- The BZ4X is Toyota's first large scale attempt at an EV. What they made is a pretty good car that does the one thing it needed to do real well very poorly.

I’m about to lease one at 0% with a $17k rebate from Toyota and a $7k rebate from the government. The range is plenty for me and no more paying for gas. It’s comfortable and unique, couldn’t be happier with my decision.
Update: I’ve had it for about a week now. It’s been awesome! I’ve actually gotten several compliments from strangers, too. I got a fully loaded limited. There’s a charger across from my workplace and I only charge once per week. It’s comfortable, quiet, has every feature I’d ever need, spacious interior, etc. honestly not sure where all the hate is coming from. Obviously if you plan on road tripping, this isn’t the car for you, but for the average joe just commuting to work and going shopping with it, it’s fantastic. Bonus if you’ve already got a level 2 charger at home. The rebates are just the icing on the cake. If you’re on the fence, I’d say at least go take a look! You can get these things for a stupid good deal right now.
Did you find one? The dealer I went to yesterday said they were all sold out in the whole area.
I work at a Toyota dealer in Georgia. We had 3. I just got mine, hopefully these other 2 will fly off the lot.
Holly cow, how do you get so many rebates?
For $129 per month and 0 down for a lease its great but ONLY if you don’t do roadtrips or commute for longer than 100 miles
I saw the $17k lease cash, but where is the$7k rebate from? Looking to do the same
I'm driving this suv right now, and it's totally awesome. I use reading glasses and I find the information on the dashboard to be a little bit tiny for my eyesight but other than that it's amazing the trunk space allowed me to move a huge piece of furniture 66 inch length without any problem. Awesome, great love it 😍
I still want this car. I have a Rav4 which I love. However, I don’t love the fuel consumption. I mainly do school runs in traffic and have solar panels so this will work fine for me. I also live in a hot climate where it never goes below zero degrees celcius.
I own the bZ4X FWD, I don‘t know what everyone is complaining about everywhere. I average around 17kwh per 100 km and get around 450 km out of a full battery, also driving on highways. For me this is efficient enough and I really love this car
It has been reported that colder regions, such as Norway where 80% of new car sales in 2021 are EVs, may experience significant reductions in battery performance and charging speed.
I also got a FWD on the way, happy to hear good things from an owner with all the negativity lol
@@XMG3 yeah, somehow everyone says negative stuff about the car. But they all just review the AWD version, not the FWD version, which is more than enough for most people.
@@philippengelhardt5587 absolutely, and I trust toyota's conservative approach for maximum reliability
@@XMG3 same for me, also a quick update, after 2 months I managed to get my average consumption down to 15.0kW/100km, so by now I‘d say the consumption is very good
I bought a 2023 Rav4 Prime Se back in July. I love the way it drives. The heavy battery gives it a much lower CG than previous iterations of the Rav4. Very stable, very little body lean in corners, and it's very quiet and easy to control both the speed and the steering. I wonder how the BZ4X would feel in comparison? If Toyota can actually make good on it's hopes for a 900-mile range solid state battery in the next few years, I'd be very willing to try a BZ4X or similar Toyota crossover with that much range.
As a European who has a BZ4X AWD Premium Bussiness I enjoy the car it's a blast to drive, it reacts well to a lot of situations and the mileage is for Europe really good. The number 2 charging is pretty okay also manage to always get the max out of the car it's a very comfortable drive with a kick and yes you can get this out of a lot of EV's, I just generally like the BZ4X spacey look and feel, They fixed a lot of flaws and Toyota always has great service.
Completely agree. I have the Solterra equivalent to your Toyota and live in Norway from where much of the early critiscms were aired. The build quality of both badges is excellent. Superior to Tesla (for example lights filling with rain water, badly aligned panels.) which is arguably the most technically advanced EV.
Great review
Thank you so much for your video , you made my decision easier for me
If you expected it to be a sporty ride, you bought and tested the wrong ride for the wrong reasons. I compared it against a 2.5L sport that I own, I generally cannot tell the difference between the two aside from appearances. I wasn't allowed to have it for a week though. Charging stations are notorious for unreliable performance.
It's an awesome EV if you want some off-road capability. Massive ground clearance, excellent traction control system, good build quality. Some people want what this offers.
Exactly, I own the Solterra and drive under Norwegian conditions. Satifies my requirements - love this car.
nice car review thank for videos
I learned all these things the hard way: by buying one on leap of faith. Man, was I wrong! There's some other issues with the suspension system too, which are not immediately apparent, but if you run into a curb, this thing is gonna get messed up badly. I mean, come on. I owned a Prius for many years; hopped curbs more than I can remember, and it never budges. With the bz4x, it happens once, on low speed hitting fairly low curb that is actually slanted outwards, and it knocked the steering column off center. They had to re-alight three wheels, for only one of them touching the curb. I mean seriously. The charging issue is real. It pulls much lower power than any car I happen to park next, and the two times a day ruined my first long trip, and made me hate this freaking car. I am a real owner, and I can prove it. My tag number is 1st-BZ4X, which tells you how idiot I was.
That sounds like an awful experience. Just curious, how slow was the curb collision?
@@ShiftingLanes I reported it to Toyota. I actually think that the lane assist took over and veered the vehicle off the road. See, it was dusk, when the lights conditions are at it's worst, so something freaked the vehicle causing it to swerve. I was going around a wide circle, so very attentive to the road. If it was me, I'm sure I would have happily hopped the curb and go back to the road, instead of sliding off the curb. Toyota inspectors concluded that I was driving at 27 mph, and the lane assist was not engaged, which is a lie, because I made it default. However.. 27 mph messes up your alignment?
Wow.. that's messed up. I'm buying a tesla.
learn to drive rather crashing over the curb!
@@kubibear2890 so you know how it happened? But that is beside the point. Suppose I am a bad driver and crashed to a curb, should the car be messed up like that? I’m talking about the car, not me.
Could by any chance a buyer from MENA region have an update of the car to run car play on it as well having the screen all English?
How in the world could you criticize having a structural beam across the moon roof view? Oh darn, Bob is dead from a roll over when the roof folded in, but the view we had out the moon roof without the cross beam was to die for.😊
Get the software update from Toyota, makes a big difference as tested by Bjorg Nyland.
Actually, today, at least in Europe, the car is a pleasure. Lots have changed.
First: In Europe, even the AWD model has Panasonic cells and quite good charging speed.
Second: The worst bugs, that almost had me canceling my order, have been sorted out. With latest software update, we got fast charging 3.8 times from 10% to 80% before it throttles.
The only thing I miss is wireless Android Auto. It works with Apple, but Android needs, at the time of writing, a cable. I hope the next software update adresses that problem.
I have tested it and its a very good car on snow and ice and bz4x was better than all other evs in testing on crawling and braking ln steap hills in winter conditions, but they need an upgrade on things like charging and range. And its coming an upgrade on downsides like charging and range within a couple of mounths.
Read this… Previewing this for my daughter, who lives in California
And I’m going to send her this review from you… And tell her,
‘It’d be good in North Dakota! And your name turns out to be Arne! Oh, my!
Will it be a software update or do you have to wait for the new model to get those upgrades?
Volume control is also located on the steering wheel
Will Toyota up the mileage range on the bz4x in the future? Also will toyota make a deal with Tesla allowing fast charging at their stations? Could make a big difference
just got one today.. Salesperson said starting January Tesla will add the CCS COMBO charger to their stations so it will allow other EV's to use their stations. that is here in California.
Wow you brought up a lot of points that other reviewers did not.
I appreciate the good with the bad that you reviewed.
I will cross this one off my list.
Indeed this review has helped a-lot…especially given the 17,500 rebate that was also offered to me.
Volume control on steering wheel too-toggle button on left side
The bz4x/Solterra is way out in left field when it comes to dc fast charging and driving range. I originally reserved the Solterra. I had to cancel due to the embarrassing recall on the front wheels could fall off when rapid braking and sharp turns. Sorry to say Toyota and Subaru entered the EV market quite late. If the vehicles had a range of 300 miles and rapid charge time of less than 30 minutes, I would’ve considered it in a heartbeat. I make trips between New York and Baltimore often. This will take me forever to go to New York and back to Baltimore. This vehicle is considered the SLOW BOAT TO CHINA EV !!! I did buy the Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD with an EPA rating of 266 miles. I got over 325 miles of range. This is my second trip with the Ioniq 5 from Baltimore to New York. In fact I made it to New York with over 96 miles of range remaining or 31%. It took me about 28 minutes to rapid charge to 90% at 150 kWh at a Electrify America charging station.
Toyota is committed to hybrids, they rightfully didn’t jump into an immature EV infrastructure financially and otherwise. Ask Ford how that’s going.
Agreed we purchased an New Ionic 5 awd and fully charged it last night and 325 is the range and real world hasn’t been far off from that. Sad so many people just think oh it’s a Toyota it’s good. But, is it? I don’t think so.
I just went to a Toyota dealer hoping to test drive a rav4 and highlander for my mom and they had none. But they had over a half dozen bz4x's. We've considered electric (ioniq is high on the list) but I didn't know much about the bz4x. Now I know why they have so many 😂 Love my hybrid camry, but it seems like toyota is not ready for a full EV.
I own a BZ4x I bought at the end of July - Limited AWD. While I do agree that the DC charging isn't what it should be and there's an initial adjustment to the steering wheel in the North America models, I otherwise find the car is a pleasure to drive and own. More importantly, the range I've gotten to date has been 260 - 270 mi. The car "learns" how you drive. I live near Seattle and took the car up to the mountains in August - about 100 mi. from home and averaged 65 mph with AC on for 80 - 90% of the trip and the range was spot on and continues to be. One advantage the BZ has over some other EVs such as Ioniqs and even Teslas is ground clearance. It's about six inches shorter than a RAV4 but is still much more elevated than some EVs. As the reviewer said, this car is for the common folk. Does its job and costs less than the $52K MSRP cited in the video.
Thank you for nice explanation about this car this ev took more than two hours to full charge this the worse part of this before buy think about two times more??
I have a level 2 charger in my garage. Range really doesn't mean that much to me. I'm not driving more than 100km in any given day, at most 200km to Whistler or Harrison Hot Springs where I can charge when I park. I currently have an audi etron which has poor range compared to others and it has NEVER been an issue.
Is it a must to fully charge it before driving? Can I charge it half way full then hit the road with with?
Yes, you certainly can . I’ve had mine for 9 months
They should update the review, after the update.
I don't go long distances. I'd happily trade my Rav4 Prime (under 8k miles) for a Toyota BZ4x. Any takers near Boston?
dat yoke, man.. it rocks!
there are volume buttons directly on the screen..
Thanks for the review. I drove the BZ4X last weekend (March 2024). I simply raised the electrically adjustable seat height to see the speed. I am 165cm (about 5'5"). It was very comfortable for my height.
I live in an area that gets snow - collecting my awd on Thursday
Hello i live in the snowy area too so how is your experience
I don’t understand why nobody is doing range and charging tests on the FWD model with the better battery?
It has faster charging and more range for a little less money. Seems like a better buy.
Every TH-camr keeps testing only the AWD model and complaining about the charging.
I can’t find one single range and charging test of the front wheel drive model.
this is exactly my findings, in vancouver BC here, we get $9000 rebate for this car, and when I compared the base model to all others like EV6, IONIQs, ID4, its thousands cheaper, the base BZ4X is the absolute best value EV for me, but I understand its highly region based
All reviewer were provided with the limited edition, so they can do better review. I doubt the FWD will give you a whole lot of range. The car is 5000 Ib, so the additional motor is not a significant weight addition.
@@AlaaGhazala It’s well known the FWD model has more range. It’s not just about weight.
It’s has smaller wheels and a different battery making it more efficient.
It semes to be a nice car i prefer front weel drive becouse the larger distanse.
If this was about $10-$12k cheaper I would probably buy it but not for over $50k. I figure there will be a few pre-owneds on the market in a year or so. I think people buy EVs without understanding EVs and then turn them back in. With that bring said, I would probably do a RAV4 Prime over this (if I could find one). I do like they fact that they kept physical buttons as opposed to everything going through a tablet but why get rid of the glove box?
It's brother the Subaru Solterra is under $50K
You dont want preowned electeic vehicle. Trust me. Unless batteries are dirt cheap. You will pay more to change the battery.
If you can get your hands on a Rav4 Prime, I think you will love it. I got one back in July, and it's the best car I've ever owned. Not a lot of towing capacity, but if it had more of that, it would have less EV range and worse fuel economy. The ONLY thing I wish my Rav4 Prime had, is more comfortable seats. The front seats are kind of small, and I know Toyota could have done better: I've sat in Camrys and Highlanders, and they have more cmnfortable seats. But if you need the carrying capacity and AWD capabilities of a small SUV, you can't do better than the Rav4 Prime.
I can buy one for 27K now. 4000 miles on it. I only need it to commute to work 80 miles round trip. Should I buy it? I have a prius with 310K miles on it. I'm ready for a change.
@pawnee68 I own the XLE Limited AWD and made a Pros and Cons list to try and decide if I want to keep it (see my list below). I will say if you do get the FWD if you do not need AWD as it gets better range and seems the Panasonic branded battery is better).
PROS:
Perforated seats / ventilated front seats
Very comfortable front/rear seats
Heated rear seats
USB C ports
Buttery soft leather steering wheel
Heated steering wheel
Adaptive cruise control
Panoramic roof “shade”
Solid rear view mirror (not flimsy)
Blind spot mirror sensors
Auto sensing windshield wipers
360 camera
Gear shifter
All windows auto up/down
Rear windows go all the way down
All doors have grab handles (driver)
Generous cup holder space in all doors
Rear seat tilt
Rear seat arm rest cup holders & phone slot
Quite a few tactical buttons/controls
Automatic tailgate
Rear cargo cover
Auto high beams can easily turn off
Very generous leg room in backseat
Also good head room in backseat
Footwell lighting
Side mirror ground light projection
Exterior Door handle lighting
Pass-thru front storage
CONS (not options all trims or don’t like):
Manual front passenger seat
No frunk
No sunglasses storage
No glove compartment
Too much piano black
Large plastic moldings behind steering wheel
Range low end and dropping
Slower charge times
Cheap feeling/looking key fob
Glitchy app
Toyota staff not knowledgeable about EVs
No fog lights
Not full one pedal driving
Car depreciation higher than expected
those frunks just makes maintenance harder, I hardly even use it for anything.
To me what counts is range and charging times features and looks are secondary.
FWD is good enough. Avoid AWD has it does affect the range & also doesn’t pack a punch of performance.
I want one so bad ,,, not at 8 hrs to charge
The slow charging is a deal breker.
The front piece doesn't seem to fit. Also, that range will decrease. Don't rely on it being the same in three years.
Luckily I'm looking for a new car for my brother in Hawaii. He might be the only person that this car is for. Doesn't get cold, not far to drive, can charge at home. They need to realize this and sell it as an islander car.
The charging scenario they described is not realistic. Why would you drive to 10% and then charge? It's not like getting gas, you do a couple of optimized quicker charging sessions on the way, there are apps to optimize this, if not in the car itself. And anyway, most people will charge at home and won't need to charge on the road every time they leave the house.
If you live in an urban area, you don't need the AWD, so you should get the FWD that comes with more range and a faster charging battery, and drive with snow tires if you need to...
From Australia: saying "Bee-Zee 4X" instead of "Bee-Zed 4X"... lol
if people want to buy this car go for the FWD for more range. you dont necessarily need the other techy stuff if you go awd
I own the limited and love it...best car in the snow and rough weather
Best car in snow is 4runner limited. 😂
@@brucey5585 slides left and right
The range/charging is a shoe stopper.
This is the first and last video I'm going to watch on this car. Not interested. The back end reminds me of my Prius. I've had it for 16 years and I'm ready for a more normal looking car. And the display looks too funky. I've had enough of funky. Don't need a steering wheel in the way of my speedometer view. What designer missed that? No volume knob? Just another thing to eat at me. And forget about trying to find a plug while on the road. Not going to deal with a slow charge like that. My car search continues. Thanks for the video!
Guys DO NOT get the all wheel drive version. This thing charges SOOO SLOW. Specifically the 2023 all wheel drive one but I think the 2024 all wheel drive one chargers fast.
Awesome truck
I've had the same charging issues with the solterra. I can't stand it.
I have a Solterra (bought in January 2023) and live in Norway. Although the car does get negative press (not least in Norway), I am very satisfied with the car.
No glove box......where am i going to put my gloves ???😮
Charging tips: Drive until you have 10-20% battery left, it will charge faster to 80%, on fast charging stations, than trying to charge from 60%. From 80% you should charge only if you have the time or you ready need to. Otherwise, it can take a similar amount of time than from 20-80%. Charging an EV is not linear!!! Linear logic doesn’t apply here. You’re welcome, pass the message, it took me a while to understand how EV charging works. A car reviewer should now that before talking about EV charging, you are just passing ignorance to your viewers mate.
doesn't matter is toyota is a city car to get you around. for been a new design not that bad possible next design will get those charging time problems.
Or u could hacksaw the steering wheel into a DIY yoke 😅
$52 for this ???! Crazy expensive
Own it and I love it !
Toyota's _"compliance car mindset"_ is a complete disgrace. They are 10 - 15 years behind Tesla with dwindling margins on vehicles that are on their way out.
All I care about is mileage per charge
They lost 90 % percent of people motivation by blocking tachometer with the steering. It is just a bad design and I have a bad feeling about all is not going well since the first start.
Road trip recommendation for any EV is to charge no higher than 60-65%, since charging-curve for any lithium battery slows significantly by that point (hence the extremely long time estimated). As for the supposed inability to charge below 32°F degrees, that is a misprint. Corrected materials list that limitation at -4°F, where you must first wait for the battery-warmer to heat the pack before charging will begin.
Very primitive to have to wait for a battery warmer. Better EV designs such as Tesla automatically preheat the battery using waste heat from the drive motors and the heat pump SO that the car is ready to charge upon arrival to a Super Charger. I realize that this is Toyota's first full-blown effort at EVs and hopefully the thermal design of their future car's cooling and heating systems will improve to where the consumer doesn't have to pay attention to the temperature: heat over 100 degrees or cold below zero. Consumer Reports, Savagegeese (a TH-cam channel), The Car Care Nut (TH-cam channel)... to name a few have been quite critical of the very poor charging speed (not necessarily to full) and of the overly expensive price for what you get. If I personally considered getting the bZ4x, my use case would be just to have it as a getting around town car or for a work commute where only Level 2 charging is needed. But for any road trips fast charging for a cross country trip during winter would be a nightmare... I would have to have a Tesla as a main car in the garage.
@ronkemperful Owners don't have to pay attention to "heat over 100 degrees". There is nothing anyone has sighted where Toyota's liquid-cooling doesn't address high temperatures. As for not using waste heat better in extreme cold, that is a reasonable generational type improvement to expect. Keep in mind, initial focus was on longevity.
The only other SUV EV is the ID4, Tesla is not an SUV. I have a XLE 4WD BZ and have never needed to charge away from home living on Vancouver island. I have a Rav4 Prime we use for Comox trips and simply satisfied with the BZ. Yes there are other issues, no rear wiper, somewhat issues with MFD but they are really not serious. Buy a Tesla and see what the resale is after 4 years, my experience with Toyota has been great with 5 vehicles, it’s important to me to get a good resale value. And most important that for my business I have a proper SUV.
BZ4 has good resale value?
Wow...now that I have seen more of it I would say that never would I bother with this vehicle. Very happy with our Hyundai Ioniq5 AWD Ultimate trim...we were Toyota owners for years and still have a Rav4 which we love but I think Toyota is making just a half hearted effort on BEV's...too bad.
The charge rate is a joke and the fact you cannot really charge on a DCFC at a higher speed more than 2 times in a 24 hour period...crazy.
Mike
That score makes no sense. You literally had zero cons other than they can't charge and the coldest conditions what like daytime?
some issues with this car:
1. for same price or less you can get telsa modely Y which is much better has better range
2. warranty terms on toyota just sucks!!!
disappointed in Canada.
Same in Arkansas.
I love the power and the way it drives/ride especially going up mountains. From 39% it took 1 hr 11 minutes at a public DC charging station to reach 100%. I didn’t take any chances and bought the home ChargePoint charging station. It does not take long to charge. It costs me $6 a month to charge my vehicle at home.
Yeah until it doesnt.
$6 a month? Unless you only drive 200 miles a month. National avg of electricity is .16 plus the tank is 70 kwh. $11.20 for a full tank. You drive less than a tank a month. You should just get a bike. Save on insurance and vehicle price.
It has no glove box. You cant lock anything in the car
3:54 Unbelievable. How dumb do you have to be to make a car without a volume knob? My wife has a 2018 Prius Prime and we hate the lack of a volume knob. Can’t believe they still haven’t learned their lesson on that front!
The volume control is on the steering, right next to your left thumb if your hands at 8-4. That keeps your eyes on the road. I don't miss the dial.
@@xenrin Ah, I just looked up images of the interior. Is it that little paddle that flips up and down? If so, that’s a lot better than only having up and down buttons on the dash, but it’s still worse than a dial because a passenger would be forced to use the dash up/down buttons if they wanted to control the volume. But yes, it’s smart that they added the paddle on the wheel. Thanks for letting me know!
This video is clownish. He keeps talking about the time to 100%. You should never charge your EV to 100% at a DC fast charger. Every car is going to take forever for a full charge. What is the 10% to 80% time? That's the relevant metric
personal opinion but to me, this looks like just another ugly toyota. giving me cybertruck vibes. nothing to get excited about and too expensive.
A modern EV at that price point has no right not being a road trip car. Paying that much and not ever being able to go on long trips is an absolute deal breaker.
No glove box and no rear wiper . How dumb can Toyota designer be to make a car user friendly and alnost perfect .
This EV will be known as the vehicle that forced Toyota CEO to step down. What a fail Toyota.... I waited and waited and this half @ss EV is all we got.
0:51 is he high? the first EV from toyota? you mean the Prius? lol
prius is hybrid, not EV
Charging time is "downright bad". Worse in winter.
Car feels really capable? This guy must have test driven before the wheels fell off & Toyota suspended sales. Wheels fell off; not just one of them, either. That's not "capable"; doesn't inspire "confidence".
Hey, it's designed to tell you ya shoulda bought a Prius. But what it actually tells you is you shoulda bought a Tesla.
I owner don’t buy . To much money for this car .
This is a toy car. I am very sad to buy this car because its only problem is charging. First of all it takes long time to charge if 50% charged with level 3 or DC charging it will take 2 hours 30 minutes. Then you have to keep the car at full stop which you have to suffer in extreme cold, heat. After that if you start the car and turn on the heat and AC then you can run the car for one hundred miles. So don't waste your time and money buying this car. Thank you😅😅😂
This is one of the worst EVs around compared to the competition. If you don’t believe me look at the sales numbers. Only Toyota lovers or EV newbies will buy this car.
People who are familiar with electric cars will know this is mediocre and avoid it. Loyal Toyota shoppers who want an EV might buy it but they’ll eventually feel burned. I don’t think Toyota is doing itself any favors here. Bad specs and ugly inside and out. I’ll be interesting to see what Toyota makes when it gets serious and whether or not they can catch up.
toyota have perfected ICE , but EV - will stay away
Just get an Ioniq or EV6
Exactly why I just bought an Ioniq 5 😅
But for the same price range you can get ID 4

@@davidnicholson6901 because is not Toyota
@@Padesha456 The Solterra and Toyota AWD are essentially the same. Subaru and Toyota in partnership developed the vehicles. They are assembled together in Toyota` s factory. In the main, it is the badges and a few superficial design elements (front and back) that differentiate.
Just get a less expensive Model Y.
Whenever i see the bz4x 🤢
Didto try it if that car could reach 900 miles in one charge? There was a test it’s only 300 plus miles
Price too high.
You need to put price down.
