In 1975, after the Vietnam War, Australia and America didn't have enough soldiers left to fight all of Indonesia.
1999 - 2002: Thousands of Australian soldiers FOUGHT for East Timor's independence and stayed until 2008 protecting and training the people living there. Now they want to cut Australia out all together. The oil companies will not protect them from the next invasion and they will only be able to escape to nearby Australia.
This man does not mention these things.
Australians aren't so bad, we just want to be able to pay for feeding and protecting the refugees when they arrive. Not many people in Australia means not so much tax $$$.

Good thing West Timor remains with Indonesia. Both parts were equal in terms of wealth in late 90's. But now, West Timor far surpasses East Timor in terms of development, although they have no oil. They can get guaranteed annual subsidies from central government, which is about $2.3 billion in 2023 through DIPA funds. While, East Timor needs to carefully sip from their limited reserves of $17 billion petroleum funds, which can be exhausted in 10 years, if the problematic Greater Sunrise field isn't operational soon.

    • @mr_alderson
      @mr_alderson ปีที่แล้ว +5

Actually, we Indonesians are quite disappointed with TL. During the early days of Indonesian independence and TL's inclusion in the Republic of Indonesia, our government prioritized TL more than any other province. This caused jealousy among various parties. However, we later understood that TL was truly lagging behind other regions. We all understood and considered them as our brothers who also needed to struggle.
Then, an incident occurred where the opposition provoked on a large scale, creating public opinion that Indonesia was a colonizing nation. We find it outrageous.
How could we fight for them only for them to betray Indonesia?
If we were lying, just look at the present. See how Indonesia is so tolerant towards everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion. It is not a barrier for us to unite. The international community acknowledges that Indonesia is the most tolerant and friendly nation towards fellow human beings.
Under our current leader, President Jokowi, our unity and solidarity are growing stronger to become a great nation, advancing and competing internationally.
This is a lesson for all of us, and history is the best teacher.

No other places called it 'aggression/invasion', but because of the other parties with interests, created unrest, and the rest is history.
I'm not discrediting what East Timor experienced for their independence and Indonesia wasn't perfect there were many events took place to shape it to what it is today, but Indonesia intention was never to rob East Timor, yet they rather listen and take the hand of hungry foxes for 'independence'. Back in the early 2000s Australians label Indonesians oppressors for “invading” a small helpless country that is timor (which have always been indonesian, speak indonesian, and half of it is still comfortable being officially indonesian).
And it’s not like Indonesia can do anything with UN and the rest of western civilization uniting to back Australia. Plus if anything, in SEA the mentality isn’t like your typical oppressor mentality. People here prefer avoiding confrontation even if it means losing, that’s why we don’t need ASEAN as much as Europe needs EU.
So there have your timor, and look at the real aggressor now. Nobody helped Timor during Covid, even their president had to slave to help their people. Where’s Australia, who claimed to be savior of the Timor people? Does Australia care? Not at all, because Australia never did.

Many ppl think Australia had helped East Timor to get their independence ... but
Do they know that it was Australia that actually asked Suharto to invade East Timor after Portuguese left in 1970s
Why ?? ... because Fretilin - The Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor - was a nationalist lefty that had strong socialist beliefs toward Marxism
plus ... Suharto and his regime was basically just USA's puppet leader

lots of people, including separatist from East Timor don't know or don't want to know :
    1. Indonesia at the Time is Under Dictatorship know as "Orde Baru" or "New Order" under 'Smilling General Soeharto' so life of other Indonesian aside of those in big cities in Java island not so good either. So it is not that we targeted only East Timor, we (Indonesian outside Java Island ) also get more less the same suffering. We even have "Tukang Bakso" joke to this day still infamous because it tell us younger genearation that the Soeharto Dictatorship Regime will mercilessly get rid of all of who oppose them by disguising Hitman as food vendor.
    2. We build public Facilities (School. Hospital, Public trasportation Station Etc) and we create Public system which make East Timor be able to stand equal to all Indonesian in the sense of economic, security and Cultural Standing, which will take East TImor lost of time if they just do it themself. The hell we recognize East Timor is "Indonesian" right after they even join us because West Timor Practically the same Ethnic as East Timor with very same cultural afinity, we even create monument of Timor Leste in the form of making Replica of their cultural enviroment in "Taman Mini Indonesia Indah" as form of acknowledgement.
    3. We Practically Gain NOTHING from those poor region, yes East Timor Have OIL AND GAS, but we didn't have the time to properly extract it we Indonesian busy making East Timor Decent place to Live
    4. Australian Goverment involvement at security intervention start long before the Independence of East Timor took place. They manipulated the Referendum of East Timor Independence the news to make like Indonesian Army doing systematic genocide, why ? Because they took story from only East Timor Prespective without concerning the fatigue of Indonesian Army trying their best to stand ground and after unbearable ambush and sneak attack one by one Indonesian Army Finally start to seek and neutralize Rebel Camp. We Have right to do so as we Indonesian rightfully and obligatory defending our border at the time. But ofc we are the bad guy because we return fire after getting shot ? Regarding this matter, the invasion and subsequent “integration” of Timor-Leste into the Indonesian Republic was only recognized by Australia and from 1978 negotiations were conducted between the two States in order to conclude a Treaty, regarding the delimitation of the maritime border, the “Timor Gap Treaty” and on December 11, 1989, signed the treaty establishing a joint zone for the exploitation of resources in the Timor Sea.

    It is funny...
How TL people call Indonesia colonist,
But no with Portuguese which even prohibits passing the asphalt road and not builded Public Facilities for them.
FYI, when first company Aussie army came to Dili by plane, they toughed Dili in a state of war. So they as fast as possible took a vital position. At that time, Brimob (paramilitary from police)still take a rest in tend had been surprise when Aussie army come to their tend.
Them there was a shooting contact between the 2 parties.
At that time, civil still live as usual.
Aussie army can't tell difference between Fretilin army and civil and culture in TL.
Actually there is a lot of fraud in referendum support by Aussie and Malaysia army.
There is some journalist from Singapore and Thailand want to report it, but their News banned.

Once upon a time, Australia had a sneaky plan up its sleeve! Before lending a helping hand to East Timor's independence, they had a brilliant insight: why not turn the tables and nab those precious oil reserves from Indonesia? So, they cleverly supported the cause of an independent East Timor, making it a piece of cake to claim those oil riches!

  • @paschalx

the Indonesian president at that time allowed Timor Leste to become independent because many other countries interfered in various matters..and if the Indonesians continued to defend it then more East Timorese would be victims.. as a result the resources of an independent Timor Leste were taken by some of these countries. .well we just saw Timor Leste from the side shook our heads and left🥱😪😴

    • @ian7033-qj9wg
      @ian7033-qj9wg ปีที่แล้ว +1

Allowed? Lol. The Australian army faced off the TNI in TimTim and forced them out. Then dealt with the anti freedom militias. Thats how they got independence because as we know the Indonesian government trucked in criminal militias before the referendum, armed and financed them. So the President didnt "allow" anything.
