In each of these treatments the elements that Ridley stole are much more developed and make sense unlike the way Ridley used these ideas and just mashed them all together without any explanation leading to questions and confusion instead of a satisfying film. Also Jame's Aliens is a superior film to Prometheus and Covenant. You must be one of the "fans" that Ravens that fly with nightmare eyes was talking about. There were no planned sequels to Alien. My justification is the crew in prometheus or hell humanity in general hasn't dealt with anything remotely similar to what's on prometheus and if you're using the stupid crew card let me highlight in the first Alien movie a guy looked directly into a strange organic pod after it opened and stared at it long after he saw something slither inside most people would freak out and back off they also ignored Ripley and let him inside the ship despite the fact that at this point it had melted through the helmet and latched on the melting through glass should've been the warning sign and I'm not saying the act of letting him in was idiotic ( the android did it) the fact that they were wanting to let him in not saying alien is stupid just that prometheus should have some tiny amount of slack cut

@@elihenline6089 He knew AvP took ideas from the StarBeast script, which he had far more knowledge of as it was an extensive aspect in the development of the ALIEN script. I'm not surprised he found AvP a travesty that was best ignored. Any similarities stem from the fact that Anderson was pilfering certain plot elements from the 1977 treatment that happened to be fundamental to the Prometheus script, where such elements were more justified.

Alright I'm dropping this fanfic idea here in case someone steals it (if they haven't already).
Predators are the reason the Engineer ship didn't leave. Before departure, a small tribe of highly skilled Yautja covertly sabotaged the black goo housings which resulted in the infection of the crew. In the midst of the chaos the predators decided to have a little hunt and started picking some off (this is why some of the engineers in the pile appear as though holes have been blown through their heads rather than their chests) while they let the black goo do its work on others. They also disposed of the engineer borne trilobites which spawned. They then piled the bodies in one area as a message to others that may consider euthanizing the planet of their most favored quarry...
However they left the one remaining engineer inside it's cryostasis chamber if ever it's favored quarry became unfavorable... A reliable failsafe so to speak.
The enemy of your enemy may or may not be your friend...

I'd love to see comic and game threads pulled together. Dr. Kadinsky and the K-series from AVP extinction meets the red aliens from the Hive War comic.
An HBO series about a colony that Weyland-Yutani uses as a testing ground, releasing facehuggers to infect different species and observe how they react and what the combos produce (cow alien, donkey alien, maybe the colony has a 'zoo' that's intended for releasing animals into the wild in the future so maybe cougars, hyenas, lions, wolves, etc.). Maybe there's animals who've already escaped and are out in the world. If they bring in Predators, maybe their hunting hounds from Predators 2010 could be impregnated for something truly grotesque and gnarly looking.
The aliens develop two different hives, one natural and one given some kind of mutation by the scientists (how or where they got alien specimens can be explained as the series goes on) and they engage in a brood war over the remaining colonists and wildlife, giving the humans a chance to escape and survive while they wait for relief, all while Weyland scientists observe from terminals from some safe outpost.

As I watched this I grew more and more embarrassed for Ridley Scott. I had never noticed the similarities honestly but now I can't unsee them. And the scary thing is that as I watched this I began to realize that AVP largely handled the material BETTER in a lot of these cases.
The characters in AVP are mostly by the numbers, cookie cutter, but they don't act wildly inconsistent like they do in Prometheus. In Prometheus you've got mapping balls but Fifield and the scientist still get lost, they are terrified of an alien mummy that is clearly thousands of years old but later the scientist guy basically tries to make out with a clearly dangerous albino space-cobra.
As you point out one version of Weylan mostly just wants to be remembered, the other one wants ACTUAL IMMORTALITY which, now that I consider it, is probably the most childish dumb shit I've seen in a big budget sci-fi film (Scott seems to have a fetish for people demanding longer life spans from their creator for some reason as it happens in Blade Runner as well). He seriously puts himself secretly on board in cryosleep because he just ASSUMES the aliens can help him live forever.
AVP knows what it is, monster movie schlock, not high art, but Prometheus attempts and, I would argue, UTTERLY FAILS to touch upon heady serious themes about creation, faith, souls, etc. A lot of Prometheus never pays off or makes any sense, from the carvings that clearly show a Xenomorph queen to the idea that Engineers are genetically identical to us (which makes no sense on any level at all), to the importance of Vickers being Weylan's daughter, etc.
Both are clearly HEAVILY inspired by Chariots of the Gods and the idea of ancient astronauts but once again I think the Prometheus version is actually DUMBER. After all Shaw and Holloway just assume it's an invitation and also that the engineers engineered us and Holloway sulks like a child when he realizes he's not going to get to talk to the Engineers. Again somehow, as cheesy and stupid as AVP is Prometheus manages to be dumber and more childish while pretending to be way way smarter.
It's so sad but this video has actually made me APPRECIATE Alien Vs Predator and feel super embarrassed for Sir Ridley Scott.

Its an interesting theory. As a fan of the 2004 film AvP it does hurt to hear the creators never wanted such a crossover despite the large fan following it created. Until this review I never thought about the similarities these two films had and given Ridley's opinion on AvP as a whole and resent treads in Hollywood I'm not surprised. Hollywood as of late has been in a trend of reusing/rehashing old tropes and ideas. A lot of films end up feeling similar because of it. If Scott is being honest and never seen AvP then he's fallen into the same mire that many of Hollywood's directors have with over using certain tropes. If he's lying then it does paint the scenario in a different light though one I'm not sure I like. Alien Covenant was a terrible film in my opinion with how it told its story, and whether or not you agree is entirely up to you. I mention it though because it makes me wonder if Scott really knows what's best for the franchise, or if he's slipping into the same train that many feel Lucas an Spielberg have when they did Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. Regardless as a fan of the AvP setting I'll just have to disagree with Ridley. Still great video man always love and enjoy your deep dives into the mythos of both worlds.

I don't think Scott even knows what he's doing or where he wants his story to go, Covenant is so loosely linked to Prometheus that it almost feels like they're from entirely different creators... Dunno if he's already senile or something, but he definitely has to leave the franchise, without new blood to revitalize it this universe may find it's end... At least in regards to high quality content...

@@skepticalmagos_101 I think people who were familiar with the idea of AvP didn't care for it being modern day as opposed to the Ripley era as that cut out the Colonial Marines, like trying for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without bothering with the bread.
The design of the Predators was also lacking, as opposed to the imposing P1 or the agile P2 of their respective films AvP's design was like the Yautja equivalent of meathead dudebros (maybe they just ate too much steroid beef).
Something about the execution of the team-up at the end also seemed ham-fisted, it wasn't new to the IP what with Machiko but the film had less of that and more an Anchorman "I hate you but goddam I respect you" hamminess.
Also there was the familiar issue where properties that earned their respect on mature ratings get toned down for a wider audience that rarely (if ever?) results in a satisfying follow up. To its credit, Requiem for its flaws did a better job in that regard than AvP.

I always liked to believe that everything is connected. I can explain it with a bit of stretching.
Charles Bishop Weyland (Lance Henriksen in AvP) created his company Weyland Industries and the events in that movie took place. When he passed, his holdings in the company were either given to his wife or next of kin (a son) in 2004.
It’s said on the Weyland Corporation website that Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce in Prometheus) was born on October 1, 1990. When he came of age, he could have taken his shares in the either defunct or waning Weyland Industries to restructure or create the new Weyland Corporation in 2012.
There’s nothing that directly states Peter is not the son of Charles, other than the accent and birthplace. Which can be easily explained as Charles married an English woman and they were in India when he was born.
This would still keep the logic that the Bishop android was designed to look like his creator (Michael Bishop / Michael Weyland, “Bishop II” in the Alien 3 credits), if we’re still believing he’s human. ...I can’t keep that one straight anymore.

Wonderful video! I recently read JW Rinzler's book on Alien which discusses many of the original ideas that were discarded and didn't make it into the original movie due to constraints of time or budget, or simply because they were considered too daft or complex. Not surprisingly most have been gleefully recycled by the subsequent movies in the franchise. Prometheus includes ideas that Ridley Scott discussed with Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett back in the 1970s so it is easy to see how AVP also dredged up such similar nuggets from the writing kitty litter.

First i was: "Noou way, man."

Now the man who started this all, in one way or the other, travels the same kind of journey, way back and way in the future. And as in the Alien: Resurrection, Covenant rebirths aliens again through horrific experiments, death and huge suffering to the main character of previous movie. To create unnatural life just because they can do it. Like the Engineers! "Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" In the Resurrection, artificial programming almost caused a genocide. In Covenant, it did just that. Yey, connections all around!

Honestly, Prometheus is an adaptation of Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness." Spoilers follow, but if you've seen one or read the other, they're largely the same story: A group of scientists of different fields travel to then-unexplored (circa 1930something) frozen wasteland of Antarctica. They find aliens frozen in the ice, which when revived kill some of their crew. The humans discover an ancient city that predates humanity. They uncover information within the city showing that these aliens likely were responsible for the creation of humanity and indeed all life on Earth. Oh, and then there's also a rogue shape-shifting alien killing machine that this species created that is now after the remaining scientist/explorers. Parallels? You could say that.

My first thought after watching Prometheus (10 years ago!) was how similar it was to AvP, which I thought was quite funny, whether it was intentional or not, so I'm glad someone else has seen that. The main connection is the Von Daniken nonsense about alien intervention in human evolution - Pyramids in AvP, DNA in Prometheus. You also had it in The Crystal Skull. An early rendition of the Alien eggs was in a giant pyramid, and the 'skull' dome in Prometheus is from Giger's Dune concept, so you have all that going on too. You could argue - lack of ideas = mining similar territory.

Glad this is getting discussed here, because the crew meet and greet scene in AvP was awfully similar to the Prometheus scene.

Agreed. I think they both stole/homaged the mood of that scene from Aliens. But then Prometheus so heavily echoed AvP,.it takes it way beyond an accidental reference.

This is fucking WILD! Great job on the comparisons. My gut says it's just coincidence but who the hell knows. Weirder things have happened.

Not sure which one is more daft, AvP or Prometheus. But it doesn't really matter.

I always knew that these films were similar but when compared like this the truth is crazy to believe. Prometheus is a blatant copy. It's still enjoyable nonetheless.

Basically you pointed out how much of a quack Ridley Scott has become over the years without his supporting writing team to balance the plot, cinematography, and tone of the films....💯

I for one loved AvP. The first one only, the rest sucked. I´d choose that over Prometheus anytime!

“So we go to Prometheus, which was not bad actually”... Weird take, as Prometheus felt less “Alien” than even AVP did.

Okay, this video did the impossible TWICE: it made me somehow like each film even more. You're a mad genius, sir; a mad genius, I say!
