      I'm looking to get another body - currently have the 90D - and have been considering the R5 - until this R7 came about.... in your Iso test, did you use the same lens for each camera? it also appeared to my eye the 90D had less focus than the R7 - maybe it was just me - Thanks for the Video

      @@missourilandpro6482 I have just switched from 90D to R7 and did some intense testing this weekend. If you have R7 available in nearby stores and can sell your 90D at reasonable price, don't hesitate. It's worth it just for the AF alone, but R7 seems to be a real bargain for that price. My only complain so far is the battery charge status display which seems to be inaccurate and my camera went from ~50% charge to dead in just a few minutes. Other than that, I'm super happy with this purchase.

    This is a good video. Real world ISO is what some of us were looking for. Lab videos make sense when you have literally hundreds of cameras to test over decades, everything will be compared equally. You can't really go to the same log in the woods and get the exact same lighting over the span of 20 years. Anyway, thanks for spending the time. Noise is noise, and sometimes I leave it as is because I like the pattern it adds to a photo, and other times you don't. But - I think it's fair to say the R7 is fine. I rarely shoot over 3200, I'm out in the sun and when I'm in the shadows I'm hunting for slivers of light or I just don't shoot. That's just me tho.

  • @duncangroenewald
    @duncangroenewald 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You should really use some real fine feathers in the test next time. A smooth painted subject with no fine detail is not representative of any wildlife I have come across and easy for denoise software to work with. I find Topaz struggles with the R7 images with small birds with fine feather detail.

    Interesting. But I personally think that both DSLR’s missed focus. Also to make things look more even. I suggest downsampling both the 90D and R7 to the same megapixel size then comparing noise and detail. I’m pretty sure the R5 will stand out with better overall quality.

    Just regarding Adobe's processing of the raw files, they look noisier because you're not seeing the true raw file. It's had all this sharpening and contrast added to the file in the background, even though it's not showing you those adjustments on the sliders or the tone curve. These are whats bringing out the noise more. But if you know how to reverse all these hidden adjustments suddenly the files look as good as in Canon's own raw converter. Adobe have copped considerable flak for this, and rightly so, but its amazing how many pro photographers are not aware of it. When you revert to an older process version of lightroom or camera raw, you can now see the hidden adjustments and reverse them. Then with everything zeroed out you change back to the current process version and you now have the raw file. It's a bit geeky, but when I learned about this it completely changed my IQ in lightroom. Just my 2 cents worth for those who care about having full control of their images.

    • @GlennBartley
      @GlennBartley  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you saying you have 2 versions of Adobe loaded so that you can use the old conversion engine?

    • @markrigg6623

      @@GlennBartley The process version is in the camera calibration tab. You have to revert to process version 2. I'll send you a link later when I get time to find it that shows how to do a "process version swap", and the whole sequence then gets saved as a preset.

    Maybe it's just TH-cam but the 90D noise looked just like the R7 noise. We can kid ourselves as much as we like. The 90D sensor is older tech and the R7 just happens to be the same sensor (allegedly with some tweeks). To me, it barely looks any different. So in the UK, Canon want £1350 for a "wildlife" camera, that has poor weather sealing, an old sensor and a buffer that you hit in one second. As a Canon user for over 30 years, they have dropped the ball. It's a bang average camera that is not suited for wildlife. It looks like a rushed job and just like the 90D - can't match the 7d mk2.

    • @GlennBartley
      @GlennBartley  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I certainly agree I wish they had charged a bit more and made it more like the 7D2 and Canon 5DIV combo.
      But it is what it is. And each person will have to decide if this camera is right for them.
      Certainly an attractive price point for many users...

    • @doghouseriley4732
      @doghouseriley4732 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GlennBartley But it cannot achieve what it is meant to do. I really want someone to do a hands on test in the rain. People need to be a bit more honest. If someone owns a 7D Mk2 they are paying for a sensor that is barely better and great autofocus - the downside is that you can't go out in the rain or if it is dusty/sandy, you'll hit the buffer in one second and then have to wait at least 8 seconds for it to clear. Does that sound like a wildlife camera to you?
      Do you recall when Canon tried to convince everyone to switch from the 7D Mk2 to the 90D? It's the same con, just about. We've waited a long time for Canon to deliver the "mirrorless 7D" and they failed. The RF glass is astonomical and no 3rd party access to the mount.
      I shot with Canon for 30+ years during the AE1-P days, now she was a girlfriend. The 7D Mk2 was the wife who delivered the goods. The R7 is the one who makes sure the divorce happens in California. It's like Windows 8, the operating system no-one wanted.

      Canon did it again. 4 years a go they told us to sell our 7D Mk2 and buy the 90D. Even though it didn't have good weather sealing and offered no advantages for stills. Now the send us another chocolate teapot. This tyime it has no weather sealing, a tiny buffer, no CFcard slot, an old sensor and limted and expensive lens choice with no third party options. Sad to say, they have just done it again.
      Just as a point of fact. The last 8 years (since the launch of the 7D Mk2) has been the lowest level of inflation in history not " massive inflation".

      @@doghouseriley4732 Canon's website claims weatherproofing for the R7, and it's buffer with a fast card is 51 RAW images, 20 more than the advertised buffer on the 7dii. I bought a 7dii when it was first released and sold it a couple weeks ago. Don't recall hitting the buffer more than once or twice in extensive use shooting wildlife. There's no CF slot in the $2500.00 R6. CF Express cards are outrageously expensive. Not sure it would be a good business decision to put a slot for one in a $1500.00 camera.

    I just looked at 1/3200s f/8, 1/1600s f/8 and 1/800s f/8 studio raw files of the R7 from imaging resource and the noise performance is significantly worse than the M6 II, more comparable to the M50. It's even slightly worse than the M50. For the price, this is extremely disappointing, when you consider that the noise performance of an M6 II is already worse than a Nikon Z50 and you don't even get the M6 II noise performance. I would have expected to get the noise performance from the M6 II, not from the M50.
    Note that Canon seems to have redefined the Iso values, when you look at imaging resource's studio files. Iso 25600 files of the M6 II and M50 have the same f-number and exposure time as Iso 51200 files of the R7. So Iso 51200 is actually 25600, Iso 32000 is actually Iso 16000, Iso 100 is actually Iso 50, unless imaging resource changed the light conditions of their lab (this would make the comparison useless)..

The raw noise performance of the 90D and R7 seems to be very similar. So the question is whether imaging resource's studio light conditions have changed over the years or whether the light conditions of the forest have changed. The time difference between your 90D and R7 images is 16 minutes, so the light conditions could have changed, but over the years, imaging resource's studio light conditions could have changed, too.

      Images with a bit of noise (not noisy, but a smidge) have a distinct "film" look to them. Whereas denoised images often look "plastic ". I know I too am in the minority, but I honestly think that we have almost reached the point of too much crispness, too much resolution. Some images begin to look unrealistic. Of course, I feel that way about 4k television too. It has a "phoney" look to it. Look around the room, then look at the 4k TV. Reality isn't that sharp.

    "Many of us have been waiting for a crop body mirrorless camera." But M series has been available for years. Especially M6ii that is a great camera, 32mpix and really good autofocus. As I have noticed in most of the camera influencers' videos, M series is totally forgotten or ignored. Looks like Canon is trying to bury it, or the influencers never really liked it, which is strange. Glenn, what is your opinion?

    Thank you Glenn, comparing the R7 to the 7d2, 90D and R5 is exactly the test many are waiting for, me included. I have the R5 and the 7d2 which has been my main bird and wildlife camera for years. The additional reach and especially the eye-AF are very big points in favor of the R7 the more as the high ISO noise even seems slightly better compared to the other cameras according to your test. However, the lack of a grip, extremely small buffer, noisy mechanical shutter vs serious rolling effect and wobbling background in consecutive shots in electronic shutter mode (at least from what I've seen in other tests) make it a tough decision for me. Some report a jumpy AF in busy backgounds, too. Moreover, I'm also not sure if the R7's ruggedness and weather sealing is sufficient for taking the camera to demanding enviroments such as the Arctic etc. I'm travelling to Tanzania in October where dust is said to be a big problem and I'm really struggling with the decision to take the R7 for more reach and excellent Eye-AF or better rely on my 7D2 and R5 in crop mode. As for noise, maybe Dxo Pureraw and Topaz Denoise could level the somewhat better noise characteristics of the R7 compared to the 7d2. So I'm still undecided to go for the R7. Anyway, I'm looking forward in your comprehensive test and comparison.
    BTW, I had already commented this 2 days ago here. But strange enough, my comment is "vanished" ;-) ;-)

    Thanks for providing the sample images. I will be shooting is very similar lighting conditions so these were very helpful. My R7 arrives tomorrow so it was nice to see what my new workflow will be like. I opened these files in Affinity Photo (AP), Topaz DeNoise, and also DPP4. As expected AP struggled since Apple doesn't have a raw image engine for this camera yet. Topaz DeNoise did fine, but the denoise affect was too strong at default setting, but I like to make any required exposure corrections prior to using Topaz. DPP4 left a little noise at default settings which I actually preferred. DPP4 had the best color and overall balance without me having to make any adjustments. In fact the 25600 R7 file looked fine right out of DPP4.
    For now it appears my workflow will be to use DPP4 and save the files as .tif and do my edits in AP. I know DPP4 has its limitations but right now it handles these files better than my other options.

    Hi, I’ve stumbled down the rabbit hole of wanting to replace/upgrade my camera. I currently have a (now discontinued) canon 200d which was perfect for my first ever camera. Mainly used for video and some photography. Now I’m really , really REALLY needing some advice … deciding whether to go for canon 90d, canon mark 5d iv, or canon R7 . The R7 looks attractive to me because of : the autofocus capabilities and the newer technology that come with mirrorless , I’m scared because of not knowing how to use it compared to my traditional camera , I’m embarrassed to say I have only ever used auto on my camera but I’m going to learn how to use manual. Also slightly worried about the ‘overheating’ rumours/problems with mirrorless, but apparently shouldn’t be an issue if I don’t intend to do shoot 30min + .. I’m interested in the canon mark iv because it seemed EVERYONE thinks it’s a beast and amazing but then after research I saw it’s better primarily for photography AND it doesn’t have a flip out screen (a feature I currently have and love) and then obviously the 90d …. I think is a really really good option as it’s a step up (several steps) to what I have and probably the most familiar one I’d be used to .. just scared of thinking the R7 is more superior I think is my problem… would really appreciate your thoughts.

    Too me, the R7 and 7DM II are frustratingly crippled for my use. I've used the Canon 7D MII, and its low light performance was poor even when introduced. Its competitor (to be fair, it came out later), the Nikon D500 was much better. The R7 has so much good, but has a frustrating flaw that would keep me away. The EVF has low resolution and not great magnification. No thanks, especially for a camera meant for fast action and wildlife. A small step up would make a big difference. Why not charge an extra $100 and give users something much better? So, among the crop sensor cameras, I would probably grudgingly get the 90d if I had to choose.

      The high ISO shots of the R7 are barely any better than the 90D, not surpising considering they use the same sensor. When the 90D failed to ship the units that Canon expected, they probably had a load of sensors left over. The 90D sensor was barely better than the 7D Mk2. That's one of the reasons that people did not switch from the 7D Mk2 to the 90D. Be very careful getting rid of your 7D Mk2, it is properly weather sealed, built like a tank, you can shoot for over 5 seconds without hitting the buffer (not 1 second) and is a proven camera.
      The R7 is a camera that was rushed out because Sony caught Canon cold uses old tech and is not properly weather sealed, like the 90D.

      I hear the release date for the new D7 Mk II is December 25th, because Santa Claus is listening. The R7 to crippled to buy? I guess it depends on what you use a camera for. If 32mp, 651 pt. As for this price point I don’t see any competition, heck Nikon users are begging for AF this good.

    Reading the comments here we all have the same problem. We love our 7dII's! The R7 has a great AF. But the rest is not so much better that we can part with our old love 7dII. My 7dII traveled around the world with me for 7 years and took top photos that also went around the world.

      Much better AF, 32 megapixels to 20, 15 fps to 10 mechanical, 30fps electronic to.....7dii doesn't have, pre-exposure of .05 second to no pre-exposure, better high iso noise handling, exposure preview, touch screen, lighter more compact for carrying around. RAW buffer of 51 to 31. 4k 60 to no 4k. Not enough of an upgrade? No brainer for me. I sold my 7dii and am anxiously awaiting the R7!

    My Canon 80D shutter died on me and I opted to spend the $500 more for the R7 over the 90D. I just got my camera today and I shoot a lot of hockey and sports so I am looking forward to the 651 AF points over my 45 with the 80D. I am shooting with the Sigma 18-55 1.8 and 70-200 2.8.
    I am thinking this is a good investment for my photo business. Taking it out tomorrow AM for a little test run.

  • @bird-af
    @bird-af ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Glenn! You talked about the importance of the ISO test in the field, not in the studio. I agree with you. But it is also very important to do this with a consumer lens for wildlife. For example, canon 100-400 mark II, Sigma 150-600. You're doing an ISO test with a professional lens for a few thousand dollars. Not everyone can afford such a lens. I'm sure the results will be different with these bodies and cheaper lenses at high ISO. I'm talking about the sharpness and enlightenment of the lens. It definitely won't answer their questions for many and many will get different results than yours. I think for people who came to the equipment (lens) for several thousand dollars, this video will not be watched. They know and can try it in the right place.

    Glenn, great review. Really useful. Next time when you do this kind of review, will you be able to use a furry animal or bird instead of a wooden one? In real world its the feathers or furs that needs cleaning and because of the variable textures and additional shadows, the noise details are slightly different compared to the wooden owl. :) Thanks!

    The big question is, can we get our hands on an R7 before the R7 ii comes out? The timespan between release date and actual availability on these new cameras is such lately that I almost feel like I should get a discount. After watching months of reviews before I get my camera I feel like I'm buying "last year's model", dated technology as it were.
