    It's kind of amazing to me (in my opinion) that most skin undertone analysis shies away from pointing out the hue differences in black skin because it seems to be the _easiest_ skin colour to type by undertone. I can clearly see the contrast in the different undertones in some of my black friends and colleagues best. It's very easy to see the yellow undertone peeking out from the brown skin, the sharp blue, the muted blue and yellows. Thanks for the video and for highlighting this undertone diversity to make it easier for others x

      @merriamstyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      oh yeah, more pigment = more to see and more difference in general, just as you say! but also, more pigment means the eye can pick up on more, which means each color looks better, even deep undertones' worst colors look better on them than they do on nicole kidman. this is probably why color analysts just say good enough. and also because historically, color analysis has been white centric. so the old systems throw everyone into "deep something".

    Yesss that winter Asian example with the slightly reddish grey skin looks EXACTLY like me. Having such a rare skin tone buying foundation is such a pain. Even though I'm not extremely pale people can get the wrong assumption of me being pale because of the cool undertone, and then recommend me with the lightest brightest shades which look horrible on my face...This is the FIRST time I see my skin tone gets represented in a beauty video and THANKS SO MUCH!!!

    Where have you been all my life?!!!
    This is exactly the problem I have faced that has made shopping a nightmare.
    Because I am African I have often gotten away with wearing bright yellow dresses, yet my best colour is 100% Royal or Jewel blue.
    A friend gifted me an emerald green dress that I would never have picked for myself and it looked amazing on me.
    I confess, I only wear fuschia ocassionally because I get so many complements I thought I was attracting too much attention. 🤦🏾‍♀️
    I'm so so glad I found you.
    Thank you once again!

    This is so helpful! I am an inuit and I have never been able to tell my undertone. I tan so easily and so I thought I must have a warm undertone, but yellows and oranges never looked good on me and bright red/orangey lipsticks always looked separate and extremely bright against my skin. For a while I thought I could be olive, however I have absolutely no green in my skin tone. No! That’s because I’m cool and radiant! That’s something I would have never considered if I hadn’t seen this video. Also growing up I hated pink so I have never bothered to try on pink purpley lipsticks until today. And it looks so. good. on me. Wow. It’s literally the first time in my life that I found a bright color that looked natural on me. Thank you so much!

      Agreed. Lucy Liu is constantly typed as cool and bright elsewhere. But I guess every ons has their own system? I just wonder if subjectivity can be achieved in such subjects cuz of how different perceptions can be especially for people who's skin color can't be predominantly concretely typed

  • @secretalias2264

    lol I could never colour type myself cause I look pretty good in every colour. It must be because my tan skin is downplaying the incompatibility. Now that I think of it, I honestly don't know what colours I look best in. I always thought if it didn't look too loud or too sickly it was fine. Time to set the bar higher.

    • @shireads2954
      @shireads2954 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It sounds like you're confusing winter and summer. In Merriam's system, winter is cool and muted, while summer is cool and bright. So the royal blue would suggest that you are summer, just as looking bad in grey reinforces the idea that you are not a winter. However you look good an spring colors, and bad in fuchsia, so you may want to start at the beginning and find out if your are warm or cool. We already know that you are bright. If you're warm, you're sping. If you're cool your summer. So try the draping method with a bright blue and a bright yellow. See what happens. Hope that helps.

      Hi Michelle--interesting, I totally believe they exist. But I do want to say that warmer skin tones often look better in everything because we associate warmth with health, so an east asian who is warm may be mistyped as cool because they simply look good in everything, especially with a bit of a tan. I think true cool east asian skin tones are very uncommon. Could you give some celebrity examples of some cooler East Asians? It took me hours to find just two.

    • @Frasianfamily
      @Frasianfamily 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Merriam Style I don’t know that many Asian celebrities, especially growing up the the US. But just from my own experience, most of my entire Chinese family is cool toned. We all look awful in warm tones and have fair skin tones that freckle rather than tan. I tried Bobbi Brown foundation once and everyone said I looked “tired” that day. It was way too yellow on me. I think Heart Evangelista is cool, not sure about bright though.

      I’m the same too! Warm colour in clothing is awful on me but I feel good in warm peach makeup and some warm reds, but not brick reds. At the same time I also feel good in cool tones especially nude pinks and mauvy soft pinks and cool cherry/berry reds in lipstick… but medium saturated rosy pinks don’t work at all and feel garish.. I wonder why that is? I think it’s really hard to fit in a box.. though cool olive colours and for sure mine.
      It would be great to analyse makeup and skin tone, as I think there is more to it with contrast colours and colours that are harmonious being potentially good.

    I finally know I’m closer to cool muted, mistaken as a warm neutral. Being of Japanese, Native American and English, I look sort of medium warm, but I’m truly closer to a light olive. When matched at a store, the foundations people try to match me are always too yellow. According to-you, I’m much more olive or cool mute. I have both green and blue veins, wear silver and gold jewelry. People always think I should wear red lips, with my dark hair and Asian descent, but it looks terrible in me! I look good in peachy nude lips, not fuschia, or red. I wore a blush wedding dress because white did t look as good.

    Literally! I can't tell you how much I love this video. I paid someone to tell me my season and they came back with dark winter even though I showed pictures of me in bright cool cobalt, highlighter yellow, and bright pink, and I look really good. I was convinced I am not a dark winter because super deep shades like pine and dark purple make me look super sallow or way more muted than I am. I think many color analysis people don't know how to handle nonwhite clients. They just assume dark and olive = deep winter.

      They told me I must be a dark winter too, I'm Turkish with light sandy skin, black eyes and brows, brown eyes. But dark winter colours make me look too mature and kill of my bubbly self and sweet fine face. They feel heavy on me!

I now know why I usually get compliments when I wear reds, oranges & yellows, but not when I wear blues or greens. Btw, do you mind sharing your ethnicity? I love your color analyses, and this one too. But I somewhat disagree about your comment on two dresses, the lime yellow ones on Nicole Kidman and Julian Moore, I think they look fantastic, despite your points, which I all agree with. I think the reason those dresses still work on them is because of the warmth of their red hair. Their hair color just goes so well with that color that whatever that color does to their skin pales in comparison. They look super edgy and fashionable. They've both used very dark red lipsticks, and I think that is enough to fix the negative effects of the yellow color on their faces.

    I think Nicole Kidman looks amazing in that mustard/yellow dress, of the four I think Alicia looks the worst because it's such a neon yellow and makes her look a bit grey.
    I am a redhead and I look great in mustard and rusty red/orange (much like my hair color) but royal blue, bright lemon yellow, peachy pink and light grey really washes me out. It's like I am in between all the time, gold and silver looks equally good on me also. My friends always say I am warm and think I look best in autumn colors, but since I have red hair and very light skin (never get a tan) I'm a summer according to your system.

      I hear you! Sometimes my blonde friends have darker skin than me (I have Nazanin's coloring). The point of this video was to show that it's really the color balances of the skin pigment that matters rather than how much pigment there is, and having even deeper skin tones would have made my point even better (not to mention made the video even more inclusive). You could take a look at my video on Lupita and one of my subscribers who's very light--it's called "two ladies, same best colors". So don't completely put aside a colour. If you are confused between why a colour oppositive to your undertone looks good on you, it is perhaps a universal one.

I don't know...still a little confused. I tried the silver and gold metal thing but I can't tell which one looks better on me. I will say though from personal experience I have a cool, deep kinda vivid but not too much, dark blue top and it looks gorgeous on me. Interesting thought on the asian girl but I think that she considers the yellow her best color. East asian cultures often see paleness as an ideal and she did look much paler there. I personally thought it looked great on her.

I'm assuming I'm warm but the bright and delicate pallets seem a bit tricky. I pick my colors by putting my hand next to them. My skin will switch on and off like a light bulb. Hahaha

    Merriam Style, can a “ summer” person pull off bright almost neon green? Because I identified myself as summer (since I look great in royal blue and hot pink or fuscia) but I also look great in a very bright spring green. I say it’s a spring green because it looks like the color of new grass. I wonder if this green is merely my “yellow” as a summer. I’ve gotten compliments whenever I wear this bright kind of green. Also, I have to be careful with yellows because they look “meh” on me but some yellows like turmeric yellow look fine. Do I still sound like a summer to you?

    Thank you for this! It was really helpful! I hope you do this for all the seasons eventually. My problem is that I know I'm a warm undertone, and I look really good in both bright and muted colors, but usually not in pure colors. For instance, bright mustard yellow is my signature color. But I also look amazing in army green and dark but bright teal. I hate how I look in pure yellow or muted peach. What does this mean?! I also look amazing in hot pink, which is bright and cool. I usually just dress in fall colors (not necessarily an autumn palette, but the actual seasonal colors). I almost feel like light vs. dark is more important for my skin that bright vs. muted. I'm just confused. Is this because I have a dark skin tone?

    • @shay6153
      @shay6153 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this is silly but as a Black woman, I believe personally that colors looking bad is really a case of what do people notice more when looking at us or a photo. Our deep and lovely skin is actually the reason fashion designers put super dark models in beyond bright clothing for photos, because our skin actually makes the colors look good while the colors themselves don't do much to our pigment. It's possible your deep skin is the Reason you don't look bad at all in cool pink. If you look better in bright blue than bright yellow though you'll prob have your answer.

    Hi everyone! I am a bit confused about smth, hope someone can help. I am definetly a cool undertone, I don't have to wear yellow or orange to look sick or dead, it's enought to juat stand next to a splash of wa color... But I can't, for the life of me, figure out if I'm bright or muted... I tried putting on bright blues, bluish greens, reds, black and white vs muted blues, greens, dark burgundy reds and greys... I seem fine in all of them, as long as they are cool. I even tried the lipstick trick with a bright red and a muted pink and burgundy... all look equally ok to me. Is there such a thing as a neutral level of brightness? I find it hard to believe I am that weird :)) Or am I missing smth? Is there some other way to test it? Thanks in advance!

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ioana, I believe there is a neutral level of brightness actually. :) I don't think it's weird. Most people will lean toward muted or bright, but how bright/muted you are is a continuum, vs how warm you are vs how cool you are--there's a definite point where you'll have more yellow or more blue in the skin. But the chroma of the skin is determined by how bright that warm or cool is. So one could be extremely muted (the more muted you are, the harder it would be to tell if you look better in muted warm or muted cool), or you could be in the middle like you describe, or you could tend toward being much brighter. It's also possible you're just having trouble telling because it's a bit difficult to be objective. Muted/bright is the more difficult thing to tell, usually. ;)
