I saw George Michael at his 25 Live tour in Atlanta Georgia. I waited my whole life to see him in concert. From the moment he came out in Wham! until his untimely death, he was my favorite singer of all time. I still play his music quite frequently. I remember in the concert in Atlanta, something happened to his earpiece. He pulled it out of his ear and threw it over his shoulder and sang two songs without it. They got it fixed but those two songs sounded no different than any of the other songs he sang. George sang, he danced and he laughed and joked. There will never ever be another one like him.
YOU CAN TELL SHIRLEY WAS SOOOOO EXCITED TO DO THIS INTERVIEW. YOU CAN TELL THAT SHE FELT SO APPRECIATED TO REMINISCE ABOUT BEING ONE OF GEORGE BEST BAG UP SINGER. GEORGE MICHEAL WAS THE BRITISH SINGER EVER. HE COULD SINGER ANY SONG IN ANY TUNE, IN ANY NOTE. GEORGE HAD THE TALENT THAT MANY SINGERS PRAY FOR. THANK YOU WINGS OF PEGASUS FOR THIS. I ALLLLWAYYYSS, ALWAYS WANTED TO NO WHAT HIS BACK UP SINGERS WERE UP TO. REST ON HANDSOME GEORGE. YOU ARE REALLY, REALLY TRULY MISSED. ❤❤❤❤
Shirley is such a fabulous guest, you could really feel her enthusiasm. It was fascinating to watch Shirley’s expression as she relived the vocals, it was hard not to get a bit emotional as she reacted to George’s singing. And Fil is utterly charming here as well, even more so than usual. It was great to see Fil and Shirley getting on so well together.
Fil: You gave Shirley goosepimples when she heard George and herself again. She is filling in on parts that NO ONE KNOWS. It's a very private part of her life she shared with George and his absolute perfectionism for music and singing. He heard things that no one heard that made a huge difference in the world of music and Shirley is sharing that with us. Thank you so much. This is wonderful! ❤
Please. Please. Please. Show us the entire interview, even if you have to do it in six or seven parts. How amazing to get someone's memories/ impressions of a singer who didn't just sing with him once, but over 35 years. It's like interviewing a backup singer for Frank Sinatra. It's pure gold.
I’ve always believed, as a promoted singer, that George was the greatest as were his background vocalists. Every single inch is heaven. Now I’ll turn away as I’m still not over his loss. ❤
Shirley’s right, he was the perfect live singer. Of all the live performances I’ve seen in my life, George was the best I’ve ever heard. His voice was so emotionally powerful but completely effortless at the same time.
George's voice is truly beautiful, and very memorable. As for Shirley, she is appreciated by millions for her work with George. Fil, thank you so much for this analysis, giving us the chance to listen to George's voice in isolation, it makes an even more appreciable listening experience. Thank you Fil🤟
To hear his voice isolated from the instrumentation hit me with tears as to the loss of his talent. If I listen to one of his albums or hear him on the radio I'm ok. Enjoyed very much, the collaboration with Shirley Lewis.
This was not an interview...it was too intimate. Shirley contributed to the soundtrack of our lives, and for Fil to give her the spotlight, WOW. Looking at his voice, I think it would be impossible to auto-tune it. Anyone that attempts it should be tried for Crimes Against Humanity. Merci beaucoup, Bella.
Other great examples of the breathiness of George's vocals are "Cowboys and Angels" and "Praying For Time", both from his Listen Without Prejudice masterpiece. I absolutely love George Michael, his vocals have brought me to tears on many occasions and he could convey the agony behind some of his lyrics with the use of his voice. It was so earnest and yet tender at the same time. It's been far too long since I listened to any of his albums in full, this must be corrected. Thank you for this wonderful analysis with a wonderful lady, who probably has so many stories to tell about the beautiful man and his faultless voice.
Fil, it is awlays a pleasure lsitening to your amazing analyses. You bring such a great appreciation of the detail and the soul and you ALWAYS lift my ability to enjoy the artists and their performances. This was a special one. How good to be listening to George's voice in isolation, and to have Shirley sharing the experience of the song was a special treat. Lovely to see her joy as she relives the studio experience. I always have to STOP when I hear George Michael. What George gave the world in his songs and his performances truly is "something special, something sacred." George's voice carries emotion so profoundly and, Fil, you have helped me understand the amazing technicalities of how his voice does this. You have also given us an insight into the incredible technical skill of the accomplished backing vocalist. Thank you again. Bravo! Bravo tutti!
Oh George 😪 Your voice was so special. I loved it so much. You left us too soon. Thanks Fil & Shirley to give him the credit he deserve(s)d. 💔❤️🩹💜 Shirley, you sound amazing! 🩷 I never heard it like this.
Shirley Lewis is delightful in this interview. "Father Figure" is a landmark piece of music history -- a history in which Shirley plays a pivotal role -- and we get to enjoy the song in this intimate way with her. Every time she hops up in her chair with excitement at the beauty of the isolated vocals, I get a little teary-eyed.
This was fantastic. Funnily I had FF blasting out loud the other night thinking how fantastic it is. Shirley always appeared like someone you would like to know. I have never heard her speak before. This video confirms what a lovely person she is!
After listening to Shirley Lewis, I have gained more of an appreciation toward backing singers, how they can add the right touch to a song. Vocal groups and vocal duets that harmonize fall into another category. A lot of backing singers are excellent vocalist in their own right. to hear from Shirley Lewis and get her thoughts on things was a real treat.
Oh, Shirley is so lovely, and it’s absolutely exciting that you did this analysis with her. She’s rightly proud of her work with George Michael…and hearing how exacting he was, is testament to how talented she is. It’s amazing how well their beautiful voices worked together. I’m looking forward to Part 2, and so on.👏🤩. Thanks, Fil.
Can't wait to hear the next piece. I love George and his voice and music. He took you on a ride with one of his songs. He had such a gorgeous voice. You always feel better after listening to him sing. Thank you to Shirley and you for doing this analysis. It's a pleasure to hear it. Thanks again and take care.

@WingofPegasus @ShirleyHappiness I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching & listening to your analysis of George Michael's voice & his brilliant talent. I know absolutely nothing about the technical part of music or singing, but I do know how George's vocals & lyrics have touched my heart, soul & every emotion possible since I began listeningto him in the '80's. Listening to you so eloquently & passionately break down the technicalities of his performances feels like you're putting my feelings & reactions to his songs into words in ways I never could... I understand that Shirley Lewis started a solo career, but she was a faithful companion of George and the whole company, they got used to each other for many, many years and created wonderful things and songs. Thanks to them!
OMG what a treat! I loved your previous analysis videos of George’s songs and your appreciation of just how good he was! There are so many other channels doing “analysis” or “reaction” which consists of us looking at them looking at a screen and them going “mmm so good”. or “great instrumental”. You go so deep into how George made his music and why he was such a genius! Thank you and thank you Shirley, I didn’t realise it was you on backing, I heard other singers say he did all his own vocals in the studio and only used backing singers for live, but your voices were so perfectly matched that it’s hard ( for me, a non singer) to tell who is who at times. Brilliant job you lucky lucky girl! Can’t wait for parts 2- 20 (hopefully) x
I agree with many of your points. I've watched other 'reaction videos' but they don't have the knowledge that Fil does, not even close! I doubt that most of them have any knowledge of music or vocals at all. All I have to do is listen to our dear George and feel how he reaches into my heart and soul to know how a song affects me. Although, I do find it interesting to hear the pieces that made his vocals and delivery so great. Hearing from Shirley was terrific, especially with her vast experience singing with George for 35yrs! She must have had something very special for him to keep her with him for all those decades. It speaks volumes of her loyalty to him. What a great item to be able to add to your resumé. You can actually see in certain documentaries about George where they film inside the studio whilst recording or rehearsing which shows him interacting with the backing vocalists. The memories this would bring back for Shirley. I'd love to hear more from her experiences in future. The moment I went to 'subscriptions' on TH-cam and saw Fil had a video with a thumbnail that showed a picture of George, I couldn't click on fast enough! Can't wait for Part II and hopefully many more George Michael videos in future. PS. Don't forget the US rock n roll hall of fame, in which our dear one is nominated. We can all contribute, which I do every day. Crossing fingers.🇦🇺💖🕊
Goosebumps when the chorus kicked in that first time! Then again multiple times after, it’s very emotional to hear George’s voice isolated. Shirley is a total diamond and I loved hearing of her experience and input on the sound. I’m so glad that she joined you for this video. Looking forward to part 2.
George Michael, definitely the Ferrari of vocalists! Nice to see Shirley on your show. At the GM unplugged at the end of the song 'everything she wants', George and Shirley had a get- together. Til this day i asked myself what that was all about 😍
Wonderful conversation and analysis!! I now see it's Shirley in the unplugged acoustic performances George did, and also the price sisters are there too!!! Such talent it lives on and is appreciated, all of it!! Thank you Shirley for sharing!!
Well done, Fil! You can tell Shirley enjoyed doing this with you just as much as you did. My late mother was a trained opera singer and was very picky when it came to the voices of the artists her children listened to - especially pop artists. George Michael, however, was the one artist she loved listening to. Your breakdown of the vocals here makes it easy to tell why.
Gorgeous lady. She and Jay Henry always stand out to me. Also, shout out to Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame is still accepting votes. George is about 35k ahead of the pack. You can vote once everyday.
George will always be my favorite singer so I never ever tire of hearing a great in depth analysis of his voice and what he did to achieve his incredible vocals. George was such a private humble person so it's great to see that people like Shirley will share with us these tidbits of what made him great and what they enjoyed about working with him. Can't wait to hear more from Shirley since she knew him so well and it was obvious their voices blended as she was always with him.
I've always wanted to know more about backing singers. So many are women and they never seem to get their due. Thank you for bringing this beautiful, warm, and engaging woman, and her voice, forward.
Really great analysis with Shirley. So nice to hear how excited she was hearing this up close and personal. I never noticed how breathy George's voice was until this video. I noticed it before but not to this extent. Their voices do blend well. George had an incredible voice, and it is amazing how he can be so soft and breathy and hit the notes so hard at the same time. Incredible technique.
What an absolute treat to have Shirley on. Ive followed George's career for many years and you cant not know how Shirley loved him so much. Its such a delight to see how happy she is to hear him sing again. Shirley has some amazing singing sisters too and Ive listened to their podcast reminiscing about their singing lives.
Shirley is the best in the business!!!! Incredible backing singer!!!! And the backing vocal section of his band wrre second to none. Seen them in action twice....absolutely phenomenal team!!!!
With all this s*** that's going on in the world it's nice you just Drift Away and enjoy music at its best and smile along with people whilst listening. Thank you
This tribute to our very much loved "George Michael. " Made me so emotional 😢. I Miss him immensely. And so lovely to see Shirley and I love the collab of you both thank you so much Fil, I really appreciate it.
This is one of my new favorite videos. You and Shirley are both so human and the analysis is perceptive, enlightening and practical. What a treat, especially with the clear isolated vocals, although the instruments are an integral part of the original song. George Michael's voice is a combination of strength and breathy silky velvet. Wonderful singing technique examples, Fil
Wow what a treat!! Thank you so much for this It’s exhilarating and sad at the same time to hear George’s voice isolated like that .. the best concert I ever went to !! Thank you to your guest how lucky is she to have stood so close to the beautiful man Shirley has an amazing voice 👏🏽🙏🏽
Great interview and analysis. It's fascinating to hear Shirley recall so many moments relating to the recording. As always, your insight into an artist's voice is a learning experience, especially with a voice like George Michaels.
Fil, thanks so much for keeping George’s songs and memory alive. I always thought he was amazing, but it’s so nice to hear trained people like you that think that as well. I’ve always wondered what happened to this Shirley in his life. So I hope part 2 will give that info, if not, like you said, you have two hours of footage with her, just do another segment. 😊 I’ve never heard voices analyzed like this before and it’s incredible!
Thank you for providing the opportunity to all who watch this analysis to see the face and give credit to Shirley Lewis which MTV robbed from her by showing a photo of Shirlie Holliman (2:25-2:34). Shirley Lewis was the only backup singer chosen by George Michael for Faith album-that is an honor Wings of Pegasus has awarded to her after several decades of no recognition. Rock!
This is GREAT. I remember dancing to Father Figure at a club called Cafe Royale in Greensboro NC in 1988. best of times. My friend that was with us that night loved this song by George Michael. When it came on she said I have to dance to this song, so all three of us danced in together.. what a memory.
Shirley Lewis has such a great personality and the sound quality of her beautiful voice was the perfect match for George's unique voice. That alone is like magic. But to learn that she was able to adapt to his breathy and compressed singing style blows my mind completely. I loved getting insights into how both even watched each other breathing while recording. A musical match made in heaven! We're so blessed they worked together for decades! She couldn't have put it better when she described his voice as the "Ferrari of voices" ... gliding so effortlessly from compression to decompression while keeping his vocal cords open enough to stay breathy ... unparalleled gift 🥰🥰🥰! And: you've got a nice way with your interview partners, Fil! Very enjoyable to watch! Looking forwards to part 2!
Hearing from Shirley was incredible, what a divine guest, I loved this interview. I was incredibly lucky to see George Michael live, and he is still to this day, the best live singer I've ever heard. It was really nice to hear about how they sang together, in such great harmony.
This has brought tears to my eyes. Shirley's enthusiasm and big smile as she listens and talks about George, especially in a present tense which is wonderful. What an amazing privilege to have worked for so many years with George and have many wonderful memories 💜 Thank you Fil and Shirley, I can't wait for the next instalment 💜
Saw George Michael on the Faith tour. A friend had an extra ticket due to someone cancelling. What an incredible talent. I was very much into a different genre of music at the time. Eye opening and blew my mind. Gone too soon. Thank you for this!!
How did I miss this one? Thank you to Shirley Lewis for sharing your gift, insights and memories ❤ and to Fil for the excellent interview. R.I.P. to the brilliant and generous George Michael 💔
What a lovely conversation and Ms. Lewis has such a beautiful spirit. I loved when she said she was born to sing with George Michael and that he had the Ferrari of voices. I liked how she closed her eyes mostly listening to the the vocals because of course as a great singer she doesn't need to see the notes. I also loved how she said she never heard him do a bad note. One of the things I so enjoy about George Michael as an artist was that precision and perfectionism. Thank you so much to both of you! Rock!
I have sung this song on my IG. It's very difficult filled with complexities and can never be duplicated, even though I tried 🤣 Thanks for such an awesome video with great insight into this amazing piece of work. He is truly missed,
Great start to this joint analysis/interview. I always found this song to be so rich vocally. The lyrics are amazing as well. You be the desert I'll be the sea If you ever hunger hunger for me What ever you ask for that's what I'll be. This is my favorite part of this song. It highlights strong desires. Anyways I can't wait to see the rest of it Fil...rock on!
I am really enjoying this conversation between you and Shirley, and I can't wait to see the next part. I really like this song a lot, it's played here in the US all the time. George had an amazing voice as well as Shirley did as his backing singer. You and Shirley are talking like you've known each other for years. I'm standing by for part 2.
Wow what a fantastic interview with Shirley Lewis. It was great hearing George Michael, I always loved his songs. Great job Fil, I am looking forward to the next part of the interview. 👍❣
I don't get into George's music, but I can certainly appreciate and respect others that do! Just as I don't care for country music, I certainly can see other's getting into it! Just as I would hope people would respect my LOVE for hard rock, classic rock and roll, and metal! Thank you Fil!🌷
What a song! Fantastic voices! Goosebumps! Yes, Sir! I did enjoy Part 1. It was fun and very interesting. Can't wait to see/hear the rest. Thank you, Shirley Lewis & Fil for sharing your time and valuable insights with us. Sending a kiss to Heaven ✨ George Michael, We LOVE you 🖤🤘🏽
I have the utmost respect for professional backup singers, especially the ones are also musicians (regardless of whether they play any instrument other than their own). This was a really wonderful interview with the voice that helped make so many George Michael and WHAM's songs timeless treasures.
Thank you Fil for unraveling the Mystery of George’s other worldly voice! I listen to GM everyday and there is never an unsatisfying moment when lost in his music! God Bless from the Jersey Shore! Shirley is wonderful- a perfect friend and musical accompaniment to Our Guy!
I love that you focus on the backup singers. Shirley is wonderful, and it is touching how excited she still gets hearing herself and George on the recordings! Learned a lot today.
This interview is an integral aspect of music history; absolutely precious and priceless. I am crying to just be allowed to witness. Please bring Shirley back for Freedom. I will never be able to get enough nor will I ever be worthy, yet still I beg. ❤ "Sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime," hits different after a lifetime of torture and hatred for being trans. Lawrence v. TX and Obergefell have done nothing to relieve having to engage in criminal activity for survival, 20 years after Lawrence and transphobic violence is insane even in "blue" Colorado. Gonna burn this whole fucking place down if they don't stop murdering our babies. Motherfuckers shouldn't have ever let me survive to adulthood. This is war.
This is awesome, what a guest to have! If anyone had such a knowledge of George and his voice it's Shirley Lewis. She seems a lovely cheerful lady and very talented.. I can see how she and George would work so well together. Thank you for sharing.
Great inteview so far. It's really interesting to hear Shirley's memories. And it shows what an incredibly talented, amazing artist George Michael was.
This was such a pleasant interview and it was interesting to hear how Shirley worked with George in the studio. I also enjoyed listening to their isolated vocals as well. It was the perfect combination! Looking forward to part 2.
Wow it's just so crazy and cool to discover the identity of a woman whose voice I've been listening to since the late 1980s! George Michael's Faith album was sort of the soundtrack to my senior year in high school. All of those songs are permanently burned into my brain. I' think I'll take a listen to Faith today, so I can hear it with this new perspective, with an added layer of interest. I have to thank Shirley for the fantastic work she did on that album and thank both of you for making this video! :)
I truly loved this interview/analysis. Shirley is so down-to-earth, like a person you’d love from the get go. The interplay between her an Fil is funny, introspective and reminds me of 2 friends talking about someone they loved. Thanks Shirley, thanks Fil and love to all the ‘Wingers’. God bless you George-we still remember you. ❤ 14:03
First, please don't forget the rock n roll hall of fame - (US). Our lead vocalist from this video, plus all round greatest artist of all time - in my humble opinion, is nominated. Personally, I'd love more than anything for him to be awarded this honour. Please support GM. I do believe Backing Vocalists never receive the well earnt credit they deserve. If we heard a song without them present, we'd most definitely notice their absence. I always watch them during a video where they are filmed. Shirley is a joy to listen to and hear about her experiences working with such a legend as George Michael. What memories this must bring back for her. She certainly doesn't look old enough to have worked with him for 35yrs but it only proves the immense talent that she has to have been singing with him for all those years. Although, I don't need to know the technicalities of the vocal notes to know how a song makes me feel, I do find this quite interesting to listen to. As Shirley stated, George was very much the perfectionist and again it shows how much he saw in her to keep singing with her for that length of time. A particular video of George singing 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is a favourite of mine due to his delivery of the song. Normally, when an artist closes their eyes during a performance, it disconnects me with them but in this instance you can see the pain and emotion on George's face as if he is singing this from personal experience. What makes this live performance even more special is the manner in which the musicians are also effected and come across as if they are feeling this to their very core as well. It's a great video to watch due to the amount of emotion projected naturally by everyone on stage. I'm so looking forward to seeing the next part of this video and maybe in future, Shirley could grace us with her presence again to talk about other songs being discussed. She can certainly add so much about this great man that many of us hold up as a genius, especially myself. Thanks for another great video Fil. 🇦🇺🕊 PS. Fil, would you mind also taking a peek at George's live performance of Brother Can You Spare A Dime at the Pavarotti & Friends Concert that George gave a magnificent performance at? Both this and the one mentioned earlier of I Can't Make You Love Me. Thank you, Kris.💖
"... we'd sing together" imagine getting to SING TOGETHER with George Michael... goosebumps

I understand that Shirley Lewis started a solo career, but she was a faithful companion of George and the whole company, they got used to each other for many, many years and created wonderful things and songs. Thanks to them!
Shirley is a wonderful guest and I loved hearing her insights on George Michael. ❤
Til this day i asked myself what that was all about 😍
Well this was absolutely amazing. Shirley clearly enjoyed it too. Thanks so much Fil!
So great to see her delight in listening to the track!
This was awesome! Attention to detail was a hallmark of GM’s work and I’m so grateful Shirley could share her insights. Great work 🤩
What an absolute treat to have Shirley on. Ive followed George's career for many years and you cant not know how Shirley loved him so much. Its such a delight to see how happy she is to hear him sing again. Shirley has some amazing singing sisters too and Ive listened to their podcast reminiscing about their singing lives.
What a delightful lady! Behind every successful cliche ..., you know.😉
Shirley is the best in the business!!!!
Shirley and the other backup singers were the Best backup singers ever. The Best👏🏻♥️ George Michael was so lucky to have them all. Love you George🌹
Great video this........For Shirley to say she isn't very Soulful ,can someone tell her SHE has so much Soul.
Goosebumps-Thanks for sharing this-I still miss him so much ❤ pure genius-thanks Shirley - all my love ❤
❤ Yog. Thanks for the lovely memories, Shirley 😊
What a video and how amazing is Shirley ❤️ imagine being able to say that's your vocals with George ❤️❤️❤️
George my most favourite artist .
Aww I think this was emotional for lovely Shirley;I felt it.
An absolutely beautiful song ;you are missed gorgeous man;fly high angel ❤
What a lovely conversation and Ms. Lewis has such a beautiful spirit. I loved when she said she was born to sing with George Michael and that he had the Ferrari of voices. I liked how she closed her eyes mostly listening to the the vocals because of course as a great singer she doesn't need to see the notes. I also loved how she said she never heard him do a bad note. One of the things I so enjoy about George Michael as an artist was that precision and perfectionism. Thank you so much to both of you! Rock!
What a lovely person Shirley is.
Thanks for this Amazing Video... Amazing Memories...Amazing Shirley....Remembering George in our Hearts....
You be the desert
I'll be the sea
If you ever hunger hunger for me
What ever you ask for that's what I'll be.
This is my favorite part of this song. It highlights strong desires. Anyways I can't wait to see the rest of it Fil...rock on!
Feeling and hearing the love.... Fil you're awesome and authentic ...showing such respect to Shirley and George :) Great channel
Shirley matched him so well...thanks Shirley for helping him make this song so special!!!
Absolutely fantastic having a guest like Shirley
Gone but not forgotten!!!! Greetings from Greece ❤❤❤
I really liked that comment by Shirley how George had the ‘Ferrari of Voices’. I exactly get what she meant by that.
George Michael's music was the soundtrack to my college life and into my 20's. His songs were as if they were written about my life at that time.
👍😊
@@drewpall2598 🙋💕
What a song! Fantastic voices! Goosebumps!
Yes, Sir! I did enjoy Part 1. It was fun and very interesting. Can't wait to see/hear the rest.
Thank you, Shirley Lewis & Fil for sharing your time and valuable insights with us.
Sending a kiss to Heaven ✨ George Michael, We LOVE you 🖤🤘🏽
How nice is Shirley ; that smile and voice : need the next parts please
Very interesting, liked your analysis and I think Shirley liked it too. Can't wait for part two ( or part 3 ).
George Michael! He is on a short list of one of the best Male vocalists of time!
certainly one of the most beautiful
I have the utmost respect for professional backup singers, especially the ones are also musicians (regardless of whether they play any instrument other than their own). This was a really wonderful interview with the voice that helped make so many George Michael and WHAM's songs timeless treasures.
YT should have a LOVE button for things like this
Thank you Fil for unraveling the Mystery of George’s other worldly voice! I listen to GM everyday and there is never an unsatisfying moment when lost in his music! God Bless from the Jersey Shore! Shirley is wonderful- a perfect friend and musical accompaniment to Our Guy!
Shirley has an amazing voice. 😊
"Sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime," hits different after a lifetime of torture and hatred for being trans.
I always liked the way George Micheal sings. Pretty interesting singing and it's natural. I'm glad you analyzed George's voice.
This is awesome, what a guest to have! If anyone had such a knowledge of George and his voice it's Shirley Lewis. She seems a lovely cheerful lady and very talented.. I can see how she and George would work so well together. Thank you for sharing.
You guys are speaking the same language! Great interview, great lady! Looking forward to the next one...
I can see why he picked Shirley to sing with, they sounded so great together. Can’t wait for the continuation of this! Thanks Fil & Shirley!
Fil, that was the best and warmest episode yet. Maybe it's the subject, very special indeed. Cheers from Vegas
PS. Fil, would you mind also taking a peek at George's live performance of Brother Can You Spare A Dime at the Pavarotti & Friends Concert that George gave a magnificent performance at? Both this and the one mentioned earlier of I Can't Make You Love Me. Thank you, Kris.💖
