Ray is actually pretty insanely fast once you master his flying technique.

Try going the chemical plant act 2 and play through it until you reach the area with the huge space(the one where if you head left you can reach a special stage ring) and glide with Ray,you gain a ludicrous amount of speed

Yeah, exactly. It's only problem imo is that unlike Knuckles, Ray -doesn't chuckle- is vulnerable when gliding.
Micah Buzan yeah Ray and even mighty to an extent feel way more like additions only for speedrunners and not for regular people cos they don't feel as natural to use as sonic tails and knuckles, but probably are better once you've spent time learning them. Mighty annoys me though, I keep accidently slamming into the ground cos I guess I'm used to double tapping the jump button for the last 25 years
Yeah that Hydrocity to Mirage Saloon transition still bugs me. Maybe they took in too much salt water in Hydrocity and Mirage Saloon is just a literal mirage?
Garrulous64 I think that a level transition wouldn't really work here, as they would have to make one to fit both your worst nightmare and the new Encore Mode stage.
iAmCatton Hydrocity could have been underneath Mirage Saloon. They coulda just got shot out of a manhole by a torrent of water. Think Chemical Plant to Studiopolis except with more of IGN's favorite liquid.

I think it’s pronounced Hydo-city Zone, because, well, think about it. The Zone is a city underwater, or a water city, hense Hydro-city. I honestly don’t understand why some people call it Hydrocity as one word.

I was late to the Sonic Mania party, having picked up Sonic Mania Plus about 3 days ago for the Switch, but holy crap. This game beat the shit out of me with nostalgia. It's literally my childhood encapsulated into one Sonic game. And for that, I LOVE it.
I just bought this game yesterday and I was in tears how it brought back memories! I had a pretty tough childhood but one of my pleasant memories is playing video games with the few friends I did have. Literally, videos games helped me read by the time I was 4! Videos games (especially sonic) I will always love!!!
Help I've dipped so much money on Mania with the collectors edition and physical edition and having the normal game on multiple platforms

For those who wanted to explore the stages (which are 3 times larger than any classic sonic stage) Yes, it was a Huge annoyance.
Now if they could have only made an option to avoid you getting randomly crushed to death.
Well for one getting extra lives in this game isnt very hard, and two, dying from a time out resets the clock anyway. So i still dont see it being a big issue

They'd have to make 3 different transitions from Hydrocity to Mirage Saloon. One for the plane level, one for Knuckles', and one for Encore Mode. Though I guess there could have been a fade to them jumping on the Tornado or even just flying on it before fading to the level proper.
I love how in the transition to titanic monarch, when lighting strikes tails gets scared which I think is a reference to the first sonic movie when he says he’s afraid of lightning
There needs to be a chaotix mode.
Being able to use the "game options" on save files is my favorite addition. I can't play through the whole thing in one shot, so if I want to beat the game with the insta-shield & Knuckles, I don't want to have to give up the emeralds when I start up again. They put in a sound test code for the emeralds anyway, so that's cool. The flying Super Sonic code is pretty sweet too.

@@GatorOne-in7hk every retro game reviewer had that avgn influence at one point. He became more mature since then. He still dropped the F bomb in Nitro Rad's April Fools 2019 video but it was so hilarious in context that I didn't mind it at all

i love the sonic ova it had great music and to me is one of the best representations of sonic outside of the games i really love that movie im surprised so many think so poorly of it
I've run through the original Mania game at least a few dozen times, and I think you're selling encore mode a bit short. It is true that the general framework of the levels are the same, but I was constantly noticing changes as I was playing the level. My playthroughs of Mania mode and Encode mode end up feeling quite a bit different (with encore I think being even more engaging/interactive). The big ring placement being almost entirely different certainly messes with your familiarity as well and encourages you to explore less-traveled portions of the stages on top of everything else.
And I don't think Ray/Mighty not having unique intros is weird at all lol. Knuckles gets one as a reference to the two different intros in Sonic & Knuckles, but he's a special case. Not even Tails gets a unique intro in this game despite being so prolific.

I just wanted to chime in and say that your little cartoonized version of yourself might be the only one I've seen on TH-cam that actually looks like you and doesn't try to slim 20-50 pounds off. I've been shocked in the past when I've seen some of my favorite TH-camrs for the first time (usually streaming on Twitch) after only seeing their little cartoon portraits.
My complaint with encore exactly.
The only different thing I noticed (other than on Green hill) is a few more blocks in chemical plant. It is clear that the main attraction of Encore is the tag mode.

Finally, someone said that - Hey this DLC isn't so amazing as everyone is saying. I feel like it's really okay, but I was expecting a bit more, even if the price is relatively low, I would much rather pay more to have just a few more changes and additions.
It was a really good follow up for Mania, and it was a nice touch taking inspiration from Knuckles Chaotix for Plus.

With the Hydrocity to Mirage Saloon transition, what I think would have been pretty neat is Sonic (or whoever your playing as) walks through the passage into a room and it has the Tornado. That would have been awesome. And for Encore then the tornado lands and then everyone jumps out and proceeds through the zone.

Fun fact: when the pinball stage is on you see eggman right that was used for the same animation for the Japan game sonic the hedgehog and that’s where mighty and ray debuted
11:08 There's already mods of Sonic Mania (and its Plus expansion); Of the few I've seen, there's one that makes Sonic's sprites look more like Sonic 3, one that replaces Sonic & Knuckles' respective hues to look less pink and turquoise, and also a few custom levels, too. On the Plus side, the only one I saw was of the Encore and Mania palettes being swapped, but I'm sure the mods that were for base Mania work with Plus.

Thee way how you felt was how i felt when i first played sonic mania, i played the hell out of sonic 1 to snk 3. so it felt i was playing a generations type game for the 2d error only. despite it was old stages i still liked the game

I feel a little different about the encore mode, while stages feel 80% the same even with the different layouts this means that there is different areas to explore, the two new characters mighty and ray also made the devs make the layouts based on them so some levels had entire new paths for mighty and had some open-ish design for ray to glide around which I appreciated. I like being able to enter knuckles routes with another character like tails or sonic. Most special rings were re-located meaning I had a reason to look around and find them, their new spots are a little bit trickier to find too which felt more rewarding when i found one, i gave me the same feeling as finding them in sonic 3 years ago. The zones may be unnecessary but i think of it as they basically add 20+ more levels, altered scenery, with different routes to take and rings to find, with character swapping which could make a different experience every playthrough, you may want to use a different combination to see whats in an alternate route. I personally love this mode inclusion as it adds a lot of replay options which im all for replay this amazing game again.
And now i have to time attack 40+ levels, with 5 different characters...oh boy...
