    The only thing I can think of for Chicago's thought process is that they're gambling on Bedard and want to match their rebuild timeline to having the right pieces when he's in his prime. Dach and Debrinkat are 1 or 2 years ahead of that schedule and reduce their chances of getting in a good spot for that draft lottery

    • @jasonprice9823

      Dach was a shell of his firmer self after that gruesome wrist injury. I also think the old Hawks regime did him no favors by rushing him to hype up prospects which they were notorious for doing. Boqvist is that list too. They threw him to the wolves.

    Leafs trade first round pick to fix one of several bad Dubas contracts: "Ah its a good deal, doesn't cost a lot"
    Red Wings trade a third round pick for the exclusive negotiation rights of a solid (at for long stretches last season, clear #1 option) goaltender: "Wow that's a lot to give up"
    Makes sense.

    • @EamonnJCF
      @EamonnJCF 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Husso was a UFA, that's why it's considered a lot to give up. They could have just tried to get him in UFA for free.

    • @meleekunis2196
      @meleekunis2196 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EamonnJCF Hard disagree. If they waited until he was officially UFA (which would be on July 13th) Detroit would be competing against other teams' offers. By trading for his rights the Red Wings have exclusive negotiation rights until then.
      Personally, I think trading a 3rd for nearly a week of exclusive negotiation rights is worth it, but if someone thinks otherwise I could see the argument for it.
      I just think it's crazy to say that Detroit overpaid while at the same saying that that the Leafs trading out of the first round to get rid of a nearly $4million bad contract (a bad contract that Dubas himself signed) is not overpaying because "late first round picks aren't worth much".

    • @brianeleighton
      @brianeleighton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@meleekunis2196 It is about cap space. The Leafs are hard against the cap, keeping Mrazek would've probably cost the Leafs two good young players going into RFA. By trading that bad contract, they freed up all that cap space. It isn't a great trade, but the League isn't a charity. Teams aren't in a hurry to save another team from a bad contract for basically nothing. This is why a late first rounder to get rid of the two remaining years on the deal isn't too crazy. At the same time, trading for an exclusive negotiation window for a UFA is REALLY a gamble. It would be a different story if he was a RFA, where you have the right to match. If he had been determined to test the open market Detroit would have traded a 3rd to Carolina for absolutely nothing. That is why when the trade was made by Detroit it didn't make a ton of sense.

    • @meleekunis2196
      @meleekunis2196 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not arguing that the Mrazek trade was bad; I'm actually in favor of it. The Mrazek contract was a bad deal, and they had to pay a fairly steep price to get rid of it in order to get back some cap space (late or not, a first is a first).
      I also, personally, feel the Detroit spending a 3rd round pick to gamble on getting on getting a deal done with a pretty solid goaltender is also a good trade. I get that Husso is a UFA and not an RFA (i.e. more risk), but for me a 3rd round pick is reasonable to take that type of risk.
      My issue was with them pretending like the Detroit deal was worse then the Leafs deal. The Leafs had to move a first; Detroit only moved a third. And Detroit made the trade to aquire someone, while the Leafs made a trade to get rid of someone because Dubas made a bad deal.
      I could understand people saying both trades were good, or even both trades are bad, but saying that the Leafs won their trade while at the same time that Detroit overpaid is outrages.

    • @brianeleighton
      @brianeleighton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@meleekunis2196 As they pointed out, the trade wasn't just a 1st and Mrazek to dump salary. That would be a bad trade. The Leafs just moved down 13 draft spots and got rid of Mrazek. Statistically, the pick the Leafs traded and the pick they got are essentially the same in terms of value. When values of picks are factored in, they essentially traded Mrazek and a 7th for almost $4 million in cap relief with a cap strapped team. That is objectively a very low price to pay in order to get your team out of cap hell. The Detroit trade ended up being good because they were able to get a deal done. However, that trade could've gone VERY badly. Imagine a universe where Detroit makes the trade and is unable to sign him. Then the second the UFA period opens, he signs a free agent deal back with Carolina. In that situation, Carolina gets both the player and the pick. That was a very real possibility. At the time, I also felt Detroit overpaid a little. A week of exclusivity for negotiations on a UFA is worth a 4th, tops. We can't use the benefit of hindsight in evaluating if a trade was considered fair at the time of the trade. For instance, the Subban/Weber trade. At the time of the trade, literally the whole hockey world was convinced Nashville fleeced the Canadiens. With the benefit of hindsight, that opinion has flipped.

    I think the Dach trade makes a lot of sense. Debrincat not so much.
    Dach might become a decent 2nd liner but so could Nazar. Ultimately it came down to what kind of player the team wanted. Do you want potentially a creative, speedy center or a bigger and more defensive center?
    Ultimately the Hawks wanted to get faster and have a higher compete level. Best of Luck to Dach!

      The Debrincat trade was essentially done because they had no other options to get into the top ten. They're now a tank/rebuild team and that's hard to do with 1st round picks. Yes, he's absolutely a top talent but Hawks writer Scott Powers had a source tell him to expect about what Wild got for Fiala. Well Alex is better and the Hawks got more so this is a perfect example of the public not knowing what the value of players are.

    As a Hawks fan - need to provide some context. Bowman spent a boatload of capital last year (including the Hawks 2022 1st which ended up being 6th overall) to get Seth Jones and try to make the team competitive. That failed miserably, and the the new GM decided that whatever else he had to do something drastic to jumpstart the rebuild. My thought is that the Hawks know they're going to be terrible which would impact their ability to resign Debrincat, so they decided to move him, and then got taken to the cleaners in that deal. Dach had really struggled after breaking his wrist at the WJC, so IMO they were just trying to reset the clock. One issue with the podcast - can you provide an example of moving up 13 spots from the 2nd into the first only costing a 7th round DP? I know that was the guys post on Twitter, but IMO there is NO way that can be accurate. Would love any sort of example to back that up.

    Jesse's comment "Toews and Kane have won 0 cups since their 10.5 mil/year contracts" angered me. Firstly, they won 3 cups so they have earned that money. Secondly, why Oilers pay McDavid 12.5 mil/year he hasn't won any cups as well. Looking at the 2022 salary hit list top 10 have 3 cup winners (Kane, Toews, Doughty) so does that mean the rest are bad? So teams need/should pay players once a year, if they won a cup they get paid, and if not then they don't get paid?
    Also, Chicago could sign Cat back in free agency and Sens would have given up all those draft picks for a few years of Cat. Sure if they win a cup during that time then they might say it was worth it. It was just like the Panarin-Saad trade. Chicago knew that they couldn't afford Panarin when his deal was up, so they traded him to Columbus to get back Saad, and then Panarin walked away to NYR leaving Columbus with nothing.

I mean all teams sign bad contracts but what got me was that everyone forgets that during the whole, lost to a zamboni driver thing the reason a zamboni driver was in was because Mrazek went way out of his net in a needless play that got him injured when there was nobody on the bench. Every team signs bad contracts and as far as getting out of one goes Dubas did well. Mrazek is always going to be hurt because he does it to himself. He's injury prone.

    Great podcast guys. I have commented before and am happy to hear we are on the same page as far as Stan Bowman. Here in Chicago, he got away scot-free. No radio show will mention he was a terrible GM. I tossed my phone at the wall when he drafted Lucas Reichl over Dawson Mercer and again when he traded for Seth Jones and signed him to that insane contract. To get some new viewpoints on the organization I wish the Blackhawks would have hired Mathieu Darche as the GM. However, Davidson got the job because the higher-ups ( Rocky and Danny Wirtz ) wanted to save money and wanted a familiar face. But they will get what they deserve now. My question to you and the comment section is: Which team makes the playoffs first and which team makes the playoff last? Please put are year you think they will make the playoffs. Arizona, Chicago, Seattle.

    The Dach Thornton comparison is a bit silly given how much younger the NHL has gotten since 1997. Thornton had 60 points in his third season to Dach's 26. Also this show has gotten so catty it's amazing how much time you guys spend calling like a third of the people in the league morons.

    • @stinkyfish97
      @stinkyfish97 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dach cant get out of the way of hits, his awareness is low.
      He skates good for a big man, and can dangle a little bit.
      He learned to play defense and back check so those are his strengths.
      Skating, defense, and backchecking.
      That is not what he was drafted for.
      Dach is more like Artem Anisimov imo. Big bodied C who cannot win a faceoff and cant avoid hits. At least that was Anisimov early in his career and 1st year with the Hawks.
      Then Anisimov got better at the dot and defense came a long.
      I dunno what to make of Dach other than he needs a change in scenery. We did a poor job developing him.

    It’s tough being a ‘Hawks fan at the moment, but following them closely, I get what they’re doing. Kyle Davidson has said that the only guys that are untouchables are the ones with no-trade clauses. These guys have earned their statuses, he has stated numerous times. The most crushing thing to me, personally, is the fact that they’ve mistreated Kyle Beach so badly. Hockey’s just a game, it’s NEVER more important than any human being. In my mind, there’s a huge asterisk next to their 2010 cup win, and I’d be happy if they flush out all of the remnants of the team that Stan Bowman built and/or managed. Not because I think he did that part of his job poorly, or that I don’t like the players. I’ve been devestated every time they’ve lost players I like, but to be honest with you, I like the fact that they’re decimating Stan Bowman’s old team. As you said, there’s very few pieces of that team left, and though Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are players I love and adore, I think the management team is making a necessary and important statement by moving away from that extremely successful, yet more importantly, grim and dark time in the franchise’s history. I wanted to stop following the team when the news hit, but I’ve found out I can’t. To me the logo on the front of the jersey is much more important than the names on the back. Yes, I too feel they got kind of hosed regarding DeBrincat, but I actually like both the Dach and the Mrazek deals. If you sum up what the ‘Hawks lost that day and what they gained, considering their obvious wish of cleaning away Stan Bowman’s stuff, I think the value they got is pretty good. Yes, it won’t yield immediate success, but I’m old enough to know that it’s worth the wait, if this will make them great in five years time. Go ‘Hawks!

    As a Hawks fan since 1985 I don't understand any of this... All I can say is that I saw my home team have a fantastic decade be a consistent contender year in and year out and win 3 Cups in 5 years.... Look, Stan Bowman would have NEVER, NEVER made these trades - Dach & DeBrincat were untouchable under Bowman... Man, the Seth Jones trade was a mistake and these 2 trades are going to be a mistake.... I'm 42 and I'm SIGNIFICANTLY more qualified to GM the Blackhawks over Davidson - I mean I've been a hockey nut since before Davidson was born.... Unbelievable - YOU DONT TRADE DeBRINCAT, YOU DONT TRADE DACH.......... NO, Columbus got the 6th overall pick in this past draft from the Hawks - Columbus got Boqvist and the 6th overall pick in yesterdays draft for Seth Jones AT 8.5 million per none the less......
    But like I said - I saw the Hawks have a decade of success and it was only a matter of time before the Hawks had to rebuild - I just wish the Hawks would have managed their assets a little more wisely...smh

      They are clearly tanking for Bedard.
      Dach and Debrindcat interferes with that agenda
      I would expect a 42 year hockey fan veteran, one that self claims to be knowledgeable enough to be an NHL executive, to be able to clearly realize this, and that Dach and Debrindcat aren’t game changing players, they’re good complimentary players.
