle. You could do one of those retro 50s dungarees looks, cuffed boyfriend style as long as it doesn't sit lower on the hips, mom jeans.
Sneakers not super ginormous. But maybe with a thicker sole for height. Or go for keds type thin sneakers that are closer to ballerina flats in proportion.
Ponytail not neat and slicked back, but rather so baby hairs make a halo or do a messy bun so the hair is soft around the face. Or whatever the analogous look would be for your hair.
Also fitted shorter blazer type jackets. Blazers forever! You could do an edgy leather jacket but it would need to end higher up so it hits at or slightly above your natural waist. Otherwise it'll drag you down.

I don't think she's a dramatic classic, either. She has a very different vibe from the icons of this type, such as Jackie O, Sela Ward, Demi Moore, Marcia Cross, Kristin Scott, etc. Nina doesn't look good in very unconstructed garments - I agree - but she does look good in layering, soft cardigans, floppy hats and long, flowy waves which are probably the worst possible hairstyle for a DC. In my opinion, she has too much yin to be a dramatic classic.

I think I am a soft classic and even though I didn't know the kibbe types until the last few months, I unconsciously mixed some elements of my kibbe type with my personal aesthetic while wearing lolita. I just know what suits me and what doesn't. Thanks for youe analysis!
