One of my friends HATES November 9 with a burning passion and I´ve made it my personal duty to send any form of November 9- hatred her way, so best believe I´ll send this to her straight away! I haven´t even read the book but I still hate it and everything it promotes, also considering how awful I found the two Colleen Hoover books I (unfortunately) did read

I read Verity but it didn’t make me want to read more of Colleen Hoover’s books. We shouldn’t accept that many men treat women poorly and it’s not romantic - Georgia is right to worry for the straights as I’ve only met bad men and now I’m embracing spinsterhood with my cats and dogs 😂
I don’t like the no speech marks thing either, both of Sally Rooney’s books are like it, I am like WHY?!x

I find it perplexing that a lot of people did not understand the real meaning of The Power book and what's actually behind Naomi Alderman's idea.
The whole matter is not "See ? If women had superior physical strenght than men, they would be as bad, if not worse !", but just a parody/social commentary through a ''reversal of roles", to show men what it feels being the weaker sex ... women don't need to understand it, they already know: they experience it every single day of their lives, in the real world !
The whole fictional 'The Power" world is a mirror of the non-fictional one: every single bad thing that happens to men in the book, happens to women in real life. By Naomi Alderman own words (obviously she explains the concept better):
“Nothing happens to a man in this book that is not happening right now to a woman somewhere in the world. If my novel is a dystopia then we are living in a dystopia right now. Men are more horrified by this book than women. Which is as it should be, and is part of the point I think. Men look at me like a monster for writing these things and I have to point out that I wasn’t the one who invented the ideas of rape, of sexual slavery, of imprisoning the physically weaker gender, of genital mutilation to stop the physically weaker gender from enjoying sex, of selective abortions of one gender. I didn’t invent any of those things, I just picked them up and turned them over like an hourglass, to see how they looked upside down. And the answer is: it just feels different when the gun is pointed between your eyes than it does to watch it being pointed at someone else. It just does feel more real and more horrifying when you’re the one at risk.”

As someone who used to be in a abusive relationship I read Novemeber 9 when I was still in that situation and your are so right books like that made me think certain behaviour was normal when it really isn’t!
17:00 fr. Creating a patriarchy but retexturing it to women is the farthest thing from feminist I can think of. Like, let's take the notion that women are evil and men suffer because of them and then make it true in this fictional universe cuz surely that's not a dumb idea right? All you've done is made all the hate and violence men have towards women justified. Not to mention how that presence just breeds violence between eachother, like oh the men were evil but the women are also evil. Cuz if society flip flopped, you didn't get rid of all the misogynistic men, you just made them correct in their misogyny. How gross. Nothing that creates discrimination is feminist. Like what is going on in your head to make a group of people that are constantly harmed and mistreated the bad guys of your story?
I think the people who think this book is feminist have some internalized misogyny to work out.

My least favorite book of all time is Outlander. I was so excited to read that book because when it came out it was gaining popularity fast. It's a book about a woman who lived in the year 1945 and she was a nurse during WW2, who magically time travels to like 300 years in the past or something (it's been a long time, I don't remember the century she goes to). I love a good time travel story but this book quickly dissolved into a "romance" with an abusive partner and about 5 different attempted rape scenes. The main character was boring, the story sucked, and it was just one sexual assault scene after another. This is my least favorite book because of how much the hype let me down. I still cannot believe this became a successful series with a TV show.
It makes me sad that The Power was so poorly written. That sounds like an amazing premise for a book! That story could be so interesting and go so many different ways!! But then it did... That 😒
The TV show version of The Power is so much better!! I hated the book but the TV show was actually pretty decent

The worst book I’ve read is probably Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel. I think part of that is because I didn’t really know what the book was about when I picked it up and once I got into it, I kept waiting for any sense of meaningful plot but it all felt very random and every character was a miserable person. It was incredibly boring and honestly the author’s writing style was just absolutely not for me.
I’ve been (trying) to read Still Life by Sarah Winman. I’m less than 40 pages in and I’ve had to DNF it. It has no speech marks! I hate it! I have no idea what’s happened in the pages I have read and I can’t keep track. I’m so glad you feel the same about the lack of speech marks. Why are we now ignoring all we learnt about punctuation at school 😅 I’m sad cos it’s meant to be really good but I can’t do it.

26:24 yeah, there's a difference between someone having a fundamental understanding of people and then creating a purposefully shitty character from that understanding, and someone that goes "these are all the negative traits I can think of" and then puts them all into the same character.
One is because you understand shitty people and what makes them tick, and the other is just all the worst traits rolled into one with no other reason than to make the character suck. There's no thought or nuance. Even garbage people have reasons for their behavior.
It's like they use it as a shortcut.
Like, if it's a male character and they want the audience to know he's a bad guy they just make him sexist, as if that's the only negative trait a man can have. Or vice versa, where if he's a bad guy then obviously he has to be sexist too. It's just so bizarre and lacking in creativity. They couldn't think of a way to actually flesh him out or give him a reason to be disliked so they just made him sexist. Or they forget men can be assholes without also being sexist. I don't like how, in a lot of books, misogyny has become a shortcut for making an unlikable male character.
And when female characters are written like that, it's like they're the product of the authors internalized misogyny instead of the plot. There's no complexity or depth to their motivations. It's just all the negative ways the author perceives women shoved into one character. And she never has sympathetic traits or a personality. The whole character can be summed up as "terrible woman." Verity is a perfect example of misogyny from the author instead of the character.
(I hope that last paragraph made sence, I was struggling with how to phrase it.)
The book that I really hated was rosemary’s baby. I remember throwing it across the room after reading it!

Really enjoyed this video! Do you ever DNF bad books? Unpopular opinion, but the worst book I've ever read was Verity by Colleen Hoover. It's the first and last I will ever read by her. As you said about November 9, any lessons you think you're going to learn don't pan out, and it is horrifying 😢
