  • The GMT400 console is nice enough, sure, but a little undersized. The GMT800 console adapts nicely to the OBS trucks, sure; but I also need a place for a decent subwoofer in my truck. Follow along for how I modified the GMT800 console to fit my needs.

    I've done a lot of projects along these lines since the 90's. I appreciate your ingenuity and work ethic. I just have a few suggestions. You really don't need to do all that predrilling and screwing to assemble the MDF. Just glue it up and shoot some brads to hold things together until the glue does it's job. That's just a lot of extra work and hardware. Second, cut the speaker hole before assembly and use a router and circle jig. You'll never do that cut with a jig saw again. You might consider dropping a small 400 watt inverter so you can get 110v to the back for other power options.

    • @rockymtnredneck4888
      @rockymtnredneck4888  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I first learned to do car stereo in the 90s as well. I appreciate your suggestions and agree with most of them. I don't have a circle jig for the simple reason that I'm not building sub boxes all that often at all. I am also showing that any dude with basic tools can build this stuff, too. You don't have to have all the pro tools. I have nailers, yes. I still prefer the precision of drill and screw. It's just a personal preference on a project that is on my own time. For production? Yes, absolutely faster to use brads.

    I did a very similar sub install in a 2012 Tahoe, except I pointed the 10" JL Audio woofer downward (I cant remember why), 1.5 inches recessed with bass shooting out a gap in the front, also removed the carpet below the woofer to free up even more space for sound to escape. I loved it!! Totally freed up the cargo area. Sound quality was very good, and had plenty of thump. Only one negative, the rear seat passengers couldn't really hear or feel it as much as the front. I guess that's a positive if you have small children in the back. Anyway I was very happy with it while sitting in the front seats

    • @rockymtnredneck4888
      @rockymtnredneck4888  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As I’m buckling my little ones in the far back seat, the bass is noticeable even back there. I went forward with my sub as that was the way that best fit given size and console usage considerations.

    • @edjackson4389
      @edjackson4389 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rockymtnredneck4888 It wasn't silent in the back of course, but when the gain and phase were optimized for the front seats, the bass in the rear was lacking a bit. Not a big deal, I just thought I'd mention it since I never had that with any rear mounted sub box

    Great video, impressive work!
    That JB Weld Plastic Bonder is some amazing stuff. I recently did some very extensive testing using most available 'plastic epoxy' adhesives and that Plastic Bonder surpassed all my tests.
    Im using it to make a custom cup holder for my console. Using the actual insert from a 13-15 Accord and a flip up cover from an Audi Q8. Ive had to make the Audi cover much larger to fit over the Accord cupholder. Some very surgical style cutting and bonding.
    But safe to say it was successful thanks to the plastics bonder. I then backed up all my adhesive with thick layer of regular JB weld for strength.
    The things we do for 'custom' ...
    Cheers!

    PL premium glue will take care of any cracks and air leak spaces no problem just FYI for next time.
    Very nice job. Exactly what I need help figuring out for my truck. People aren’t creative enough today in finding locations to fit proper sized subs in vehicles. Everyone wants to put small 6.5” or 8” subs under seats, or even shallow mount 10”/12” drivers when I know good and well with some creativity in enclosure design some large motor 12” drivers could be squeezed into most vehicles.

    • @rockymtnredneck4888
      @rockymtnredneck4888  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, PL is a way to go. Fiberglass is something I normally have on hand. Yeah, I think you’re right about finding a place to fit things. That’s probably why this vid has been one of my most watched. I looked at the size of the console and what air volume I could get given the other things I needed the console for. Not even sure I have the volume for peak performance, but it does what I want it to do and that is the key for any build.

  • @jameshall4385
    @jameshall4385 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks good. I definitely want to hear how it sounds. The wood box and fiberglass should hold up great. I use my center console as a cooler. I line it with a couple of 6 mil plastic bags and I can get a twelve pack and ice in it. It will keep it cold for about twelve hours. Great video

    Since you have widened the storage compartment under the armrest, you could add some approx. 4" x 7" horizontal molle pouches to hold gear, one per side, and they seem like they would stay hidden below the opening edges of the console. Heck, maybe even toss one under the armrest itself! Thats what i plan to do with my custom console build: a molle panel under the armrest lid that will have a smaller bag, a flashlight sheath, knife sheath, multitool sheath, and smaller size admin panel that itself holds a few pens/pencils and a sleeve for 3x5 notepad.
    Just wanted to toss a friendly idea. Cheers!

    I alway run a piece of dense foam weather stripping around the perimeter to seat my subs on just to ensure they’re airtight..
    Also, just a suggestion but it’s recommended to go with a low fume silicone or similar material applied from a tube or caulking gun to finish all your inner joints with and that will ensure you’ll be airtight for the life of the sub (finish the outside how you’d like)..any concern with bigger gaps just mix a little MDF sawdust in a bit of glue to fill in the rough cuts but always run that bead of silicone around the inside and you’re good to go - the low fume you want because the fumes put off from those other epoxies you’re using can actually be harmful to the rubber and polypropylene materials used to build subwoofers.. cool box though, I’ve got a buddy who’s been talking about building a console box similar to that.

      @@saabninefive93 would be nice, right? The real rub is some of these scammers are claiming stuff that is not theirs so they can get revenue offa content they assuredly did not create.

      I never really measured them that exactly....or what measurements I did take, I didn't record. The console is an odd shape so there was a ton of cut, trial fit, cut, trial fit.

      @@MrMrBurnablunt that is the one question I get the most often, no matter what the project. Unfortunately, the answer is always no. I barely have enough time for the things I have or want to do.

    I see that you didn’t like the curve in the plastic what if you melted them together cut some excess and melt a piece on to it to make it flush
