    I’m fortunate in the sense that I have a Subaru Crosstrek and an EV for commuting. Recently went on a trip to the American southwest in the Subaru. Cruising the desert, exploring ghost towns, encountering soft sand and hard rocks, etc…the Subaru was the clear winner between which vehicle to take for the trip. Gas stations were already spread out and scarce, EV stations literally non existent. Love both of these vehicles but even Ray Charles can see that taking an EV off road just isn’t there yet outside of a purpose built recreational road park.

      Which EV? Tesla vs others make a big difference in the chargers IMHO. I bet A rivian can go more places than any Subaru. It is a lot more $$ though.

    sad that this (and the Solterra twin) are (regulation) compliance vehicles; only designed to meet the requirement and nothing more or beyond the requirement. I'm not sure where these 2 cars will go or if they'll spawn an entire line (think VW I.D.), but it is clear the first effort was mediocre/Grade 'C' at best. Must do better...a lot bwtter.

  • @edsmith9855
    @edsmith9855 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    This car seems like an early effort model that came late in the game. Slow charging and relatively short range are major negatives. The AWD system actually seems quite good, but who would take this car any distance off road?

    The thing i never hear mentioned is that many drivers, like me, only test the range on weekends and esp holidays when the charging stations have lines. I could deal with the range if I didn’t have to add an hour at the charging station to an already lousy 5 hr drive in heavy traffic.

  • @infernovideo
    @infernovideo หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The range would be fine for many if it could charge from 10-80% in 10 to 15 minutes. The issue is how crazy slow the charging is when the battery is cold or hot.

    This is the EV that Toyota made to prove that EV’s aren’t very good. Small battery, low range, slow charging, and ugly. When Toyota cares it will make a much better and more attractive EV, hopefully they can also make it competitive as there are other companies that already have very impressive EV’s. I own a Rav4 Prime and it’s great. I’d like to move on to an EV now. I’m not mad at Toyota, I’m just disappointed.

    I cannot believe that Subaru signed off on the Solterra badged version of this.
    No spare tire, no range to go anywhere, does not charge up to standard, goofy Toyota styling complete with mascara stains, a front air dam that is sure to get damaged in even mild off roading, that bizarre dashboard, that goofy split sunroof.
    These things (Toyota badged version) have been going well below sticker price - when I was car shopping last fall they were offering about $10k below sticker. We can all see why.
    BTW- no glove box, either.

  • @MarcGaerlan

    Toyota made a good decision letting Subaru engineer the AWD. I believe if there were more ground clearance it would have made it out of the sand pit.

    Ryan, you definitely hit the nail directly on the head. Although I think the BZ/Soltera are pretty nice cars, they, along with other EVs make sense for only a very specific buyer. And that is exactly what is holding back their sales. EVs are great, if you make a specific amount of money, drive under a specific amount of miles, have a specific amount of time to waste sitting at a charger, or have a specific amount of money to install a home charger and on and on. If the Government and manufacturers are going to keep pushing these vehicles they have a lot of work to do before they are accepted and practical for most people.

    The milage bit here.. for me its not that 220 miles sounds bad... its that those numbers arent useful for highway speeds. My solterra range was closer to 130 miles at 78mph on the highway. Going slower would help but then I am the slig creating congestion.

  • @bobby350z
    @bobby350z หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Having two EVs now I say that the range anxiety shouldn't be an issue, especially with Teslas as chargers are everywhere. Getting flats and needing road side is a bigger problem due to these EVs being heavier and no spare tires. In my area during last yr I probably seen < 10 BZX. I see like 20 Tesla in less than 1 min on the road. If this car was like 30-35k, maybe you will see more people buy. Toyota is too late IMHO. Maybe they know something that I don't. Before anyone says I am Tesla fanboy, no I am not. I don't like them even though I have one. I still waiting to see what new 4 runner has to offer and then decide if I go with Lexus 550 or not.

How would you do it if it was 20 feet down a steep bank and needed to be pulled up? Maybe a video series on how each manufacture says how to accomplish such a feat. Starting with Subaru and Toyota.

    Nothing to do with the car, but it sucks to drive an EV in Germany (financially). If you dont have a solar roof you are paying 25ct. per kWh (assuming you need 20kWh for 100km it is 5€) and on public chargers you pay from 39ct up to 90ct and sometimes even a time fee.
    I don't have solar and also don't have a home charger. So I go to public stations (~10€ / 100km) and literally have the same value (but more discomfort) than with a decent petrol car.

    From a business perspective , could you justify putting better wheels and tires on a vehicle like this for your test? I feel like when you take a car with all-seasons onto roads like this, it’s more a test of what would happen if you ended up in a difficult situation with substandard equipment. Maybe you could turn around and sell the tires, or keep them for future vehicles they would fit on.

    Can't help but think say 18 inch wheels with even mild AT tyres (like the Wilderness models) would make a significant difference. All in all, I reckon it did very well off-road, albeit the (recently new) final "sand-pit" test is very challenging cos the dips are so deep. The Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness with more advantageous ground clearance, tyres and wheel base, was nearing it limits in the sand-pit test, so I'm not surprised the BZ4x high-centred. Thanks for the very transparent review !

    I've honestly been pretty impressed by the bZ4X and Solterra twins. They've finally launched in my country this month, and they've been heavily marketing the Subaru version in particular.
    The battery tech is certainly one place they could improve it however. Something more energy dense rather than simply making the battery bigger would be the right call, i think. - Incidentally, the bZ3 that's sold exclusively in China which this shares its platform with actually has BYD's blade LFP battery cells on board.
    But besides that, they've got a solid first effort here. Dare i say… Subaru Solterra Wilderness?

    • @LongIslandMopars
      @LongIslandMopars หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It's all about marketing. People buy similar gas-powered SUV/CUV so the automakers have to make something equivalent in an EV. However, no one is going into the wilderness with these things because you can't carry extra fuel. If you're getting stuck and working the drivetrain, you're going to burn through a lot of electrons. Now your range has dropped and you'll either not make it out or have to cut your trip short. Pure marketing aimed at certain buyers only.

    • @fortniteharambe

      Electric vehicles lose most of their range at highway speeds. It would be interesting to see some actual trail range tests since the speeds are relatively slow. I wouldn't be surprised to see the bZ4X go over 300 miles at trail speed (in mild weather), and that's way more trail than most people (and this soft-roader) can take. Most folks who can charge at home and want to take 100 mile round trips up in the hills and back will do fine with a vehicle like this. Long road trips would need substantial planning and patience. Note of course that for this car, "trail" or "up in the hills" = decent forest road at worst.

    Seems like a neat choice for a 2nd or 3rd car for a well-heeled buyer. But I think EVs could help the most if they were more like a 35mph electric golf cart with room for 2 people and binge at Costco or Sam's. 100 mile range would be plenty. Seems like this could work as a 2nd car in the $8-10K price range for many families.

Right now gas is the only option for me because I drive a lot including multiple yearly family road trips. I don’t expect an electric car to go across the country on a single charge but it like to make it a few hours before trying to find a charging station and hope it isn’t crowded. I’d be surprised if you only had an electric car for all your needs. I like your reviews but don’t understand your message on this one.

    I’ve recently got to drive an EV vehicle recently for a good amount of time to say. “I’ll pass on EVs” they are absolutely atrocious when it comes to recharging like who in their right mind thinks it’s ok for these vehicles to charging 3 times a week with each charge time take anywhere between 40-60 minutes to fully charge and with a range of about 220 miles per charge. EVs are a noble concept but super inconvenient very expensive and not worth the change. Therefore put me down for burning gasoline for the rest of my life. Nature has a natural way to heal itself so I am certain the world’s environment will be fine. So “help the environment” ideology is definitely not a sales point.

      Nature will only heal itself if we give it the urgent attention it needs…but
      I agree most EVs are not a practical choice and it should be on the governments to regulate the large industries that produce the most pollution, not on individual consumers who buy the products from the industries to change their ways..

    The design is just a big blob.
    The gage cluster is horrible.
    The range is a joke. Unless you wanna spend stupid money on a city car, this is a waste.

    You spend the same amount of money in electricity as you do gas. I can fill a gas tank faster than I can charge a car and I can travel more miles with an f-150 with a 36 gallon tank for example.

      At my house I pay .07-cents per kWh. So for about 200 miles of driving (conservatively) I pay less than $5 for an electric “fill up.” Nothing running petroleum will even get you close to 200 miles for $5.

    I like how people make the “ they are more expensive, but you don’t have to by gas” argument. Cool. I spend roughly 35 bucks a week on gas,so when I can buy an EV for 140 bucks a month and go from 1/4 tank to full in under five minutes. Then it’s worth a conversation.

      His audience is bound to be mostly new car shoppers, and various sources claim anywhere from 25 to 50% of them are at least curious about EVs. So I'd say he's got some rationale for producing some of this content. Some of those shoppers will even have use cases that will be very well-served by some of the available EVs. We're considering an EV for our next car, not because of the government or to save the planet, but because we prefer the luxury of having a torquey car with no turbo and no clunky drivetrain, and we have the ability to charge at home to meet all of our daily needs. I'm glad Ryan is showing such cars, to help us choose the best vehicle for our case that our freedom can buy.
