Trouba’s contract is much worse than Goodrow’s because of the difference in the size of the deal.
A 3.5M a year player producing at a 1.5M per year level is not nearly as bad as an 8.5M a year player producing at a 2.5M a year level (which is what a 3rd pair defenseman like Trouba should make). Combine that with Goodrow’s contract being much easier to move makes this a no brainer.

As a Leafs fan, I agree with your choice of Captain Toronto. I like him as a player/person and he's a solid second line C now, but not worth is 11 mil at this point in his career and with the people who were on ELCs when he joined now commanding as high, if not higher contracts, the lack of cap space has been a struggle. I think if he resigns, it'd either be a couple years max at just about 5 mil, or if he wants to end his career here, add a few more years, but lower the avg per year.
An honourable mention to me is Ryan Reaves. I like him as a personality and an option to rough someone up if needed, but over a mil a season for three years (at the time) just didn't make sense. 6 points in 49 games and while I get he is paid to rough people up and punch people in the face, he's made costly mistakes which cost us games, especially in one of the games against Boston in the playoffs, he did a turnover in a key game which lead to a goal. To me, the term with the value didn't make sense.

    • @doaftheloaf
      @doaftheloaf 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

JT may wear a C, but he is not a leader. he has a complete lack of personality and doesn't inspire anyone to do anything. that, and his bloated contract, are two huge reasons the leafs have only won one round in his tenure.
that contract screwed the leafs for several reasons:
      1. you didn't need him. you had a competent 2C in kadri. the money could have gone to two other really good players. or three decent ones. and it drove kadri out and his trade value down to where you took kerfoot and barrie. now kadri's a cup winner, barrie was awful, and kerfoot was serviceable but paid double his worth.
      2. it fucked your cap. you knew AM, MM, and WN needed contracts soon after and they were going to get paid. by paying JT 11, you set the bar where there was no way auston was taking less, and marner's was going to have to be comparable. without JT, perhaps auston accepts a 5x10 and marner a 5x9. with him, you're paying 3.5 extra for these two, simply because of the precedent set.
      3. you immediately made him captain. i've already made the case against this.

He is a soft player for the NHL elite. Everyone on the Panthers are experiencing inflated numbers for the last few years. I never liked him when he was in FL. Barkov's linemats always get better numbers. Reinhart got 57 goals this year. He was a wash and bust in Buffalo. I was way more upset about Weegar in the trade then Huberdeau. Montour picked a good year to show up last year to cover up that loss. To drop that much, I actually feel bad for him. Its bad bad. Not just I told you so bad. Now I am pulling for him to get it back together. Also Calgary giving away their top guys in trades kind of screwed him too. Like I said he needs other guys to be doing the dirty work. Bobrovsky is absolutely is the worst contract on that team. Have people already forgotten just how mediocre he played with Florida after being signed? He was an absolute joke. Bob was losing the crease to Spencer Knight who isn't even in the league currently and he DID lose the crease to Alex Lyon, a career 3rd string goalie. It wasn't until the second round of the playoffs LAST YEAR that he started to be worth it, and it's insane that people are already forgetting/ignoring that. This is the first full season he's lived up to his contract and he arrived in Florida in 2019. It's because of that bad contract he wasn't shipped out already since no one would've taken it unless they were desperate at the time. Idk how the panthers casted necromancy on his career to suddenly make him great again but good for them. Like, a top 6 contract for a bottom sixer who reached 30 points? As soon as that contract was announced, I laughed. Ryan McDonagh is not bad. He is really good. I know it is one year, but the worst contract for the Lightning is Tanner Jeanot. 5M for a bottom sixer who had less than 20 points this season? Not a good look. And for the Leafs, it is Ryan Reaves. It is good to have him on the team, but 1M for 3 years? A bit of an overpayment (not as much as Goodrow, Engvall, Brandon Tanev, but still).

I heavily disagree on the isles pick. Don’t get me wrong, the contract isn’t good but it’s one that’s moveable. He’s still a reliable bottom 6 C who does everything on the ice except score. Retain 1.5 mil and a team prob throws a 2nd for him. Then there’s the Lee contract, same term as jgp but 2 mil more. 2 extra mil to have 4 more points than Pageau while not killing penalties or playing defense 5v5 while taking 24 penalties compared to jgp’s 4. Mayfield’s is prob worse too imo. Not as bad as it looked this year (mayfield broke his ankle in the 2nd period of game 1 of the regular season and played through it) but give it like 3-4 more years and he will be buried in the minors.

I actually think the peeke contract is fair. He is a solid shut down bottom pairing defenceman with decent skating and a physical edge

He might be injured & therefore not qualify, but, I'd pick/The Washington Capitals as The Goalie that won The Stanley Cup with Colorado, his being backup to Charlie Sideburns Lindgren

Sharks dont care about MEV's contract at this time, so pickles can ride his money into retirement and then hang out with this dogs all day in his backyard.

Freddy Gaudreau's contract is not the worst on the Wild. He was signed for way too long and should have never been given a NTC, but at $2.1M that's not bad value if he bounces back as a decent 4th line center. I'd say it's a tie between Foligno, Hartman, and Spurgeon. Guerin should have never given Foligno and Hartman extensions with a NMC when both could have been moved as assets at the trade deadline. Spurgeon is coming off hip and back surgeries and isn't built for the playoffs.

The worst contract for minnesota is the praise and super still because this year and next year those 2 get 14 mill from the wild to not play. Freddy gaudreau deserved better

While Pageau's contract is less than optimal, Anders Lee has the worst on the Islanders. $7 mil a year for a 34 year old 37 point player is an absolute horror.

As a Jets fan and every person who follows the Jets knows Pionks contract is a lot worse than Schmidt’s. they’re both very bad don’t get me wrong but Pionk is absolute dog water, and is at best a 6th or 7th d man on a good team.

Penguins worst contract HAS to be Ryan Graves. Dude was awful and was a healthy scratch near the end of the season after playing top 4 minutes in the beginning of the year and he’s getting paid something like 4x4.5

I think the Holl contract is worse for the Red Wings. $3.4 million for two more years, and slipped to, like, eighth on the depth chart in his very first season. And he's even older than Copp, so that'll most likely continue to look even worse even faster, somehow. Overpaying for a middle six center in free agency is kinda par for the course, shelling out for a dude that I saw as an extra defenseman out the gate is beyond the pale imo. Unrelated, I see some Spencer Knight mentions in the comments, which is fair considering his salary and place on the depth chart this year, but I also think it's fair to say there's some mitigating circumstances there. There's plenty of time and room for him to bounce back and be more than worthy of that contract, in Florida or elsewhere.

I gotta disagree with you about Nurse having the worst contract, Jack Campbell is getting paid 5.5 million a year to play in the AHL. Nurse’s contract isn’t great, but I wouldn’t say he’s being overpaid an extra 5.5 million. If he was being paid 6.5-7 million then people would have less of a problem with it, whereas with Campbell I don’t know single Oilers fan who is comfortable with paying anything other than a cheap 2-way deal. 5.5 could easily get you a defensive partner for Nurse that could complement his play style and bolster his production. Ken Holland got too confident with poaching leaf players in free agency ever since the Hyman signing, and it’s hindered the Oilers’ potential.
