  • Whew this one is old. I think there's more than one kid out there, probably around my age, who wanted a 10/22 as a kid, but ended up settling for grandpa's pump action .22 I know I ain't the only one.

    13 years into my 597 and still enjoying it. Wish there were more accessories available for it like there are for the 10/22.

      That is because the Ruger 10/22 has been out since 1964 where as the Remington 597 came out in 1997 I think it was. So the Ruger had a 30+ years to build a cult type following and is also much more reliable then the 597.

      @@sjgavenger37 I agree that out of the box the 10/22 "generally" is more relaiable. I mean, I have an old one and a new one, and they both work great, and shoot reasonably accurately. With upgraded parts in the 597, I have yet to have any kind of issues at all with it, it's as reliable as any ruger. That said, I've recently bought one of the gsg-16s and that thing is accurate, cool looking and reliable. I went through 1000 rounds of cci mini mags without one malfunction, dry right out of the box. So I cleaned it, and it's now my "in the headboard for those bumps in the night" gun. Frangible ammo so that rounds don't go through drywall ;)

      The 10/22 I have is from around 1973. My dad bought it new then gave it to me a few years ago as it was my favorite rifle to shoot. I have shot a few Marlins in my time but never got a chance to shoot the 597. I recently changed out the scope from a 3-6 to a 3-9x50. Only had a chance to fire like 50 rnds to test and zero in the new scope. Unfortunately it was a busy day at the range that day so wasn't able to do it properly. Had too many irresponsible/inconsiderate shooters that day to be able to set up a target. The guy next to me was blasting away without actually aiming so I got tired of used shells landing on my head.

    I would love to own both including a marlin 795. I have the 597 and love it but you can never have too many .22s. I enjoy how they all have their individual appearance and perks. That's why I love Remington, Ruger, and Marlin.

    My 597 was completely unreliable as brand new...multiple jams with every magazine. My friend's daughter had the same issues with hers. I installed Volquartsen aftermarket extractors in them and now they both work great. The rifle was made from really cheap parts, but I really like the design of the mechanisms. I love the dual bolt spring system! The rifle is really accurate, too!

    • @High_Caliber
      @High_Caliber  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This video is pretty old, and I have to admit to not having it out more than a couple of times, which is a shame, because I did the same upgrades including the springs and extractor and it's a really reliable plinker, and the chunkier form factor feels better than the 10/22, but it's just so easy to grab the 10/22...memories of childhood and all, but I agree with you 100% on the 597. It's weird that remington never improved it, could have been an all time classic.

      The 597 is a jam-o-matic right out of the box. Remington’s quality has gone to the dogs in the last 10 years. They are only running on their prior name history. You will be buying the Volquartsen extractor for this model rifle.

    If any of you guys are thinking on getting one of those plastic 30-round Remington extended magazines for the Remington, let me tell you that most of them require a little work before they start functioning as intended. In my case I had to take them apart and kind of "polish" the inner front wall of the magazine, where the tip of the rounds were getting stuck with plastic residue from the thermal gluing, with some long sand paper. I just put the mag in the vise and then made several passes with long string of sand paper. After cleaning all the waste plastic, they started feeding properly, although I haven't been able to load them with more than 25 rounds. 20 for comfort.
    The 10-shot metallic mags on the other hand work perfectly all the time. Keep Shooting makes the best quality ones. Cheers!

    • @seniorsurvivor7381
      @seniorsurvivor7381 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I haven't had any feed issues with my 30 rnd mag yet (probably just luck of the draw) but I will take it apart and clean the inner seam like you recommend. I have found the 10 rnd mag to be flawless and I like that it is easy to disassemble for cleaning. 20 rounds load easy, 25 gets tough...30, well you are really working for those last five rounds and for the time and aggravation it takes to load the, I think leaving it to 20 or 25 rounds is the better bet.
      Great tip on the mag, Thanks. :)

    Tried the 10/22, loved it. Tried the Remington 597, loved it enough that I bought one. What drove me to the 597 is really price point. If Ruger can make a simplistic 10/22 variant then that would be something to aim for. The 597 has the same if not better quality than your standard 10/22 in my opinion. Cleaning is simple, last round hold open, same monte carlo style, and its cheaper. The only issue with the 597 is some magazines are duds. I have 2 30 round magazines and the stock 10 round. One of my 30 round mags has a feeding issue where the round will stay stuck down far in the mag. Tried playing around with the spring but no luck. I'm going to return it for another one but thats what's really killing sales for the 597, lack of quality mags and lack of modification options. But hey, all boom sticks have their pros and cons

      I'd go with the 10-22 to be honest. I still have both of these, but I had to upgrade a lot of the internals on the 5897 with volquartsen parts to get it to be 100% reliable. I prefer the feel to the 597, but the ruger always just works.

  • @richslatt

    The remington 597 barrel can also be cleaned from the chamber end by simply pulling out the rubber bolt buffer when the action has been disassembled. This is a big advantage over the marlin 60/795, mossberg plinkster, and the non takedown 10/22.

    My VTR 597 has been amazing! No issues and are anykinda ammo I threw at it. Love the heavy barrel and here in Canada the 597 magazine have no legal capacity unlike the 1022 which can legally hold 10.
    My 1022 TD has been not so great. Failure to go into battery, failure to eject and sometimes even Slam fire from the bolt traveling forward causing the round to get stuck in the barrel.
    Put about $350 worth of parts into it and now it will shoot Federal ammo about 80% reliability.
    597 for the win!

    You can make a little spring assembly tool with a small piece of tin like from a can cover. Cut a small square and bend it around a pencil to shape it into a horse shoe. Use it to push the spring down while feeding. Just a thought.

      This is quite and old video...but I will admit that while I tend to buy and sell guns fairly frequently, I have kept both of these. Upgrading the extractor on the remington helped tons with its reliability, and I prefer the solid feel and heft of the 597. However, the ruger breaks down, is quite accurate, AND has better magazines....if only it had a last round hold open and a slightly larger charging handle I'd likely never bring out the 597.

      The only issue I have had with the 597 take down is putting the two guide rail springs back in. Quite the pain in the butt! After doing it a few times, it isn't all that bad but still not as simple as the 10/22 and no where near as simple as the Savage 64. Still, the 597 is a great shooter at an awesome price. It has a Model 700 feel to it when shouldering it. Very nice iron sights but still no comparison to a scope. Great video. :)

      +Matt Taniguchi I've actually had a 10/22 for years and only found this out recently when I was looking at MKIII pistols. Generally, I just leave the yellow drywall anchors in my .22s as they are cheaper than snap caps and last longer :)

    On the Remington 597, don't torque the bolt guide rod set screws or you will bow the rods and the action won't cycle properly. Don't worry about the set screws backing out, they are held captive by the stock.

    That being said, when it came time to "hand-me-down" one of them to a friend with a new shooter in the house, I gave up the Ruger 10/22 and kept the Rem 597 for myself.
    The 597 (HBLS model) breaks aspirin tablets and horseflies at 100 yards without fail, and is simpler to break down for cleaning, in my opinion.

      The 597 is a great rifle, but the 10/22 is pretty much its own market. There are almost as many aftermarket parts for the Ruger as there ar for ARs.

      +Alexander Grace The 10/22 is "so close" to being the perfect .22 semi auto. Last round hold open and a better action release right out of box would be very welcome. Mine doesn't even have a sling mount. Just little things, but they add up. :)

      After some adjustments to elevation, I was shooting quarter sized groups with my 10/22 (with factory High Visibility sights) at 25 yds. Silver dollar grouping with the 597 using factory iron sights. I put a cheap 3-9 x 40 scope on it, sighted it in and turning the .22 cal hole into a .30 - .35 cal hole at 25 yds. A little larger grouping than yours but still an very nice shooting rifle. Can't beet the bang for the buck, if you'll excuse the pun.

      Actually that's common on both the 597 and 10/22s. Just fire about 200 rounds trough it, then take it down as I did in this vid and clean/lube it. The packing oil and/or fitment on these are from mass production lines, they can take a bit of break in. If it's still doing it, see if you can try another magazine. Once they get going, these things tend to purr along pretty good. Mine was actually second hand, so I lucked out that it just shot right away. Oh, and lastly make sure you try different ammo brands, some guns can be picky about certain brands, and it's just one of those things you get to know as your relationship with your new rifle grows :)

      waldo pepper I'm actually going to answer this question in a video response, but it's twofold: 1) It's a REALLY good habit to check a firearm every single time it's out of your hand for a moment, and 2) if you don't show the firearm is clear, you will get 1000 Safety Sally responses of "HEY! You didn't check that firearm first!!!"

      Filadelfo Zuñiga agreed, but clarkson on top gear doesnt start every review of every car saying its in neutral and the hand brake is on. im asking why the need to constantly state the fact, not that its wrong to have the gun unloaded.

      waldo pepper I see your point, but cars and guns are quite diferent, the both carry similar responsabilities sure. But in cars there is more space for mistakes(that not being a excuse for being irresponsible), but if u mess up with a gun is easier to get a huge problem

    Nice vid! I have a takedown exactly like the one shown here. I find that every time I remove the barrel, the accuracy changes. I am baffled as I have tried everything. I am a fan of the 10/22 but I am seriously considering selling it for something else. Any ideas?

      there's no way that barrel can lock back into the same exact position every time. even if it's a thousands off it will affect accuracy down range.

      +The Real Outdoor Experience I currently have a 3-9 scope on the takedown, and yes I have noticed it can shift a bit, but I can still hit a 2" ball on the 85 range 90% of the time, so I'm good with that. I think I'm going to get another 4-5 MOA micro red dot for the ruger, as that is probably about as accurate as it is...

      I had the 17HMR and they offered 200.00 credit for a Remington product OR a barrel of different caliber. I sent it in and had a 22WMR barrel installed at no charge. The factory magazine works for both calibers. This was all done under the 17HMR recall notice.

    Have you replaced that steel buffer rod in your 1022 yet, if not why not ? Just a note, you do not need to buy an expensive nylon buffer rod,...just go buy a really cheap 1/4" x 2" nylon bolt, cut off the head and the threaded section and then lightly sand down the sharp edges or very slightly round off the cut ends, to make sliding it in easier, and there you have it, and really cheap buffer rod that should last for ages !

    • @High_Caliber
      @High_Caliber  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Reg Sparkes I may try that, however I'm currently looking to pick up a better charging handle for mine, the stock one is just so tiiiiny. Some of those kits come with upgraded guide rods (I think). Thing is, the 10/22 just keeps working, it's hard to justify spending $$$ on it. The GSG 1911 or the ISSC MKII however.....CRAAAP!!!

      @regsparkes6507 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      YES, I do agree whole heartedly,especially on that GSG 1911, mine had it's slide wear so badly after no more than 250 rounds, that I can't fire it any more. I've been waiting now for about 3 months for a new slide to arrive! ( Being replaced under warranty, I might add.)
      Now back to that 10/22's charging handle is crying out to be 'up-graded'. I was using mine at the range ( indoor ) last week, and that darned little piece got to me too.
      But who makes one that is not half the price of this Ruger ?

    • @High_Caliber
      @High_Caliber  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha I'm looking at the Kidd handle, but yes, the price is keeping me away.
      I bought the ZRTS ultimate upgrade for the gsg, and so far has improved accuracy and function quite a bit. It doesn't shoot like my buckmark, but WAY better than it did. It eliminates the takedown screw and tightens up the slop in the barrel bushing 100% (which might help with slide wear). It's yet one more thing I should do a video on, but even today I bought a new sniper rig in .223 and it's more fun to work on them and shoot than play with the camera :)

      clifford clark I don't like to answer if I'm not sure, but I would imagine the mechanism would be the same with a beefier spring for the bolt to compensate for the higher recoil. I don't think they would redesign the action except to accommodate the larger cartridge. Still, that's just a guess.

      Odd, since the stock on the 597 is thicker, heavier and much more solid than the hollow feeling 10/22. I'm not knocking the ruger, but their stocks can be really cheesy sometimes. The stock on the pc carbine is an exception, that thing is extremely solid, but on the takedown in this vid, no such luck. Moral is, don't judge a gun by a silly youtube vid :)

    The rem 597 is a piece of Sh!T. Mine Jammed on any ammo other than Federal brand. The 597 magazine is a nightmare with every round needing attention when being loaded. Bolt doesn't lock back and return springs belong in ball point pens not a rifle. Don't know why the springs were so difficult for this guy to handle. The extractor just flew the hell off one day! Did I say the 597 is a piece of crap?

    • @High_Caliber
      @High_Caliber  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +WhatDoYouReallyMean Keep it clean and they run great. No idea how you can have trouble with the magazines, I have 6 for it, the 10 rounders, and can't remember every having an issue. I'm not one to say a gun is good when it's crap, and remington sure isn't sending me any bribe money, these just work (and hold open on the last round).

    • @WhatDoYouReallyMean
      @WhatDoYouReallyMean 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many seem not to have had any problems but I most certainly did. Rounds had to be perfectly arranged in the magazine to be fully chambered. A couple people who looked at the rifle suspected some type of misalignment seeing how the bolt would sometimes not fully close without a light touch. This is what lead to the extractor failing. Different magazines had no effect. Remington ammo would jam like a champ yet how much difference is there between manufacturers. The return springs were cheaply made in my opinion. I bought the rifle in 1997-98 so I'm sure it has improved with time but I will never own another. Glad yours works for you...

      I just got mine about a month ago. It could be that back in the late 90's they were poorly made but I am certain that over the years Remington has corrected any issues with them. Mine shoot really well and is pretty accurate too. I've ran several brands of ammo through it without fail. With issues like that, I don't blame you for not wanting another one.
