A Debt of Honour - Australia East Timor War Documentary

  • This extraordinary untold tale of two companies of Australian soldiers serving in East Timor, separated by 60 years, their actions inextricably bound by a debt of honour. During the Second World War a tiny group of Australian soldiers faced overwhelming odds against a huge Japanese force. These men of the 2nd Independent Company with the support and friendship of the native Timorese people held back enemy troops from Australia's doorstep. Many years later, the United Nations together with Australian Peacekeepers returned to East Timor to restore peace and security.

    My father served in East Timor for 6 months at the time I was 3 when he left, when he finally came home I was 4. My mother and I were waiting for him at the airport. I ran towards him as soon as I saw him (my mother made sure to show me photos of him and tell me where and what he was doing) and he completely ignored me and walked straight past me because he didn't even recognize me. I have the greatest respect for those whom have and are continuing to serve for their countries, but sometimes these documentaries don't reveal the effects war has on the families at home who support these soldiers.

      @Caitlin Bishop as a fellow East Timor (2000) UNTAET AUSBATT 6RAR member I can tell you many of us suffer and its always the families that suffer. My lids were all teenagers when i went but it only made it easier to explain why I had to go! My son welcomed me home in 2007 as he said it was the first time he had seen the me that he knew before i went. I hope that your dad is doing well and always remember under it all is still the man that went away but it takes sometimes a long time for him to come home in his head depending on what he went through there.
      You and your mum are the things he will help him and help ground him and if he has problems MAKE him get help I didnt get any help till 2006 and was in a very dark lonely place that only my family kept me going through now 14 years on I still have my problems but have help and also now DVA will help it only took 20 yrs. Give him my best and if you or any of your family want to contact me please do so and to anyone reading this with a similar story dont hesitate to contact me half the battle is to realize you arent in this alone and that there are many that understand because they have been there also and we are brothers always and always there for each other till the end.

    Fine soldiers, cool, calm, collected, quiet, effective.
    Very unlike so many 'Hollywood soldiers'.
    As for the Timorese, they are surely deserving of our support and total respect.

    I was there during INTERFET. I was amazed by the resilience and happiness shown by the Timorese around us. And like the young fellow said, it changes you. I try to appreciate how lucky I am every day. And I try to share this with other Australians, although I think they can't truly understand until they've seen how bad things can be elsewhere.

    Arrived in TL as a video producer with UNTAET a few days after the Millennium. Covered the activiities of INTERFET and found both the Aussie and Kiwi PKF to be superb UN Peacekeepers in every way. They were well prepared, and treated the East Timorese with respect and sensitivity - and they also protected us from Indonesian-backed militias with bad intentions. Many thanks to these brave Aussie men and women!:)

This was an honest documentry...l know the Auzzee spirit first hand. The world is in trouble right now but in the end l think that Canada and Australia will have something to say about whats right and wrong and will act on it accordingly.

      Kind of strange that in a video called "debt of honor". Still the HOW's and the WHY's are still left out of the equation.
      How many here know, or even recognize. The Japanese never had any intention of invading East Timor! It was never part of their original plans! This most important detail should be CRYSTAL CLEAR from the start. I bet it truly catch most "propaganda filled people" with a sense of surprise.
      If you guys understood the history behind it. Would know that Portugal was neutral on the WWII. And had no major issues with the Japanese. Other then the ones British, Australian and Dutch created! By effectively "invading" East Timor to cover your own fears. Deployed all this mess and consecutively left a trail of tens of thousands of people who payed the ultimate price. Most of them where innocent civilian's.
      Not a great consolation but at least there's the recognition that Australia abandoned everybody after creating the mess. :-(
      On the other hand. Damn Australia did run really fast when it "smelled" oil & gas in East Timor. :-(
      Portugal has it's own faults. With, the now obviously stupid, "ideals" of independence and self determination. For which Indonesia and Australia took full advantage and once more the Timorese payed the ultimate price. Very, very sad. :-(
      I remind that Portugal gave independence and the chance for self determination to ALL Portuguese colonies, no strings attached, no if's, no but's. That independence and freedom was "by the people and for the PEOPLE". Words that some of the unscrupulous actors of this tragedy might recognize. From a distant and forgotten moral past.
      It was not for foreign powers to take advantage and slaughter according to wish or convenience. Quite honestly, shame on you Australia and the already "traditional" USA, that was also knee deep in the mud. :-(

    • @timmillsom4457
      @timmillsom4457 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Algy 779 007 he didn't say that there weren't any memorials but the issue about visiting memorials is the fact that going to Canberra or Melbourne can be expensive and so is finding the time to travel. As for the violence, what's the issue? War is violent and we should not shy from that, who cares if theres a Japanese/German/Italian in the classroom it doesn't matter because they're in an Australian school and as such are Australian citizens. In all honesty I concur with oldmate as the world war 1 and 2 units I did at school did not cover much at all and really didn't do the wars justice. For world war 1 we just covered Franz Ferdidand and Gallipoli (both important events but well known events) and in World War 2 it was just Kokoda and The treaty of Versailles. There is also no units on the Boer War, Korea, Malaya, not much about Vietnam and nothing about Timor, Afghanistan and Iraq. These stories deserve to be taught in schools as it allows us to properly pay respects to our diggers past and present.

    It's the untold stories like this that warms the heart. Unfortunately, it always comes down to the decency of our English-speaking and close allies military personnel who spreads the good will, while our politicians don't give a toss/create the problems in the first place. British and its Commonwealth troops have almost always treated our enemies with common respect and courtesy, and we alwayd treated the civilians properly and with kindness. Bravo to our Aussie cousins for their efforts in Timor. You've done us all proud.

    I'm a Português Parabat platon comander. I send lots of respect to the Australians, for what they doing to the Timor people. I had shame to the Portugees politics, because abandone the Timor people, when Timor really needs us. Is a real shame to Portugal. Thank you Austrália.Portugal pure and simple abandone all they on Colonies and they on people like they do it in África. The seventies was the decade of shame to Portugues politicians with lots of pression of internacional new world hide order, but is a subject for other time. Of corse the internacional Portuges diplomacy work hard in the last 30 years. Is the minimum what they had to doing, for clean what they do it,in the period of Independence of ex-colonies.

      Falas como se fosse nossa obrigação. Pah o império Português já era há muito tempo. Portugal não tem qualquer interesse estratégico naquela parte do mundo nem qualquer afinidade actual. Até parece que estás a falar dos trás-montanos ou Algarvios. Fala em defender Portugueses e Portugal, fala em usares aquilo que te pagam para seres um "comandante de pelotão" para te preocupares com as ordens que te dão e deixares de enxovalhar publicamente o teu país. Se fosses COMANDO não falarias assim, mas pelos vistos não passas de uma merda de um páraquedista, sempre infiel à sua bandeira. Vai para a politica que pode ser que a tua voz seja ouvida, pois na vida militar estás mal. Com estas palavras és o pior exemplo que um "oficial" pode ser. Com "comandantes de pelotão" como tu, as forças armadas Portuguesas NUNCA poderiam ser enviadas para lado nenhum, pois estaríamos a enviar alguns RAMBOS frustrados, viciados em jogos de video e com sonhos de grandeza. A vida militar é para seres inteligentes, leais e fieis a um princípio chamado "PORTUGAL" ... não para ti, que tens muitas opiniões e raiva intrínseca por esse mesmo principio. MAMA SUME

    • @ludvanbarbosix
      @ludvanbarbosix 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ... e se não sabes, eu ensino-te ... sabes porque toda a gente se preocupou tanto com Timor? Para serem os primeiros na fila para negociar o petróleo disponível. Era o que faltava mandar filhos de Portugal morrer para defender interesses económicos de outras nações como a Austrália ou os E.U.A. O povo esse continua igualzinho ao tempo dos Portugueses, depois Indonésios e agora em "liberdade", a viver na pobreza. O que mudou foi apenas o Status Quo e quem enche os bolsos. Mais alguma explicação, não hesites em perguntar. Precisas de muitas lições de História e Macro-Economia antes de te armares em defensor do Bem e Herói Nacional.

      p.s. e para que fique bem claro, NÃO foi nenhum movimento militar que deu "liberdade" a Timor. Foram os esforços da diplomacia Portuguesa, durante anos que conseguiu desbloquear a situação nas Nações Unidas e o esforço do povo Português em chamar a atenção da comunidade internacional, inclusive a Austrália, que de uma forma cobarde assistiu a semanas de chacinas, a poucas milhas de distância. Mais, "SHAME" devias ter tu de tratar a língua inglesa de forma paupérrima, o teu comentário mais parece o de um Homem das cavernas a falar Inglês, fica a dica, quando não souberes, não tentes, só nos envergonhas.

    * I would enlist as an officer rather than a grunt. The opportunities for advancement are better for an officer.
    * I would have been a career soldier. At the time I was just looking for camaraderie and adventure (found both) and would have been happy to remain a grunt forever provided the first was fulfilled. But what I didn't take advantage of was the wonderful education system the military offers to those who want to do the work.
