Which is the best Scream movie? While doing this list, I discovered I had a lot of opinions about Scream 4, some good, but mostly negative. A lot of that has to do with the way the characters were written. There are a lot of plot holes which I will talk about when I do a Scream 4 review, but my general takeaway from this movie is that they went into it with the best intentions, but rather than trying to make the best Scream movie, they just ended up making the next one.
Scream 4 was definitely a step up from the previous outing (especially with the kills), and brought a lot to the Scream franchise as well as left us with many questions. Was Jill the best killer? Is Kirby still alive? Was the alternate opening actually better? Until I do that review/ending explained, and separate video of the Scream films ranked best to worst, please enjoy my commentary on the cast and characters that made up this still very enjoyable sequel.
A few caveats before you begin watching. I am only ranking the characters from the main Scream 4 cast, who appear in the pictured credits in the end... Which is pretty much every single one of them. For the returning characters, ie Sidney, Gale, Dewey, their placement on this list is not indicative of their standing in the franchise as a whole, but rather ranked relative to their appearance in Scream 4, and in relation to the other characters in this movie. And finally, this list is just my personal opinion. If you don't agree with me, that's fine. I respect your opinion and only ask that you do the same, as well as comment down below what your rankings would be. Zack Cherry also I think Trudie and Sherry should’ve been the only opening kills. They had the best chemistry and it would’ve made a bigger impact.

Kirby was my favorite character of the whole movie. To me Hayden Panettiere is a great actress and I loved her work in the 2016 game Until Dawn.

The good people of Radio Silence really honoured Wes with at least acknowledging Kirby's survival. Let's hope she returns NEXT YEAR!

The thing nobody EVER mentions about Gale's character is that she has virtually NO BACKSTORY. She showed up at Woodsboro out of nowhere and just latched on to Cotton/Maureen/Sidney's story. We're never told where she's from, she has no family, no friends and despite being a supposed famous "journalist" she doesn't have an affiliation with any TV networks or major newspapers. She shows up at the college in part 2, she shows up in Hollywood in part 3, she comes back to Woodsboro and part 4, why? She's not the target but she keeps inserting herself into a dangerous situation that has NOTHING to do with her. Any normal sane person would have run far away from that whole situation. AND she always manages to walk away with little to no injury or bodily harm. At least Dewey is from Woodsboro and his younger sister Tatum (Sid's best friend) was murdered in the first go around so he has a genuine emotional investment. Quite frankly unless they find a way to go into Gail's backstory and tie into these murders in some way I think her character's journey has run its course.
I mean since her and Dewey are a thing, it kinda makes sense for her to be there in the 4. I think in 1, 2 & 3 it also kind of makes sense since shes there for her whole journalist thing, like how in 1 shes there for her book, and also in 2 I think. Though I agree is it worth risking ur life lmao. If she returns in 5 I think she’ll mostly be there just for Dewey like emotional support or she’d just be there cos he’s in Woodsboro

If we had like anyone who wasn't in the core 3 live/escape, it would be very interesting lol. But that isn't unique to the Scream franchise. It seems like all horror movies love to kill everyone minus the core character(s).
I think they should kill Gail and the police dude and let Sidney and possibly Kirby the only survivors just to get Sidney in scream 6 a mental illness and she becomes the new killer for a few movie's where always someone innocent is supposed to be the Killer and first in scream 10 we find out since scream 6 Sidney was the killer

The Sherrie and Trudie opening is TOP tier. Their chemistry and line delivery had that og scream energy to it
Whole heartedly disagree about the opening. To me, they really nailed the “oh this is real now” feeling. The characters (and us the audience) are entertained by death and violence... until it happens to them. Then it’s terrifying. I love it so much.
Not that that scene is one of my favorites or anything, I appreciate how it's very unique. I've never seen something like that in another movie. And how you don't know which kill is real too.
Yeah, I always liked that scene. I laughed out loud in the theater the first time I saw it, because I wasn't expecting it, and that rarely happens in any movie. It's nice getting thrown a curveball every once in awhile.
I think Jill should have gotten away with it. That would have been interesting.
The Weinstein's choice to change that very ending is why it took us so long to get a 5th movie
Im torn. It would have been a better ending, but then we would lose, what I consider, the best line: "You forgot the one rule of remakes, Jill. Don't fuck with the original."
YES!!! I’ve always said that if the movie ended in the scene of Jill being wheeled out by paramedics, it would have been the best of the franchise. Scream 4 is already an underrated movie and my favorite after the original. But the ending was way too predictable and boring.

Randy Meeks will always be the best character in this series. I know most people love Gale or Dewey or Sidney. But Randy was relatable to horror geeks.It was the worst idea to kill him off. Randy will be remembered.
I agree with everything you have said. I actually feel that most of the characters in Scream 4 had weak character developments. I feel really bad for Mary McDonnell and Britt Robertson especially. Watching the alternate and deleted scenes, reading the early draft of the screenplay and hearing your commentary about the film and the characters made me realize that the movie missed a lot of opportunities to become bigger and better than its predecessors. I still love the movie though but not as much as I love your thoughts about it.

Her Death has been unconfirmed and was written off supposedly to have survived her wounds but due to the ending having been changed and I think Wes craven dying left her status currently unknown. But personally I say that she survived.

Kirby is definitely the best character in this! Probably in my top 10 favorite Scream characters. The scene where she just names off every horror movie she can think of and how panicked and emotional she gets is brilliant. Hayden definitely shows up and shows out as Kirby! Scream 5 should for SURE bring her back! (Wish we could bring back Randy, Billy, and Stu, but I know that ship has sailed!)

#1. Kirby Reed
As everybody, I just love Kirby. Clearly the biggest positive surprise of the Scream 4 cast. Her looks, her attitude, HP's brilliant performance, the fact that she's a more likable horror movie geek and has amazing final girl potential,... Everything is there to make her one of the fanbase's fav newcomers. I really wish Kirby would come back in a future installment, as she more than deserves it. Now, I don't wan't her to replace Sidney (or any legacy character), but I want her to accompany them, so that we'll keep a souvenir of Scream 4 while getting another great character to follow.

Kirby definitely could've been one to pass the torch to. Sid meets Randy in a perfect amalgamation. A strong Final Girl with character to build on and a funny, self-aware knowledge of the Horror meta.
I love this analysis run you've had on Scream, it's my generation's Halloween series and Scream 4 wrapped that up succinctly with the rules of the genre. 3 was ahead of its time for openly blowing the whistle on Hollywood's exploitation throughout the history of Horror cinema AND made by the fuckin' Weinsteins of all of people. This quadrilogy is so well-wrapped and logical compared to any other Slasher on the top 10 list.
I would only hope that you could cover the Scream MTV Series. I know, it's nowhere near the caliber of cinema as the films are, but damn it I sat through 3 seasons of that show to finally see Ghostface again and it wasn't half bad. I just had to suffer through 2 seasons of unrelated garbage. Sadly, it didn't offer any insight into the rules of the genre nor offer any characters worthy of segwaying into the 5th film.
I just find it interesting how many people are attracted to the same costume and weapon (iconography and fetishized weaponry). I even looked into Danny in Dead by Daylight. He's the Ghostface killer. Other licensed characters are themselves, like Michael, Leatherface, Freddy, etc. But Ghostie is specifically someone completely unrelated to Sid or the Westboro murders. I thought it was a strange choice but interesting overall.

IMO of the main characters Dewey's the worst. Realistically he'd have never gotten on to any police force. He's basically what would happen if Halloween 5's clown cops were treated as serious characters. Luck and plot armour are the only reason he's survived all 4 Ghostface killings.
I was always disappointed with how they wasted Mary McDonnell's character. She was a well respected actor in her day and had the range and ability to develop an interesting character. If they had expanded on her coldness a little bit more and had more of a dialog between her and Jill it could have had a better arc into why Jill was so fucked up and jealous of the attention Sidney got. Neve in this movie was really awesome though. I agree there could have been more of a back story to Sidney but she definitely was way more interesting in 4 than the other sequels. I also thought Neve Campbell really showed a lot of growth as an actress in 4 from when she was in her younger years. She has a theatrical quality that I really love. Gale, I thought, was a little underwhelming in this movie too. After she got stabbed her character kind of just fizzled away. The comedic moments between her and Dewey seemed a little forced and less spontaneous also. Maybe that was partly because the two actors were going through a separation...not sure. I would like to hear some news from Courtney Cox though about wether she's been approached. I haven't heard a peep from her about Scream 5 which is freaking me out! Adding Kirby as a legacy character for Scream 5 and setting up future instalments would be EPIC. She clearly has the fanbase and I doubt many would disagree with her being the strongest or at least one of the strongest in 4. She's very lovable and funny but also really talented as an actress. I hope she comes back!
In a way, I kind of don't want Courteney to come back. Love Gale, but Scream 5 might feel way too bloated once again if they try to force all of them into the movie. Kate Roberts definitely is portrayed a lot warmer in the deleted scenes. I would still liked to have seen Lauren Graham play the character. From the script I read, I could see her in the role.
@@ZackCherry I haven't read the other script but I do like the idea of expanding the role of Kate anyhow. I can see what you mean about bloating the script. I'd still like to see Gale though and have them cut down on all the disposable characters to build more depth into some of the better characters. It's hard for me to imagine Dewey without Gale.
Zack Cherry well she’s coming back so YES COURTENEY COX! Personally I love that they are bringing the original cast back. I would hate them to just use the ‘scream’ name and just cast a bunch of unknown faces.

Thank you! Sadly, it's hard to really differentiate a lot of the deaths as they are mostly basic stabbings. But perhaps a top 10 best deaths.
First off, love the way you talked about the parallels between Anthony Anderson in Scream 4 and Deon Richmond in Scream 3. Im hoping that in Scream 5 we'll get a more vast representation when it comes to the Black characters in the franchise. Scream 2 was dope. And I so agree with you about the opening to 4!

I think the best friends are more important than the main character in all Scream movies (except maybe Scream 2), they give them strenght and courage and we know them better. I dont think the boy was gay, he just said he was in order not to be killed basically.

Wow! Thanks for pointing out the alternate cut for Scream 4! Loved it! Scream 4 is my second favourite after the first movie, but having seen this cut I really wish they would have left a lot of the deleted scenes in the final cut. Some of them really add some good depth and detail, especially those in and around Kirby’s house towards the end.
It really is the best version of the movie I have seen.
I will never be able to watch Scream without seeing Matthew Lillard as Shaggy and I can never watch Scooby-Doo without seeing Shaggy as Stu Macher 😂😂
Yes, a key to character development is allowing for time. With fewer characters, more time is available to flesh out the ones that are meant to be remembered.
Hopefully Scream 5 will fix these flaws.
I really hope Kirby comes back next year, and Im not just saying that because Hayden was also the actress for Sam in Until Dawn, but Kirby was overall a great and likeable character.
That 'time for someone new to die' line, was in the trailer. For me, it felt like they tried to create the Idea of the possibility of the og3 getting killed off in Scream 4.
They should have just left that scene in, as well as most of them.

Sherrie and Trudy were my favorite part. I thought the new characters were just meta versions of the ones from the original trilogy. Also I can’t overlook the fact that Britt Robertson reminded us so much of SMG, even shared the same name as her character in the franchise. And nothing was said about that in the storyline. She could’ve been her kid sister, teen mom child even. And it would’ve made a great motive for the killers to target her for their « remake » opening kill. On both versions. Even though the alternative one where she is the main victim, is the one I prefer.
What r u talking about? She didn't share the same character name. The character SMG portrayed was named Cici, short for Casey and the name of the character Britt portrayed was Jenny.

James Pope which is the whole point. she was on another level of craziness, ready to kill sidney no matter what. she really brought an innovative motive next to the previous ones. she might not be your personal favorite ghostface but it won’t change the fact that she is technically one of the best.
James Pope I loved Timothy Olyphants character. It was predictable that he was the killer or at least one of the killers, but then there were certain scenes where you’re like no it can’t be him. Ends up being him. But I loved him in Scream 2

The original opening scene was so much better. Don't know why Weinstein felt it needed to be "punched up" as Wes said.

There is no better character in 4 than Kirby herself. A shame because she could carry a franchise herself as the main girl.

Mary McDonnell was so underused in Scream 4, but as the Oscar nominee that she is, she owned her two minutes. I would have liked to have seen more of Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell.
I loved the triple opening, I thought that was so funny. But the movie itself felt like it was gambling on young talent becoming breakout stars (like much of the cast from Scream) and it just didn't pay off. I still love the movie, but it could have been more solid if there was more balance between the new and the old. And besides it's just harder to portray teens now because social media moves so fast. You can't make kids seem cool on screen anymore, it's a wasted effort. Imagine if they made Sid's publicist more of a seasoned character and had someone like Heather Locklear play it? Or fleshed out Maureen's sister? I think it just gives more layers and it's not so much as stunt casting but actors who know you don't have to play it 100% straight, especially in this genre.
It would’ve been much better if Lauren Graham played Kate!! She actually looks like she could be a relative to Sidney, and Graham was an amazing actress !! I would’ve loved to see her in it and have a much bigger role. I LOVED her as Lorelei Gilmore !!

Wow I’m just now realizing that this channel exists! I’m absolutely in LOVE with the Scream franchise!!! I totally agree with Kirby being #1. If the Scream God’s would hear us and have Kirby back for Scream 5, then she HAS to be the next one to carry the Final Girl torch! Outside of Sid, there’s no one else that would have a real backstory or understand that kind of trauma and pain like Kirby and she has a plus, Kirby has the movie genre knowledge and understanding that Sid didn’t have so that’s why she’s the perfect next final girl!

100% agree with your ranking. I do hope they bring Kirby back. It would be nice to see another character come back for a sequel than just the big three. I can see Sidney being a mentor for Kirby
I would love to see Kirby back, but my fear is that it might just diminish Sidney's role in the movie, if they would both be in it. And then we would just have another Scream 4 where there is no fully developed character storyline.
Honestly i think it would have been a cool plot if Sid ended up in a coma at then end of 4 and Jill and Kirby survived. Then they could have gone into 5 with Jill still pretending to be innocent and Kirby not knowing. Maybe midway through the movie Sid wakes up and she tries to tell people, but no one believes her. I also think Jill wouldn't be Ghostface in this one and the subplot would be her trying to figure out who it was this time because she knew it wasn't her. Then her and Sid might reluctantly team up to figure it out. Then it turns out the be Kirby the whole time because it turns out that Kirby figured out Jills betrayal and wanted revenge. Just a suggestion that I know will never be reality.

Heres how I imagine the basic plot points of scream 5:
Kirby is alive but completely traumatised from the events of the last film and barely able to move on, kinda like Laurie/Annie in the Rob Zombie Halloween sequel.
Dewey and Gale are divorced and Gale has moved out of Woosboro possibly to NY or LA to focus on her career as a journalist.
We meet Sidney as she is permanently moving back to Woodsboro to be closer to Dewey as she is also going through a divorce and is now a single mother, maybe she's moving back into her dad's old house.
Once she returns, murders kick off, the main 3 plus Kirkby (and maybe Deputy Hicks) reunite to solve who's behind it.
Maybe Dewey gets killed off in this one for the shock value and we get to see Gale deal with the loss that she never expected as Dewey has always come out surviving his attacks in the past.
The movie ends with our final girls Gale, Kirby, Sids daughter and maybe Sidney coming out surviving together like the Strode girls in Halloween 2018, unless Sidney dies in the final moments as a 'sacrifices herself to save her loved ones' cliche.
Damn, sucks that this series is over already! Hope to see some more in the future tho... maybe a kill ranking list from each film next like Zac mentioned? 😋

Thank you for the extended cut link. I've only started watching but the opening was MUCH better the way we got in the extended cut. A bit more jarring. I feel if the rest of the movie is this way, the cuts really did this movie a disservice.
“More programmed than authentic,” awesome way to describe Charlie’s movie knowledge. You did a very good job explaining the characters in this movie. My main issue is that I really didn’t find any of these new characters interesting. Hopefully the new one has better characters

What I would like to see for Scream 5 is if there is a sidekick have that sidekick who you think is just the sidekick outsmart who is setup and revealed to be the main killer and actually switch places where the sidekick becomes the main killer and turns on who we thought was the main killer. If only it was easy to become a writer and submit a script. I have way more ideas but that's only one of them
I personally feel like it would’ve added to the film if Rebecca has a proper chase scene and they kind of made her death more like cici’s by having a 30 minute in death that’s really drawn out as they had no chase scenes in the movie
They really dropped the ball to with the chase scenes here. I think thats why they changed the opening (which was better how it was originally) but they needed that 10 second chase scene with Jenny. ugh.
I absolutely love the Scream movies and thought the 4th one was super good.

You’re 100% correct with everything you said about Scream 4! Even more so with Sherrie & Trudie! I thought the same exact thing the first time I saw Scream 4! Casting, casting, casting it seems like they’re always in a rush with picking who plays who.
Kirby is why scream 4 is my favorite second to the original. I love Hayden anyway, but her performance as Kirby is by far my favorite.

When I went to see SCREAM 4, I was SO FUCKIN PSYCHED cause of how Much of a HUGE FAN I am of the First 3, but just to be Upset with the Two Beginning Psych Out Kills!!!... The Anna Paquin, and Kristen Bell Kill Scene look like a Really Bad SUPERBOWL Commercial that was getting us Ready for the Up and Coming New SCREAM Film coming out for the Summer...

how is it that you said so much of what I thought about Scream 4? They needed someone else to play Charlie, to bring out some more personality to such an important character. Someone who could crank up the intensity when needed like in the final act.
I love how much of a pro Sidney was when going up against Ghostface. In her first encounter with Ghostface (Charlie), she knew right away to tuck and roll down the stairs, while bringing Ghostface down with her lol. The move of a seasoned veteran!
The way u say processes is odd. Hayden Panettiere is a very talented actress. I remember her from Remember the Titans and thinking that she was going to grow up to be a great actress and she did.
Hayden as Kirby is great i don’t really see in other movies but have seen her be played in until dawn!
If you haven't watched the TV show Heroes, it is an amazing show that will suck you in very quickly. It has a very diverse cast with Hayden as one of the "main" characters. I have "main" in quotations, as many characters are all part of an ensemble of leads. This show is what made me fall in love with her, and with everything I have seen her in since Heroes, she tends to be in the top 3 most likable characters overall in each fandom.
The most notable ones for me are Heroes, Until Dawn (Sam was my favorite character by far. She was the only one I really tried not to let die) and Scream 4. Her performance in all of these are outstanding to me and I think her acting has a big impact in why so many people like her characters so much. She takes these characters that could be "like the rest" and makes them her own, someone that stands out. Only someone with such amazing talent could find a way to constantly make your character, whether a main character or otherwise, a fan favorite over and over again. To do so in an ensemble cast like each of the three listed above is even more impressive, as you have many characters to choose from.
Hayden Panetierre is one of my favorite actresses of all time and I pray her name will appear in the Scream 5 casting list.
I can only wish Hayden Panettiere would return for Scream 5, I agree she was by far the best part of Scream 4 and her being in Scream 5 would be legendary

I think the alternate opening of Scream 4 was waaay better, even if it does not have the nostalgia of the other version with the garage door and all that, its funny and creepy seeing Marnie taking some seconds to realize her friend is actually dying in front of her and the whole scene is way more brutal than the ones you see before so it doesnt feel as cheap
Edit: and my favourite character in this one is Jill, i think the character per se wasnt that great but Emma Roberts did an awesome job
