You have to remember there isn’t a small difference in price between the R10 and R7 but a big leap (R10 body is £899 and R7 body is £1449 in the UK)
And no camera will make a dull boring subject look amazing.
I own a R10 and it does everything I need. From my own experience of using a R10 I can’t think of anything I miss or would change.
I’d save the money for Canons ridiculously priced RF lenses and accessories.

Just a side note here (2 years later....) Michael the Maven (You Tube channel name) has a rather good reference chart for the lenses that will resolve the full mp count of the R7, M6, and 90D sensor. It is also listed in his Facebook group. He has personally tested some and crowd sourced some others, but he is very transparent about the results. I own the R7 and I agree with the majority of the findings from the results I get with the lenses I own. Of course a lot of the lenses are EF L lenses and need to be adapted, but the new RF lenses are starting to be listed

Mark, You mention looking for higher quality lenses that will perform well on the R7, with it's ultra high resolution sensor. I can't help with RF glass, but Canon put out a list of lenses they recommended for the 50MP 5DS and 5DS-R, back when they introduced those cameras. That might serve as a useful guide of what EF glass would adapt best on the R7.
It's a minor thing for many people, but you didn't mention that the R10 has a built-in, pop up flash (though it's pretty anemic). The R7 doesn't have a built-in flash (which may help with its weather resistance).
Overall, a very interesting comparison! I wasn't aware the R10 didn't close the shutter to protect the sensor when the lens is removed! Shame on Canon for that. That should be a standard feature on all mirrorless, IMO.
I noticed the size and weight of the R7 early on. In fact its footprint is so close to that of several of the full frame models, I was best disappointed Canon didn't make the R7 compatible with the BG-R10 battery grip they use. The capacity of the batteries may not concern you, but shooting sporting events I sometimes take 3000, 4000 or more shots in a day. And I want to do as few battery changes as possible. I also like the vertical grip itself and the secondary controls, shooting a lot in portrait orientation, and so use battery grips on all my DSLRs.
Anyway, thank you for the very thorough and well presented comparison Mark. I'm sure a lot of people will find it quite useful!

Thank you this was super helpful. I was thinking I needed the R7 for the IBIS and higher MP sensor but it seems like with an IS kit lens it’s not going to make significant difference. Also I have tiny hands so the R10 might work out better in that regard, plus it’s more travel sized and leaves a bit of budget left for an extra battery and the converter mount so I can use my old lenses.

Great informative, yet ‘down to earth’ style video. I've ordered an R10 with 18-150mm lens now instead of R7 as there is so little difference in most scenarios of my photography as confirmed by what you have demonstrated. Look forward to watching lots more of your videos to continue to learn and confirm ive made the right choice(s).
admit am little worried about using third party lenses via adapter but will read up on what other real users experience have used.

The one difference I did notice in high iso is that R7 does hold color information better than R10. R10 after 6400 starts getting a bit more magenta, especially in the blacks. And R7 still keeps more true to the tone.

Hi Mark, I've been using the Canon R10 and the stabilization is just horrific. I was recently shooting with the 24-105 RF lens, with stabilization turned on, digital IS OFF, and it has a very strange IS problem. The camera starts to TRACK the object in the image, instead of stabilizing against hand movement.
For example, I'm filming someone pressing a gas pedal, holding the camera very steady, and when the pedal is pressed and released, the image moves back and forth, along with the pedal. I'm not moving the camera, but the IS system tracks it, even though it's supposed to be optical IS. Have you encountered this? The only way to fix it, is to turn IS off completely, not even on the lens. Even my old Canon T7i with the cheap kit lens it came gave me better results. I'm surprised I'm not finding more videos about how useless this camera is when it comes to filming anything hand-held.

Thanks very much for the detailed review. I purchased the R7 for a specific reason because I invested heavily on the Canon glass (both EF & RF). The R7 give me a longer reach when using for wildlife. However, I likely wouldn’t buy the R7 if Canon announced the stoppage of 3rd party glass at the same time they unveiled the R7/R10. Also, I see it as a business decision Canon made and no others have the courage to make?

Mark, you've provided a very clear and thorough comparison!
I'm getting into macro photography, with flash. My Canon 7D Mark II has a fast drive mode of 10fps, but with the flash unit is too heavy, while my Canon T3 with flash is of lighter weight, but with meager fps. PLUS, I've back and hip pain to deal with when trying to deal with subjects (flowers/insects) low to the ground.
SO - I've been considering a lightweight, mirrorless camera, not only for the weight factor, but also because my cameras don't have articulating screens - and it's difficult to focus via "Live view" when one is not at the same level as the camera. So- I've been considering the R10, however you say that the screen is "blurry" and not well lit -so I'm concerned about it's use for macro - what would be your recommnendation - without a humongous pricetag?
It should be obvious all of my lenses have EF mounts, and my macro (Tokina ATX-i 100mm f2.8 FF) has an EF mount.

  • @bruck177

Great comparison video, thanks for sharing!
Another fair point about R7 IBIS vs R10 no IBIS (for photos); realistically there are only 2 RF lenses without IS that APS-C shooters would consider: RF 16mm f2.8 and RF 50mm f1.8.
All the other f1.8 / f2 primes have IS, and honestly who’s going to spend near $3k for an RF 1.2 prime on either of these cameras?
Similar concept for RF zooms… other than the heavyweight 28-70 f2, literally every other native zoom has IS right?
So basically if you can live without the 16m 2.8 and 50m 1.8, the R7’s IBIS has zero impact for pictures 🤯

i was scrolling thru the comments for exactly this information. but just to be doubly clear without all the photographer-jargon ... r7 IBIS/ image stabilisation has NO impact on birding/ wildlife photos so might as well save 500 bucks and go in for a r10??
please confirm soonest- buying one of these in this week :)

    • @bruck177
      @bruck177 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@rumbo2263 hey, I haven't used an R7 yet however I have read the R7 does indeed have a slight improvement in image sharpness due to camera shake vs the r10, even though the 100-400 lens does most of the heavy lifting regarding camera shake.
I'd guess it's maybe 0.5 to 1.0 stops improvement... Though tbh I'd really like to try it out in the real world as no one seems to have done that specifically!
The R7 also has 40% more pixels, meaning its image has to be sharper else camera shake blur will appear more easily.
Good luck with your decision. My vote would be with the R10 & put the funds toward a better lens... Maybe the EF 100-400?

You get too hung up what the IBIS can't do. What it does with EF lenses such as the 400mm f/5.6L USM is stabilising the viewfinder quite effectively - I need the short shutter speed for moving subjects anyways but the composition and focusing becomes easier with it...

Great channel. I have followed you for years. I consider you the expert on everything EOS-M. My question is: Is the R10 a good replacement for the M5? A short bit of background: my main camera is a 5D2, which I use for paid work (yes, I'm still not sold on EVFs), and my travel cameras are the M5 and G5X. I know I should get something in the EOS-R, but I'm reluctant. As for my M5, I have the beautiful 22mm, the Sigma trio, and the fantastic 11-22mm, along with actually all the official EOS-M lenses from Canon, and I can't really see any replacement for some of them on the EOS-R just yet. I also like that the Canon batteries I have for my M5 fit the R10. In reality, I do find the M5 too small, as I run the 5D2 with battery grip and love the size and weight, but for travel, I can forgo the size. So what is a true replacement, in your view, for the M5?

Would IBIS be of any benefit in that scenario? I wasn't really sure after watching your comparison whether or not it would and its the only feature the r7 has over the r10 that's really making me interested in it. I assume I'd be better served going with the r10 and putting the money I saved towards a better macro lens but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I'm considering the R10 as an upgrade to my SL1. My only concern is that there are no third-party lenses available. This means that getting a macro, a telephoto, and 24 - 105 in the RF series will cost me about $CDN3500. I expect I would probably end up sticking with my EF series with the adapter for years longer as a result and having to live with the implications of that issue. My alternative is to just upgrade to an SL3 and wait for probably about a decade for Canon to decide to license the RF to third parties at a likely equivalent cost then upgrade to whatever is the equivalent of an R10 at that time. Given these scenarios, I could also just upgrade my phone to the iPhone 16 Pro for about $CDN800 with loyalty credits applied by my carrier.

At one point the commenters said why the hell bother if you can have a new r10 for almost the price 5D3 or 90D. I love your views on AF being the same and lack of IBIS not being a problem with stabilised lenses. Thanks for a very comprehensive review. I apologize for the length of this comment, but I thought I would share my experience. For several years, I loved my M6 II, which I used for birding with the Tamron 100-400 Di VC and Sigma 150-600C. But I upgraded to the R7, on the strength of its IBIS and bird-eye tracking autofocus. I also purchased the RF 100-500 as my primary birding lens. I have not been disappointed. Although the R10 was also a contender, I suffer from progressive neurological shake, and the IBIS cooperates well with lens OIS, which was a deal-maker for me. That said, a friend uses the R10, and his bird photos are exquisite so YMMV. As for the rear joystick/dial on the R7, I have come to prefer it because it falls naturally under my thumb and is easily re-assigned - I use the dial for exposure compensation and the joystick for cursor movement. The weather sealing, sensor curtain, larger battery, 32 MP sensor resolution, and dual card slots also justify the price premium IMO.
I regularly shoot video for canine agility, and the absence of a 30 minute video limit is also an advantage, as is the 4K image-quality from the over-sampled signal - the M6 II also promises 4K, but the image is noticeably softer due to line skipping. Using the RF 18-150 for video, I find the IBIS helpful compared to the M6 II. I obviously have complaints: the slow read-out speed makes for rolling shutter, and the light-weight body makes for shutter shake. Both are easily avoided by using the mechanical or first curtain electronic shutter, respectively, which still provide an impressive 15 fps. I also wish the EVF had higher resolution, so I could better judge image quality in the field. But overall, I think that's its a stellar birding set-up, especially in its price range.

A year Later your comments on IBIS explain why Sony decided not to include it in their new vlogging camera the ZVE-10 II. While a lot of reviewers are being critical of this so called "Missing feature" your comments show that for vlogging its likely not all the useful. But for video the Sony camera records the gyro data with the video so you can apply stabilization in post-production.

The 32mp sensor also introduces defraction alot sooner than the 24mp sensor so if your stopping down your lens for landscape you might find its softer than at the same f stop on a lower mp sensor.
Chris frost proved this by testing the 17-55 2.8 on a r7.

was going through the comments, but just to be doubly clear without all the photography-jargon ...
r7 IBIS/ image stabilisation has NO impact on birding/ wildlife photos so might as well save 500 bucks and go in for a r10??

It really depends the the scene, but I think 6400 in video and 12800 in photos is about as high as I would want to go. Yes they are better than the older cameras, but I think that is mostly image processing in the camera.

Would think that fuji x-s10 would be better than r10 if not doing anything quick or macro. s10 got 15 min as min shutter.
Could mention fuji x-h2 being nearly a better upgrade to r10 than r7 on video alone.
might want swap as adapter is pita on it at moment.

In a studio environment, with controlled lighting, almost any camera will do. In fact, in most cases you can’t tell them apart. Since I have the Canon cameras in the shoot, to talk about them, I’m not using them to recoded the video, that is why I included the video samples.
