    My goal is that by the end of this video, you can successfully have your hand moving in a relaxed, beautiful and SLOW vibrato.
    The biggest thing to remember is that vibrato takes time to learn!
    Start so slowly and make sure you have the correct hand movement. Then SLOWLY try moving faster. As you practice your vibrato, you'll notice you're able to put more and more movements into one bow until you find yourself actually moving your hand fast enough!
    Give yourself grace and enjoy the journey!
    I truly hope this helps someone with their vibrato!
    If you're looking for a violin, this one is my absolute favorite:

    I played the violin as a kid and did not play for 40 years. My daughter plays now and she has a beautiful vibrato; she plays better than I ever did and has inspired me to learn again. Vibrato always seemed quite a mystery until this video. I think I can follow these steps and get there, even at my age! Thanks!

    Thanks, that lesson breaks it down into sizable chunks that I can focus in on. "Gluing" my wrist to the violin helps lots.

      Make sure you have a super solid learning base on your violin before starting vibrato! But when you do, I just made another vibrato video with some tips on how to make sure your violin doesn’t shake! th-cam.com/video/u0tcbrzmhqs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=gwGTxTrU-AOy4Ume

    You are a fantastic teacher! Wish I had you as a kid when I played. I dropped it after 4 yrs sadly. I believe I can do this now with your help! I live in a condo currently and need a silent violin for practice. Any suggestions? Thank you!

    • @Corrietheviolinist
      @Corrietheviolinist  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I live in a condo too and don’t practice with a mute. A mute really alters the sound of the violin and masks any issues actually going on. If you feel you really need one occasionally, a practice mute works great.

    • @johnjones4129
      @johnjones4129 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have used a heavy metal mute for years…works really well..for all my practice. Recently I thought , sod it, I’ll ditch the mute and the neighbors can put up with my music. Overnight my playing improved and I get so much more satisfaction now and can express myself so much more.

    Great lesson. I'm a returner - did grade VIII age 18, didn't find an outlet for violin compatible with medical school curriculum at university, and hardly played until I turned 63. I have a great teacher, taking me right back to basics. But she teaches arm vibrato, which doesn't come as easily to me as the wrist vibrato you teach. But, hey! I'll do my best to learn it, then I'll have both methods in my toolkit.

      This is an incredible story! I’m so so glad you’re picking it back up and loving it!
      I’m genuinely curious; is there a reason your teacher is specifically doing arm vibrato or is she cool with wrist vibrato as well? I’m always curious when teachers are very specific about something the reasoning behind it.

  • @janijelly

    Thank you, this was such a great step by step on how to start with vibrato! I had been finding it so tricky just getting the wrist movement, but this has helped so much and I appreciate how you broke it down! :) I will definitely be practicing this a bunch!!
    I have a question - eventually when we get familiar with the movement and increase speed, how should we go about practicing with our wrist not against the violin? I tried this briefly and found it was more difficult and feels different from when the wrist is against the violin

    • @Corrietheviolinist
      @Corrietheviolinist  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question!! Keep practicing in fourth position while you’re getting the movement down. Once you’re comfortable with it, move it down to first keeping the same position.

    How much pressure do you apply to the strings when learning vibrato?

    • @Corrietheviolinist

      Full pressure on the donut, light pressure on the spaghetti.

  • @kozmobluemusic
    @kozmobluemusic 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I keep moving the violin and automatically do a death grip with my thumb. And once I move faster i can’t do the donut to spaghetti - my finger stiffens up
    :(
    I feel like I’m forcing that motion and can’t do it relaxed
    Have any tips for that?

    • @Corrietheviolinist
      @Corrietheviolinist  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      A huge tip is gently placing your scroll against a wall. It helps to stabilize your violin so you can isolate your hand and focus fully on your vibrato.

    I'm 63, and have been playing guitar for 50 years. Vibrato on the electric guitar and classical guitar are quite different techniques, but neither of them rely on a mobile finger tip joint - I'm struggling with that! 😢 (fiddling for 5 years - it's so hard!)

    • @Corrietheviolinist

      Yesss getting that distal joint moving is the most important thing for violin vibrato. But gosh that’s not a natural movement at all 😂
