Steve, I've been taking anti-depressant, anti-anxiety and anti-psychotic meds for more than 3 years now. It felt really good to hear you say all of that because that's what I feel too. It's like I was always expecting for the drugs to make me boring, bland and like a zombie. But, like you, it's the exact opposite, it gave me back my life. I just need to say that you and SDPN mean so much to me. I think the first comment I ever left on one of your videos was "god this guy makes me so happy". I've just always related to your intense emotions, and seeing you get excited about hockey made me feel awesome. But I know that there's so much negative hidden too. It's like living your emotions to 200% all the time : so when you're excited, happy or stressed out, it shows in such big fashion. But when're you sad and depressed, you also live it to the max, so it sucks. But thank you so much for being here and being someone I can look up to, with your bravery and your kindness. I wish I'll someday have the chance to talk to you or meet you :) Take care!

Just listened to this episode and I’m not usually one to comment, but I feel it’s important to say thank you Steve for sharing about going on antidepressants. It’s something I’ve been considering lately after going through a really hard time lately (like we all have), but after hearing this and the way you so perfectly describe missing yourself I feel really inspired to make the jump and commit to trying it out. Thank you for sharing Steve! I can relate to a lot of what you said. My wife gave birth to our son, Phoenix, during the pandemic. To add to the stress, my wife is a nurse and worked up until a month before delivering. She got Covid while pregnant and we were so frightened at the possibilities, because no one knew of the impacts at that point. I have been on meds for a few years now and I have to say that I would not be married to such a wonderful person and have such a wonderful child if it was not for my anxiety meds. I’m sure that you sharing will help so many people. I’m a Habs fan but I never miss your podcast because I truly respect you, Adam, and Jessie’s coverage of everything. Stay awesome bud. @@adam_wylde thanks for the reply!! Honestly reading that was kinda of surprising because all you ever say is how we suck. Never how we were the youngest team last year who played with a goalie who should never play a nhl game again (Gillies), how we have a very promising young core in Hischier, Hughes and Bratt. How we actually started to fix our defense problems with the Ty Smith trade and the Brandon Smith signing. Sure we didn't get Johnny Hockey but if we did, how can you say we would still suck and without Johnny Hockey we are a season away from the playoffs, love you Adam but its not making sense. Still love the podcast tho 👍

Dear Stevie, i am glad you're feeling much better than you did in the past. I hadn't felt actual happiness in literally years until i finally got the chemicals in my brain sorted out thanks to medication. I was miserable for so long, suicidal for years, anxiety was through the roof etc. It was just awful. Once i was on medication for a while i finally felt like myself again. I finally managed to see some light at the end of the tunnel, i actually felt genuine joy for the first time in years. Sometimes i think i'm better and stop taking my medication for months and end up deeply depressed again but once i get my head to realise i'm not in a good place again, i just start it back up and cycle them back into my life. And that is perfectly fine. People, don't be scared to start medication. You deserve to be alright. You deserve to not be miserable. You deserve to feel like yourself again. Please seek help if you are in a bad place, take it from someone who has been depressed and suffered from severe anxiety for many, many years.

Great ep, guys. Most people with traditional broadcasting backgrounds don't get the podcast format very well - they try to re-create radio - but you guys really deeply understand the more direct, personal slant in this format, a tradition that goes back to the very first podcasts. I mean this as high praise!
The only other thing I would add is that while you guys are doing a great job covering the abuse scandals, I think we (collectively) can easily go much deeper. Part of the creation of Hockey Canada in the first place was to standardize rules, operational practices... and disciplinary standards across Canadian hockey. Hmmm. In a way, covering up stuff like we're learning about now is baked into the whole point of Hockey Canada. This might seem overly cynical, but if you go back 30+ years, all of this kind of thing was systematically brushed aside as "disgruntled groupies". Hockey Canada must have been a part of that. I've always been a big city guy, but everyone heard stories about Big Man Hockey players in small town Canada. And even if 80% of all of that was purely consensual, that still leaves a ton of really gross behaviour by boys and young men who have been removed from their families very young and whose supervision is quite minimal.
In other words, Hockey Canada didn't just become gross recently. It's part of its DNA. I know it's tough for you guys to go there without specific evidence, but I think we have to find ways to talk about it. I'm about 15 yrs older than you guys, but people of my generation were already talking about issues of consent and the like in my teenage years, so it's NOT just a question of changing standards. "No Means No" was a slogan going back at least as far as the mid-80s.

    Steve Dangle, Secret Keeper Man.
Seriously though Steve, I appreciate you, as a figure in a fandom area that is rife with toxic masculinity, to say that you deal with mental health issues. Normalization, removing the toxic elements of masculinity from the equation and allowing men to feel comfortable saying "I need help", is the key forward to helping society at large. Also, I love the detail of you saying "yea the first one didn't work, so my doctor and I changed it" because that is SOOO common, that the first thing that's tried doesn't work. It's discouraging for a lot of people to not get immediate changes for the better when their life is already hard and they are near the edge.
    Big

So glad you figured out what helped you to find yourself, Steve! And thank so you very much for acknowledging the stigma about antidepressants. You're an awesome human being and I'm so glad you are feeling better. As I once heard, if one's brain doesn't make the proper chemicals, store-bought is fine! ❤️ You three had a lot of very accurate things to say about mental health in this video, and how folks online can be kinder, so thank you for that as well.
