World’s First Review of the 2024 Toyota BZ4X! More Range & Efficiency, But Is It Enough?

  • First review and test of the Toyota BZ4X, upgraded for 2024 with more battery capacity, improved efficiency and much better cold-weather charging speeds.
This is the version of Toyota BZ4X that will come to Australia in February 2024. The upgraded 2024 BZ4X unlocks a little bit more battery capacity - expected to be something like 67kWh usable. Tweaks to the air conditioning make the EV more efficient. And for people who live in very cold areas, the charging speed is improved by about 30 percent.
We don’t know how much the BZ4X will cost in Australia…but its twin under the skin, the Subaru Solterra, starts at $78K before on-road costs…much more expensive than a Tesla Model Y.
Other rivals include the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Volvo XC40, Ford Mustang Mach-E etc.

I have a 2023 AWD bZ4X in the US. Yesterday evening, it was 4°C (39°F) outside and I wanted to find out what the battery-heater was capable of. Currently, the only way to get it to warm the pack above normal operating temperature for faster charging is to plug into DC. My hope is that draw from the pack itself will be enabled via software update for existing 2023 vehicles, so you can pre-condition the pack prior to arrival at the DC fast-charging station. When I plugged in, using ODB-II to monitor the system, I could see requests for warming go as high as 58°C (136°F) while charging. The heater appeared to have a steady 6kW draw and the pack ended up warming to 32°C (90°F). It was clear confirmation of the existing hardware being capable. Did you get any information alluding to what Toyota plans to provide for current owners?

From what I'm reading, here in the U.S. the bz4x is not selling, as hybrids outsell EV 3 to 1 here because of the lack of charging infrastructure and the lack of standard charging stations (another year before almost everyone will be NACS compliant). Still looking at the 2024 or 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid over another Hyundai Kona, as Hyundai dealers are adding stupid markups and I cannot get a Hybrid Kona.

@Steve_in_NJ Depends on what you read. bZ4X sales are are starting out just like Prius did. I remember. I was among the first 23 years ago to buy one. It didn't have a tax-credit available back then either.

Can you confirm with Toyota if the thermal management and efficiency changes they made for the 2024 are software or hardware? If they are software, will they apply to the 2023s around the world via an update. Thank you.

Toyota says the "4X" in bZ4X is supposed to signify something along the lines of "RAV4-equivalent crossover". I do wonder if maybe some day they'll start calling future iterations of this the RAV4, or if they'll continue to stick with _beyond Zero_ naming convention.
Good to know it can handle forest trails and light off-roading pretty well! That was always kind of my concern with particularly its Solterra twin. Hearing that this has X-Mode of the Subaru vein is actually pretty reassuring.

I bought one in Ontario in May 2023. I have the fwd, no x mode.
I absolutely love this car, no I haven't taken it off road lol. That's too expensive 🤣.
For those asking WHY I would buy this over a tesla? 🤣 that's easy AF. Tesla is a gimmick, slapped together with whatever they could reach at the time, no dealers or service shops, can't get one for years.... and, wait for it, they are still more expensive than the bz4x. My software doesn't glitch, my hardware is solid, it is built on a ice platform instead of dinky car platform, they thought of the snow build up in the hood/bonnet. Glad you guys are getting an improved version. Also glad to wait till June 2024 to see more of them on the road but for now it's amazing to have my spaceship t hat no one recognizes or has. Tesla is dime a dozen. Nitrogen is where it's going though.

With this update and earlier this year another update the BZ4X has become a good BEV with unfortunatly, a bad imago..... . This car was tested before this update, in the netherlands recently and considered a very good EV.... 450km range in summer and efficient EV motors, on par with the Tesla model Y. They praised the cars efficiency. In Norway this car is the 3rd bestselling car..... .

Hello,,and thanks for your tests. Here in Norway we have very high taxes for all cars with combustion engines, also for a plug in hybrid cars like the Toyota Rav4 phev which has a cost equals with Aus Dollar at more than 100.000, and from 2025 we will see even higher taxes on all cars with combustion engines because then our government has determined that all new cars sold from the first of January 2025 shall be zero emission cars, because they think it's electric options for all needs and use for passanger and light working cars. But it dosn't look like they have seen all the importent tasks outside the cities which is not possible to cower. And therefore they at last allowed other options with high taxes. We don't have not any zero emission options for such as long trips with towing heavy loads and in difficult conditions like with Toyota Hilux and Landcruiser, which already have very high taxes like the new LC wich as 2 seater working car which probebly will have a cost for more than 200.000 equals with Aus Dollars. Zero emission cars will only get very low weight taxes for cars under 72.000 equals with Aus Dollar. And the price for the most chosen model of Toyota bz4x with AWD with the same power in the front and rear engines, lies on that pricepoint equals with 72.000 Aus Dollar. The cheapest model bz4x with FWD lies on 62.000 Aus Dollar. The oppgraded model has got good test results where the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association had a consumtion of 1,3 KW per 10 km in their road test, which will correspond close to a range of 500 km (without highway). And the bz4x was also best in both the winter tests arranged by Electric Car 24s with some of the most common family cars in Norway in winter conditions.

The Toyota BZ4X or Subaru Solterra? Subaru for better looks (IMO), and Toyota for better future resale value. Or maybe ditch both altogether and get the Polestar 2 RWD.

Was on screen briefly. If there is a 5 percent improvement as Toyota suggests there will be, WLTP range would be from about 430km for an AWD model on 20-inch wheels, more for a FWD model on 18s. Let’s say real world range of high 300kms highway for a top-spec car… maybe 450km highway for a FWD model. I’m speculating - will need to test properly when we get them in.

  • @BigPoppaAA

I know EVs are generally expensive, but over 70k for a Toyota that its previous iteration had its wheels fall off, NO thanks! Is this front bumper strong enough it doesn't fall off like Kluger does? EVs are still in its preliminary stage with significant tech and battery improvements on a yearly basis. The BZ4X's competitors are EVs from China, namely BYD or MG in terms of material quality, suspension tuning / setup and overall build quality. The BZ4X's all steel subframe, all steel mcpherson struts steel suspension, diameter of anti roll bar, NVH treatment, underbody protection etc etc, how can it compete with Model Y? IF i'm buying a transitional EV (with significant depreciation) car with the quality of a $40k setup, I would 100% choose Atto3, Seal, or equivalent MG EVs over this $70k+ junk. Sure, if this BZ4X is priced in the $40k, a complete different story.

Both of our Toyota Prius' batteries failed prematurely at about 200K kms, every dollar we saved on Petrol went back to Toyota for the replacement batteries.
