It's not hate or jealousy, it's just fact that vocal live performances can't be replicated pitch-wise to the millisecond like this unless it's the exact same recorded audio. I hope her fans understand what Fil is saying and she certainly isn't be the first to do it, but she has made the most money from it by far.

I saw Kate Bush live in 1979 - there were two songs with a lot of dancing involved. An announcement was made before each song that due to the complexity of the choreography Kate would be miming. Integrity and honesty is long gone in the music biz.

But..if she was singing to playback, say 70% to 30% live vocals in the mix, maybe the results would still show something similar right? I thought that was pretty accepted in the pop world these days. Who is really going for the vocal performance? They are going for the spectacle.

Joe Bonamassa just gave an interview where he was blasting miming at concerts. Paraphrasing, he said that the natural imperfections are what make a performance and that nothing is perfect. He works hard to get better all the time, not to be perfect. Humanity informs music and vice versa.

I am a singer/musician. I agree with you 100% here. No two audio files ever sound exactly the same to where you can overlap them on top of each other unless it’s the exact same audio file. In cases like this for super fans, I would suggest that you show an example perhaps someone who is singing the same lyric and two different cities so that the viewer can hear how similar it sounds, but also see how unsimilar it really is in the data.

So a couple things i would point out as a fan of taylor’s. I took my wife to her eras show in minnesota so i’ve seen the show. First, i absolutely believe there are parts of her show that she lip syncs plain and simple. Second, there are parts where i believe she is singing live over a backing track (she doesn’t try to hide that). Third, there are parts she is absolutely singing live. There are videos of her swallowing bugs mid singing and you hear her coughing and the singing stops. There’s videos of her singing the lyrics wrong or forgetting the lyrics. There’s videos of her laughing during her singing. I think it’s important to understand that this show is like 3.5 hours long and usually 3-4 days in a row week after week. It’s incredibly physically and vocally demanding so i really don’t think it’s any surprise that parts of the show are not live vocals. Would be curious to look at more songs from the tour to get a better idea of how much is live vocals

Couldn’t agree more. It’s a 3.5-hour show. She’s giving the chance to her fans to enjoy all together as much music, and, well the eras, as she can. It’s a whole experience to sing loudly with other fans, which festivals somehow has also taken away with just 1 hour-1.5 hours performances if you’re lucky just to grab as much money as they can (like any business in this industry) every year.

Nightwish lost their vocalist just before a gig. Backtrack was one of their option, but they said they can't do that. Two singers from another band stepped up and learned the songs as well as they could and sang from papers since they didn't have time to learn the lyrics.
After that their second vocalist took over for the next gigs until the singer came back and got new singer soon after that.
Not sure which one would have been better, but fans got a show and it was live.
I don't really mind backtracks, but I think they should be open about it. Then people can really choose how much it matters. I am pretty sure that those shows would sell out anyway because of the show and atmosphere.
Integrity is one of many virtues that are disappearing.

Ashley & Jessica were industry plants who never had any real hits. Taylor has stood the test of time for 20 yrs. They don’t allow industry plants to become more powerful than her own label. Everyone can see she uses a backing track and sings over it during parts of her concerts. They don’t need Fil to show them. The problem I see is several fold, it’s implying she does it throughout her entire show and doesn’t sing at all; people are coming here to use it as a basis to criticize her for everything when he has shown some of the greatest singers in history do this, yet the outrage isn’t there, it seems the comments are skewed and just given people a reason to voice their hate; he has made his point but in 13 days put out 3 Taylor videos which have generated more views than his other videos this entire month combined, therefore he is just like everyone else using her popularity to make money; people are failing to understand her show is several levels, it not just vocal performance it’s an experience. I’ve been to several concerts in my long life, this is an entire patience; it’s well known that heavily produced pop uses this backing tracks with heavily choreo’d pieces, notice his tiny desk is not pinned anywhere I couldn’t find it, showing she’s actually singing live wouldn’t bring the clicks; he isn’t showing parts of her concert that are acoustic and just her. Her concerts are an experience. You don’t have to like the experience, or her, or her songs, but he’s shown she is doing nothing different than some of the greatest vocalists in history & greatest if not the greatest performer in history did it. True. As a vocal coach for 20 years I agree, and Taylor does sound different every night on The Eras tour too. But 1989 is in her perfect placement of her voice. Anyone who goes to the show or if you have a musical ear can hear the imperfections in her live voice even through the streams. For anyone who doubts go listen to a live stream, you will clearly hear her live voice cracks and off key moments through the whole night. However she is a really good vocalist and sings live 100% of the entire show. That is a fact.

I’ve NEVER seen a performer stand in the rain - for a short time - she stayed out the entire time. She spent every minute giving the audience the same show as every other show. I love and prefer live vocals. But in a world where the audience records every second - I don’t blame her one bit for using a track. She played guitar & piano - to music that she wrote. Performed them while dancing & adding incredible videos. I’ve seen U2, Madonna, Metallica, Wynonna, lenny Kravitz, Pearl Jam, The Cure, etc… and despite the potential for not live vocals - her show stood out. I'm a boomer that graduated from high school in the late 70's. Back then there was no autotune or other computer generated sounds. We didn't have computers or cellphones.
Part of the wonder of music back then, is that when you were at a concert and hear live harmonies you knew, without dought, that it was authentic.
Some of the best harmonizing bands from that era are; Three Dog Night, Beach Boys, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Momas and the Popas, Queen, Eagles, ending with Simon and Garfunkel. I could list many more.
The problem with the talent now is that you really don't know how talented they are until they sing something unplugged. There is way too much computer aided sound tech out there now. I'll not be surprised if the next great vocalist is an AI singing through a virtual body.

Not saying it makes it OK, but I don't recall the last time I watched a "live" production for sale that wasn't completely touched up in post (pitch corrected, parts resung, etc). It's sad, but it's the standard by which artists feel the need to live up. Playing devil's advocate, I truly believe we'd see JUST as much (possibly worse) blowback if the entire Eras Tour was 100% live, and she missed notes, dropped keys ("it doesn't sound like the radio!"), or skipped songs altogether because she's human sometimes you wake up and your voice says "not today!". (II've been a career singer and guitar player for coming up on 30 years. One thing I have learned is with singing, I just have to do my best to care for my voice and work around my human limitations). So it seems to be they are just trying to pander to the majority. The majority public is trained to expect the live concert to sound like what they heard on the radio. That is all but impossible without the heavy backing tracks and assisted live singing in a show that runs 3 1/2 hours, 3 nights in a row. As the author of a series of software synthesis apps that utilized wavetable synthesis (i.e. synthesis based on digital sampling of real instruments and vocals) I've done quite a lot of detailed analysis of recorded audio. One thing Fil doesn't mention here is that you can often have two digital recordings of something that to the human ear sound absolutely identical, but when viewed at the level of individual samples you can see very pronounced and obvious differences (anybody can see this phenomenon for themselves by comparing an uncompressed digital recording of literally anything with the same recording compressed via a "lossless" algorithm and then uncompressed back to raw digital - no human ear can detect a difference but the samples look visible different). The fact that these recordings of "different" Taylor Swift live performances look absolutely identical (even with just pitch analysis software, not views of the raw samples themselves) is DAMNING. There is a 0% chance this is anything but lip-syncing.

Before anyone makes any comment about what I have to say below, I watched the whole video and listened to everything the creator had to say. I was recommended this video because I’m a Swiftie, interested in the technical side of things and the “biz”.
There’s no denying that some parts of this show are lip synched, it’s obvious. I’ve watched many clips of many shows and I knew something was going on shortly into the tour because she is on pitch 99% of the time. However, I don’t think she’s lip syncing the whole way through. There’s been instances she’s spoken mid line and the vocal stops. My guess is that amongst the lip synched moments when she’s actually singing it’s still heavily pitch corrected in real time- though there are still (less) moments that she’s slightly off pitch. If you compare it to other tours, it’s still very different. I also don’t think Style was probably the best example to use for this either. I’d be more interested to see an analysis of perhaps surprise acoustic songs she’s played a few times. Also… the show is 3.5 hours long so I would be more surprised if she was singing 3-4 shows in succession fully live for that amount of time.
There can be plenty of discussion around why people pay for this and truthfully, I think non-fans will not understand unless they themselves are a fan of something else in the same way. It’s not solely about the live music, it’s about the energy and culture of being there. It’s about lyrics that we resonate with and many many people, particularly young women, grew up with. Her music was there to support us when we needed it. Nostalgia is also a big selling point for millennials and gen z, and The Eras Tour is all about that.
As I mentioned, I’m a huge fan of Taylor and am always open to have a critical discussion about her. What I think bothers me about the type of discourse this can create (this is nothing against the creator, I enjoyed the video and felt that it was constructive) is that it can make some people feel like they need to be insufferable and pretentious on both sides of the argument. Let people enjoy what they want to enjoy. The resale, merch and capitalism of it all is a different discussion, but the base discussion of why even see her at all is relatively easy to understand.

Taylor swift without digital voice altering is naturally quite pitchy. Generally having wide range on a specific note. And that can be trained in a bit but generally you will still have a decent amount of fluctuations between different performances. Then the timing should never be spot on. Because if she was a fantastic performer she would have a dialogue with the spectators and exchanges both verbal and nonverbal and it’s these nonverbal ones. Like you see the crowd is into it and you run through the last verse and chorus an extra time. Or the chorus one extra time. Or hold a note longer in one performance than in a past one. Maybe the tempo goes up a bit. Or maybe it slows down. The point being is that you honestly can’t have it be identical time and time again.
I don’t like going to a concert and then finding out that the live version isn’t any different than the recorded one.

It's clear to me she's worked on her voice over the years,, and in the intimate close quarters songs she did was anything but pitchy. She had great control, breath support, and nuance. All the calling cards of someone who's put in the work with vocal coaches. So I have to disagree, just based on what I saw last night. Maybe she has pitchy nights. She's human. But last night wasnt' one of them. (I am of course not talking about the pieces with backing tracks, which as a musician I was fully aware of. Those were clearly songs they put production and choreography over vocal performance. The small scale stuff was all live and executed quite well in my humble opinion. )

I've watched 3 or 4 live phone recordings of ' Who's afraid of Little Old Me' and the vocal delivery is always note perfect and her mouthing is always a 100% believable. Not being at all tech savvy, I imagined she sang along to a very smart backing track that allowed her to chime in and out of the performance whenever it suited her. Surprised she's getting away with 100% mime, although I imagine this might not apply to her acoustic and piano performances.

There is no evidence that the Eras Tour is 100% mime. You cannot take a small part of one song where she is miming and from that conclude the whole performance - or even the rest of the song - is mimed. It is dishonest to even imply that. I do not think Fil intended that but that is how it is perceived. Fil should at least clarify, better, check out more of the tour.

Are you serious... In the beginning of the video I was literally saying to myself "It'll be cringe if he analyses the song Style". As a vocalist I 100% noticed this song and some other songs from the same 1989 era she didn't fully sing live (those are the "dancy" songs with quite hard vocals). Especially this one. But it's so incorrect to say that the entire tour is not worth it because of some songs being like that in the tour that has 40+ SONGS and lasts 3/5 hours. If you analysed at least 1 song from each Era, you'd understand that you're wrong. Unfortunately, in this case you didn't conduct a research - you knew the results beforehand and just picked the song to prove your point.

The disappointing thing about someone like Taylor Swift miming on her live shows is not that she shouldn't be able to get away with it, because a lot of performers do, but that it goes against everything that she purportedly stands for: chiefly, artistic integrity and emotional sincerity. That's what she has built her whole career on. If she's unable to be a real live performer while singing songs about her true feelings and thoughts, then she really is just a con artist. I don't like con artists, and I think people who allow themselves to be scammed by con artists are feeding and enabling the scam.

Other artists also do this. I won’t out them here, but also they could play some parts from the recording and some parts live. That’s also done

It’s a 3.5 hour show, of course she’s not singing the whole time, and especially not the songs she’s performed hundreds of times at this point. But I’d say a majority of the show is sung live. Literally every single concert has been recorded and broadcast on live stream, and you can hear her. There have been several times where she acknowledges something going on in the crowd mid lyric and her audio doesn’t continue to play. At a recent performance her in-ears malfunctioned and you see how much it messed with the performance, which would not be the case if she was just mouthing along. I think it would be a lot more telling if you did this analysis with anything off of folklore, evermore, midnights, TTPD, or lover (besides Cruel Summer). Also ticket prices are only what they are if you’re buying resale. The FV tickets are in line with industry standard at this time in this market. Seeing big artists for $2 is a thing of the past ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think by now it is easier to list the artists that do not lip sync or mime their instruments. I used to go to a lot of concerts (around 50 per year) back in the day, but it has entirely lost its attraction. No desire to pay a lot of money to end up in a crowd that does not care and is there only to be able to put on social media they were there. All this while looking at miming artists, regardless whether it is the singing or the instruments. The latter I experienced the most blatant example with Skillet where I went as my young son is a fan. Bass, guitar....mime galore. Just frustrating......

The answer is simple really, Taylor Swift can’t play a instrument or sing outside of a grade 2-3 level, she is not a singer, not a artist not even a entertainer, she is a business and the product is Taylor Swift. She will rightfully never be remembered as a musician because her singing and lackluster writing is a prob the worst we’ve heard in two decades and her cult following can only take focus away from that for so long.

    • @PhysicalMediaPreventsWea-bx1zm
      @PhysicalMediaPreventsWea-bx1zm 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

Everything you've said is incorrect. She IS a singer...not the best for sure but certainly not the worst. She plays guitar and piano well enough to write songs but doesn't claim to be an instrumentalist. Neither did Elvis. She is definitely an artist and most definitely an amazing entertainer. No one who has seen her show can claim they weren't thoroughly entertained. Saying she is nothing more than a business creation is a pathetic excuse to try and take away her accomplishments. If it was as easy as that then why is she the only one at this level? Why aren't they doing it with everyone? Because it's not true. And even if it was, well, she makes all her own business decisions too, so you can't take away credit from her that way either. 😂
