I like the first AvP. It’s fun but I don’t consider it mainline cannon. Now what I want is something (probably animated) based on capcom’s AvP game set in Neo-Shanghai or whatever it was
Just wanted to say that I discovered your TH-cam channel earlier this year and I can't get over how much I enjoy it, and that I somehow missed out on it for so long. You are doing a fantastic job of keeping healthy discussion of this franchise ongoing, and the fans are lucky to have you.
Your content profoundly changed my view of Sci-Fi movies! I love your videos, thanks for the many years of work which influenced me to become a full blown Alien SuperFan.
I rewatch it every now and then. I love seeing the creatures and that is a lot of practical effects. The studio has a bunch of videos from the set, it's damn impressive work and they really gave it their best. Thanks for the video!
I liked the first movie but i absolutely adored the video games. Too bad they stop making them just when we were about to see the Xenomorph Homeworld. Imagine fighting the Queen Mother...
Yeah then Prometeus and Covenat went and wrecked the idea of an Alien homeworld. ... Although props to anyone daft enough to land there knowing what they were going.
I saw it opening night with my father in Orlando. School was out because Hurricane Charlie was scheduled to hit Central Florida the next day. It was very exciting because, like Alien Theory, this was the first Alien (or Predator) film I was old enough to see in theaters. I remember enjoying it, but it felt noticeably less serious and interesting than literally every other installment of either series. I’ve gone back and forth on it with time, but I find it an enjoyable watch, especially as a background movie. Effects work and visuals are quite strong, and I agree with the video’s points on the performances. Weaknesses are the screenplay, the whole concept at the center of the story, the PG-13 rated content, and the video-game pacing. It’s a great watch too for people interested in Alien but not crazy about scary movies.
I gotta say , your video on the full screen vs wide screen version of this film is so good ! My bf and I watched it … and then later that week watch avp on full screen bc it’s all we had access to . Wow , your video was so enlightening , informative and entertaining
AvP was the best movie with the titular Alien in it since Aliens. I very much enjoy it on rewatch and definitely hold out hope that someday, a serious banger of an AvP will be delivered.
One of the things I realy appreciate about your videos is just how cool and fair you are about these movies. You're absolutely right in that nothing that could be made will ever live up to fan expectations, but that AVP did a darn fine job in doing what it did. I had no idea it had so many practical effects and it was really cool to learn about that! It does make a huge difference to see and feel and touch the things on a set as opposed to CGI. I thought you were also very fair to the lead actress Sanaa Lathan, in pointing out she did the best with the script she had. An actor can be incredible, but if a script is bad or mediocre, it's a lot to ask them to elevate it. Look at the scripts for the first season of Star Trek TNG. Overall, I've always loved this movie and had a great time watching it in theaters.
AVP 2 was an amazing game. My friends and I were excited about this movie. We saw it the summer that we graduated from high school. I can't believe how much the world has changed.
This was really good. I realize that there wouldn't be enough differences to talk individually, but would you consider doing a combination: alien resurrection, AvP, and AvPR theatrical cut vs. extended cut, video?
I love AVP, it's a great movie to me, very nostalgic, and the AVP brand in general is very underutilized! Also, we are WAY overdue for AVP3 and more comics and games!!! These should not be separate entities, where is all the AVP stuff???
Hard disagree, Big Chap will always be the best to me. The weird cockroach head, fleshy texture, and lack of Geigery biomechanical detailing that the AvP and Resurrection aliens had really annoyed me. And they had less lanky, more beefy movie monster proportions too. At least the AvP version wasn't brown and didn't have dinosaur legs like the Resurrection ones did.
@@73rmin8r I agree with you on the design. The Aliens are very serpentine in AVP. But in the sense of raw screen time and action these things hold up a lot better than big chap does. Full kinetic action with full view of the Xenos. Alien and Aliens just don't have the same quality and you really only see flashes of the creature. Also I don't even consider resurrection a movie, it doesn't actually exist.
I completely agree with your take on Aliens Vs predator opinion. I have not seen Romulus but heard that it’s not as good as the other films but keeping an open mind as I am a massive Aliens film boon like yourself. I always enjoy watching your videos truly. Keep up the good work
Ive been silently watching you for a while. I feel the need to come and praise this movie. Now as an avid alien fan I can say its store and world doesn't exactly fit in the whole alien franchise but man I was 8 when I watched this film with my mom and it terrified me but also watching Sanaa Lathan fight along side the predator, and kinda giving an explanation to the pyramids to me as a child it really scratched an itch and I will always love it for that. It played well on the Alien 2 (Aliens) hive like nature and I loved that as well.
Good evening Alien Theory, have you ever thought of doing movie reviews as well on a new channel? I bet it would do great! You have a great voice and I love the way you speak. Keep up the good work!
I saw it once im waiting for digital release so I can watch it every day it means a lot to me cuz my name is Andy and the girl I love Sophia she’s white im dark skinned and her father died too so I feel like Andy from the movie I feel like her father found me and program me to do what’s best for RAIN (Sophia) :)
Haven't felt the need to watch it again.. What it does well it does amazing but it's faults makes it less rewatchable than alien resurrection or even AvP2
I was around 9 years old in 2004. I had watched Alien, Aliens and I had seen both Predator films numerous times(yes I was way too young lol) October of 2004 I saw them doing a celebration on FX for the release of the AVP DVD. They were marathoning the Alien and Predator movies. I saw it a week later and liked it and still enjoy it to this day.
I remember watching the AvP movie in Iraq at the Camp Speicher MWR! 200 US Army Soldiers started, and 12 of us remained. The last 20 minutes of the movie my team leader, SPC 4 mafia, made me run around the theater acting like a Xenomorph, I was a brand new PV2, having my battle buddy Stubblefield hunt me as a preadator. The remaining people in the theater said we were more entertaining than the AvP movie.
Avp is underated and overhated, it gets compared way to frequently to alien and predator but its not really trying to be either, its own franchise and should be judged on its own, and on its own its a fun action adventure movie with great kills and fight scenes, this movie rocks and i am happy people are rediscovering it
I remember playing the games you mentioned at exactly the same time. I also remember how much I despaired sometimes because the level of difficulty was so high - and not just for me as a kid. :D
I remember being so pissed that one Xeno killed two Preds in that first fight. And even Scar didnt exactly wreck any Xenos without his plasma caster. If they do it again I hope they adapt the 1990 original comic
To be fair it kinda contextualizes things. Predators are deadly hunters, but they aren't unkillable gods. Even in the original movie, it's eventually killed by a mere man using primitive technology. The xenos are meant to be the ultimate prey. And the Predators in the movie are novices undergoing a test, not elite warriors. If the xenos got clapped left and right it would have detracted from their status as "perfect organisms"
To me it felt more like the two games he mentioned. If you were a really good Alien player you could get the jump on cocky self-assured Predators with a quick tail strike or second jaw to the brain. Humans also had a funny tendency to never look up.
I still say a superman vs alien is best. He gets face hugged but because it's super man he 💩 out the xeno in a toilet and flushes mistakenly. Then the alien becomes super alien and fights superman after it grows in the sewers
For how much this movie and its sequel get thrown under the bus, I hold these movies close to my heart, without these films, I probably wouldn’t have got into their franchises as much as I did, I was scrolling through cable one when I was 7 and stopped on FX channel doing a double feature, and the scene I first saw was when the predators killed the crew on the surface, been hooked ever since, seeing those films, I remember being excited to to watch predators when it was available to rent through Redbox because of AVP, which I was 9 at the time
I kinda want to see the predators appear on screen in the current canon now, particularly since they've sorta done that with the Fire & Stone comics. Some "What if?" stories wouldn't be bad with a compelling plot though.
i always thought that it should be Alien vs Predator vs the Thing with a team of marines caught in the middle. as the Xenomophes seem to be a almost perfect counter to the Thing and that the Predators came across them like humanity did.
Great to see that audiences are finally appreciating this movie now. Back in 2004, I had already heard so many bad stories that I was actually not disappointed at all. In fact, I was almost bullied off the IMDb forums for liking it; some people really HATED it as an affront to their love for the series. Then a reporter nearly got a heart attack when he heard James Cameron give praise to it, and now we are even collectively celebrating its 20th anniversary. Goes to show that the haters are quite often only a small but very noisy fraction of the group who silence the rest to shame. Hope to see a part 3 one day, although I'm fine if they keep it a spin-off outside of the Alien universe. It feels more at home within the more popcorn-oriented Predator-verse in my opinion.
Imo AvP definitely had potential if Fox just didn’t pressure the production in order to ride on the hype Freddy vs Jason created. Hopefully one day we get another AvP film that adapts the Dark Horse comics, but the chances are kinda slim af knowing Fox.
It’s no longer Fox. Fox is gone. It’s now 20th Century Studios, and it’s a branch studio owned by Disney after Fox sold off all of its film an tv productions, while retaining its News and Sports rights. So Disney owns rights to Predator and Alien.
This very movie its the reason Im in love with Alien and Predator. All these years ago when I was like 6, I watched it in VHS and OMG, that movie rocked my entire world. I just can't put any hate towards this movie, for me its perfect ❤️
AvP2 game is what did it for me, Playing the opening for the marine campaign you feel the horror seep into your body... And then you switch to either of the other two campaigns and you really FEEL like now, you're the monster.
Thank you again. I've also warmed up to AVP throughout the years, and for the same reasons. And ...Instead of a Ripley-type, I've always thought that Sanaa Lathan's Lex Woods was more of a Machiko-type.
When you were discussing the end-cost of blockbusters from the same time, I noticed you did something everyone else does when discussing movie costs. Sort of like, "... oh, it only cost $60 million ...". You do realize don't you that one human being could live the rest of their life in debauched comfort on "only 60 million dollars". Personally, I think I could manage the short time I have left on this planet on only $5 million and have one whale of a time. Love the show. Cheers mate :)
As a kid I enjoyed and still really enjoy AVP. And honestly it should be canon, but That’s another convo hahaha. The ancient aliens Predator background, the return of bishop. Man it’s fun!
I still have the "Art of" book for the film, which is packed with a lot of photos and concept art for the film, plus the commentary from Woodruff and Gillis.
To be fair, the one thing that really hurt Alien vs Predator was the fact that it wasn’t a Hard R or Rated 18 in my country of England in Theatres upon release because this Film had good bones but I imagine the bean counters of the megacorporate studio executives demanded it be made more family friendly etc to try & make more money. I was a huge fan of the Dark Horse Comics as a kid in the 90’s and I would love to see another attempt at an AVP film
Glad your feelings changed on AvP over the years. I've always enjoyed the movie since seeing a double bill of Paul WS Andersons AvP and Resident evil Apocalypse on launch night. I'm a big fan of the director but it seems to be the "in thing" to laugh at him despite his many successes and profitability for the studios that hire him. AvP does a great job in not contradicting any alien or predator movie lore at the time as well as being fine for general audiences to follow. Everyone says it's a guilty pleasure movie embarrassed to say they like it but I'm not sure how many viewings it takes to admit that it's a good entertaining movie without any caveats. Good video.
I remember being psyched for the film. I grew up a huge fan of the books, comic, films and games. I still remember the feeling of my stomach dropping when i confirmed that AvP was going to be pg13.. still, it's entertaining enough.
Fun fact for anyone feeling old: More time has passed from AVP to Alien Romulus (20 years), than had passed from Alien to Alien Resurrection (18 years).

I watched AVP in cinema when it came out and I enjoyed it. Watched it a few times over the years on DVD and still like it to this day.
I still love this movie. It's what got me into all this and i will always say it's a underrated movie.
1:33 dude yes - 2000 AVP, the first time I got a face hugger in the marines campaign I literally jumped back in my chair!
The Elder Predator & co. was the best part
Until him come calling
Dread, man.
@@Agesilaus.88truly dread.
Den, he come'a fuck fightin'.
20 years? Who feels old yet?
Hell i,m Level 42/i wouldn,t classify myself as old
Getting to legend status.
I'm thirty three. I saw this movie in theaters back when it was released. So, yes. I am feeling old.
AVP 2 was an amazing game. My friends and I were excited about this movie. We saw it the summer that we graduated from high school. I can't believe how much the world has changed.
As always ...a great listen. Thanks you
This was really good.
I realize that there wouldn't be enough differences to talk individually, but would you consider doing a combination: alien resurrection, AvP, and AvPR theatrical cut vs. extended cut, video?
I got AVP on DVD and a chestburster plushie for christmas after the film came out, and I could not have been happier
Making me feel old again.
AvP is the “guilty pleasure” of the franchise. The fight scene between the Predator and the Alien is worth the watch alone.
Ay up Del-boy, just been watching ‘Expanded’ - what a doc and really enjoyed your input 🫡🙌
I love AVP, it's a great movie to me, very nostalgic, and the AVP brand in general is very underutilized! Also, we are WAY overdue for AVP3 and more comics and games!!! These should not be separate entities, where is all the AVP stuff???
Honestly this is the best the Aliens have ever looked and moved.
Watching it now the most entertaining thing is how many of its story beats (and practically full scenes) that Prometheus straight up lifted.
I completely agree with your take on Aliens Vs predator opinion. I have not seen Romulus but heard that it’s not as good as the other films but keeping an open mind as I am a massive Aliens film boon like yourself. I always enjoy watching your videos truly. Keep up the good work
Another great vid, thanks :)
Who all has seen Alien Romulus more than one time in theaters? I can't get enough.. so amazing
Andy is my favorite synthetic :)
Seen it twice
Watched it two times. Second time was in IMAX and I bought the Alien Romulus collection in a video game that lets you play as Rain.
Haven't felt the need to watch it again.. What it does well it does amazing but it's faults makes it less rewatchable than alien resurrection or even AvP2
That pounce move though...
A true guilty pleasure!
Love the content Alien Theory 🤘
I legit watched this last night, great video Mr. Theory
Avp is underated and overhated, it gets compared way to frequently to alien and predator but its not really trying to be either, its own franchise and should be judged on its own, and on its own its a fun action adventure movie with great kills and fight scenes, this movie rocks and i am happy people are rediscovering it
Still had a slower chest bursting period than romulus
I remember playing the games you mentioned at exactly the same time. I also remember how much I despaired sometimes because the level of difficulty was so high - and not just for me as a kid. :D
Hard to believe it's been 20 years. I remember going to see this the weekend before my freshman year in high school
This will always be in my heart, my bro and I went to see it in theaters.. RIP Mitch, AvP2 PvP ftw!
This is one of those movies i can always just watch and have a good time but also not have to pay attention
Exactly. Perfect movie for a switch-your-brain off night with popcorn.
@@randomcenturion7264I hate that term so much
You can’t switch your brain off, you either like something or you don’t…this term is a cop out
I remember being so pissed that one Xeno killed two Preds in that first fight.
I actually think this was a good call, make them more of a dynamic enemy fight instead of cannon fodder for the predator like in the comics and requiem
I still say a superman vs alien is best. He gets face hugged but because it's super man he 💩 out the xeno in a toilet and flushes mistakenly. Then the alien becomes super alien and fights superman after it grows in the sewers
@@hotwasabi69 how do we know they are novices? I always hear this from fans but what is the source of this statement?
I always loved the shot where the Facehuggers jump in SloMo towards the archeologists. It’s so well executed and looks dope af
And yet nobody ever thinks to raise their hands and shield their face. Only Ripley.
From Robocop 3 to this film, taking an ultra violent franchise and making it PG-13 is a death certificate for a film.
Ya but, the chestburst scenes weren’t worth going for the R rating IMO, and what made the cut was sufficient.
The best possible AVP would have been "The Trials of Machiko Noguchi" I so enjoyed your review of that graphic a few years ago. Thanks AT!😊
Babe, wake up new alien theory just dropped
Real
For how much this movie and its sequel get thrown under the bus, I hold these movies close to my heart, without these films, I probably wouldn’t have got into their franchises as much as I did, I was scrolling through cable one when I was 7 and stopped on FX channel doing a double feature, and the scene I first saw was when the predators killed the crew on the surface, been hooked ever since, seeing those films, I remember being excited to to watch predators when it was available to rent through Redbox because of AVP, which I was 9 at the time
Still prefer Requiem for Wolf, the Predalien and the gore even though it's hard to see
I enjoy AVPR when I see it as just a B-movie that's fun. It's not high art but it's entertaining enough, only thing is that the lighting sucks
The weird thing is that the trailer ain't that dark so wtf
I remember hearing they had to put a filter over it to hide some of the gore so it got a lower rating
It's about damn time they remove that filter. Imagine a 4k release with updated visuals.
@@brillbull8415 if that's true about the filter, God that's just so dumb
Ironically, I was just rewatching alien versus predator just literally last week and here now about to make it 20th anniversary that’s crazy
Excellent video 👍 Thank you 💜
I kinda want to see the predators appear on screen in the current canon now, particularly since they've sorta done that with the Fire & Stone comics.
@@Dark-StrangerAnd they won’t be done milking Star Wars for the next 3 decades.
I would absolutely love an 3rd movie
Thank you again. I've also warmed up to AVP throughout the years, and for the same reasons. And ...Instead of a Ripley-type, I've always thought that Sanaa Lathan's Lex Woods was more of a Machiko-type.
I always enjoy AVP, and an Alvarez/Trachtenberg AVP collaboration would be incredible!
I wanna see acontinuation of Avp3 1st of all before we even get round to an AvP remake
With a stronger director this could have been a great film.
I wish another AVP Alien Vs Predator movie that is a sequel to Alien Vs Predator Requiem movie and Continue Alien Vs Predator comics.
Love your videos Alien Theory.
I always loved this film, I never even knew people hated it for years, until I saw it was hated online 7 or 8 years after it came out .
Exactly the same.
@@greenbow7888 surprising wasn’t it
Hand raised for someone who found it super-meh on day 1.
Prey and Alien Romulus are great. Hopefully they can make a good Alien vs Predator movie.
Agreed, enjoyed them both a lot
They are the definition of "meh"
Haven't seen Romulus but Prey is awesome!
Romulus is far from great. Severely disappointing
Prey was great.
Romulus.....mid
Your motion comics are some of the best I've ever seen. Do you have any plans to make any more? I do hope so.
Fun fact for anyone feeling old:
More time has passed from AVP to Alien Romulus (20 years), than had passed from Alien to Alien Resurrection (18 years).
The slo-mo here works better for me here than anywhere else outside of The Matrix
