As an Aussie, I appreciate that these people can have a laugh about themselves. That's what it was like when I was a kid. Having a laugh about our differences. Unfortunately people now see it as racist rather than actually appreciating our differences .. there was a saying when i was growing up... if people aren't making fun of you, then they don't like you. My ethnic mates used to call us skips, after Skippy the kangaroo, a character in a tv show. It was all good, as long as you weren't actually trying to hurt their feelings. It's all about context and intentions to me.
As an a Aussie, I can say some of this still exists.

All his references aren’t made out of ignorance (a key factor in racism) and he’ll stop to clarify mid-show, so both he and the audience learn something new.
