Just fantastic! I loved hearing Shirley reminisce about working with George, I loved her insights as a background vocalist. Most of all, I loved that there was no ego with Shirley except for the fact that she was proud to have done her best. And THAT she has every right to have pride in. Please bring her back for another song!
Thank you Shirley I recognize you now on the live unplugged performances you are on the far left opposite the men and in the middle it's the price sisters. George loved your soulful as you put it voices of all you women and its truly brilliant!!!!
Shirley Lewis' voice is beautiful, and she is a bundle of joy to watch, so I hope that you do more video's together! It is incredible to learn that her and George Michael's voices were arranged and layered in such a way that they sound like a full gospel choir with both male and female background singers! Their sound is simply magical..
Shirley is an absolute gem. I can see why George wanted to work with her. Can’t wait for more content like this, including a deep dive analysis with her of Freedom 90. Great work 🤩
Wow, I really enjoyed this two part analysis of Father Figure. I was fortunate to be a teen in the 80s and George is my absolute favorite. Faith was the very first CD I bought ( I had it already on cassette too!) and it’s in my car’s CD player now. Shirley is so sweet and humble, love her! I hope you guys do another collaboration. “Heaven is a kiss and a smile” 😘 😊
It’s so nice to hear this analysis. People often talk about George’s ability as a song writer, and rightly so. But I think it is his voice that really set him apart from all others. Quite simply the best voice I’ve ever heard.
Fil, I really can not overstate how much I appreciate this presentation. Your respect for such an icon and Shirley's absolute joy in recalling her time spent working with Saint George Michael truly is wondrous to be able to share in. Tears flow every time I watch. I can't get enough and I wasn't using that moisture anyways. My love is always telling me so.
I love these interviews with Shirley...the pure joy on her face while reminiscing about working with George is lovely to see. I really hope you take her up on that offer to do an analysis of "Freedom '90". You're so much fun to watch together, because you obviously both had such a good time doing this interview. I agree with Laura...more Fil and Shirley!! 😊
In the months before George died, I was in a Target shopping when this song caught my attention. I had never really paid that much attention to it before….and then without warning I started to weep. I’m sure I probably looked a mess after ditching my cart and rushing out of Target, as a grown man, crying😂😂😂! What a day and to have no reason to be crying!!!
Heart SQUAD ❤❤❤❤❤ for The talented, skilled , authenticity/ integrity. GMs vocals and range of musical prowess is phenomenal byound words. He created music for all musical genres /emotions/Human condition. He was was embodiment of the Human experience on this Earth Plain. He arranged his music 🎶 to divulge his inner struggles and joys, the dichotomy of some/all/many directions we as human beings experience in many forms. The interview was great.❤x 2024
I've got to catch up on your video's I haven't been feeling well. . Any way this was just gold and fascinating on so many levels. And Shirley is so talented and lovely. Its like having a piece of George with us. Thank you again for your wonderful video's!!
Wonderful. As a child of the late 50's to 70's, I was spoiled for great music. Didn't take any notice of George until "Older", which staggered me. I made it my business to then dig back and hear what I'd missed. I am grateful to hear all you have to say about the great work of George Michael.
Georges backing vocalists always looked like they were having the best time. Shirley always had a big smile. Now I understand a lot more why. Thank you for such a brilliant, inciteful analysis.
George is hands down my favorite singer of all time. And to have Shirley on the show and explaining there comrartery on Faith is amazing to hear, and learn about. And Faith was his greatest album in my opinion. And Father Figure is the best song of George's in my opinion.I know every lyric of every song he has ever recorded. And I mean every single song he ever recorded and put out to the public.Thank you for the insight and Shirley is so blessed to have worked with the greatest singer songwriterof my generation no doubt about it.Miss you heaps Yog
I would love to see another video with Ms. Lewis for Freedom 90. Her insights about being a proper backing vocalist were so true and I loved how she now has the proof that it was only their voices on the track. A hearty thanks to Fil and Ms. Lewis for making this video.
I know your interview with Shirley Lewis was focus on George Michael performance. Yet I could see that Shirley was flatter by your sincere compliments on her vocal skills. Like others have said you and Shirley had a good time and work well together. Thanks, Shirley Lewis, for being one of Fil's special guesses on his channel.😊
This is such a treat thank you!... favourite bit of this track has always been the pause before...."it's in your eyes.....baby"...then the pause and response of "and love can't lie, no" like a reflective conversation. "greet me with the eyes of a child...my love is always telling me so ..heaven is a kiss and a smile" ....then the emphatically reassuring "just hold on, hold on and I won't tell you go my baby" with it's gospel-like sound laying his feelings through his lyrics at the alter of love
I just watched an interview of Shirley Lewis on another channel where she was speaking of women's issues and she revealed her age! I am thrilled to know I am the same age as the gorgeous and talented Shirley and the handsome and gifted Kip Winger! Life is good!
Hi, It's so nice to see you, & Shirley. Shirley's been in my thoughts so many times. Gosh, I've wanted to hear from & see her. I wondered how she was doing after George passed. When George passed this must have broken her heart. Shirley was with George for almost all of his career. What a lovely lady she is. Also, It's nice to hear her speak of their careers together. It still hurts sometimes even though George left us much. music with a pure & full heart. He has sure been a blessing in my life. LOL my Friend BK 🕯🌹😇🎶🎶🎶💖
Shirley's such a LOVELY person! Even if you're not a George Micheal fan, I'm sure there's a lot you can get out of this video, just in pure humanitarian terms!
Thank you Fil for bringing us these amazing videos with Shirley, and yes, please can you and Shirley do another analysis of George's music 💜 And thank you to Shirley, listening to you talking about George in such an interesting and beautiful way, and referencing George in a present tense, I smiled all the way through these videos. Like most lovelies, even though I never met George I miss him every single day 💜 Thank you both 💜
The two of you together is double the enthusiasm - I love it! So amazing getting Shirley's insight into both her experience and George's process. You did a fantastic job on this, Fil! It was so interesting and entertaining, I felt a little sad when it got to the end!
This is my favorite interview so far. The joy on Shirley's face made me smile along with her. You both seemed to be enjoying your interactions. It's always a learning experience watching your analysis videos. Well done.
Thanks Fil and thanks Shirley, for this great tribute to George. He was unique. Shirley's voice is so great. George only wanted the best! So sad he's no longer with us. 💜
I hope you will look at Freedom 90 with Shirley - such a fabulous, and iconic, song. I think it would also be interesting to compare it to Wham’s Freedom and discuss any changes in George’s voice and techniques.
Thanks Fil and Shirley. Shirley and George what a compliment to each other. Music history forever. I’m so grateful for all the songs they sang together. ❤
Shirley you have no need to sit on your hands, honestly, we want to hear everything you have to say. You certainly made an impact with George and then millions of us too. Thank you Fil this, for me, has been one of the best interview/analysis I have heard. I was the same as you Fil, thinking there was a small choir backing the song, but nope, it was George and Shirley the awesome pair. Thanks for giving us the chance to hear this fantastic interview ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🤟
This has been a wonderful experience hearing about the making of a song from the perspective of a back-up vocalist. Shirley is such a lovely person who has much she can tell us of a different side to vocals than just the lead vocals. I'd definitely love to hear more about back-up singing and bring on Freedom 90! Thanks to both of you for the insight into another genre of music.🇦🇺💖🕊
I have to admit, it has blown my mind knowing that father figure is just George and Shirley! I also thought there were a few singers doing the melodys/harmony’s. I got this impression from watching some of the live shows. It sound similar! Crazy. An amazing job. My fav George song. Although I love his live version of One More Try live (at the princes live concert). Brilliant. It’s just raw and flawless.
Thank you Fil... Seems you've made Shirley extremely happy with this, and can also tell she is so proud of the work involved, as well she should be! 😉 Thank you again for your analysis!🌷 🙋💞
Hi guys, thanks for the chat 🙃 Shirley has the gift of blending timing and colour quality to the lead. Kudos to her, much obliged for sharing memories like these. 🎉
Deon Estus’ voice meshed well with George Michael’s voice. In fact, George sang backing vocals for Deon’s Heaven Help Us. I have enjoyed the videos with Shirley. I’d love to see you two do another.
I really enjoyed this interview! It was so fun and entertaining, it was like you were having a cool laid-back, down to earth conversation. I could tell just how much fun it was for Shirley to remember how much she loved working with George. I hope you two get together again and do another interview, possibly doing "Freedom 90" like you mentioned. You and Shirley did an incredible job, thank you both so much! 🙂❤️
This interview was such fun to watch, and really interesting as well. I loved to see Shirley's excitement about getting to hear just her and George's isolated vocals together. It was also really interesting to touch on the different demands of a back-up vocalist, which most of us would not really appreciate without it being pointed out. Great work, both of you!
I like how Shirley is happy to be a background singer. They're overlooked sometimes and she's proud to support the lead singers. Please do Freedom - Shirley wants to!!! A most enjoyable two part interview.
Thanks Fil, Part 2 of your interview with Ms Shirley Lewis didn't disappoint. So enjoyably entertaining and informative. Another interview regarding Freedom would be great. Janet from Louisiana ☮🖤🤘
How WELL Shirley’s voice melds with George’s but, not so her voice is lost…you can definitely hear that it’s a woman’s voice, just a bit higher than his, but as breathy and complimentary to his. This was very interesting, Fil, to hear the isolated vocals and to hear from the talented back-up singer that George Michael trusted to get the sound he wanted on this particular song. Well done, Shirley! Thank-you, Fil! Another great video.🤘
This was so enjoyable to watch. It was a great part 2 interview. Shirley is a lovely person and I enjoyed listening to both their vocals which blended so well together. Thank you Fil and to Shirley Lewis. This was simply wonderful!
Your and Shirley's just the right balance between relaxed and excited while presenting so much information made this video a great one! You're a fabulous host!
You and Shirley are like two joyful kids reveling in the wonder of music! Would love to see another collaborative analysis with her. She is a lovely, engaging person and it is so wonderful to hear a backing singer's perspective and memories. So well done, Dr. Henley!
Awesome video again. Shirley's idea of a video about backup singers is a good one. That would be very interesting. These 2 videos with her were excellent and it must've been so nice for her to hear his voice and hers isolated. It was awesome for us too. Thank you.
Hi Fil, This was a wonderful part 2! Shirley is so gracious and you can tell she really loved George. Great to hear her perspective as a backup singer. Being the lead vocal is not for everyone, and how important it is to blend well when singing with others. This can sometimes be hard to do! Really fun to watch this analysis video, and hope she can do Freedom sometime in the near future. Great job putting this all together. It was awesome! Thank you so much. Love you… Debbie ☮️
It was so refreshing to hear Shirley talk about the difference between a lead vocalist and a back up vocalist. She described the difference in how one performs and the need for listening beyond a basic skill. I missed Part 1 for five months (🔕at the time) , but now that I've found it I'm all over Part 2! 👏 Shirley's enthusiasm and appreciation for the music[al analysis] is almost as ardent as Fil's. 😉
Awesome Fil! Only you would come up with the idea to interview the back-up vocalists to a star. Something they absolutely deserve to be recognized for- because it they didn't have that "it" factor? They wouldn't be there. Her voice could weave with George Michael's, extremely well. Their tonality was very similar, which allowed him to literally cause her to fade out, and sound like it's only him singing in parts, then she's PERFECTLY come back in. It's kinda like... doing a vocal dance, I guess we could say. Very important, when you have such non-static vocal dynamics, as this song does. And yeah, love to see you have her back again.
This was absolutely amazing. I loved how Shirley expressed her insights and took pride accomplishments as a background vocalist while reminding us that an inflated ego wasn't necessary to achieve them. I echo what some of the other ppl are saying about bringing her back as a guest--of course, if it's possible. Shirley gave me the impression that she was warm and genuine while maintaining her professionalism--that's something I don't see much of, if at all. Thanks so much, Fil for this wonderful collaboration!
Great stuff. Thanks for this and part 1 with Shirley. Please do more with her. It’s so good to hear how she worked with George and how he would perform.
It would be neat to do a video of Shirley and Elton John or whomever else she backed up. Then she could discuss how it was different. I’d be very interested in that. I’m sure others would be, too. Nice job today.
Just fantastic! I loved hearing Shirley reminisce about working with George, I loved her insights as a background vocalist. Most of all, I loved that there was no ego with Shirley except for the fact that she was proud to have done her best. And THAT she has every right to have pride in. Please bring her back for another song!
I loved that too, she seems like such a sweetheart.
She was Georges's backing vocalist for nearly 3 decades. Wouldn't she get same qualities like her boss? 😊
This was a privilege. What an adorable woman.
I couldn't stop smiling.
Yes please, the world needs more FREEDOM.
Adorable and ageless!
She's a true beauty...outside and inside. 🥰
Thank you Shirley I recognize you now on the live unplugged performances you are on the far left opposite the men and in the middle it's the price sisters. George loved your soulful as you put it voices of all you women and its truly brilliant!!!!

Shirley did an excellent interview. She was engaging and entertaining. She could be your sidekick! Very impressive!
Shirley’s happiness in the fulfillment of a life’s career to hear perhaps anyones greatest moments in retro, is enchanting.

I love your show.i learned so much about George Michael. he was so talented.he left us to early. To many of them are gone to soon..

She was so happy to do this, wasn't she? It's brilliant that Fil gave her a voice!
@@ginnyvogel7754 agree ☺️
Loved hearing shirley's take on father figure which adds she says is very gospel sounding. Shirley come back again your smile is so infectious. 🤘🏼
Hi guys, thanks for the chat 🙃 Shirley has the gift of blending timing and colour quality to the lead. Kudos to her, much obliged for sharing memories like these. 🎉
Such a great interview between the two of you Fil. RIP George Michael he was a great singer/musician. 👏
Shirley is such a joy to watch and listen too ! This is ( in my own opinion) the best interview/analysis you have done ❤
Thanks!
Agree 👍🏻❤
I truly forgot how much I loved that music, and memories of that time. Shirley brought that all back! Please do another one for us!
Another fun interview. I always learn. Thanks Fil😊🌷✨️🎙🎼

Henley!
Loved you two together! Yes have Freedom 90 - please and thank you.
Great that YOU were able to talk to Shirley Lewis.
Awesome video again. Shirley's idea of a video about backup singers is a good one. That would be very interesting. These 2 videos with her were excellent and it must've been so nice for her to hear his voice and hers isolated. It was awesome for us too. Thank you.
Fantastic! Wonderful! Amazing! 👏🏻👏🏻♥️♥️
Hi Fil,
This was a wonderful part 2!
That was fun and Shirley seemed so nice and must be easy to talk to ! She was a good guest and you Fil were a great host as usual !!!
That was excellent. Shirley seems like a very fun hang.
It was so refreshing to hear Shirley talk about the difference between a lead vocalist and a back up vocalist. She described the difference in how one performs and the need for listening beyond a basic skill. The singer must mimic the type of sound created by the lead and my job is to enhance with harmonies or depth to the vocal sound yet sound like one. Thank you Fil for conducting this interview and providing this analysis with Shirley Lewis. It has been a pleasure getting to know her. Rock!
Part 2 noted the use of vocal Effects, and again the choice of S.L. by the lead vocalist for resemblance in tone/sound.
This direction of your joint analysis results in a good definition of the role and approach of the backing vocalist as a force multiplier in any performance.
I missed Part 1 for five months (🔕at the time) , but now that I've found it I'm all over Part 2! 👏 Shirley's enthusiasm and appreciation for the music[al analysis] is almost as ardent as Fil's. 😉
That was fun ! I really enjoyed this interview. She’s great. I love powerful voices who can also be soft.
Awesome Fil! Only you would come up with the idea to interview the back-up vocalists to a star. Something they absolutely deserve to be recognized for- because it they didn't have that "it" factor? They wouldn't be there.

Very important, when you have such non-static vocal dynamics, as this song does.
And yeah, love to see you have her back again.
VERY WELL Said Rick !!
It's the actual tone of her voice matched Yog so well
This was absolutely amazing.
I really enjoy these type of analysis getting to hear behind the scenes of what we have taken for granted when we listen to a song
This analysis was great! I enjoyed it very much. Thanks Fil and Shirley! Please do Freedom!
Hi!
Part 2, enjoyed!! It was fun and very interesting.
Thank you, Shirley & Fil 🖤🤘🏽
To all the trolls who called Shirley a liar should go back and read the credits 🎼🎵🎶
Great stuff. Thanks for this and part 1 with Shirley. Please do more with her. It’s so good to hear how she worked with George and how he would perform.
Freedom!!!
I definitely thought that there were multiple women singing with George on the track. So interesting to find out it was just him and Shirley.
Priceless thankyou. Would be amazing to hear a lot of other songs with just the isolated vocals.
❤Beautiful
Fantastic pt 2. Thankyou
Ooh! I forgot to say in my comment.... Yes, please do 'Freedom' together!!! 😃🎶
So interesting! Loved this interview. 😊
A much loved song of mine and 2 beautiful voices.
Love it ! Thankyou both!! 😃👍🎄🤶🥰🎉
It would be neat to do a video of Shirley and Elton John or whomever else she backed up. Then she could discuss how it was different. I’d be very interested in that. I’m sure others would be, too. Nice job today.
“Heaven is a kiss and a smile,” one of my favorite lines in a song ever.
That was fascinating.
Those are beautiful guitars that you have
Fantastic!
I was hoping Shirley would have sung it through for us at the end.
