Hello, I have test driven the BZ4X twice so far. Everything is great about the car. But the consumption is very high and the battery runs out very quickly. As you have a good contact with Toyota Germany I would like to ask you to forward this feedback so that an update can be made to the cars and this problem has been fixed.
It would be okay if it were around 30k... And that's the range-topping version which feels cheap against the Kia Ev6 and Ioniq 5 base model, I guess I'll see the downfall of Toyota in my lifetime
Not likely because most of the car companies buy shares in their rival brands, so if their cars flop and another is popular, they still share in the profit. Mostly the big players are GM & Ford - that have an ownership stake in just about every other carmaker.
A glove box, a decent rear view mirror, and I would buy it :) They must have a huge stock of those VGA camera's at Toyota, because they still put them in new models it seems... so annoying. Japanese seems to live on another planet sometimes... but I like em 🙂
But why do you need a 4k backup camera tho? Don't mean to be rude but this seems a bit superficial to me😅 I'd take it if it lasts over 15 years with no major problems

Those plastic panels are there to make the impression that the car is rugged. Toyota took so long for their first EV because they did not believe in EVs until a couple of years ago.
@@ibmtpx24 why is it late? Wordwilde toyota sells the most cars of any brand and only couple of percentage is an ev. I think they sre right on time since its just started.
@@jonasweber9408 Why? Because the Japanese realized their own Electric grid could not handle electric cars. It's why after actual research Toyota developed the hydrogen engine and continues to do so. The key word here is electric grid and energy production. Do enough research and you too will realize why the Japanese didn't rush into battery powered EVs.
"Yes they've copied Tesla".... Toyota literally developed the steer-by-wire yoke technology for their Lexus models years before Tesla introduced the "yoke" which is just a dangerous and poor thought out replacement steering wheel that doesn't adapt digitally to the vehicle's speed like Toyota's does.
Great review! Makes me a little nervous for their new 4runner model. Toyota makes great vehicles but those goofy fenders Subaru has and now the Vz4 has…. Hopefully not
A lot of BZ4x was made by Subaru, so thankfully, unless Toyota follows that trend, the 4Runner is still up in the air, since Subaru has nothing to do with it.
Blimey! Matt gets all excited about being able to remotely start the air con - this has been a facility on BMW i3s for YEARS. And, no doubt, other EVs as well. Doh!
I have one of these with the top trim level and I like it quite a bit. Bought it after my Porsche Cayenne Turbo S engine ate itself after explosively ejecting all 9 liters of oil. I think I may win the award for "most improvement", going from 12 mpg unleaded to whatever the equivalent measurement is for the Bz4x. Also, currently charging it with my solar panels, which is nifty.
Get the impression Toyota were late to the game as they expected the world to move to Hydrogen after Petrol/Hybrids but governments backed EVs instead. Ironically, the Germans backing the wrong horse (Diesel) forced them to go towards EV quicker than Toyota who were right to back hybrid but slow to then move to full EVs as hybrids were selling so well.
From what I understand, after the tsunamis took out their power plant, their EVs at the time became unreliable because their power grid was unreliable. So, they went to the next alternative to petrol.
Very good reasons for not backing hydrogen, as it's just a complicated and inefficient way of consuming fossil fuels and producing carbon dioxide. A tiny fraction of one percent of world hydrogen production is green, the rest comes from oil.
@@TheNigaHigaFan4Ever hybrids are a good place to be for them. I personally think they should have gone with plug in hybrids for all their hybrid models as a starting place
@@peterkn2 the problem with plug-ins is that if not being charged they are just carrying more weight with the bigger battery. My dad owned a plug-in prius and he never charged it. For the smaller cars it's not really feasible and the prius and rav4 have the option for plug in. So if you charge regularly you could buy it
What's funny is yesterday they put the price up two grand on their website wanting even more for it, now £44k. It should have been £34k to have even a chance of selling
Full electric cars are way less environmentally friendly than hybrids and hydrogen cars, because they take power from the grid. I think that's why it took them so long to build it, because Toyota were focusing on hybrids and hydrogen cars.
"nicer cars like the ioniq 5 and model 3". i woudn't really say that, the toyota looks miles ahead of all those models, it has an actual futuristic design instead of the cubey or sportsy design of the others, with a touch of quirkiness and at the same time soberness that makes it an actual nice car.
This car is impossible to find even if you wanted it, at least in the US. Toyota can't keep up with demand for most of their models, including this one.
All Japanese cars with automatic transmission have that daft 'bong' alarm when the vehicle is put into reverse (here in Japan). I thought it was the law here, but I have recently bought a Land Rover Discovery and was ecstatic to find that it does not bong away at me to tell me that I have selected reverse. Consequently, I realised that this is just something that Japanese manufacturers feel they need to add to all their damned automatics.
@@kendelion You mean my Landrover Discovery? No, it is a Japan specific model bought at a Landrover dealership. The Landrover Defender I test drove also didn't have it. I have always had a manual for the past 31 years I have lived here and manual vehicles don't have it of course.
My manual lexus has it (constant beep when in reverse). I think it’s a nice touch and I suppose a reasonable and cheap safety feature for unfortunately distracted drivers.

Alot of ev's don't have rear wipers, but they forget that in the uk our roads are filthy and we have lots of country roads and windy rainy weather that blows and sweeps dust and muck up. Its a stupid design fault
Great review! This design looks way too busy, outside and inside. Weirdly enough, I am starting to appreciate the Model Y's clean/simple design more and more now. The simplicity seems more relaxing, especially with all the global daily developments that seem to be creating more and more anxiety and stress. Something simple seem more meditative. Expecting it to be in ZEV states only in the US. It's a token effort they can show to keep the brand loyal from straying. Slow charging and a lower range so we can't get the Subaru twin to replace our Forester for long road trip explorations in out of the way areas.
Great review Matt, but the over the steering wheel view of the dials is a no from me. It defeats the seating position for an SUV and encourages a driving position with the steering wheel in your lap, just like a Peugeot 2008.
@@djoetma yeah but these Asian brands are starting to move into Euro price territory and to me it isn't justified, they were supposed to be the cheaper option but that is eroding pretty quickly.

True and transport, of which cars are only a part, only accounts for 16 percent of all greenhouse gasses. Electric cars aren’t going to save the planet
I agree tbh. Sure they are great cars but hybrids are a better option as of now imo. Lithium mining isn't at all clean and has many room for improvements and lithium ion batteries aren't all that dense
I'm assuming that they raised with only 10 HP the 4*4 version just to overcome the losses of the added mechanical parts of AWD, no need to exploit the battery further more.
After years in the wilderness, the design department at Toyota have finally opened their pencil cases. Recently drove the new Aygo X which is a great little car. If this is half as good it will be a huge success.
If you’re eluding to the slow charging speed, the European 4X’s all get Panasonic batteries. The slow charging BYD battery is only on the North American AWD model. On the European or the fwd version (Panasonic battery) in the US charging from 10-80% is 30min on a 150kw charger which is the same as VW ID4 etc. Only the US AWD version (BYD battery) has the really bad battery.
@@criancrna1487 Yeah but one of the best selling points of this vehicle is ground clearance, esp for the Solterra. Who needs ground clearance and fwd? Driving over curbs in a Walmart parking lot? The battery optioning was a major marketing error.

With most wages in usa at 2000 levels who the hell can afford 41000 for a car.? Move to Europe where you dont need a car. They have mass transit to every town and village. Save 1000 per month in transportation costs.
I love the special button in the BZ4X, button off, wheels stay on, button pressed, wheels fall off. It’s crazy to think that every single one of Toyota’s only BEV have had to be recalled, thankfully they have only sold a couple of thousand of them. And to make matters worse, they aren’t even made by Toyota, they don’t have the knowledge to build them themselves. They are made by a Chinese company in China. Shame on you Toyota.
"It should charge from 20% to 80% charge in 30 minutes" [with the fastest possible charging option]. So, a 30-minute wait to get only 180 miles* of range and I have to pay $50,000 for the privilege? The problem with EVs is energy density and recharge time. It's simply not competitive with ICE vehicles. Future battery tech will fix this, which means lithium-ion tech will soon be obsolete. Why should anyone shell out $50,000 for a vehicle that soon will be nothing more than a large doorstop? *(80%-20%) = 60% x 300 miles
You might want to recheck a few things regarding this car! we just purchased a Toyota and the salesman informed us that this particular car has been recalled due the possibility the wheels/wheelnuts could come off when cornering!
The wheels on these are absolutely massive.. Saw one at a local dealer the other day with upspec wheels, 235/60 R20.. That's a hell of a lot of unsprung mass dragging the efficiency down! Also, the closest comparison I have for the seating position, especially in the rear, is an 80's Grand Cherokee. You climb up into the car and your legs points straight forward in the front seat, and floor is much to high in the rear. To me it's yet another overpriced, oversized, unpractical, massive "car" lacking in everything except rear passenger legroom (if seat height isn't taken into account).

If you don't have heavy snow, ground clearance is more important than awd.
Better off with FWD and a clever front diff than AWD - at least where I live and it never snows.
Hello, I have test driven the BZ4X twice so far. Everything is great about the car. But the consumption is very high and the battery runs out very quickly. As you have a good contact with Toyota Germany I would like to ask you to forward this feedback so that an update can be made to the cars and this problem has been fixed.
Weren't they recently recalled because their wheels could fall off?
They were
Yes. Embarrassing given how long Toyota has been making cars.
Yep. There was a recent recall. That's why Doug DeMuro pulled his Bz4x review.

Idk if there are new designers at Toyota but their recent calars have been looking quite attractive

Toyota gives 1million kilometer or 10 years warrantee. Which other carbrand does this?
Not likely because most of the car companies buy shares in their rival brands, so if their cars flop and another is popular, they still share in the profit. Mostly the big players are GM & Ford - that have an ownership stake in just about every other carmaker.

That black exterior trim would totally put me off.
I wish car makers would get over this recent obsession with deleting the rear wiper. Such a STUPID idea.
IKR I mean what's the point of removing a wiper lol, it doesn't cost 10k that wiper, it will be something like 10$ for everything (cables, wiper, wiper blade) so what's the point?

This is a Toyota. Nobody buys it because of how fancy other cars are.
“What took so long?” Well, they sure didn’t spend enough time on painting all the body panels.
And a lot of money on lobbying against EVs 😄
Those plastic panels are there to make the impression that the car is rugged. Toyota took so long for their first EV because they did not believe in EVs until a couple of years ago.
@@ibmtpx24 Subaru is even doing it with the new WRX, not sure how I think about it.
Hopefully not
A lot of BZ4x was made by Subaru, so thankfully, unless Toyota follows that trend, the 4Runner is still up in the air, since Subaru has nothing to do with it.

what the hall is with that center console how does one scoot over to the other seat like you would in a normal car?
I thought Toyota would give some kind of warranty on their Electric power units like they give on their other cars.
They do. If you take the car in for a yearly health check the battery warranty extends up to 10 years / 625,000 miles
Toyota really doesn't care about battery EVs, and almost rightly so, hydrogen fuel cell EVs are unfairly ignored, lithium battery tech is awful.

@Michael Headley Sadly, it's the best selling right now. Unsparingly, Toyota choose a cash cow for their first EV.
Altough the hybrids are pretty good right now. I especially like the yaris and c-hr
£42k (starting) for that monstrosity? No thanks - i'd put up with the waiting lists of an Ioniq 5 or EV6.
What's funny is yesterday they put the price up two grand on their website wanting even more for it, now £44k. It should have been £34k to have even a chance of selling
I’ve had this Kia EV6 for just over a month, and I’ve already experienced a number of problems.
Given Toyota took too long and slammed full electric for so long my first electric car will be a Kia/Hyundai.
Full electric cars are way less environmentally friendly than hybrids and hydrogen cars, because they take power from the grid. I think that's why it took them so long to build it, because Toyota were focusing on hybrids and hydrogen cars.
If they'd priced it a bit lower it might have sold. At this price it's against far nicer cars like the ioniq 5 and model 3.
Wow, Toyota has really outdone themselves with the BZ4X!
No one can make a good car look bad like Toyota 😂they never disappoint 😅
“Hi , matt Watson here from car wow” the only intro that matters 🤣
All Japanese cars with automatic transmission have that daft 'bong' alarm when the vehicle is put into reverse (here in Japan). I thought it was the law here, but I have recently bought a Land Rover Discovery and was ecstatic to find that it does not bong away at me to tell me that I have selected reverse. Consequently, I realised that this is just something that Japanese manufacturers feel they need to add to all their damned automatics.

Hydrogen is even more overhyped
what are those car seats? They seem really nice.
I'm assuming that they raised with only 10 HP the 4*4 version just to overcome the losses of the added mechanical parts of AWD, no need to exploit the battery further more.
love the black cladding, one of the better implementation of plastic panels. The design is japanese cool.

The problem with EVs is energy density and recharge time. It's simply not competitive with ICE vehicles. Future battery tech will fix this, which means lithium-ion tech will soon be obsolete.
