I know this is a very serious topic, and I’m so glad you’re discussing this but when Adam said “How old were you when you found out sexual assault was bad” and Steve replied with “Younger than 38.” I cracked up. It’s just so ridiculous these politicians are trying to make themselves seem like they had no choice, they were victims in their own right, throwing out any sense of responsibility. This makes me so heated
This behavior is so ugly. Never imagined it was this bad.
As a victim of sexual assault myself, I appreciate y'all covering this story with such a broad platform and in such detail. It gives me a lot of comfort knowing there are folks in the hockey world (where much of this topic and similar ones are so 'taboo') that care deeply about issues like these and are willing to help shine a light on them. My journey with accepting my situation and working through it has been a long one and is still ongoing. But, simply being vulnerable enough and taking the time to learn about the gravity of these situations, the effects they have and the awful politicking, gaslighting, etc. that goes on between the victims, the culprits and everyone else involved is so powerful. Even if anyone reading this haven't been through any situation similar to this one; I guarantee you know someone, no matter their gender identity, that has. So take the time to let the material that Adam, Jesse and Steve are presenting in this podcast, the work of Rick Westhead and Katie Strang, and any other stories you may come across sink in and do not brush them away as non-issues. And to other victims, never be afraid to talk about your experiences and/or seek the necessary help to recover and live the life you deserve to. Anyway, I could ramble forever about this but once again, thank you boys for everything you do
Also, now that he has identified himself, I not only commend but wholeheartedly support Kyle Beach in his healing journey and suggest everyone else does the same.

This paints the scenario for people that men can absolutely be sexually assaulted as well, and that every victim should be supported. Thank you for sharing this.
I'm so sorry this happened to you. And everyone who's ever been a victim of sexual assault. An eloquent post on the whole situation, stay safe, keep healing and thanks for sharing on behalf of so many.
Look at what Arizona did by working out players incorrectly, and they lost draft picks. Chicago is ONLY fined 2 million for this? NO draft picks forfeited? C'mon.
Blackhawks were fined the equivalent of complaining about a referee 8 times.
They were fined the equivalent of a person worth a hundred thousand dollars being fined $200. They're worth over a billion dollars. They got fined 1/500th of their value.
So based on how the owners have been removed of fault and blame based on unawareness to the situation, I'm actually of the mindset it's appropriate not to go crazy on the fine for them. Their commitment to release the report, set the records straight and conduct necessary steps forward are all things you want them to be doing. I don't think you penalize the organization with bigger "fines" or taking draft picks away. If anything, I would rather them start campaigning for player support and abusive victim donations. Stop putting the money back into this broken hockey system and start fighting for the real causes, where money and action do real good.
I think you throw the book at all the management people who were involved at the time and kept this covered up. Then you put the ownership on the organization to do better and take appropriate steps to volunteer, donate, do whatever is necessary to improve these situations across the league, in other leagues, in the community - everything. And if we want to see real change, other organizations and owners should be stepping up to pitch into that cause. Who cares if you weren't involved or didn't do anything wrong - are you for this activity or against it? If you're against it then why not support the path to enlightenment and improvement across the league and in your community. If organizations decide to be bold, you watch NYR and TOR will be the first ones to do it, just like they did with the shared facilities for women's hockey.
It's time we started doing the right things to support people even when we don't benefit from those actions.
@@whoopass2rb good take. It’s important not to assign the same blame to the organization and owner with the actions of the subordinates. In corporations of this size and complexity, while the owners can set policy, they do not design, audit or implement any hr systems or internal corporate structure, and do not generally have any involvement in the hockey club beside holding the organization heads to account for the results and budget. If they were never made aware then they cannot be held to account.
When stuff like this happens it would be the same as in any other industry. All you can ask is that the owner, when made aware, would commission an investigation (either internal or external), hold those accountable who need to be held accountable, and make compensation and changes where necessary.
Anyone who has been in a position where you have subordinates who have their own subordinates understands that your people do not tell you everything. If they did they wouldn’t be doing their jobs. The more layers under you, the less you actually know about the day to day. Not saying this should not have been communicated to the owner, it absolutely should have, but the fact that it wasn’t was the fault of the GM and team president, not the owner.
Of course at the time of this comment the owner is assumed to be unaware.
The Kyle Beach interview was one of the hardest things i’ve ever watched. So much pain in his eyes, this whole situation breaks my heart. Kyle is a hero, and thank you guys for using your platform to talk about such unspeakable acts. Much respect.

We really do appreciate how much time you guys are dedicating to this story. That episode with Rick westhead was illuminating and the more that comes out, the more it becomes obvious that this league has a major issue.

@@liambaillie8428 deserves an American award for sure. I’d put his journalism in the same category as the watergate investigation by bob woodward. Lots of similarities between both too. Two big cover ups and lots of lying. I also argued with someone yesterday that we must assume they wrote the letter of recommendation as well since hawks lied about everything else. They (players, coaches, etc) have 0 credibility.

Haven't watched yet. I know it's going to a bit hard to hear all the gory details but, for me, it's a must watch. It's an ugly event that needs to discussed. You guys were the only hockey commenters to discuss the whole thing at length and that's a real service to the hockey community.
Towes, Kane and Keith have all denied they knew this was happening. It strains credulity at best to believe the captain or the assistant captains -- the every day superstars of the team -- had no idea this was happening when a recalled 4th liner and a 3rd pairing D-man did. Strains credulity at best.
They knew, but it was not on them to do anything about it.

@@zigfield723 This is a podcast with a significant audience in the hockey fan community and Steve works for a network. Both Steve and Adam are public figures, small market or not. Not exactly me and my buds on a podcast. Still! Just a cast. Yet they had more journalistic integrity than many of the big names who ignored this story for months when it was able to be ignored - prioritizing access/politics over researching the truth & informing the public. This is the kind of behavior that STOPS tragedies like what happened here (where after an assault, yet more people were hurt.) Speaking up and not dropping it, when that is the moral choice. Not staying silent when it's socially awkward and inconvenient. When it isn't fun. We should admire and support this behavior when we see it in both small and big situations.
This reflects an issue that is present in every aspect of "first world" societies, we have left morals out of every significant decision. Any person you ask face to face knows what the right action would have been, but put money and politics in the mix and people start using another kind of logic.

Kyle Beach is a hero.
From Chicago. We knew John Mcdonough ran the Blackhawks with an iron fist and is an egomaniac. He did nothing for the Blackhawk's success but certainly took a lot of credit. Stan is another story. He has 2 boys that play AAA hockey and he should be ashamed of himself and never be able to show his face in any hockey-related venue. We knew Al Mcissac was McDonough's lacky. What I did not know were Joel Quenneville's comments. He should be not allowed to coach. Kevin Cheveldayoff should be dismissed as GM of the Jets. I was lucky to share season tickets from 2009 till 2016. But I got out because I could see the organization's arrogancy. I WAS BLACKHAWK FAN.

I’m 18. I was 7 in 2010. 2010 happened to be the year I discovered hockey and the Chicago Blackhawks. I don’t know the hawks before that season. Every person I looked up to. The TEAM i looked up to. Its all tainted now, and its all been a lie from the cover up. Every ounce of blackhawks hockey have been a lie.
I felt so many emotions the last couple days. I loved this team and they meant everything to me. too was a blackhawks fan. On the brightside, we have a new nhl team this year. Gave me the perfect out and I am now a Seattle Kraken fan

The Circle the Wagons response is so common when it comes sexual assault and misconduct. Not only is it immoral, unethical, and usually illegal, it typically makes matters worse for the victims and the organization.Thank you, guys, for reporting this with the care, seriousness, and depth this story needs. Thank you also for your thoughtfulness regarding those listeners who have been victims of sexual assault and could be triggered by this information.

This is what separates you guys. Stellar stuff throughout all the reporting you have committed on, especially from Westhead, and keeping with it since this horrific story broke. Huge respect.
As someone who has recently experienced metal abuse at work from the HR department no less, and my union telling me to just forget about it and move on. Everything said by you three hits home, and while i know that the abuse types are different, hearing about this at the best of times would be difficult, but going through it in the moment is gutting during an already gutting time. Thank you gentlemen for saying all the things that need to be said and offer hope that there are people out there not willing to back down from speaking up.

I read the report and I didn't get through it all at once. It was a tough read and I'm impressed with the courage it took to speak up..I got emotional reading it too...what a lonely place to be within an organization knowing you are not valued enough to be protected from a situation that should have never happened..to the player who this happened to, I'm so very sorry you've been so deeply betrayed and ignored...I pray you can find healing at some point..

This hurts my heart to listen to. My team signed TDA, and I struggled to come up with ways to justify that. The NHL is just not a place where I can feel relaxed and happy.

Thank you guys for putting so much effort reporting on this issue and putting pressure on the people involved. As a women NHL fan who unfortunately been through a similar situation it is so refreshing listening to 3 guys speak about this the way you guys are not making excuses and being so disgusted about it. I hope justice for the victims will be served and they can live the rest of their lives in peace

I hope Kyle Beach could come onto the SDPN for an interview, it was interesting how some people had speculated about Kyle Beach was John Doe. I hope for brighter days ahead for the victims of Brad Aldrich.
After listening to all this I'm pissed off and sad as hell. I am a Leafs fan, but I became a blackhawks supporter because my late uncle was a fan of them too. After they won the cup, I'd never seen him so happy and to celebrate he bought me a red Blackhawks jersey and cap. He ended up passing a few weeks after that and I still have both the jersey and cap. I'm conflicted about what to do.
Kudos to you guys I commented earlier when I first started watching and so far you guys are the only ones that have touched that they didn't do a good job of hiding his identity and I really liked your idea at the end where someone can go to a third party commitee

I was watching highlights of last nights games and tbh it was hard to find love in the sport. In time I’m sure this will change but all I hope is that all victims find peace and happiness in life.

Jesse's point about when you try and report something you get silenced and those people then get to keep their jobs resonates with me. Happened at my previous job. I was encouraged to report an incident that implicated 3 management level staff and instead of them doing anything about it I was pulled into a "Protected Conversation" with the chairman of the board and given a pay-off to leave instead. So there I was out of work and depressed with life and there they are carrying on as usual and have since gone onto bigger and better things in their industry. It's everywhere and it's bullshit
As a hockey fan in myself, I can’t take myself to sit and enjoy a game on a stream or cable tv. Hearing and listening to the difficult, life damaging abuse, and words being spoken. I feel a dark sadness and anger combined into one. There is no acceptable behaviour for the actions to take place in the NHL. Not only as a fan I’m disgusted but as a individual person.

Thanks guys for continuing to cover this. And I couldn't agree more about what should be done going forward. And I would add that my Blackhawks should be leading the charge. They should also make it their number one community program to support organizations that help survivors of SA and erase the stigma associated with male survivors specifically.
So I know sexual assault is much different than cheating. But in the Astros cheating scandal the executives still with the Astros were fired. And the Manager at the time Alex Cora who moved onto Boston was suspended a full season. I could see that being a possible outcome for Quenville and Cheveldave who were all in Chicago at the time but are now employed elsewhere.
Tremendous podcast. The pivot from the normal jovial format was appropriate and well done. It's not about the coaches or the Stanley cup run, it's about the victims. Especially the ones that could have been protected had the video coach been confronted and charged at the time.
Do you guys remember when Gary bettman and bill daly laughed off all the questions about the Blackhawk incident. And said we have to wait and see what comes of it. They seemed so sure it was going to come back with no results

One name who has currently escaped any questioning is Patrick sharp. People always talk about how the blackhawks, especially that first cup run, were led by committee. Not that it absolves him of anything, but it was toews' first year as captain and sharp was a huge part of that leadership group.
I'm not a Twitter outrage cancel people kind of guy, but it does seem to me sharp also has some explaining to do. Especially with guys lower on the pecking order like sopel saying everybody knew. If, at worst case, sharp was an active participant in the bullying during that run and the following year, nbcsn might want to reconsider their working relationship with him as well.
Again, just saying this as someone who noticed that sharp hasn't publicly spoken about this to my knowledge. I don't have any particular grudge against the player. Excellent 2-way top-6 center on the ice. Hopefully he wasn't an active participant.

I haven’t had a chance to listen to the whole podcast yet so this may have been touched on but there’s some questions to ask about why this was swept under the rug… we can’t rule out the possibility that the team either knew about these sorts of things happening for longer and they just accept it as a part of their organization (which they did anyway when they didn’t do anything about it after the meeting) or they knew about it prior and acting on it would have implicated them at that time…

Why is Quenneville still coaching tonight...disgusting. That guy knew the entire story and covered it up because the Blackhawks wanted to win the Stanley Cup and that was his focus.. Aldridge name should be removed from the Stanley Cup.
Something really interesting THG pointed out in his video yesterday. In all the comments about the meeting that are in the report, NO ONE suggests that Beach isn't telling the truth. The conversation is about timing and when to deal with the situation. Disgusting
So NHL network called Kyle Beach the ‘accuser’ instead of victim. Good to see they are making progress, assuming this was 1951 and not 2021. WTF
The parties in power with knowledge need to be held accountable. Florida coach , Winnipeg GM, Wirtz family, NHLPA, and the NHL itself. This is a disgrace and my daughter is asking me lots of questions as to the why by Chicago!!!!!
My opinion on the owners and captain "not knowing anything" is that even if it is true is a HUGE issue. I always think of this quote from Harvey Specter in Suits when someone like that say that they didnt know: "He told me he didn't know anything about it. You know what his problem was? It was his goddamn job to know!"
which is a bullshit suits quote.. no father knows what their sons are doing outside of the house, come on. Havey is a fun tv character, but that one is ridiculous.
It's totally possible Kyle Beach didn't speak a word of it and because he never played with the team in the NHL, well the captain never got close to him and never knew. Not only it's possible, it's the most likely.

I know this is a potentially silly request, but I wonder if it would be possible to do a collage of all your excerpts on this topic from past episodes and make it into one video. Rick Westhead, among others, has done some fantastic work on this matter. If there is a prize for this kind of quality journalism, Rick's name should be on top of the list.

John McDonough is a very well known sports exec in Chicago. 20 years first with the Chicago Cubs during the time they were moving from a terrible team to a successful team. Then he moved on to the Blackhawks who also turned their franchise into a winning franchise.
Bowman didn’t apologize because - as Adam suggested - he’d be falling on a live multimillion dollar lawsuit.

As a Blackhawks fan myself this genuinely hurts me so much. I was only 10 during that season so I've looked up to these guys my entire life. Being a victim myself, I haven't been able to bring myself to read the report or watch Kyle's interview yet but I know I need to soon. Everyone in the hawks org should have been fired instead of being allowed to resign. I have lost all respect for Toews and Kane as well because they knew and they didn't do an thing. I don't even know how to feel anymore. The cup years were a big part of my childhood/early teen years and some of my best memories from being a hawks fan come from those years and it just sucks man. The only people left in the organization from that team are Kane and Toews so I feel like I can still cheer for them but I'm just numb man
@mojo I plan on watching it, I just haven’t been able to bring myself too yet. I’ve had a really hard time processing all of this, especially as a victim of SA myself so it’s been a bit of a struggle so I’m slowly trying to process and work my way to watching his interview and reading the report
These people should be punished more than just allowing them to step down. Stepping down for ignoring sexual assault?! That's it? Or allowing anyone to say they didn't know?! A coach or GM didn't know?! No. Not acceptable. joel quenneville needs to be fired and banned from the nhl. I'd even think it's fair to strip him of his championship. Not the Blackhawks but the GM and Coach. They should be banned and have any accolades stripped.
And the added complication to what the solution is is that you also can't over correct and ruin someone's career over an accusation which after investigation is proven to be false but then they can't shrug off the fact that there was even the accusation. Really don't know how these situations should be handled because finding that balance where the correct action is found in a reasonable time without affecting someone's life/career more than has already happened is difficult.
I wonder if the Black Ace one incident around 2014 when Beach was chased around the ice played a major factor in him being traded to the New York Rangers on December 6th 2013. Late 2013 is around 2014, and possibly happened just before he was traded, and he likely wanted to be traded anywhere as he no longer felt safe in Rockford. Or maybe that incident happened when he spent the rest of the season in Hartford (the Rangers AHL team)
By no means did anything like this happen to me but having reached out for help for some issues I have been struggling with, I’ve found the system is set up in no way to actually help people. I can only figure that something like this is worse than what I’ve had to deal with just to get some help
The NHL has to clean house. Quenneville gone, Cheveldayoff gone, Hell sounds like Guerin's gotta go too. Breaks my heart as a wild fan, just as we had some competent management. But you can't let this go unpunished.
Guerin was found innocent I’m pretty sure.
Don't forget Bergevin, NO way he didn't know and NO way he wasn't in that meeting

Although I'm not a lawyer, I suspect that being allowed to step down instead of being fired is more of a legal manoeuvre than a way to save face.
In the case of a mutual agreement, they likely signed a contract where they waive all rights to appeal or sue the organization, in exchange for a severance package.
However, as awesome it would feel to have them fired from their jobs, they would likely use that opportunity to start a costly legal battle for wrongful termination, accuse the investigation of a 'witch hunt' and/or accuse that the victims lied, meaning that the victims would have to go through this all over again. What's worse is that if the victims choose to not testify again, the accused could very well win.
As much as I hate it, I think this is the best way forward for the victims, even if it means losing a bit of the impact from what a firing would do. And by a agreeing mutually, they are essentially admitting fault, and will likely never work in hockey again.
Also consider that this is not a police matter, but rather a corporate investigation. This _should_ have been a police matter, but as this is only a civil matter, this is the best scenario in my opinion.
Great breakdown guys on this terrible story. All the best to Kyle Beach, man, such a hard interview to watch. I'm glad he finally got the chance to tell his side of the story. Blows my mind how all the executives tried to bury this under the rug, disgusting!

If this show was a sitcom it would have started with the slower sad version of the usual theme
I can't imagine this has zero effect on the team and their play..this would mess with anyones head, much less the people on the ice trying to play hockey..this is such a serious situation and continuing to play under this organization has got to feel really awful..I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear about players wanting to leave...and maybe they should..
The blackhawks organization being fined $2,000,000 is the equivalent of an individual making $50,000 annual salary being fined $561.80. Bettman is completely wrong. That is not a significant fine. That is not a deterrent in the slightest to other teams to prevent something like this from happening again. That fine is downright disrespectful to the victims.
