    I forgot to mention this. For the side by side comparison tests I used the RF 15-35 on the R7 and the RF 24-70 on the R5. Both were shot in 4K Fine 24 fps Clog 3. I used the zooms to match the field of view. I also adjusted the aperture a bit higher on the R5 to get the depth of field to match as best as I could. The autofocus test was done using the same lens setup but both cameras were set to F2.8 to make the autofocus work as much as possible.

      Hi Josh! I just bought my R7 to be my main camera and the RP will be my B camera. In the RP I have been using Technicolor Cinestyle as an alternative to C-LOG3, what do you think of this combo for video? What advice do you give me to achieve image uniformity? (Have you compared them?) Right now it's what I have for video production. Let's wait for Canon to release a new R MarkII

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SaulCastillo I have never used the RP so I can't offer you any advice on how the images will look. Best thing I would recommend is practice as much as possible before taking the cameras out on a professional shoot. Experiment a bunch and see how close you can get them to match.

    Regarding the troublesome mini HDMI port; l shoot video for 2-6 hrs per on my Canon M50 and Sony A6400 cameras. I went through 3 mini HDMI cables each, all broke off. The Mini HDMI cables will break on the end, just too weak.
    I finally solved the problem, shot with both cameras now for 1 yr straight not 1 broken HDMI cable. I had to put a rig cage on each camera. Once l had that l got a UURig R068 Camera HDMI Cable Clamp. Now l plug in the mini HDMI to the port and simply tighten the UU Rig clamp and the HDMI is rock solid, won't move or damage it even if you directly hit the HDMI cable directly where it plugs into the camera.
    For me being forced to purchase a rig cage ended up being my favorite improvement to my set up. I shoot surf videos (Bali Surf Hunters TH-cam channel)
    with telephoto lens in the 400mm to 600mm range and since l got the rig cage have also added an external monitor, external mic, and recently, external V mount battery set up. It all depends on if you hand hold or shoot video on a tripod. If hand held, go for camera rig cage and UU rig clamp only. If shooting video on longer shoots with a tripod, go with the external monitor and external batteries, both are fantastic upgrades.

    I just had the chance to try out the R7 on field today. Manage to shoot eagles from a boat in the sea. It turns out very good. The AF was so fast to lock on the subject and track well. Manage to get at least 70% keeper. Mind this is the first time i use the R7. It was pair with RF 100-500 L. Consider the sway movement of the boat and fast action of the birds dive to catch the meal. I consider this camera was way above my expectation for a sub 2k camera.

    Josh, keep in mind many of the R7 buyers are current 7D, 7D mk 2, D80, D90 owners and likely already have numerous EF lens suited to crop sensor cameras so the current limitations of Canon crop sensor lens that are RF mount might not be as big a factor as you think.
    I believe you are coming at this from the perspective of a guy that owns higher end gear (Canon C70, R5 and expensive full frame class). The main reason owners got a Canon 7D or D90 is bang for the buck, likewise why getting the R7. With limitations in budget my bet is most of these camera owners in this demographic will not sell their old glass and replace it with RF lens when the Canon mount converter works fine.
    Example, I own a Canon 400mm f5.6 and Canon 70-200mm lens with a 1.4x teleconverter. There's no way l can afford to buy a new R7 and just sale those old lens with the old mount and buy a $2800 RF mount 100-500 lens.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For sure! The market for the R7 includes A LOT of different people. I made that comment because I'd like to see Canon commit a bit more to their crop sensor RF line in the future by putting out more crop RF lenses. That would also benefit C70 users too. It's easy enough to put the $100 EF-RF adapter on the R7 and use all of your EF and EF-S lenses. Thanks for watching!

    i am planning to buy a new camera to replace my old 70D and i have been watching alot of comparison video about R6, R7, R10, sony A7IV etc. Buy i guess i am going to buy R7 after watching many of your video. The auto-focus seems the best now even comparing to R5, the 4K 60p Clog3 which i needed , and actually the higher pixel even its APS-C. with watching your video about the speedbooster 0.71x, i guess this would be the last puzzle for me to fix the issue about the FF matter.
    I came up with the conclusion to buy R7 with 0.71x speedbooster would be the best option to me.

    Really nice comparison. Just got my R7 as a B-Cam for my R5 two weeks back, pretty happy so far.
    Depending on your use case, one big difference is how they handle external recording. The R7 (like the R6) cannot record internally and externally at the same time... which is a real shame. On my R5 I often times record 8k Raw internally which is output to my Atomos Ninja V as 4k Fine (with HDMI Raw disabled). So I got a nice, easy to handle ProRes Proxy to work with. Also something to consider if you need redundancy, which is not easily possible with external recorders on the R7.

    • @ntsan

      I found out the hard way about that when doing a livestreaming.. that R6 doesn't do internal record + hdmi out at same time, so I have to get my R5 to replace the R6.

    The limited lens options really hurt this system. I have an R7 with 18-150mm, a 10-18mm efs, and 24-105 ef. When using the ef glass and adapters people need to be mindful the stabilization benefits are not even close to what you get with rf lenses. That's to be expected but it is very different for video. Also I can't get past the way better lens options I have for my Sony a6600. I still use it for all my wedding videos. It has way lesser IBIS quality, lesser video codecs, but it still functions better for event shooting due to way better lens options. I barely use my r7 at weddings. I do like the image though

    • @asahai2

    I really want to love this camera. I can live with the lack of 4K 60 fine mode. But for me they basically killed it by turning off the LED screen when outputting HDMI. It just severely limits it’s utility.

    • @brettsherman7810
      @brettsherman7810 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bevan Ward Normally I do not output to an out board monitor. I find it heavy, not really in terms of weight (though it makes the gimbal feel less balanced to hold), but extra gear and batteries and stuff that makes me less nimble. I tried using an Ninja on my latest shoot in rural Guatemala in rugged terrain . I found it so annoying after the first day that I stopped using it. Even though trying to look at the F-log In daylight is nigh impossible. I still found myself looking at the XT-3 screen because that’s where I could control focus. Secondly you can’t control autofocus with it, so you’d be forced to click on the blank screen for where you want to focus. Thirdly if you are streaming you can’t send any information to the HDMI output, so you’re shooting without the full information. It’s just not a limitation I want to live with. Especially when there are other cameras like the Fuji XH2-S that don’t have such an Ill-conceived limitation. It’s also possible I may go with the R5 instead to not have to deal with a second lens system with my C70. So congrats Canon I guess - forcing me to potentially give them more money.

      @Bevan Ward The Átomos Zato Connect makes it more workable if it ever gets out of the beta stage. At the least I wouldn’t have to a monitor AND and encoder both connected to the camera.

    i currently have had a Canon 80D for a long time and have been depsertley researching for months on different full frame cameras for both high quality photography along with stunningly crisp Video for a number of scenarios. I have been buying alot of Sigma Lenses that are EF mount which sucks because the cameras that are obviously better are ones like the Sony A7siii, Sony A7R V, Canon R5 (What I am most leaning towards) which all have different mounts that I would buy adapters to fit my current lenses. I have been debating for so long but deserve an upgrade in quality from what I currently use. Any recomendations on any cameras I did not mention or any I did mention! Do you think the R5 would be perfect for me? I would really appreciate any suggestions from people who have used many different cameras and would like to help me buy the perfect one!

    The R5 was easily identifiable as having better IQ even with youtube compression, but I agree that they're close enough "for most people." Now I hate it when people say that ("for most people"), because for anybody who wants the best IQ -- whether you need it or not -- you know who you are, and you (hopefully) know it's a classic case of diminishing returns to chase that last 5-10% percent. Of course, the elephant in the room is these are hybrid cameras, so many buyers want stills too, and R5 gives you your money's worth over the R7.

      The R7 has an APSC sensor (1.6x crop from full frame). The R5 has a full frame sensor. For the examples shown I shot both the R5 and R7 in 4K fine and used a zoom lens on both to get them to match as closely as possible.

    • @lindenv
      @lindenv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not necessarily. More powerful computer? I’d say almost definitely. But you don’t need an 8K monitor to make heavy use of 8K footage. I edit all of my 4K footage on a 1440p monitor and it does a great job, for similar reasons why 8K downsampled to 4K looks so much better than 4K. Even beyond that, the greater advantage of high res footage is “cropability”. With ultra high res footage, you can maintain a high-fidelity image after digitally cropping.
