It's not hate or jealousy, it's just fact that vocal live performances can't be replicated pitch-wise to the millisecond like this unless it's the exact same recorded audio. I hope her fans understand what Fil is saying and she certainly isn't be the first to do it, but she has made the most money from it by far.
Nah, this video is weird and absurd and I hope Taylor’s team take a legal action of this “miss leading video”! P.S. Why didn’t you show us the acoustic LIVE Performances when it’s just Taylor Swift with her guitar and piano?
@romirosta1917 the software Fil Runs is available to the public. If your interested in truth, run her voice through the analysis software yourself. You might be surprised.
I saw Kate Bush live in 1979 - there were two songs with a lot of dancing involved. An announcement was made before each song that due to the complexity of the choreography Kate would be miming. Integrity and honesty is long gone in the music biz.
But..if she was singing to playback, say 70% to 30% live vocals in the mix, maybe the results would still show something similar right? I thought that was pretty accepted in the pop world these days. Who is really going for the vocal performance? They are going for the spectacle.
lol are you kidding me? In the early 90's I worked in EMS backstage for a Cher concert. She was running about an hour late and the entire time they had a GUY dressed up as her on stage lip syncing. The dude looked exactly like her, it was an Italian guy. I saw him before and after her arrival, from makeup to exiting the stage.
Yeah, you’re right. I’ve been in the studio 1 million times. There’s not even the hint of it being a double tracked vocal. Everything is in sync. Everything is in pitch not one variable.
Joe Bonamassa just gave an interview where he was blasting miming at concerts. Paraphrasing, he said that the natural imperfections are what make a performance and that nothing is perfect. He works hard to get better all the time, not to be perfect. Humanity informs music and vice versa.
Joe also said in another interview (I'm going from memory here) that he much preferred doing live shows instead of time he has to spend in the studio because he tends to keep trying to get it perfect in the studio, whereas when he plays live he just sends it and its out there forever, warts and all.
I am a singer/musician. I agree with you 100% here. No two audio files ever sound exactly the same to where you can overlap them on top of each other unless it’s the exact same audio file. In cases like this for super fans, I would suggest that you show an example perhaps someone who is singing the same lyric and two different cities so that the viewer can hear how similar it sounds, but also see how unsimilar it really is in the data.
yes!! the audience, vocal mix, even the venue’s architecture would render different harmonics even if the song was played the exact same way if not mimed (as explained at around 3:50)
It's sad. It's like if youre going to listen to dance music you know what you're listening to. When you go to a vocalists performance you would hope it was live but really they just have a dj in a hidden booth swapping tracks. This is also why I feel ghost production needs to stop being pushed as well. That's my opinion tho.
I saw Cher perform in 2001. She announced that since she had a sore throat, she would he lip syncing! Still loved the show. And appreciated her honesty!
I'm almost 60 and for most of my life I played drums and sang bands. I knew in the first three seconds of her singing that it had to come out of a studio.
So a couple things i would point out as a fan of taylor’s. I took my wife to her eras show in minnesota so i’ve seen the show. First, i absolutely believe there are parts of her show that she lip syncs plain and simple. Second, there are parts where i believe she is singing live over a backing track (she doesn’t try to hide that). Third, there are parts she is absolutely singing live. There are videos of her swallowing bugs mid singing and you hear her coughing and the singing stops. There’s videos of her singing the lyrics wrong or forgetting the lyrics. There’s videos of her laughing during her singing. I think it’s important to understand that this show is like 3.5 hours long and usually 3-4 days in a row week after week. It’s incredibly physically and vocally demanding so i really don’t think it’s any surprise that parts of the show are not live vocals. Would be curious to look at more songs from the tour to get a better idea of how much is live vocals
Same. I think this is mindblowing for some people, but I don't go to concerts to hear a band or a singer singing live, my main expectation is to enjoy the experience.
How do people not understand this? I made this logical conclusion when the tour first started and someone made a comment about how she does everything live 3-4 hours a day for multiples days a week. It’s literally impossible.
Well put! It's obvious some of her songs lend themselves to actual live performances more than others. I believe they tastefully selected the songs she sings live and the ones she doesn't, and it didn't take away from the experience. Everyone still had an amazing time. :)
Couldn’t agree more. It’s a 3.5-hour show. She’s giving the chance to her fans to enjoy all together as much music, and, well the eras, as she can. It’s a whole experience to sing loudly with other fans, which festivals somehow has also taken away with just 1 hour-1.5 hours performances if you’re lucky just to grab as much money as they can (like any business in this industry) every year.
Most memorable was when Queen always left the stage during the operatic section of Bohemian Rhapsody as they couldn’t play it live. They didn’t want to take credit for something they weren’t playing.
Nightwish lost their vocalist just before a gig. Backtrack was one of their option, but they said they can't do that. Two singers from another band stepped up and learned the songs as well as they could and sang from papers since they didn't have time to learn the lyrics. After that their second vocalist took over for the next gigs until the singer came back and got new singer soon after that. Not sure which one would have been better, but fans got a show and it was live. I don't really mind backtracks, but I think they should be open about it. Then people can really choose how much it matters. I am pretty sure that those shows would sell out anyway because of the show and atmosphere. Integrity is one of many virtues that are disappearing.
I always hated when Queen did that. I would have preferred they had a choir do the parts instead, but I imagine that would have been costly to bring a choir on tour. But I've seen other bands use choirs on tour, hiring local choirs in the cities they're in.
that's because taylor didn't get famous for her singing, she got famous because of her songwriting. Besides, the show is still very magical to watch, no matter if it's 100% live or not...
@@liste302 she got famous, because she is young and looks good and she can sing. That attracts young people in about the same age that feel "oh, that could be me, she is just like me". A new idol for a new generation.
@@josephhorswell4839 SNL is LIVE that’s why and she handled it poorly. At a 3.5 hour show you get more than one 2 songs with nothing else. Ashley & Jessica were industry plants who never had any real hits. Taylor has stood the test of time for 20 yrs. They don’t allow industry plants to become more powerful than her own label. Everyone can see she uses a backing track and sings over it during parts of her concerts. They don’t need Fil to show them. The problem I see is several fold, it’s implying she does it throughout her entire show and doesn’t sing at all; people are coming here to use it as a basis to criticize her for everything when he has shown some of the greatest singers in history do this, yet the outrage isn’t there, it seems the comments are skewed and just given people a reason to voice their hate; he has made his point but in 13 days put out 3 Taylor videos which have generated more views than his other videos this entire month combined, therefore he is just like everyone else using her popularity to make money; people are failing to understand her show is several levels, it not just vocal performance it’s an experience. I’ve been to several concerts in my long life, this is an entire patience; it’s well known that heavily produced pop uses this backing tracks with heavily choreo’d pieces, notice his tiny desk is not pinned anywhere I couldn’t find it, showing she’s actually singing live wouldn’t bring the clicks; he isn’t showing parts of her concert that are acoustic and just her. Her concerts are an experience. You don’t have to like the experience, or her, or her songs, but he’s shown she is doing nothing different than some of the greatest vocalists in history & greatest if not the greatest performer in history did it. Should TH-camrs be legally required to tell us when they fail to mention that from the 46 songs set, some are fully live, some are fully mimed and most fall somewhere in between? Isn't that misleading? You now believe she never sings live.
@@malva-yk2jg I now believe, based on this video, that a single Taylor Swift vocal was used four times, including three live shows. I have no opinion on whether she ever sings live, but I won't believe any assertion she NEVER mimes. I also don't hate Taylor Swift. My daughters love her. Unless she literally lies to the audience - which neither Fil nor I assert - I have no bone to pick. I love music. And I am a MAJOR fan of Taylor Swift's business acumen!!!
@ It depends on what you consider a performer. I will give her props for being a great business woman and a spectacular self-promoter. Her song writing abilities are adequate for her audience. As for her singing………meh. It has been very well documented that her voice is generally below average and requires a LOT of auto tuning. Now, you add that she lips syncs on stage AND charges exorbitant ticket fees….sounds sketchy and even a but fraudulent. I think her fans deserve better.
Taylor Swift in concert if a sore throat has voice over protection add in all she has to do is raise micro phone in the air and her voice over sound comes in and saves the day, the audience doesn't even notice because there high on Taylor Swift moving around on stage.
As a singer I can tell you each vocal performance is different. It is effected by Weather, Food Drink, Sleep, and how you feel that day. You never feel the same everyday. It’s always different.
True. As a vocal coach for 20 years I agree, and Taylor does sound different every night on The Eras tour too. But 1989 is in her perfect placement of her voice. Anyone who goes to the show or if you have a musical ear can hear the imperfections in her live voice even through the streams. For anyone who doubts go listen to a live stream, you will clearly hear her live voice cracks and off key moments through the whole night. However she is a really good vocalist and sings live 100% of the entire show. That is a fact.
@@helloheyo4ever @yara5502 So you're saying this analysis isn't conclusive proof of her lip syncing? She's so absolutely perfect in every performance irregardless of weather, temp, mood, etc? Really?
My adult daughter told me once that I was naive expecting anyone in concert to actually be singing. She insisted that no one could dance like that and still sing. Broadway performers do that 8 shows a week, and (fingers crossed!) none of them are lip syncing. Of course, she also refused to believe that I could hear auto-tune/pitch-correction. I feel very old.
@@VikingAwayFromHome I was just going to say this, But it is well known in the industry, and it is the exception, not the rule. 99.99% of those performances are completely live and always part of my response to people who say that you can't expect a concert to have live singing when they are also dancing. Unfortunately, the practice of pitch correcting studio recordings has made its way into the musical theatre world, and it's devastating.
She’s performing three nights a week, for 3.5 hours each night on a tour that’s last 2 years. It’s both amusing that people are denying her lip syncing and also that people are surprised she is lip synching. Of course she is, the tour is basically a Vegas performance at the point.
I'm a vocalist with many, many years of experience in different settings and groups. I've learned that some can actually handle a great deal more singing than others, without flinching from such a load. Taylor is vocally weak, if not an untalented charlatan.
Its no secret & only normies think its real at concerts but unfortunately normies are the reason these so called "artists" keep doing it because they are 99% of their fanbase. They also believe they write & produce their own songs
Yes I agree, I started going to gigs in the 70's. Think we were fortunate to be young at possibly the best time for enjoying live music, and music generally.
I worked for one of the biggest promoters in the country, late 70s through the 80s, and worked many hundreds of shows. Many acts multiple times like the Stones, Who, Dead, Journey, U2 and while those all sounded great there was no way they could be immaculately consistent every time. The performances were unadulterated and therefore not absolutely perfect but they sure where an expression of pure talent. Nothing else needed. The fans knew what they were hearing and loved it.
They really don't. Miming to your own vocal is one thing and possibly even necessary in some situations or cases... what they did was mime to someone else's singing. They were a totally fake manufactured act hired for their looks and their looks only. It was a scam.
I can separate the two sides of it. She's dark? Yes. Her lyrics are corrupting young minds? Yes. Her behavior as a woman is not acceptable, considering she's touted as a role model? Yes. She's extremely dangerous. As a dancer, she performs quite well. She's not Michael Jackson quality, but she's good. Her performance voice wise? She is praised for her vocals, and just how professional she is. Well, undeniably she isn't performing as she claims, as her propaganda machine claims, as her cultist followers claim. So, on top of all the negative things she represents, she's unprofessional and fooling her audience. That's a one big nail in the coffin thing. If she isn't even performing, why are fans following her? That's the crux.
shes just boring ~ her voice is boring nothing special ~ her songs are boring ~ i have listened & not one melody has even stuck in my mind ~ even listened to acoustic tiny desk concerts ~ nothing there ~ boring boring boring ~ she is pretty ~ she likes staging fashion shows ~ pop is just that ~ air fizz nothing ~
The analysis is brilliant! It's sad that Swift won't own it. I personally expect to hear a unique performance when I attend a "live" concert, but apparently Swift's fans don't seem to mind so much.
When she was accused by Dave Grohl, she said during a performance that “My band plays live for over 3 hours”. She did not say that she sung live. Words matter.
@@jimijam1963 Generally, acts like Taylor's utilize backing tracks for both the band and the singer(s). The band very well could be playing along with the backing track, And they can honestly claim to be "playing live", even if that's not what (or all) you're hearing
Except she does sing live at the very least partially on most of her songs. And she has quite a few songs each night that are literally just her and a guitar or her and the piano. Also, the Dave Grohl beef was manufactured AF. There are interviews from not even that long ago where he gushes over her. People need to find other things than successful and talented women to bitch about.
I saw Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions - legendary R&B groups for $2 a ticket in the late 1960's. They crowded their backup and trio onto a small movie theater stage and it was MAGIC. I doubt if all of them, including the band got $1,000 AND they paid their own travel.
@@DanielLiebert-i1p Wow, synchronicity! Would've loved to see that. I saw Curtis Mayfield in ~'93 in Negril Jamaica ... at the small resort in which we stayed.
@@FOH3663 This was after his group fame but before his solo 'Superfly' fame. Later at a show a heavy piece of equipment fell on him and was paralyzed and soon died forgotten.
This is a cool educational video but I don’t get all the blind hate comments. I thought it was obvious to everyone that there was a backtrack that is playing at varying levels throughout the concert. With that, she is also singing live. You can absolutely hear her voice coming through in most of the songs. A production that big is going to be a better performance with a backtrack, especially with that big of a stage and that long of a show. I think they made the best decisions to make it the best show while also pulling back the track at other places to let her live voice come through l.
I was a stagehand for one of her shows back in '10/'11, the tour with the water wall. The entire show, minus the backing band, was fake. They had this taiko "drum battle" between Taylor and some redhead and the keyboard player was triggering the drum sounds every time they pretended to hit the drum. We had a good laugh about it.
I had the great pleasure of catching the ABBA hologram show at their arena in London earlier this year. I can tell you that the backing band does not play live to a click, but simply mimes. Now, my wife (who is not a musician) was moved to tears by the show, and couldn't fault it. So I guess it's each to their own. 😊
That's the price on secondary market I believe. There are groups who swoop in and buy all of the tickets they can. Which with online sales there's no way to really stop it, not when the resellers can use bots to buy up the bulk.
Whatever happened to singers just singing? Why do they all feel like they need to be dancers too? You buy their music because you like it. You listen to the radio to HEAR them. Why do they think people even give a crap if they dance when its live in concert? Whitney didn't dance around. Celine didnt dance around. Barbra didnt dance around! Its ridiculous! If you want to be a dancer, then dance. If you're a singer, just sing. Concerts dont have to be Broadway extravaganzas. If i wanted a Broadway show I'd go see a Broadway show!
@@dominiqueprice3304 And you think Broadway people aren't miming the musical bits too? Get some recordings from a couple of different shows and analyze them - I bet you'd be surprised.
I've noticed that it's much harder to sing well if you're doing something else (like accompanying yourself on the piano). You only have so much brain capacity and doing two tasks at once (even if they are well learned and almost instinctive) degrades your performance on both. I imagine dancing would badly mess with your breathing.
I have seen hundreds of concerts. Taylor’s show was more like a Broadway show - not just a concert. The show was so well done. I saw her in Foxborough and it rained hard for 3 hours. I’ve NEVER seen a performer stand in the rain - for a short time - she stayed out the entire time. She spent every minute giving the audience the same show as every other show. I love and prefer live vocals. But in a world where the audience records every second - I don’t blame her one bit for using a track. She played guitar & piano - to music that she wrote. Performed them while dancing & adding incredible videos. I’ve seen U2, Madonna, Metallica, Wynonna, lenny Kravitz, Pearl Jam, The Cure, etc… and despite the potential for not live vocals - her show stood out. I’m not a young fan - I brought my teenage kids. She was great. Truly.
Not the same thing at all. Taylor probably performed it live like they do at the Super Bowl and then is miming that live performance so it’s live sounding.
Not even remotely the same. If Taylor Swift was miming tracks performed by an anonymous vocalist and taking credit for those vocals, then that would be an appropriate comparison.
wow, I thought you were going to compare all those shows in SEQUENTIAL ORDER. I was listening to the audio thinking okay, that's the first show AND it's clearly autotuned. That maj 3rd is exactly the same pitch EVERY time she hits it.... then when you stopped the vocals.... only then it hit me.... he's playing ALL FOUR SHOWS SIMULTANEOUSLY. wow. it sounds like ONE vocal, not four different vocals layered over each other. If it was live, you'd get this huge vocal quadrupling effect but no, a singular pitch is coming through. That's all the proof one needs. Next...
@@chaos.corner "The only problem is, if you mix nearly identical recordings, you're likely to get weird phasing and beat effects." only if the phase IS shifted and if you have 4 DIGITAL recordings playing, then the timing is going to be EXACT because guess how the recordings of the shows were made. Digitally. So, the 4 voices will stay in sync and all you need to do is start them on time and again, if it were 4 different live vocals, you would have a CHORUS effect or doubling effect going on. There is not one going on here. Nor is there a cancelling from phase shift because they are not phase shifted. You could do that but that's another test.
I made the mistake of infuriating K-pop fans one time. I don’t even remember why - it was something trivial and not even any kind of actual dis But wow. They were really mad! Wishing you the best, Fil!😂
🔥yeah cause when he only analyzed 30 seconds of an obviously lip synching part its confirmation bias. She sings live on so many other parts, but he doesn't speak a word of that. Fil can go on his world tour and sing live for 3.5 hours straight, 3 days a week as a soloist, just to prove the boys on youtube wrong....and then deal with permanently damaged vocal chords because that's literally not humanly possible🔥
@@Mina-12128It IS indeed possible to sing for 3,5 hours straight no breaks. I just did it yesterday. But I didn’t change any clothes on stage though😃. Proper vocal technique and a fit body no problems. And to do it night after night, just get your sleep and drink water.
Rush played 2 hour and 45 minute shows into their late 60s. Geddy Lee played bass, keyboards, bass pedals and sung. Sometimes all at the same time....and with zero pitch correction.
Sir Paul McCartney, at age 82 is still playing 3 hour concerts! Although Sir Paul's band does take a break, not Sir Paul. He never leaves stage. He plays bass, several guitars (electric & accoustic), mandolin, & keyboards. Sir Paul also sings & tells stories, some are humorous. At present, he is appearing in South America.
For a 3-hour show, of course she'd have to mime some parts. She's also dancing in crazy outfits and giving a full-on performance. I don't think it's much of a big deal. When I sing, I can only even last an hour at most before my vocal chords get fried.
Story for you from across the pond: my daughter’s college music professor actually worked with Swift some years ago. He remarked that her voice was fsr more “tweaked” than people realized.
That's why I'm SO EXCITED to be seeing IRON MAIDEN November 16th. I got my ticket ALMOST A YEAR AGO. Maiden is 100% legit live. Milli Vanilli were also not singing the songs they were lip synching to. But then again, with all the autotuning going on, Taylor Swift isn't singing her own songs either. The times, they are a changing.
For them it was slightly different because not only were they miming, but the guys "singing" (miming) in concert weren't even the real guys who recorded the song.
you can't compare, cause milli vanilli didn't even sing on their records. they didn't sing, period. imagine the uproar if it was revealed that taylor swift did the same thing, that she had someone else to sing for her.
I'm Gen X. Grew up on rock concerts where we held up real lighters and nobody had a camera or a damn phone recording themselves to post on social media. I saw them all in person, from Metallica to Elton John, and never once were people pretending to sing. The flaws in their instruments or voices were glorious, because it was all them. I would be nothing but flipping angry if I went to some silly concert today. It would be boring to me. I am grateful to have come up when I did.
I don't know if "boring" is even the word for it. I would say "numbing." It's sensory masturbation: dazzling lights, expensive stage sets, dancers, wardrobe changes, loud, incessant booming of basic beats. It's like Vegas on the road. And I hate Las Vegas, btw.
I totally agree! I'm 68yrs old. I've seen, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Journey, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie and many more in my years. Never have their been any auto tune or lip syncing. Yes, we too used "real lighters" as opposed to phone flashlights.
As someone earlier said, those were a different kind of show. The singer may have climbed on a stack but he wasn't singing at that particular moment. Also some shows like Alice Cooper, are highly theatrical but the actions of the singer are timed and he isn't singing while moving a lot. Some movement is obviously okay but just keep in mind, the more action there is, the less singing there would be at that moment.

Back in the late 70s I saw Queen on their News of the World US tour. During the semi-accapella section of Bohemian Rhapsody the stage lights went off entirely, and they rolled tape. They didn't mime, they just disappeared entirely. I believe everyone in the crowd understood what was going on. Twenty or thirty seconds later and the lights went back on and they rocked the house. Looking back on it now it seems odd that they did that, but I guess at that time they were not confident they could pull that section off live. At least they didn't pretend they were actually singing, I'll give them credit for that.
If you watch the BoRap video, you can see that it would be near impossible to do that part during a live concert. Yes, they left the stage and came back to finish the song. No miming or pretending.
It was exactly yhe same at Slane Castle in '86...I borrowed someones' binoculars for a closer look and the only person on stage was an old guy with a Hoover.
I saw a documentary about them producing that song, that was their best vocal performances with the producer really squeezing on Roger and Freddy to eek the best out of them over many takes.
I'm a boomer that graduated from high school in the late 70's. Back then there was no autotune or other computer generated sounds. We didn't have computers or cellphones. Part of the wonder of music back then, is that when you were at a concert and hear live harmonies you knew, without dought, that it was authentic. Some of the best harmonizing bands from that era are; Three Dog Night, Beach Boys, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Momas and the Popas, Queen, Eagles, ending with Simon and Garfunkel. I could list many more. The problem with the talent now is that you really don't know how talented they are until they sing something unplugged. There is way too much computer aided sound tech out there now. I'll not be surprised if the next great vocalist is an AI singing through a virtual body. If you're GenZ or GenA you really need to listen to live concerts of the bands I listed above. NONE of it is artificial.
AI is already coming for them.. just watched an AI song of Ozzy Osbourne .. the title was 'I hate AI' the irony of it all was enough for me to give it a listen.. and it was not half bad. Just imagine what it will be like in 5 or 10 years.
Unfortunately record companies are going back and remastering and adding this crappy auto tune into things that never needed it. They’ve done it to the bee gees and they’ll do it to Karen carpenter next, if they haven’t already. Keep your vinyl for that authentic human emotion.
@helloheyo4ever I honestly don't think he's doing this for clicks. If you research a lot of singers nowadays, they are all doing pre recorded vocals. Cyndi Lauper still does live vocals but Dua Lipa is doing pre-recorded vocals. It's become the norm for most artists. The industry is pushing this not the artists. So I'm not saying it is their fault but still. It's a shame it's happening at all. But, Taylor fans can't take it if you say anything the least bit negative about her.
@ actually we can take it when it’s true but when it isn’t true we know it and it shows that those disparaging her are doing it to ride her famous coat tails - disparaging her gets him the clicks from all those haters that hate her for absolutely no reason and they love this kind of bullshhh because it feeds their fire to hate her because of her success - those of us that have followed Taylor from the beginning knows her integrity and talent and showmanship and we’re very confident if Taylor says she’s singing 🎵 she’s singing ;)
@@helloheyo4ever yes, I'm well aware of the parasocial relationship that Swifties have with their favorite artist. Even though it's not real. But also, I'm not trying to say Swift is a bad person per se. I honestly believe it's the industry and perhaps some of her own perfectionism that has her doing this. After all, since she's the big singing sensation at the moment, I'm sure she doesn't want to disappoint her audience. And yes, sure, she has made some mild mistakes during performances and yes, she is able to laugh them off with a crowd. But when it come to an entire 3 hour show, it would be very difficult to replicate that kind of singing every single night. But, whatever you want to believe. I believe in free speech so each to their own. But I really don't feel like he is trying to belittle your favorite artist.😖
This is done for a lot (if not most) of live performances. The original audio's cleaned up (a good thing) and then pitch corrected (imho a bad thing). Fil reacted to among others Got Talent live vids (the TV versions) and they all had heavy editing. According to Simon Cowell, that's TV. No grain of integrity left. In my opinion.
@@0oDaan12o0I agree. Additionally it's very disappointing the artist is happy with pitch correction of their voice. Some lack of respect for the audience as well as inherent insecurity.
@@0oDaan12o0 exactly. Not saying it makes it OK, but I don't recall the last time I watched a "live" production for sale that wasn't completely touched up in post (pitch corrected, parts resung, etc). It's sad, but it's the standard by which artists feel the need to live up. Playing devil's advocate, I truly believe we'd see JUST as much (possibly worse) blowback if the entire Eras Tour was 100% live, and she missed notes, dropped keys ("it doesn't sound like the radio!"), or skipped songs altogether because she's human sometimes you wake up and your voice says "not today!". (II've been a career singer and guitar player for coming up on 30 years. One thing I have learned is with singing, I just have to do my best to care for my voice and work around my human limitations). So it seems to be they are just trying to pander to the majority. The majority public is trained to expect the live concert to sound like what they heard on the radio. That is all but impossible without the heavy backing tracks and assisted live singing in a show that runs 3 1/2 hours, 3 nights in a row. I honestly enjoyed the show, regardless of tha fact I KNEW it wasn't all 100% live vocals.
This was known years ago. A youtuber had recordings of the isolated vocal feeds for several pop stars in concert, including Taylor Swift, but also Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, others. None of them were singing live but just choking out some breathless sounds so their lips would sync with the recordings. Ms. Grande actually carried the tune, but the others were just speaking.
I shot a few of her shows, shes definitely singing but I believe this is also true, in a failsafe should something go wrong. The amount of shows, the amount of hours, and lack of rest due to media commitments is the strain on the modern popstar. Theres definitely people exploiting it though and barely doing anything, but AG to my knowledge is doing a lot of live Vox
I've heard of fans who went to the shows, paying a lot of money of course, and were disappointed because it was obvious to them that she was lipsyncing.
I’m not a fan, but appreciate the role of “ childless cat lady “ she has taken recently, to back Kamala Harris in the current federal US election . I really hope you were not aware of the impact her fame is having on the US saving itself from something less than democracy when you chose to do this video at this time. If unaware of the fight for democracy, perhaps someone asked you to analyse Swift at this time.
It should b obvious, she has way too weak voice to specially sing a whole show live. She seems like a very nice lady but I don't understand the crazy and obsessed fans this fairly mediocre singer has.
As the author of a series of software synthesis apps that utilized wavetable synthesis (i.e. synthesis based on digital sampling of real instruments and vocals) I've done quite a lot of detailed analysis of recorded audio. One thing Fil doesn't mention here is that you can often have two digital recordings of something that to the human ear sound absolutely identical, but when viewed at the level of individual samples you can see very pronounced and obvious differences (anybody can see this phenomenon for themselves by comparing an uncompressed digital recording of literally anything with the same recording compressed via a "lossless" algorithm and then uncompressed back to raw digital - no human ear can detect a difference but the samples look visible different). The fact that these recordings of "different" Taylor Swift live performances look absolutely identical (even with just pitch analysis software, not views of the raw samples themselves) is DAMNING. There is a 0% chance this is anything but lip-syncing.
@@Blahblahblahblahblahblahblah1 Incorrect. The act was pre-recorded due to poor weather conditions, but the performance was still recorded with live vocals.
It's not even about "good," though. No human is that precise and intractable in their performance. I've seen analyses of some amazing performances where they nailed the timing and pitch to an unbelievable degree, and the waveforms still looked nothing alike. There is no natural way these should line up the same. One is a lightning-strikes-twice kind of situation. Four is more like pick-this-specific-atom-at-random-out-of-all-the-observable-universe kind of odds.
@@JustinWillhoit It's a semi-live movie, basically. Combination theater/concert presentation. Before anyone makes any comment about what I have to say below, I watched the whole video and listened to everything the creator had to say. I was recommended this video because I’m a Swiftie, interested in the technical side of things and the “biz”. There’s no denying that some parts of this show are lip synched, it’s obvious. I’ve watched many clips of many shows and I knew something was going on shortly into the tour because she is on pitch 99% of the time. However, I don’t think she’s lip syncing the whole way through. There’s been instances she’s spoken mid line and the vocal stops. My guess is that amongst the lip synched moments when she’s actually singing it’s still heavily pitch corrected in real time- though there are still (less) moments that she’s slightly off pitch. If you compare it to other tours, it’s still very different. I also don’t think Style was probably the best example to use for this either. I’d be more interested to see an analysis of perhaps surprise acoustic songs she’s played a few times. Also… the show is 3.5 hours long so I would be more surprised if she was singing 3-4 shows in succession fully live for that amount of time. There can be plenty of discussion around why people pay for this and truthfully, I think non-fans will not understand unless they themselves are a fan of something else in the same way. It’s not solely about the live music, it’s about the energy and culture of being there. It’s about lyrics that we resonate with and many many people, particularly young women, grew up with. Her music was there to support us when we needed it. Nostalgia is also a big selling point for millennials and gen z, and The Eras Tour is all about that. As I mentioned, I’m a huge fan of Taylor and am always open to have a critical discussion about her. What I think bothers me about the type of discourse this can create (this is nothing against the creator, I enjoyed the video and felt that it was constructive) is that it can make some people feel like they need to be insufferable and pretentious on both sides of the argument. Let people enjoy what they want to enjoy. The resale, merch and capitalism of it all is a different discussion, but the base discussion of why even see her at all is relatively easy to understand.
for reallllllll. 1989 is pop perfection, and she’s mastered it. especially when note changes like “take her home” are out there. some parts may be synced, but I think she’s singing for 90% of the show.
@@TheBrown03 Yeah! I’ve noticed a lot of the high energy moments and choruses are when the potentially synched moments happen, however I don’t think it’s all lip synched as potentially insinuated. I’d definitely be interested to see other parts of the show dissected!
Iv mention Aurora before. And when she gets really energetic, you can hear she run out of breath. Like the KEXP concert. I love that. She doesn't hide. This is what you get she says.

Her bi-Polar crowd also doesn't seem to care that Taylor Swift suffers from mental health issues seeing that she is a woman in her early 30's who behaves like a 14 years old girl.........................real mentally fucked up stuff!!!
We don't care, actually. Went to Denver & Seattle. Headed to Toronto and Vancouver next. Love Taylor shows. The vibe is amazing. Pure joy. We get to sing and dance with each other. Wear sparkles and twirl and trade bracelets. Laugh and cry and scream. So cathartic. I'm 65.
I watched about 45 minutes of the tour video and I felt really saddened by it because Mr Swift does actually have a bit of talent. If she had been recording in the '70s, she would probably not have been big, but she would have probably met a few people to guide her, maybe spend some time with Joni Mitchell. She might have become a real artist. What she is now, is a Fully Corporatised Disney Property. And her fans don't even know the difference because they have never heard the alternative.
Swifter fans keep saying, "HOW CAN U EXPECT HER TO SING 3 1/2 HOURS EVERY NIGHT"? OF COURSE SHE WILL NEED TO MIME, Singing for 3 1/2 hours every night? YOU MEAN, LIKE ZEPPELIN? QUEEN? GREATFUL DEAD? For me, I will never attend another "live concert." I showed this to my wife, who is a huge Taylor Swift fan, and she said that it wasn't a big deal. She said that a record producer she had watched had said everybody did it. I put it down to a sign of the times. Bring back the '70s.
@@therrdon1841 i applaud your wife’s dismissal of your gotcha moment! Taylor might use auto correct but not continuously throughout from song to song. I’m 65yrs old. Don’t bring back the 70’s. That music still belongs on my playlist. However, I prefer to follow our new songwriters, Taylor included
Years ago, I went to see Sinead O’Connor back in about 1991. She performed two songs and left the stage and they came out to say she had problems with her throat and the show was over. I almost would rather they just played the tract so you can at least see the show you paid to see.
I almost didn’t click, because, 1) It’s obvious, and 2) I dig rock, not pop. I don’t think I’m going to watch this, unless I get *really* bored, and need to sleep.
I would be more surprised if she didn't, I have always found her voice fairly weak and not that special, it would probably be very difficult for her to sing everything live. I think she should sing live though (at least some songs if she can't manage everything).
Not even, she has sold her soul for where’ she’s at! People are just dumb sheep that are told what to like and not and swifts handlers tell The masses to like her and they shove her down people throats 24/7 through media, commercials, radio, movies…. That’s why shes famous not Because she’s talented or a good promoter.
She certainly is. She makes sure she is always in the media. She's a master of the game. I know one of her songs. Yet I know plenty about her love life
No, because plenty of what Taylor was singing was live. The surprise songs are 100% live. She had a track for the set list, which is pretty normal in a production this massive.
great video! i think ur point could have been made even stronger if u had analyzed two live performances of the same song from a different artist as a reference point, just to show what those differences and similarities SHOULD look like in the pitch monitoring software.
I'm an old guy, I don't really listen much to anything after the 90's. I listen to original versions (usually non remastered)of rock, pop, opera, classical, 30's-60's jazz, accapella, early country, bluegrass, lounge music, some soundtracks, showtunes etc. There's so much of this stuff, I can listen to absolutely non-auto tuned, non sampled music till I expire, which is fine by me.
@@redstrat1234 I’m an old gal who is also a swifty. I’m also old enough to recognize and appreciate all the same music that you do. I think with technology, we see more of the auto correct. Genuine question, is it possible these examples are the backing track and there are sections of the song she is singing live? So it’s semi live? That’s what I thought was happening, but I don’t know much about it so I’d love to hear what others think.
This video is just confirming the obvious. I don’t think it’s very brave to do that. Exposing Don Henley was a much better example of something that could be called brave because Don Henley is a sue-happy douche bag.

Taylor swift without digital voice altering is naturally quite pitchy. Generally having wide range on a specific note. And that can be trained in a bit but generally you will still have a decent amount of fluctuations between different performances. Then the timing should never be spot on. Because if she was a fantastic performer she would have a dialogue with the spectators and exchanges both verbal and nonverbal and it’s these nonverbal ones. Like you see the crowd is into it and you run through the last verse and chorus an extra time. Or the chorus one extra time. Or hold a note longer in one performance than in a past one. Maybe the tempo goes up a bit. Or maybe it slows down. The point being is that you honestly can’t have it be identical time and time again. I don’t like going to a concert and then finding out that the live version isn’t any different than the recorded one.
It's clear to me she's worked on her voice over the years,, and in the intimate close quarters songs she did was anything but pitchy. She had great control, breath support, and nuance. All the calling cards of someone who's put in the work with vocal coaches. So I have to disagree, just based on what I saw last night. Maybe she has pitchy nights. She's human. But last night wasnt' one of them. (I am of course not talking about the pieces with backing tracks, which as a musician I was fully aware of. Those were clearly songs they put production and choreography over vocal performance. The small scale stuff was all live and executed quite well in my humble opinion. )
but she sometimes changes the lyrics and sometimes do a high not sometimes dont... I think some chorus she might mimic and not the intire show because at mine concerto she had a little problem with her voice its was quiet pitchy but i liked that
There are some nights her voice will be a little scratchy on a couple of songs And there's quite a few times she literally stops singing To wipe her nose because she has a cold
I've watched 3 or 4 live phone recordings of ' Who's afraid of Little Old Me' and the vocal delivery is always note perfect and her mouthing is always a 100% believable. Not being at all tech savvy, I imagined she sang along to a very smart backing track that allowed her to chime in and out of the performance whenever it suited her. Surprised she's getting away with 100% mime, although I imagine this might not apply to her acoustic and piano performances.
There is no evidence that the Eras Tour is 100% mime. You cannot take a small part of one song where she is miming and from that conclude the whole performance - or even the rest of the song - is mimed. It is dishonest to even imply that. I do not think Fil intended that but that is how it is perceived. Fil should at least clarify, better, check out more of the tour.
I have watched a ton of live performances and heard pitch issues and random squeal. Once she started singing and forgot to hold up the mic, starting the song late and there was no recording. I have heard too many mistakes to know it is not 100%. There is likely assistance, not just back up singers. But she is singing.
@@andrewjenkinson7052 why? why would the techs go thru all that work for just that part? it's fake- believe it. i've had to do the synching vocal thing myself- it's embarrassing.
@@davidmurphy5647 it is not "just that part". They have done it for parts of most, if not all, the songs. WHY? Because Taylor Swift is a PERFECTIONIST and can AFFORD to get it right. WHY would they go to the trouble of faking all of it and building in the ability to randomly cut the sound when the mike is not at her mouth or allow her to address problems of fans mid song then resume singing EXACTLY in sinc? Please explain how that is technically possible!
@@andrewjenkinson7052 There is a momentary touch switch on the mic. The switch is commonlyused to turn on or off effects pedals like the TC Helicon Voicetone X1 Megaphone Distortion pedal to mimic a megaphone while singing.
Are you serious... In the beginning of the video I was literally saying to myself "It'll be cringe if he analyses the song Style". As a vocalist I 100% noticed this song and some other songs from the same 1989 era she didn't fully sing live (those are the "dancy" songs with quite hard vocals). Especially this one. But it's so incorrect to say that the entire tour is not worth it because of some songs being like that in the tour that has 40+ SONGS and lasts 3/5 hours. If you analysed at least 1 song from each Era, you'd understand that you're wrong. Unfortunately, in this case you didn't conduct a research - you knew the results beforehand and just picked the song to prove your point.
The disappointing thing about someone like Taylor Swift miming on her live shows is not that she shouldn't be able to get away with it, because a lot of performers do, but that it goes against everything that she purportedly stands for: chiefly, artistic integrity and emotional sincerity. That's what she has built her whole career on. If she's unable to be a real live performer while singing songs about her true feelings and thoughts, then she really is just a con artist. I don't like con artists, and I think people who allow themselves to be scammed by con artists are feeding and enabling the scam.
Nah, the show is just a lot more than just the vocal performance. She is probably still singing, but they are playing the perfected audio through the sound system. So she is not miming, but she is using a track. A lot of artists do it, but Taylor is very famous so this video will get clicks. Other artists also do this. I won’t out them here, but also they could play some parts from the recording and some parts live. That’s also done
She’s not my taste but I thought she was an artist writing and singing her songs so hey ho. But now I find out there is a team of songwriters and producers, and now the whole miming and auto tuning. She’s the face of a very contrived successful product.
Freddie Mercury managed to sound like same or better live than on studio recordings. He ran all over the stage for 2-3 hours, unless he was playing the piano. No ear piece, no auto tune just raw talent. And he had one of the best voices in music. Don't believe me? Scientists have done studies on his voice and vibrato. Hebhad a 4 octave could hit high notes that the human ears can not hear.
Video anyway Got no proof of where the audios came from claims are from certain nights but does does that mean he's Got 4 different Movie premiere With the other 3 doesn't really say where they're from For all we know we know For all we know we know he's 4 times 4 Cause He said himself they shouldn't match because of the crowd noise So why do they match that means he's playing the same audio That he himself has copied 4 times To use for this video he's faking the whole damn video in order to get engagement and we're all obliging him
It’s a 3.5 hour show, of course she’s not singing the whole time, and especially not the songs she’s performed hundreds of times at this point. But I’d say a majority of the show is sung live. Literally every single concert has been recorded and broadcast on live stream, and you can hear her. There have been several times where she acknowledges something going on in the crowd mid lyric and her audio doesn’t continue to play. At a recent performance her in-ears malfunctioned and you see how much it messed with the performance, which would not be the case if she was just mouthing along. I think it would be a lot more telling if you did this analysis with anything off of folklore, evermore, midnights, TTPD, or lover (besides Cruel Summer). Also ticket prices are only what they are if you’re buying resale. The FV tickets are in line with industry standard at this time in this market. Seeing big artists for $2 is a thing of the past ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
She's charging people money to see her sing, and she's not singing. And, because she's not singing she can pack in as many tour dates as possible, and rake in even more money. If she was up front about it, that'd be one thing, but she's not because she knows nowhere near that many people would pay anywhere near what she's charging to watch someone lip sync for 4 hours.
@kenward1310 but she is not lipsyncing for 4 hours. Yes, she is lipsyncing the song Style, obviously. But that does not prove that everything is lipsynced, especially when you can sometimes hear her cough or speak to the audience.
@@kenward1310 Stop lying to defend your misogynistic prejudices. You are not Donald Trump. She doesn't sing live for over 3.5 hours straight, but she sings most parts of her show live. You can hear that clearly, but for that you would have to hear more than this small analyzed excerpt. But of course you don't want to hear that because it doesn't correspond to your world view.
I think by now it is easier to list the artists that do not lip sync or mime their instruments. I used to go to a lot of concerts (around 50 per year) back in the day, but it has entirely lost its attraction. No desire to pay a lot of money to end up in a crowd that does not care and is there only to be able to put on social media they were there. All this while looking at miming artists, regardless whether it is the singing or the instruments. The latter I experienced the most blatant example with Skillet where I went as my young son is a fan. Bass, guitar....mime galore. Just frustrating......
except that all of the medium sized bands are ignored. Bands like Blink 182 are ignored. Anything newer in rock is ignored. So no, it isn't easier to list the ones who don't.

comment at 2:00 she sounds like a robot right away so miming or not she is autotuned, so not only is she miming she is miming to pitch-corrected vocals. LMFAO
The answer is simple really, Taylor Swift can’t play a instrument or sing outside of a grade 2-3 level, she is not a singer, not a artist not even a entertainer, she is a business and the product is Taylor Swift. She will rightfully never be remembered as a musician because her singing and lackluster writing is a prob the worst we’ve heard in two decades and her cult following can only take focus away from that for so long.
Everything you've said is incorrect. She IS a singer...not the best for sure but certainly not the worst. She plays guitar and piano well enough to write songs but doesn't claim to be an instrumentalist. Neither did Elvis. She is definitely an artist and most definitely an amazing entertainer. No one who has seen her show can claim they weren't thoroughly entertained. Saying she is nothing more than a business creation is a pathetic excuse to try and take away her accomplishments. If it was as easy as that then why is she the only one at this level? Why aren't they doing it with everyone? Because it's not true. And even if it was, well, she makes all her own business decisions too, so you can't take away credit from her that way either. 😂
Potentially devastating I would think. Fraud, Deception, Trades Description ……goods not fit for purpose. I’m sure there must be enough there for a lawyer to get his teeth into. Just needs someone with the confidence and the money to take these cheats on.
I always thought her almost total dedication to singing the songs like recorded without any riffs, pauses or embellishments suggested pre-recorded vocals or advanced live pitch correction.
I know she does change it up tho because my swiftie coworkers watch the tour on Tik Tok and they notice when she goes hard on the high notes and when she plays it safer
It's not hate or jealousy, it's just fact that vocal live performances can't be replicated pitch-wise to the millisecond like this unless it's the exact same recorded audio. I saw Kate Bush live in 1979 - there were two songs with a lot of dancing involved. An announcement was made before each song that due to the complexity of the choreography Kate would be miming. Integrity and honesty is long gone in the music biz.

If you are a singer and you can't dance and sing simultaneously, then don't dance. What the hell
Been an Audio Engineer AND musician for almost 30-years .Definitely the exact same audio. NEVER happens like that in a LIVE performance!

The most astonishing aspect of this video is to learn that there are actually people who don't think she is miming her performances.

I'm almost 60 and for most of my life I played drums and sang bands. I knew in the first three seconds of her singing that it had to come out of a studio.
Denial is a hell of a thing.
You see it everywhere, honestly.
Delusional as f, or rather have a very bad set of ears
A grown man that is a fan of Swift....get a grip putz.

I saw that live too. Great concert, brian soloing with the lazer lights beaming on him. I was amazed.
It's impossible to do because every part was sang by Freddie on the LP. He harmonized with himself. That's why it's tape I bet.
I saw a documentary about them producing that song, that was their best vocal performances with the producer really squeezing on Roger and Freddy to eek the best out of them over many takes.
This is the first video I have seen of yours. Great video, I must say. I learned quite a bit. You definitely have a new sub!
I think ABBA should be added, their concerts were live vocals. Too bad they weren’t bigger in the US at that time.
AI is already coming for them.. just watched an AI song of Ozzy Osbourne .. the title was 'I hate AI'
the irony of it all was enough for me to give it a listen.. and it was not half bad. Just imagine what it will be like in 5 or 10 years.
I remember coming home from concerts thinking, "that wasn't as good as the album"! This is why!
Unfortunately record companies are going back and remastering and adding this crappy auto tune into things that never needed it. They’ve done it to the bee gees and they’ll do it to Karen carpenter next, if they haven’t already. Keep your vinyl for that authentic human emotion.
I said to a friend the other day that next will be AI singing to us and the peeps will lap it up like they do autotune.
I feel that they should have to put up a disclaimer advising that they are lip syncing and why. You are awesome Phil.
I subscribed for one reason alone: the opening disclaimer. What balls this man has. Good for you sir; good for you.
@@mdnorman0001 it doesn’t take balls to make something up for clicks bait
@helloheyo4ever Clearly you can't take it. That was a lot of denial
Thank you for doing these!
The important secondary issue is they chose to pitch correct the studio 'live' performance.
That's an additional disgrace.
That. Plus, she also uses AI to write her lyrics.
They have to since she can't sing 😂
Can tell if Katy Perry is actually live or not - she’s off-key a lot when live!
Ariana doesn’t really deserve to be grouped with those two. She can actually sing and has serious range.

It's sort've a cult
🤔😆😂😅
This is why I love Gaga. She is often out of breath and sometimes miss notes, but at least you know you get a live performance.
Elton John also.
She lipped her performance at the Olympics opening ceremony tho.
@@Blahblahblahblahblahblahblah1 Incorrect. The act was pre-recorded due to poor weather conditions, but the performance was still recorded with live vocals.

Well said.
@@TheBrown03 Yeah! I’ve noticed a lot of the high energy moments and choruses are when the potentially synched moments happen, however I don’t think it’s all lip synched as potentially insinuated. I’d definitely be interested to see other parts of the show dissected!

Exactly! Thank you!

In her Shake it Off video she pretends to fall over, as if she's just like one of her maladroit tween fans. Cynical.
Ahh, my favorite singer! Abundance of raw, real talent ⭐️

Love this comment!
Video anyway Got no proof of where the audios came from claims are from certain nights but does does that mean he's Got 4 different Movie premiere With the other 3 doesn't really say where they're from For all we know we know For all we know we know he's 4 times 4 Cause He said himself they shouldn't match because of the crowd noise So why do they match that means he's playing the same audio That he himself has copied 4 times To use for this video he's faking the whole damn video in order to get engagement and we're all obliging him
@@stevenstewart782 Are you Taylor Swift's lawyer?
right? Fil is NOT suicidal.
@@stevenstewart782 Dream on simp.
THANK YOU
She's charging people money to see her sing, and she's not singing.

Not surprised at allllll. Thanks for the confirmation 😆👌🏼
Excellent analysis! Your video is being talked about on local radio in Atlanta. Although I've been a subscriber for awhile, hearing it mentioned twice on different stations drove me to drop in.
Fantastic sound analysis. Sending lots of love and warm greetings from the creeks and woodland of Missouri.
I saw Chris Stapleton a couple of months ago. That guy was singing, great artist.
one of the Wings of Pegasus video talk of Floor Jansen the lead singer of the band Nightwish. One of the best female singer in the world right now and like the title of Wings of Pegasus of is video of analysing Floor Jansen . Floor raised the bar . No Pitch correction, no nothing, just pure talent
I saw him a few weeks ago, amazing singer, artist and what a powerful voice(he packs a lot of songs in as well!)
@DavidGraybeard lol, well if I was you I just wouldn't listen to it.
I'm old. Old enough to remember *The Before-Times*
Before Lip-Syncing a "Live Show"
Before *Ticketmaster*
How sad indeed
so sad.
Effin' rights man 💪 I'm remember standing in line in winter here in Canada (I'm in the cold part, lol) to buy a paper ticket (that you dare not loose) from a girl at a window booth . You'd look at that ticket everyday, counting the days to the show. Miss the 70s and 80s, freakin greatest music !!!
Yes I can remember simply turning up at the door to buy a reasonably priced ticket to see completely live music.
I used to go to a concert once a week on my meager teenage wages and the bands were so close you could see them without video feed.
comment at 2:00 she sounds like a robot right away so miming or not she is autotuned, so not only is she miming she is miming to pitch-corrected vocals.
@@PhysicalMediaPreventsWea-bx1zm 🥱 Cope.
I wonder what the legal position is if you've paid for tickets to a "live" performance and just get a mime show.
Potentially devastating I would think. Fraud, Deception, Trades Description ……goods not fit for purpose. I’m sure there must be enough there for a lawyer to get his teeth into. Just needs someone with the confidence and the money to take these cheats on.
A mime show is considered a live show..,. Not a live performance just a live show
I always thought her almost total dedication to singing the songs like recorded without any riffs, pauses or embellishments suggested pre-recorded vocals or advanced live pitch correction.
She has always done different and new arrangements for songs when she's touring though.
Clearly you haven't been paying attention to the Eras tour... She does exactly add riffs, pauses and adds embellishments.
@@Mina-12128Shes a faker!
I know she does change it up tho because my swiftie coworkers watch the tour on Tik Tok and they notice when she goes hard on the high notes and when she plays it safer
@ They pre-record live vocals during rehearsals
