You're a great violinist and teacher! I'm a self-taught violin player. It's amazing when I watched your were saying in another video "to visualize your right arm and the bow as a whole", that was exactly I told my (martial arts) students several month ago when I explained the principles of Chinese martial arts can also be applied to daily life! This time, your explanation of using the thumb to support the violin to release the tension on the neck has solved my long time struggling, because I realized that the thumb-supporting can indeed release the tension of the neck, but I was not for sure whether it's allowed. Thank you very much!
Thank you for commenting! It's admirable that you are a self-taught violinist! I'm sure martial arts and violin playing have a lot in common! When we are in the process of mastery, we learn to master ourselves and life as well! Thank you for pointing out the important part in my previous video about posture adjustment: Our bow being a part of our right arm! And yes, our thumb can support our fingers a lot better to make certain techniques easier and faster, like vibrato! Glad my videos are helping your violin journey! :)
Wow, this is really one of the best videos I've watched on learning vibrato; you have such grace and calmness in your teaching style! I've recognized that those who do vibrato well do look very relaxed, but I've struggled to practice relaxed when doing vibrato on violin. These tips will be very helpful. The funny thing is I use vibrato very effectively when playing guitar and find it's easy for me, but not so much on violin. I don't even remember how I learned to play with vibrato on guitar. Thanks and take care!
I am so glad to hear that this video is helpful for you in learning vibrato! :) It's common to feel uneasy to do vibrato in a relaxed manner. Vibrato on guitar might be easier because of the angle of your arm, and you don't have to hold up the guitar with your left hand at the same time. But with these exercises, you will learn to vibrate on the violin more comfortably! Let me know how it goes! :)
Truly wonderful! I can’t wait to implement these exercises into my nightly practice, my teacher just gave me the go ahead to start learning vibrato. I’m older, (63) and know that relaxation is absolutely necessary to avoid pain and injury, and to achieve a beautiful sound. Thank you very much!
You're very welcome! I'm so happy to hear that this video resonated with you! Yes, releasing the tension is so important for your health AND beautiful sound! Thank you for commenting. Let me know how your vibrato practice goes! :) 🎻
This is easily one of the most instructive videos available on thr subject of vibrato. I am a self-taught viola player, beginning four years ago, and none of my journey would have been possible without such instructive videos as these. I am grateful to have discovered this channel and will see what improvements are possible with my posture. The concept of freedom and relaxation in achieving a good vibrato are so very helpful! A master class from a master musician! 🎶 🎻😊
I'm so happy to hear that this video helped you understand vibrato better! Welcome to my channel!! :) I can't wait to hear more about your viola journey!
Dear Ye-Jin this video is so full of useful suggestions. Starting from the dotted rhythm thinking the movement as just one impulse; the combination of arm and wrist vibrato and last but not least your secret. When I studied at the Conservatory the use of the thumb was not allowed so I felt such a tension all over the arm. This approach gives a new sense of freedom to experiment new solutions and as a feedback to this also my finger thrills are improved in speed and intonation too. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with such a generous way
I'm so happy that this video has given you some freedom in your overall playing with your left hand!! Releasing tension is so important to improve any technique, and you have just unlocked the path! Well done seeking and receiving new information that feels better to you! Congratulations, and happy practicing! :)
Ye- jin. Thanks for the amazing lesson. My left hand is not so flexible. My fingers are not bending like yours. I work on it but still I suspect, I need more time to do it properly. On video it looks so easy… Well, I will keep practicing.
Joanna, glad to hear that this lesson was helpful! Follow the steps from the beginning, ensuring your hand is not tight and your joint moves. You'll get there! Happy practicing!! :)
Some teavhers go thru the steps. You explain the rationale for each exercise. Its a function of learning style. I appreciate how you integrate the two so pretending to rub the finger board lightly is to achieve a more relaxed vibrato. Now the concept makes so much more sense. Love that anchoring with the distal knuckle of the finger. I now feel a better sense of direction to guide me in my study. Thank you.
I'm so happy to hear that how I explained each step helped you to understand the intention behind each exercise and you feel better sense of direction in your study! Thank you so much for commenting and giving me your feedback! Happy practicing! :)
I have also the thumb shape and position the same..for its placement opposite the first or second finger I thought it was only for intonation matter... With stress I vibrate easier!
With stress from your thumb? If you support the violin with your thumb in a way that supports the finger you are vibrating, yes, vibrato can be easier! :) Thank you for commenting!

I suck at vibrato, it looks slow and I don’t rly get a vibrate sound
I suggest start practicing slowly and gradually get faster when your joints are flexible enough. Let me know how it goes!
