Thanks, yours was the only video that actually helped, it took me over an hour but I finally got it! I took the rifle to my local gunsmith and he refused to even do it. He said that he doesn't work on 597s (but they'd be happy to sell me one though)..
Gordon Armistead-I just bought the whole bolt assembly for $59 bucks on ebay.took 30 minutes or so to replace it with a factory OEM bolt.kept the old one for a spare.My gunsmith will replace it for about $60.
Thanks. Between you and one other, I just installed mine that I've had since 2020 as a back up. Your method plus a slight push with a small screwdriver snapped it in to place. Tested it with snap caps. Works great. Soon I'll take it out and see if it makes a difference with the Remington 30 round mags as some have said. Just need to wait till I'm done with my late season elk hunting.

I ended up finally getting it out by rotating a bent tip paperclip through the little hole underneath it to push it out from the inside. Showing the angle it needs to be to come out would be helpful. Unfortunately, I don't remember because I blacked out a little during the process. If it doesn't work right after this I will enjoy throwing this gun in the lake.
Great video in general, but when showing details, hold still long enough for the camera to focus on the up close view. And remember you're making a video. When you showed the action springs installed, you tilted it up (towards your head, I think so you could see it) and killed the camera's shot of the installed springs. But still a very helpful video. Hei. Yes had no problem with it after that. Its important also too use original magazin (the 10 raunds) if you use 30 rounds aftermarked you will stil have problems. But then you know that problem is in the magazin not in the rifle. Gona make one video of me testing the rifile on the shooting range when its one day stops snowing here hehe
Just ordered an entire extractor kit from Mcarbo.com to replace broken and missing pieces from my rifle. While target shooting, it blew the spring and the little plunger right back into my face and I was unable to locate the parts. Glad I was wearing glasses to protect my eyes
It's probably a 7 or 8 year old rifle. I've shot it alot. I fixed it myself for $18 because I didn't want to send it back to Remington and deal with that whole hassle. From what I can tell, the extractor is a pretty common issue on the model 597
As many of us owners know the 597 is a pain-in-the-ass to reassemble. Yes some gunsmiths will not bother with them. The way those little captive screws hold the recoil springs in place is bullshit. Get the screws in too tight and the recoil springs bind. Get them in too lose and you will have problems. So play the "captive screw guessing game" and turn them back out a quarter of a turn or so and hope for the best.
yeh agree :) Ppl buy it anyway, because 597 is so cheap and fun to shoot. So it seems that Remington dont care to fix it. When you take extractor out and put it beside volquartsen extractor , you will clearly see difference in quality. Remington extractor poor quality
Just never buying a remington again. I am so pissed off that they would put such a piece of shit out to market that it requires aftermarket parts to fix and shoot as it should.
Terrible camera work. It keeps jumping up and down and out of focus, No close ups where they need to be like when removing the ejector. Get the proper size allen wrench instead of that multi-tool you fumble around with trying to find the right size end. Put the action is a "V" rest so it isn't wobbling all around. Good intentions, but bad presentation.
You make a video on how to replace an extractor and the camera is jumping around like crazy and out of focus and you don't show the orientation of the extractor in the hole...dumb
I do the extractor installation inside a clear plastic bag to prevent the tiny parts from flying away when things go wrong.

I use the plastic bag trick when dealing with a variety of small parts that tend to go flying.

I just bought the complete factory OEM bolt on eBay and replaced the whole bolt with new one in 30-45 minutes...
A new one does not fix the problem.. mine was new.. extractor fails way too often, cannot even fill my 10 shot mag
By replacung the whole bolt assembly it does fix the problem.Mine has worked flawlessly for over 2 yrs now.
i changed mine tonight and all kinds off issues terrible .double feeding ,fte, dangerous
either keep the camera still or keep your hand still when trying to show the part installed
