I quit violin. I’ve been playing piano. Practicing vibrato hurt my old fingers. I took about a thousand falls as a street skater in the 90’s and keeping the fingers of my left hand curled for hours on end wasn’t working for me. I moved on to Boogie Woogie piano and I could do a one off rendition of BWV 565 now.
Great video! For those of you in a hurry - my (very awesome) violin teacher used to say that it’s best for instructors not to push vibrato before the student is ready because the result is often an ugly, unnatural-sounding vibrato. In the meantime, he showed me some slo-mo, “drunken sounding” exercises using each string and each finger by turn to help with muscle memory and staying relaxed. He said it’s more efficient to acquire a beautiful vibrato at one’s own pace than it is to struggle even longer at unlearning a bad one down the line.
You're Lucky, I am a very stressed person and it's obvious in my playing. I have been playing for quite a while now, as a hobby, but I can play some more difficult pieces already but I can't do vibrato because I am tense, I try to let loose but am failing all the time and my teacher won't give me any tips saying it's not important but my slow pieces are always plain, the sound is clear but they're kinda boring if yk what I mean. So whenever I play slow pieces with friends I feel completely disappointed, what's the point in playing the right notes at the right time and having a clear sound if there is nothing more to it
I've been playing the violin on and off for the past 5 years, but I just started to gain the desire of learning vibrato seriously. The fact that you mentioned keeping the fingers, arm, and shoulder loose really made the progress easier as I do get tense when I play. I will definitely apply all of these and hope I can get a decent vibrato in a few months!
It’s really easy to get so focused on other things that you forget to keep loose! Sometimes I’ll be in the middle of something then be like whoa, how long have I been clenching my jaw like this?!
1. Start with first or second finger on G string 2. Make sure everything’s loose but with a slight pressure 3. The first way, imagine a train pushing your hand. 4. The second one a string is pulling back. It’s pulling towards you. Your finger will be crunched together 5. Go back and fourth between pulling and pushing. 6. Practice without the bow first! Then add the bow. 7. Use a metronome at 60 beats. One motion per beat 8. Start slow and be patient 9. Keep knuckles and joints very loose. 10. For extra help place scroll against the wall and practice your vibrato movements.

In my orchestra class some people learned how to play vibrato which I've always wanted to learn so now I can learn it over the summer. Update: I quit but I'm finally deciding to try again. lol Update: I forgot to update but I finally learned vibrato! At first I was confused because I there were a lot of different methods that people were teaching. But the key is to use one method and stick with it because all of them work no matter which one you use. Try to practice as much as possible and keep going even if you feel like giving up. Tysm for the video!

I had been struggling with vibrato for a few years, it rarely has felt relaxed and sometimes I couldn't get it at all. After watching this video and a little slow practice with the metronome I can finally do a relaxed vibrato! I think what was helpful was breaking the motion with the meteonome into 3 steps, neutral, forward, and backwards. Thank you so much!
You made it so easy to understand! I've had other violinists try to explain it to me and it just never made any sense. Thank you so much! And your practice tips are amazing, my vibrato is already improving.

I got into a bad habit of shaking my finger, so it’s like what you’re meant to do, but with the finger instead of wrist! It sounds exactly how it’s supposed to and my teacher congratulated me but I’m doing it wrong! I think it’ll take a lot to break the habit but can’t wait to try these tips. Thank you x x
@@SHARMONY It doesn't mean I will ever be able to do it though. As you said, it is an unnatural thing to make the fingers do. And my fingers are quite beat up from a lifetime of working on automobiles. I will keep trying.
Thanks for giving a good amount of detail; the train and string analogy worked well for me ;) You really put yourself in the position of the total beginner, which really helps! (sign of a good teacher ;)) There might be many videos out there but each video speaks to people differently - keep up the good work! And thanks again :)
i broke a bow trying Vibrato twice :( i have a tight grip when i do it and it took me months to get the basics i also learned to always have multiple bows in my case lol
Can you also put a video about shifting finger positions and it's related exercises? This was a nice experience, I hope I can get better at shifting too.
I've actually been playing for 18 years but my teacher have never really put effort into teaching me vibrato, and over the years it's become really difficult in making some great sounding vibrato. :( Do u think it's still possible to learn it after such a long time?
I remember asking my orchestra teacher some time ago, about first year I started, "When will we learn vibrato?". She responded by saying "Well, do you know how to play all or most of your notes in tune?". I respnded with a simple no. Later I learned that to play vibrato, it is important to know how to play your notes correctly. Just putting it out there that if anyone here wants to learn how to do vibrato, it is important to know how you play your notes correctly. Of course this isn't required, but it can make it much easier later on. Vibrato while doing a narp with uncomfortable finger positions could possibly be hard to unlearn as you figure out the correct positions.
I am about to start learning vibrato. I can't wait to all my ups and downs:-) Since I have been playing only for the second month, being 52 and with shortest fingers ever, you can imagine I have all them issues at the same time, like the pressures, positions of hands, holding the bow, etc. But I won't give up! Thanks for the video!
I've just heard my teacher say "𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝘃𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼." Me: But how do you position it?!?!?
Gioacchino Lopez I’m sorry your teacher said that! that’s misleading! Vibrato does not come “naturally” to any of us. Even the ones who get it faster than others. It is a very difficult skill for most and I’m seeing more and more that it is a very neglected skill. It seems like most of us are left to figure it out on our own. I mean, are we left to let spiccato and ricochet “come naturally?” Vibrato is one of the difficult skills on the violin and needs thorough and correct instruction and guidance. There are actually 8 vibrato activating switches that leave all other vibrato advice in the dust and makes vibrato a tangible skill for everyone.
Thank you for this... I just started playing so this is probably more advanced than I should be learning but this video gave me a much better understanding
Im a junior in HS and I've never been taught vibrato since I started playing in 4th grade since all of my teachers just assumed we'd pick up on it. Since I don't have a private teacher, I've been trying to teach myself it but it comes out all weird where I'm vibrating my finger instead of my wrist. Compared to other members in my chamber orchestra, I always feel their sound and vibrato is a lot more mature than mine (obviously lol) but I want to try and change that even though I'm late to the game I'll definitely try this so thank you! (I have a senior all-country concert in about a month so hopefully, I'll improve a bit for then!)
I don’t have an instrument at home bc I play in school so I’m literally practicing the finger movements on a Poland spring water bottle I quit life update: i quit orchestra lmao
Thank you. Of all the vibrato tutorials that i watched, i think yours is the clearest and most helpful to me who thought that vibrato is beyond my reach. With your explanation of the push and pull motion on the wrist, i got a better understanding of how vibrato is done. I need a lot and lots of practice to get a decent sound but at least my left hand knows how it should move to produce the sound. Now, i only need my right hand to cooperate and not freeze when my brain commands the left hand to shift directions.
This was incredibly helpful. I am a vocalist and pianist, but I play many other instruments on a basic/intermediate level. Violin was actually my first instrument. I have played it for about 15 years, but still haven't been able to get vibrato. I'm playing the viola a lot lately and I want it to sound nicer. I was struggling to get rid of the straight tone. I'm glad I was finally able to learn some vibrato today. I always thought it was in the fingers, but I get it now. It's definitely not just the fingers!
My teacher makes it seem so easy when he demonstrates but when I do it I just shake my whole arm violently like I’m having a seizure. It’s harder than it looks.

Kaylee Cooney bruh I’m using a folded tshirt 😂🤦🏻♀️
My neck still hurts even if I use a shoulder rest😂
i love how this comment section is so relatable lmao
Lovely, l have seen so many tutorials on vibrato, but you explained in the best way.Thank you very much.
I’m really glad the video is helpful!
VIBROTO IS NOT EASY
anyone in 2020
Clau Marin me😂
BOI WHY U GATTA MAKE FUN OF MEH
Clau Marin ??
Clau Marin yes. I can’t do it,
Meh
I can’t stop shaking my entire violin!!!
This legit helped me so much. thank you!!! 💗
so so happy to hear that :D
Thank you for the lesson. This is the first coherent understandable lesson I have received on the subject.
great to hear!
And thanks again :)
so happy this worked! best of luck!
that wall technique is gold
i broke a bow trying Vibrato twice :( i have a tight grip when i do it and it took me months to get the basics i also learned to always have multiple bows in my case lol
How did you break a bow with vibrato?
Lmfao what?
@RetroFlare I'm heavy handed and when I did vibrator I pushed down to hard causing the hair in the bow to rip and pull out
Have you considered switching to dbl bass… or perhaps to percussion?
Can you also put a video about shifting finger positions and it's related exercises? This was a nice experience, I hope I can get better at shifting too.
Ayush Pandey I suck at shifting after going to third I can’t get to first in the right position then my notes sound all gross and stuff
I'm a sixth grader trying to learn vibrato, but the earlier the better! This is so much less complicated than others...thanks!
I've actually been playing for 18 years but my teacher have never really put effort into teaching me vibrato, and over the years it's become really difficult in making some great sounding vibrato. :(
Do u think it's still possible to learn it after such a long time?
Yes! It takes a lot of effort to undo bad habits but of course it’s possible
I am right now learning the vibrato and this taught me a lot
OMG this vid helped me so much! Thank you! 👍👍👍
i'm glad!
Thank you, very informative video :-)
I am about to start learning vibrato. I can't wait to all my ups and downs:-)
Since I have been playing only for the second month, being 52 and with shortest fingers ever, you can imagine I have all them issues at the same time, like the pressures, positions of hands, holding the bow, etc. But I won't give up!
Thanks for the video!
I like your teaching method, i actually just move my fingers back and fourth when doong vibrato (i know its the wrong way)
ha, hopefully my tutorial is helpful!
I have been playing for 4 years and I still haven't learned until now, thank you for this tutorial 😊😊😊
As a cellist, my brain finds trying to do this on the viola nearly impossible😂😂😂
You shall watch twoset violin
Radha Thapa omg yes
I'm trying to do this on viola I CAN'T
It seems so much easier on a cello lol
@@taekookie4life950 armyyy (: and I play the viola too! Fighting!
When I see that, it's like easy. But when I try, oh my god, so hard. But I keep trying. Thanks for your tutorial. It's the best vibrato tutorial 👍🏼
I am literally using a string to help out on moving my hand 😂💜💜
if it works then it works!
Jennifer Vazquez get on my level I’m using a water bottle 😂😂
I start learning vibrato. I see many tutorial on yotube but i think yours is easy to understand. So detail. Thankyou
You’re welcome!
I've just heard my teacher say
"𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝘃𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼."
Me: But how do you position it?!?!?
oof
Thank you so much for teaching this to me I feel like I went everywhere to learn it but you explained it perfectly.
Glad it was helpful!
Thnx you very much really... I have a teacher but she just say it will come naturally but unfortunately I'm not a natural born talent 😭
So happy that this helps!
@@AmysMusic7 thnx a lot :(
@@josh.lo8572 I teach the 8 vibrato activating switches that should solve your vibrato whoas forever. I can teach them to you if you want
@@AmysMusic7 thnx but I have problem with your language
Thank you for this... I just started playing so this is probably more advanced than I should be learning but this video gave me a much better understanding
Thanks a lot! This was really helpful. 🥰
you're welcome!
Compared to other members in my chamber orchestra, I always feel their sound and vibrato is a lot more mature than mine (obviously lol) but I want to try and change that even though I'm late to the game
I'll definitely try this so thank you!
(I have a senior all-country concert in about a month so hopefully, I'll improve a bit for then!)
I don’t have an instrument at home bc I play in school so I’m literally practicing the finger movements on a Poland spring water bottle I quit life
update: i quit orchestra lmao
F
Not so Anonymously I’m practicing on how holding the bow on a big marker
‘ey i mean it’s better than nOt practicing 🤷🏻♀️🙈
Not a bad idea!
You could rent one
Or just do what I do and bring it to school when you need to
I’ve tried getting all my directors to teach me vibrato and I think you’re have been the best demonstration I’ve seen
First fingers are hardest for me.
The third and Second finger is easier for me. I'm okay with pinkie finger--
You are such a great teacher
Instructions unclear, hand stuck in toaster
yep
When she was demonstrating the slow thing all I heard was mooooooooooooooooo
I hear a siren wheewhoowheewhoo
@@SHARMONY yes this!!
Happy that you include viola 😃
Amist all the viola jokes! Lol 😂
I can really appreciate someone teaching interesting tricks an tips that nearly anyone can use to progress. Nice vid Sharlee!
Glad it was helpful!
you: you need short fingernails
me: good, so it doesn't matter that i bite my nails :)
