Toyota BZ4X: The Japanese firm's first EV

  • Considering that Toyota pretty much wrote the book on mainstream petrol-electric hybrid cars, it seems a little odd that it's taken the firm quite so long to break into the EV market. But broken in it finally has, and with this, the all-new - and snappily named - BZ4X.
    This new family SUV is about the same size as a RAV4, and its all-electric drivetrain comes with a 71.4kWh battery and choice of either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and an official WLTP range of 317 miles or 257 miles, respectively.
    The thing is, midsize electric SUVs are all the rage right now, to the BZ4X has literally dozens of rivals all competing for the same buyers. So, does the Toyota stand out? In this CarGurus UK video review, Vicky Parrott answers that very question by thoroughly assessing the car in terms of its quality, technology, practicality, and of course, what it's like to drive.

    Excellent review as always. Comprehensive and to the point. Now that Tesla have slashed prices would not see any real point in getting this. Although is a big improvement over the Lexus UXe and its Chademo set up! Real world range and efficiency is meant to be far worse than the WLTP, something the Tesla's are excellent at. If I want a Toyota, I don't look at a Tesla regardless of price. I don't know how many will go for the best price but there are people that just don't want Teslas for whatever reason. I like the overall comfort and refinement of Toyotas. But, now Hyundai has a lot of comfort and much of the refinement as well.

    I'm baffled by the positive reviews that this car gets. When I read the specs I was very surprised at how mediocre to bad they were. EV buyers generally care about range, charging speed and horsepower. These cars are heavy so horsepower is more important than in ICE versions. You'd think with the low horsepower this has it would have good range to make up for it but it doesn't. The EV 6 and the Ioniq 5 are far superior on the things most people care about and they don't look like a car that was repaired at a body shop that didn't have the right parts. Are the reviewers trying to be diplomatic? Are they afraid to upset Toyota? I think this shows that Toyota still doesn't believe in electric cars, which makes me wonder why they made it at all. It's not super expensive for an EV and it sits higher than most, but it needs to have more than that going for it. Badly done Toyota! Badly done indeed! But they will sell if Toyota doesn't make too many of them.

    • @superscooper18
      @superscooper18 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the average Toyota buyer doesn't generally know what type of engine their car has (V6, V8, turbo) nor do they really care. All they care about is that it's a Toyota and their are known for quality. etc. That said, Toyota will fall from their sales throne in the next few years as the disillusionment will set in and people will realize their EV's suck. They are making a new platform now so that they can catch up but IMO they are waaaay too late. It will take several years maybe to 2028-2030 before they can even become profitable on EVs , meanwhile Tesla will be able to price them out of the market. To compete they would have to sell at a loss, but with the amount of debt they have ($120+ Billion) they will not be able to hold the bleeding. They are so screwed.

    Great review thanks ! - apart from the model name which sounds like a strain of Covid, I like the design even though the shut line where the bonnet meets the headlights looks a bit off. Other than that, it's a cool looking car and hallelujah it comes on fairly sensible sized wheels instead of ditch finders. Interior is OK although a bit uninspiring. It's at least an improvement on a lot of Toyota 's efforts but there are still areas that look like they have had zero effort. I think Toyota have got away with it, but only just, and they will probably sell loads based on their reputation for reliability. It's hardly a game changer though and it could look off the pace quite quickly.

    • @datathunderstorm
      @datathunderstorm ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s always the same attitude towards modern technology, isn’t it? Snide and sneering comments about a new revolutionary technology which the writer has never tried, never really taken a keen genuine interest in and will never venture anywhere near it given half a chance.
      I find it fascinating that similarly negative comments were flying around when the first mass produced Toyota Prius Hybrid (2nd generation) was introduced to the market.
      Myriad myths abounded about how the battery would last barely 3 years before it completely died, then would cost more than the price of the car too replace.
      The failed battery would then end up in landfill - polluting the planet.
      The electrics would allegedly repeatedly fail in no time at all and no mechanic would be able to fix it - ergo it would be an extremely unreliable car.
      It was a glorified milk float - nobody would want to be seen dead in one.
      They were terribly slow vehicles incapable of keeping up with traffic in town and dangerous to drive on motorways.
      The depreciation would be terrible after 5 years and the Prius would be worthless because of the price of replacement batteries.
      And guess what? Absolutely NONE OF THE ABOVE MYTHS TURNED OUT TO BE TRUE.
      I bought a 2008 Prius Tspirit in 2013 despite the wails of horror from almost everyone I told I intended to buy one. 10 years later, it’s still on its original Hybrid Synergy Drive drivetrain and at 15 years old, still has its original traction battery which works flawlessly. Everything still works apart from the Airconditioning which developed a slow leak a year ago. Water pump changed at 99k miles.
      Bought it at 54.5k miles. Now 145.8k miles and apart from annual servicing (at Toyota of course) and replacing standard wear and tear parts - it just keeps going.
      As it turned out, the 2nd Gen Prius was heavily over engineered - which is why there are still many of them plying the roads today with that smug silver grin on their grilles!
      My whole point of mentioning this it, Toyota know EXACTLY what they are doing. They’ve come late to the EV arena, but they do have a legendary history of unparalleled reliability.
      I have no doubts that the bz4X will be another over engineered Toyota product which will keep going flawlessly, long after many other EV models in its class have become troublesome and start exhibiting build quality issues.
      Instead of coming up with imaginative witty (albeit puerile and infantile) ways to put a revolutionary new vehicular product down, perhaps it would be a very good idea to acquaint and educate yourself about modern EV technologies and keep an open mind.
      There’s nothing remotely mediocre about the technology in the bz4X, just as the 2nd Gen Prius turned out to be so good, Mini Cab / Taxi companies invested in them and ran them to as much as 500k miles on the original drivetrains - and made a tremendous profit from their reliability.
      Unfortunately market forces make EVs expensive the world over. Established manufacturers like Toyota will carry a price premium over cheaper EVs from China or Korea - but the quality ALWAYS shines through.
      EVs still aren’t for everyone, but when they do suit your needs, they’re great! YMMV.
      Depreciation? Are you on the same planet as I am?
      Market forces and the lack of various processor chips used in automobile technologies has seen a slow down in the availability of new vehicles for sale (thanks to the pandemic).
      EVs are very desirable right now, especially in cities with ULEZ and other restrictive emissions zones. The race to purchase an ULEZ compliant car in the UK has bumped the prices of compliment 2nd hand cars up considerably.
      EVs remain expensive to buy on the used markets - unless they’re a brand with a troublesome history to begin with - Toyota doesn’t fall into that category.
      You may pay a premium for a Toyota EV right now, but you will get your money’s worth in the long run. I note the latest Prius cars on sale 2nd hand are NOT depreciating heavily right now - so that fate will never befall the Toyota bz4X.

    I mean there's only SO much rear-leg-room that a person needs, especially kids, considering it's aimed at families... if the rear seat bench were able to slide back & forth to free up boot space, then that'd be a start - that's where families actually NEED the space, surely...! 🤔

First they remove weapons, then they force you to accept stupid laws, then you don't comply, then they shut off your cell and car...So BEWARE!!! This is a mess... and the charging station also require you to get a cellphone... Pros: I like the shape of this car but CONS: it's still ugly to look at with the panda black trims around the tires. The paint color are so ugly... it's vomit time. Check the suspensions also because Toyota is notorious to have a very stiff comfort you will feel all the bumps for sure(this will punish you on longer trips). Test it!!! 2 or 3 times on rough roads This car is garbage to me because it fails to give me absolute freedom. Then it is priced so high that the fuel economy won't be noticeable compared to a beater car with a 1 side insurance. So you are still better of with any old beater car. ALSO: It's not "an electric world" : United States' energy consumption :37%petroleum, 32%natural gas, 11%coal, 8%nukes...and 11% renewable: "renewable only for only the 1%"...
