The reason the kicker was more expensive is because there advertised wattage rating is rms witch is the real useable power. Planet audio advertises max wattage witch is not the rms or the useable power. So in turn it is actually less powerfull than the kicker. Always look for the rms rating because max wattage is always inflated and unrealistic. Max power basicly means thats the maximum it surges to in small instances of time not the actuall power it can handle
This is 100% true. I never did look at the RMS vs Max output ratings. I will however say that if the trucks were not side by side you would never notice the sound difference between them but I do truly believe the Kicker will outlive the Planet Audio.
Not to mention he's under powering them both far enough that they'll blow pretty quick (I'm sure they already have with how old the video is) unless he swapped out the factory amp aswell I'm only 5:18 into the video so I'm unsure
Yep, this is exactly what my problem is. Glad I watched this before replacing stereo. May still have to as the windshield leaked terribly when I got it but the sub is toast for sure. It'll Snap, Crackle, Pop you right out. Great video. Thanks.
Glad you found my video. My sub in the Tahoe was so annoying that it was unbearable to listen to music. What sub did you end up going with? Yeah I had an Escalade windshield leaking around the edges where the glue let go. It was badly cracked so I just had it replaced.
I just installed the Kicker on my 2002 Yukon SLT exactly as you did. Down to the same self taps. Getting the plastic flange off the front of the Kicker was the hardest part. I could hear your voice as I installed it. Ha
Heck yeah. Im glad I tried to rip off that ring to see if it would fit. I almost just packed it back up and sent it back but it fits nice. Glad you were able to get it in and now you get to enjoy having base again.
2:13 that right there, is the reason why car audio was so important to develop and evolve ALL forms of speakers, to all applications, meaning: "a harsh environment (heat, UV, vibrations, high power, harsh using) such as CARS, gave us things like subwoofer surrounds that have synthetic cloth/mesh embedded in the surround rubber/foam, and stitched surround-to-cone integration... you are welcome."
Even the door speakers are failing and falling apart. Every time you open the window if it had been raining that day water dropped on the speaker and ate out the cone and rusted out the speaker. In the 03 and up they put on a splash guard on top the door speakers. The engineers who were behind the system on these early GMT800's were not doing a great job.
@@PostalRedneck hehe true that, paper and organic materials(like in older audio gear) proved not durable enough for the harsh environment that car speakers live in, its been a while that they are using synthetic cones and pvc/butyl/rubber surrounds instead of foam, i remember my dad's 98 gst eclipse stock drivers (infinity audio) they shocked me about their built quality and new materials in them, was a landmark in my teen years when i saw newer better more durable stuff coming stock with the cars.
The reason they kicker doesn't sound very good is power handling the planet audio is significantly better because of its rating which is like 600 watts rms where as the kicker is 200 watts rms but I'd recommend using an amplifier that's made for these subwoofers and get the good performance you want. The factory amplifier is only like 40-50 watts rms at 2 ohms so I mean getting the final load and preform from the factory amplifier is limited because I wasn't designed for larger power handling drivers.
I think the majority of people who are replacing the rear sub are looking for factory bace. Its a cheap and simple thing to do. Also if it wasn't for the fact that they were sitting right next to each other you would never even notice a difference between the two other than im betting years down the road the kicker will still be working fine.
Thanks and great to hear! Its so nice having the sub back in working order. Been rocking the planet audio in my Gambler 500 Tahoe for over a year now with no problems what so ever.
Glad I could help. Im sure everyone is trying to find a factory replacement. Its far from factory but it works. Been rocking that sub now for around 2 years and they are still working great. Its so nice having it working again and worth the time to replace it.
It worth the effort to replace. I have been enjoying mine for years now and so happy I did it. Do it sooner so you can enjoy it well you own the vehicle. I regret not doing it sooner myself.
Heck yeah! What sub did you end up going with? Im guessing with it being an XL you did the MB Quart? Its so much better with a working sub! I could never go back to not having one after replacing mine.
Thank you so much for the video!!! Exactly what I was looking for. I have an 02 suburban and am going with kicker. Was curious about fitment and any modifications I may be looking for a low profile one now lol!! Thanks again glad to see both turned out well 👍👍👍
Glad you like it. Im not entirely certain the Kicker will fit in a Suburban. The Tahoe and Yukon have different boxes than the Suburban and Yukon XL. If you do try the Kicker let me know if it fits. As of right now the only sub I know of that has been confirmed to fit the Suburban and Yukon XL's is the MB Quart - amzn.to/3hheFWg with a lower mounting depth. You will be happy with having a rear sub again. It makes a world of difference.
@postal redneck much appreciated I'm hoping it fits too I have seen ones with a more shallow mounting depth may look into that. My burban is bone stock the factory head unit and everything so I'm replacing it all, I was curious did you bypass your factory amp or is that what you're using?
Okay just making sure you knew the boxes were different between the 2. Hope it fits. In the Tahoe with the Planet audio it was stock radio and amp. In the Yukon with the Kicker it was aftermarket radio with stock amp. To power the stock amp if you install a after market radio you need to run power to the red wire on the small 5 wire connector to key on or none of your speakers will work.
Oooh I've had that issue once or twice hahaha yeah it's stock everything and sounds like trash, I'm going double din conversion and new speakers with aftermarket amp just gonna wire from scratch and completely do away with factory amp.
That actually sounds like fun. I did the same thing to my 1997 Tahoe. The door speakers ran off an amp under passenger back seat and the subs ran of an amp under the driver rear seat. Enjoy your build!
I go back an forth between just going with the Planet Audio or putting in an Image Dynamics or Arc Audio 8' both have a much lower Fs, long excursion, and rubber surrounds. Both are quite a bit more so there's my dilemma...
I will say going with anything bigger as far as power wise I would think wouldnt gain you that much with the factory box being as small as it is as well as the factory amps power. You also have to look at mounting depth with the subs you are considering as the factory box is not that deep either. If you do end up going with a different sub than in the video and it fits please let everyone know as im sure people who see this video would like to know if there are other alternatives and how well they worked.
Bass is always hard to tell when listening through a video, it sounds like the Kicker was a deeper sound though? I'm trying to decide between the two, what do you like more about the planet audio? Also, (Knowing nothing about car audio) It looks like your two wires from the factory sub just plug right into one side of the sub, and then you just run a jumper wire to the other side and that's it?
Honestly it would come down to how long you plan on owing the vehicle. I think the Kicker will last longer but with that being said I have had the Planet Audio one in my Tahoe for 2 years with no problems. As for the wiring you just want to make sure you are powering both coils so just put the stock wires to one coil and then some jumper wires over to the other one.
I had a 2000 Lexus LS400 with a factory subwoofer and blew it in 2022. So 22 years in that car is not bad. It was replaced with a Kicker But didn't sound as good as the factory one that came in it.. maybe it wasn't as compatible with the amp that came in the car
Going to do mine this week. One question, what is the purpose of bridging those subs first, then connecting them ? Does it not use all the power ifnyou only connect one side? Only subwoofers I've installed had one set of clamps. Thank you ! And great install 👍
Thanks. The reason you want to connect both voice coils is it brings the power draw down to 2 ohms. The factory amplifier uses 2 ohms. Hope this helps and good luck with your install.
I was looking at the skar IX 8” 2ohm and it still has two set of clamps. Would I still have to run it parallel or could I just use one set of clamps since it’s already 2ohm?? New to all this stereo stuff.
2003-2007 have a factory 6.5" sub in the center console. There are people who have put in 2000-2002 subs in the back and im sure you would notice but its quite a bit of work.
@PostalRedneck I have the LS trim level I don't have a center console mine fits up to nine people Instead of a center console I have a center seat so I don't think mine has a sub in general any help
Man thats a bummer. I like the little bit of base either setup gives you. If I were you I would be looking at installing an aftermarket sub and box but if you dont have the room getting a sub out of a older gen and hooking it up to a small sub would do the trick. Lots of work either way. Good luck.
Damn it, I saw on another comment that you said this won't fit in a suburban. Here I am sitting trying to jam it into the suburban box, wish I would have read that earlier 😢
Yup I mention it in the comments, description and video as well th-cam.com/video/RR0hvzRhKSQ/w-d-xo.html. The MB Quart - amzn.to/3hheFWg Sub will fit the suburban.
Read my comment and see what I did my speaker wouldn't fit either I just flipped it around I put the face inside the box I cut out the plastic screen so the magnet would go through you wouldn't believe how it sounded coming from a 8 inch subwoofer it's like the bass is inside the truck not behind the wall
So I actually purchased the planet audio sub from your link, and just tried to install it in my 2002 Yukon XL (non-bose) and I noticed immediately when I took the trim off that my box is different, and more rectangular. I got the factory sub out and put the Planet Audio one in, and it is about a half inch too tall :( Any suggestions anyone?
I need to do a video on the Suburban box. Have been informed that the MB Quart Sub will fit into a Suburban though I have yet to try it. MB Quart - amzn.to/3hheFWg
Wrong. Both subs installed are 2ohm and factory is 2ohm. Links for both subs in description. Sounds great and glad I replaced them. Under specs for the Kicker - "Features 4-Ohm dual voice coil for sound and wiring flexibility". Under specs for the Planet Audio - "Dual 4 Ohm Voice Coil". On a 4 ohm DVC sub you wire them in parallel to get a 2 ohm load. The factory amp in these systems require 2 ohms of resistance so both subs will work flawlessly. I hope this helps alleviate your concerns.
Honestly I would think the performance would be about the same maybe a little better but hardly worth it if its properly working. This is more or less for everyone who has a non working sub and wants to replace it. I would check to make sure your rubber is good on the sub itself as its a sealed box and any break points in that will hurt its performance but if that looks good I would just leave it be. Worse case is its an easy fix that dont take that long to do. Hope this help.
Got the kicker! and just finished installing it. I Did the install the exact same way you did in this video. Sounds much better! It's nice to hear that deep bass again. My OEM sub looked almost as miserable as yours did. Thanks for this vid!
No clue. You would have to measure mounting depth of the box to mounting surface and then see what the max mounting depth is for the sub you are trying to install.
I dont think there would much of a difference running anything bigger than stock. The size of the box is the limiting factor. If you are after base the stock sub box is not going to allow for much. If you do end up doing it let everyone know the outcome if you can. I would be interested to hear your findings.
Seemed like you were probably expecting the Planet Audio one to fail, thus the crooked mounting... 🤪 I know that it'd probably wouldn't be seen anyways, but it's just the OCD of it all... 😄😝😜
LOL you got me. I did not expect much from it and was more focused on the Kicker. After I had it all screwed together I noticed my mistake but it was too late. Believe me when I say it bugged me too. If anything it will make you focus on installing your sub right... your welcome 😅
What kind of 2001 suburban is that?? Been looking all over and yours is the closest I find to mine but your subwoofer box is bigger than mine. Bought audio planet sub and it’s still too deep for the subwoofer box. My speaker hole is on the bottom of the panel not top like yours.
@@PostalRedneck yeah I’ve been looking trying to fit one with no luck. You’re the closest I saw with an actual 2001 suburban but even mine is smaller than yours. I have the 4x4 2500 and my box is made short due to the gas tank 😫 the planet audio almost fit by an inch or two so trying a spacer to see if I can get the Skar 8” or the Planet Audio 8” like you have to fit. If not then I’ll be ordering the shallow mount sub you mentioned since that’s the smallest I’ve found with a good punch for just replacing the factory subwoofer. I’ll let ya know how and if it works.
The 2 boxes in the video are from a Tahoe and Yukon. Suburban and Yukon XL's are different. Hope you can get one of the 2 working so you dont have to spend you money ordering a 3rd one..
I wonder if the sound discrepancy is because the Kicker is a dual voice coil rated at 8 and 2 ohm, where the planet audio is rated at 4 ohm and 1 ohm. The factory sub is a 2 ohm sub.
amzn.to/4eUqdKq - Kicker 50CWCD84 CompC 8" Subwoofer - Dual Voice Coil 4-Ohm 900 Watts Max amzn.to/3YnftPj - Planet Audio AC8D 8 Inch Car Subwoofer - Dual 4 Ohm Voice Coil 1200 Watts Max Both subs are a 4 Ohm Dual voice coil. Wired correctly they will both pull 2 Ohms that match what the factory sub woofer 2 Ohms.
@@PostalRedneck Thanks. Eventually I figured it out. lol Planet Audio or Amazon doesn't make it easy to find the data. I relied on your opinion, I'm very happy. Thank you. I bought the Planet Audio for my Tahoe just because it was half the cost of the kicker, $47 and my sub was not working at all. I also bought the $3 warranty from Amazon just in case. lol So to hold me over I got the Planet Audio as my sub was not working at all. I liked how the Planet Audio looked. lol It looks like it might have more excursion. It sounds good not that I have anything to compare it to but I'm happy with it. I also bought JVC CS J620 speakers for the front doors. Again because they were $27 on Amazon to hold me over as the originals' were completely blown. I got the pig tails to plug in to the factory harness. I simply removed the plastic "grill" from the factory speaker. Put some 1/16th x 1/4" weather stripping on the front of the JVC, put the factory "grill" on it, put some more weather stripping on the back of the JVC and put it in the door the same as the factory speaker. Worked perfectly. It took 10 minutes per side.
@@PostalRedneck so I recently got an 8 inch subwoofer and I had everything installed but once it was time to put all of the plastic panels back in place, the subwoofer stuck out too much to the point where I couldn't put the panel back in its place. The subwoofer was touching the panel. But if the planet audio fits nicely and everything works then I think I'll give that one a go. Thanks!
Oh so the subwoofer was actually hitting the plastic cover that goes over it. I'm guessing that must have had a really deep throw and the foam was pretty thick. I've been running the Planet Audio sub now for about a year and have had no issues with it.
You could look up the specs of the Rockford Fosgate Sub you found and then pull your box out and measure to see if it will fit. There are unfortunately not many subs that do fit these boxes as they are not only shallow but also very small.
@@PostalRedneck I’ll have to measure it out when I get it back my Yukon XL has been in the shop as of tomorrow 9 days for 2 hours of diagnostics it’s rediculous. I’m gonna have to do stuff myself my mechanic is obviously very overloaded.
Check to see if all your door speakers are working. There is a chance the amp under the dash could be bad. Also if you have any other speakers try to plug them in and see if the new Kicker was bad.
It dont matter as the sub in the back is run by a factory amp built into the truck. But the Kicker had an aftermarket and the Planet Audio had a factory radio.
I think I saw 8 ohm on the Kicker. And it looks like the dual voice coils were plugged in parallel so you’re running 4 ohms on a system intended for 2 ohms. You just lost half the output from the stock system since you have twice the resistance not to mention over stressing the stock amp
There is literally a link to both subs in the description.
Yeah im sure a fare amount of people have installed the wrong subs or even wired them incorrectly and wonder why they dont sound all that good. I should have gone over the importance of this in my video but wanted to keep it simple as most people dont care about the math just the installation process. Its nice to see someone who has also done the research enough to even know the Chevys require 2 ohms and the importance of hitting that resistance value. I have built quite a few systems and its a bit overwhelming when you first get started.
Yes I am running the subs off the factory amp. I should have done this sooner. Its no base machine but made a huge difference for such a little sub woofer.
It just sounded slightly better but not by much. Honestly if they were not side by side in my driveway I would never be able to tell the difference. Im guessing though after a few years the quality of the Kicker will be better in the long run though. Hope that helps.
@@PostalRedneck hey, I just bought the same kicker sub you did. It’s got 4 push pins but I saw you only connected two. Does that matter? I’d really hope that I do this right you know?
Yeah your not going to roll up on a base competition with either sub and win a trophy haha. Still its better than the broken factory sub/non working factory sub. For the price and ease its a worth while thing to do. Obviously if you want crazy base you will have to go full aftermarket with box, amp, and sub.
This is by far one of the lazies comments I have received in awhile but I will answer it. 5:12 I say what size they are and there are links to both subs in the description. In case thats not enough they are 8 inches.
If you buy an aftermarket box you can get more out of the subs but thats not what this video is about. Its about replacing a broken sub with a direct bolt in at a reasonable price. Im sure a very small percentage of the population care to have more that what the factory sub offered for bass and that was the reason for this video. If I ever wanted to make a video about after market subs, boxes, amps and wiring I would do a video on my 2000 watt Tahoe with 3 batteries in it.
@@PostalRedneck well just didn't make sense to buy a high powered sub and want it to sound better than what it did. You do know they have subs with less more watts that could've been easily installed as well, js...
If you think a $40 sub woofer costs too much then you probably have more problems with your vehicle that need fixing first. I wanted something that would last not a $20 no name paper mache POS sub that was going to go bad in 2 year. JS.....
Witch or which? 🤔
Not to mention he's under powering them both far enough that they'll blow pretty quick (I'm sure they already have with how old the video is) unless he swapped out the factory amp aswell I'm only 5:18 into the video so I'm unsure
dude what 😭 on the kicker box it says 400 watts peak and on the planet audio box it says 1200 watts peak

Just rewatched and heard your comment about the shallower box, obviously can confirm haha!
I need to do a video on the Suburban box. Have been informed that the MB Quart Sub will fit into a Suburban though I have yet to try it. MB Quart - amzn.to/3hheFWg
My 2005 tahoe LT never came with a subwoofer. Where can I find the box?
These factory boxes came in the back of the 2000-2002 Tahoe or Yukon's. The 2003 or newer came with the sub in the center console.
Do either of your trucks have the Bose system in it?
I dont recall unfortunately. Whys that?
for the kicker did u just splice the wires in the box or u added other wires?
You have to use a section of wires to jump the dual voice coils in parallel and then I just connected them to the existing wires in the Box.
You guys are the best iwantfreestuff
Thanks but no free stuff
Hey. Any big difference in sound volume on the sub, since the factory one being 2ohm and the new ones are 4.
I'm a little late to the party, but, is it worth upgrading to the kicker from factory if the factory sub works? Or will performance be about the same?
Honestly I would think the performance would be about the same maybe a little better but hardly worth it if its properly working. This is more or less for everyone who has a non working sub and wants to replace it. I would check to make sure your rubber is good on the sub itself as its a sealed box and any break points in that will hurt its performance but if that looks good I would just leave it be. Worse case is its an easy fix that dont take that long to do. Hope this help.
@@PostalRedneck Thanks! Yah, I'll check the current sub.
Got the kicker! and just finished installing it. I Did the install the exact same way you did in this video. Sounds much better! It's nice to hear that deep bass again. My OEM sub looked almost as miserable as yours did. Thanks for this vid!
Is there a factory amp somewhere hiding?
Factory amp is behind the glove box under the dash.
would a JL Audio 8W1v3-4 or a SUNDOWN AUDIO SD-3 sub fit in that box?
No clue. You would have to measure mounting depth of the box to mounting surface and then see what the max mounting depth is for the sub you are trying to install.
Are you using the factory amp still? I'm thinking of junking it.
I know that it'd probably wouldn't be seen anyways, but it's just the OCD of it all...
If you have a Suburban or Yukon XL you have a shallower box and they require the MB Quart - amzn.to/3hheFWg. Hope this helps.
For the kicker is it required to use all four push pads or can I just use 2 for the stock wiring
You want to use all four pads as that's how you get the subwoofer to match the ohm rating of the SUV
I wonder if the sound discrepancy is because the Kicker is a dual voice coil rated at 8 and 2 ohm, where the planet audio is rated at 4 ohm and 1 ohm. The factory sub is a 2 ohm sub.
amzn.to/4eUqdKq - Kicker 50CWCD84 CompC 8" Subwoofer - Dual Voice Coil 4-Ohm 900 Watts Max
amzn.to/3YnftPj - Planet Audio AC8D 8 Inch Car Subwoofer - Dual 4 Ohm Voice Coil 1200 Watts Max
Both subs are a 4 Ohm Dual voice coil.
What if it didnt come factory with the subwoofer option..will the wires still be their?
Unlikely but it only takes about 5 minutes to get the plastic off to check.
Does the padding on the planet audio touch the panel at all? It would suck if it made a noise everytime the padding hit the panel
Im not quite sure what you are asking. Both subs work as intended.
@@PostalRedneck yeah exactly, just ordered the planet audio. Thanks for the feedback!
No Problem. Glad to have helped.
Do they need to be shallow mount woofers? I really like a Rockford fosgate subwoofer I found
I unfortunately dont know the exact measurement of depth for each box but I know they do need to be shallow mount if you want them to direct bolt in.
@@PostalRedneck probably will just buy the shallow mount versions it’s just less performance for $40 more
You could look up the specs of the Rockford Fosgate Sub you found and then pull your box out and measure to see if it will fit.
@@Andrew-hh3ol The XL has an even shallower box then the Tahoe and Yukon and the only sub I know that fits that is the MB Quart - amzn.to/3hheFWg
Are u using an aftermarket amp or the factory?
Factory amp.
@@PostalRedneck do u know what watt the stock amp is?
Nope
I just replaced my factory sub with the kicker sub shown in the video and it isn’t working for me, is there anything I could do to try to fix it?
Check to see if all your door speakers are working. There is a chance the amp under the dash could be bad. Also if you have any other speakers try to plug them in and see if the new Kicker was bad.
Stock radio or aftetmarket?
It dont matter as the sub in the back is run by a factory amp built into the truck. But the Kicker had an aftermarket and the Planet Audio had a factory radio.
How’s the planet sub working?
Been using it in my daily now for over 1 year and it sounds as good as the day I installed it.
@@PostalRedneck what gage of wire did you use to parallel the wires?
14 gauge. amzn.to/3Aw0Z3k
@@PostalRedneck there ya go, I couldn’t see clearly from the video, thought I had seen 8ohms but a DVC 4 ohms is perfect on parallel
How can I connect a dual 2ohm speaker ?
You cant. A dual 2ohm can only be 1ohm or 4ohm and the factory amp requires 2ohm. You need to buy a 2ohm single voice coil or a 4ohm duel voice coil.
Nice video!!
Thanks!
i think its because the kicker is more efficent
I put the Kicker in my daily driver and the other one in my winter beater. For sure the Kicker is the better of the 2 and will last the longest.
Great video
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
Great video thanks for the content
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Do you have the factory amp?
Yes I am running the subs off the factory amp. I should have done this sooner. Its no base machine but made a huge difference for such a little sub woofer.
@@PostalRedneck Thanks, great video. Just curious why you like the Planet Audio better?
It just sounded slightly better but not by much. Honestly if they were not side by side in my driveway I would never be able to tell the difference. Im guessing though after a few years the quality of the Kicker will be better in the long run though. Hope that helps.
Good job on the video.
Thanks!
What gauge wire did you use?
I used 14 gauge wire to connect both coils. (amzn.to/3EKPoOw)
@@PostalRedneck cool, thanks. This is a really helpful video
@@jbro0917 Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video and good luck on your sub replacement.
Watts from the stock sub?? And its a sub or a woofer?
No clue.
This was very helpful thx brotha
Glad it helped
@@PostalRedneck hey, I just bought the same kicker sub you did. It’s got 4 push pins but I saw you only connected two. Does that matter? I’d really hope that I do this right you know?
@@brandonfaulk8232 I ran a wire from one side to the other on both speakers.
@@PostalRedneck I’m doing this right now. I’m confused on the wiring part…
Is there a way I can direct message you like Instagram or messenger
What amp did you use ?
Factory amp
@@PostalRedneck i read this truck has 60 watt stock amp
This truck has rear A/C!
Both do but sadly only one of them works.
The Kicker C8 you need 0.5 Cu.Ft sealed box factory box Suck👍👍👍
Yeah your not going to roll up on a base competition with either sub and win a trophy haha. Still its better than the broken factory sub/non working factory sub. For the price and ease its a worth while thing to do. Obviously if you want crazy base you will have to go full aftermarket with box, amp, and sub.
What size is the sub?
This is by far one of the lazies comments I have received in awhile but I will answer it. 5:12 I say what size they are and there are links to both subs in the description. In case thats not enough they are 8 inches.
If you get an aftermarket amp for either one you will get alot more bass out of your subs...
JS.....
Clipping

@@PostalRedneck no, I think he really means clipping 🤣
It’s how old was speaker 🔊 they don’t last forever
Yeah they were not all that great to begin with but now that they have aged they all need to be replaced.
