    we're having a slightly early spring here in Australia, it's not that warm, but all the plants have decided it is! blossoms are beginning to come out, my deciduous seedlings are sprouting leaves, and my Japanese dwarf quince has been flowering since autumn non stop! and our camellia bush is giving it's yearly beautiful display. a real blessing in quarantine!

    I bought an Hibiscus because I was inspired by one of your other videos, it was massive and I made several cuttings to bring it slowly down to bonsai size, each cutting made a flower, was a beautiful bright yellow colour

    I have always known the Jade as the "Chinese money tree" as well. Keeping it near the front door is supposed to attract money into the home. Can't hurt, but I have an old jade by the door, and we are anything but rich! Here in Victoria, Australia, the seem to be almost unkillable, I might take a cutting and pot it up . . . PS, love seeing robin, she is beautiful and a credit to you!

    Gutted I missed the Live Chat, as you had my favourite things, talking about jade bonsai care and Scott's jades. 🥰
    My "best" jade, that I think is about 10yr, grew itself into a single-trunk, flat-top tree shape (approx 25cm tall) and since I repotted it in Feb I swear the bottom taper has really flared (maybe 5-6cm now). Nigel's advice is spot on as, back in 2017, I nearly killed it from over watering - leaves started getting corky blisters, other leaves dropped off and found roots were mostly black - luckily rot didn't get the trunk and it's better than ever now!

    Aloe vera lives outdoors year-round here in south Texas, and I have lots and lots of plants in my yard. I never thought of making an aloe vera bonsai, but it’s an interesting idea. It’s not one of those aloes that naturally forms a tree, but with creative pruning, something quite different may be possible.
    Aloe vera grown in the ground outdoors takes on a different growth habit from aloe grown in a pot indoors. The leaves get bigger and tougher, and the spines along the leaf edges get big and sharp. It puts up interesting spikes of orange flowers. If you didn’t know better, you might think the outdoor plant was a different species.

    The way I water Jade that has given me great results for years is to water only when the plant needs it. I don't feel the soil but the leaves. If they are firm and plump the plant has enough water. if they feel more like soft leather, it's time to water. I have a plant that I moved form a small about 10 cm pot to a large patio planer just over 1 year ago that is doing quite well.

    Loved seeing all the beautiful flowers on your bonsai in the start of your video. Robin has really become imprinted on you. What will happen to her when the fall/winter arrives? Nice gifts! That bear sure makes your forest! Much better than a dinosaur. Enjoyed the updates on the last two trees. How are you dealing with the reverse taper on the Natal ficus? The little bunnies look great under the yellow hibiscus.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Pat, the reverse taper on the Ficus should slowly disappear as the root base gets better, it will flare the bottom of the tree out and the taper will begin to go the other way some day.
      I'm not sure what will happen with Robin, we are hoping the bird slowly goes wild by fall and begins to ignore us humans!
      I had fun with the gifts, you have to have fun with your bonsai!

    Have you ever grown azalea bonsai from seed? They are very tiny seeds. I got a bonsai kit with azalea seeds, a small ceramic pot and bonsai soil. I’ve only even take care of Thanksgiving cacti and other succulents, so I’m not sure how to proceed. I sowed about 15 seeds in the pot on April 30th, but only one germinated. However it is growing quite well, I began to feed it a diluted solution on what I feed my other plants and it seems to respond d well to it. I just want to make sure that I don’t kill it, even though so far it seems to be very happy on my windowsill. And advise for the future?

    Nigel, How do you get the air roots to grow on the aloe. I had a huge one that was just growing on one large thick trunk and the leaves kept getting longer and thicker until it got so top heavy that it just fell right out of the pot. I did trim and replant the trunk and hope it will reroot and grow but if it had gotten some of those air roots it may have helped to hold it up. Robin seems pretty attached to you!!!

    • @TheBonsaiZone

    Nigel, I’m new to bonsai plants and find it pretty interesting. Regarding your outdoor plants. I notice you leave them outside on tables etc. and obviously the plants do fine over winter. How is it the roots don’t freeze and die?? I was told the normal “outdoor” plants need to stay outside or at least in a greenhouse protected from winds etc. please advise and/or correct any info I may have stated incorrectly. I am attempting a rhododendron and would like to know how to over-winter it. Should I leave it out, greenhouse ( unheated) or bring it in? Thanks so much. Great videos. Jim

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I separate my trees into three groups, Tropical, Hardy and Temperate. The tropical trees come into the heated plant room before the frost hits them.
      The temperate trees go into the unheated basement next, after the leaves have fallen off the trees, this would be trees like Japanese Maples, Black Pines etc. This is usually in October.
      The hardy trees stay on the benches usually to late December and then the too go into the unheated basement for a couple of months. They usually go back on the benches mid March. I keep them out in December until the temperatures get below -15 C.
      The Temperate trees go back out on the benches when the night time temperatures stay above -10 C, usually late April.
      The Tropical trees go back on the bench when the risk of frost is over, usually the start of June.

    My Jades are indoors in a south facing window. I live in England so although it can be very hot we also get a lot of rain so can't keep them outside. I water once a week but the leaves are falling off. Is it because of too much water or not enough?

    • @katedodd79
      @katedodd79 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do the leaves look a little wrinkly when they drop or are they fat? Wrinkly is likely underwatering, if that helps.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would check the soil before watering, if the soil is dry and you expect sunny days ahead then water thoroughly, if the soil is still slightly damp and you have cloudy days ahead then hold off on the watering. It is best to check both the moisture of the soil and the weather report to make a good decision!

    • @irenepotter2709
      @irenepotter2709 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBonsaiZone How do you check the soil? Also the leaves aren't wrinkled they just go a lighter and lighter brown colour and then drop off.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@irenepotter2709 You can stick your finger into the soil about 10 mm (3/8") down and see if the soil is damp or sticky. When it is dry it will feel crumbly. A Jade will drop it's older leaves as the branch grows. They start loosing colour and then drop off. If you use bonsai soil, the clay particles in the soil change colour when they are wet, so you can tell how dry the soil is just by the colour.

    I'm a mechanical deigner (sound familiar?) so geometrically, I don't quite understand how having an inside lip on a pot would add stability?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When the roots fill the pot, the lip holds the root ball in place so it can't tip out of the pot. With some of the more tapered pots, the tree, roots and all can come out of the pot easily in the wind.

    @Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone I am planning a Mango tree bonsai, I have 4 month old saplings, kindly suggest on the pruning, potting, soil type and other important points.
    Will be ever grateful for your insights.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I let my Mango grow unrestricted for 3 years and then I cut the truck back to a height of about 30 cm or 1 foot. The tree then got new branches all around the cut point and looked really good. It grew for another year, but then died over the next winter from too much cold and not enough light. I hope to grow another some day!
      I grew it in bonsai soil and it did really well.

    What potting mix you are using for your bonsai trees ?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface as my basic mix. If I have composted pine bark on hand, I'll add 10 to 20 percent to the mix. The soil is screened to remove the dust and fine particles and I fertilize regularly.
